I should have followed my gut when we first stepped into the restaurant. When my husband asked if we would be able to have lunch the response from the waiter/barman was “have you got a reservation”. When he responded with a no, the waiter signed pointed to seats and said “sit over there” then walked away muttering under his breath what sounded like “f* sakes”. Despite this unfriendly welcome we thought we’d at least give the menu a look. The sandwich choices sounded nice, and so we decided to stay. I ordered a croque monsieur. What came, was NOT croque monsieur!! It was essentially a cheese and ham toasty, with the flimsiest bread, what looked like supermarket value quality square slices of ham, and the cheese ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE SANDWICH!! What’s more the cheese was that awful orange coloured cheap catering cheddar. No bechemel sauce to be seen. It was also to come with skin-on fries, but what we got were a cheap alternative with no “skin-on” at all! Honestly, I’ve never been so disappointed with meal ever before! When we were then ready to leave (and pay! I still can’t fathom why I actually ate some of it, didn’t complain and paid for it) a member of staff went to go and find the waiter. He came back and say “yeah, what?”. Shockingly bad service, and even more shockingly bad food! What is really a shame is that my husband and I were taking about when we might get a chance to have a night away, and that maybe we could come stay there. It’s fair to say that this will not be happening!

We were there for a 90th birthday party for 6 adults and one child. The service was terrible 3 of us had the fish and chips the fish was burnt and cold the chips were a mess there was no cutlery on table for desserts. We ordered a bottle of white wine which was plonked on table unopened and then asked how many glasses did we want. Upon ordering a second bottle we asked for ice bucket to chill wine but instead were given a pint glass full of ice cubes. Overall probably the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant.

Disappointed! Only 2 vegetarian choices (both also vegan) and only was available . My husband had a steak which he said was tasteless. The chips looked nice but weren’t cooked. We didn’t have desert! The restaurant was cold & tables to close together so you felt like you had to whisper across the table & made me feel uncomfortable. It wasn’t busy when we dined but despite there being plenty of available tables we were told we had to sit between two of other sets of diners so avoid if you’re looking for a romantic meal. Bar area for pre diner drinks was comfortable with relaxing chairs & sofas. The hotel is a lovely old building steeped in history & the waiting staff were pleasant so it was such shame to have mediocre food.

Not a good place for a special or romatic dinner. Food is poor but the restaurant itself is rather nice. All high ceilings good cutlery and quality tablecloths. Staff can't wait to get you out and the food is aimed at the mass voucher deal market. Overcooked chewy calamari. Fish and chips is okay but oven chips don't do it for me and the desserts are tiny and not very good. They don't even do potatoes with anything as they only do oven chips which is a bit odd. We did get told that if you mentioned you wanted potatoes an hour or two before dinner they could do them but who does that?. On the plus side their afternoon tea is superb but if you are going out for dinner go somewhere else

Was not a fan of both our lunch experience that came with our spa day and the breakfast that came with our overnight stay. To be served our food 20mins apart at lunch meant both my partner and myself eating separately, to be given diet coke can when you asked for full fat and told no you ordered diet and charged £2.75 for the pleasure of their mistake ! (P.s don't ever drink diet as I feel it tastes flat) To be brought out chips after my partner had finished lunch that you didn't order and told they will take it off your bill well I would think so considering we didn't order them nor eat them !! When you ask to speak to the restaurant manager and he couldn't care less, ok ok ok bye is what I got from him! Can see why the staff service is poor if this is who they were trained by! It wasn't busy I may add, 4/5 tables if you were lucky with 3 of them having afternoon tea ... Breakfast wasn't any better, waited over 10mins to be greeted and seated (again wasn't busy) and staff saw us and completely ignored us and was wiping a table over and over. Ordered potato scone from the warm items to be given one ? Ok il just starve then thanks for that ( I'm also pregnant which is clear so how one potato scone can be classes as a substantial breakfast ) Breakfast choice poor, I know we are in Covid but a fresh fruit salad consisted of one little tiny bowl of two mouthfuls of tiny pieces of fruit soaked in juice. No choice of yoghurt just fruit or plain but can't choose your own fruit flavour ?It's a shame that this side of the hotel really let's it down because the spa etc are fab and I actually feel the spa staff should train the restaurant staff and show them what real customer service actually is !

we booked a dinner, bed and breakfast deal which included dinner on both nights. They were very accommodating on the second night and allowed us to eat in the bar, so we could go out earlier to the show we had booked. The meal in the restaurant was lovely (one small error - my husband and I received different menus - turned out mine was the wrong one, which was disappointing!) The food when it came was delicious. well presented and charmingly served. The portion sizes were just about right. The dessert was delicious (rhubarb 3 ways). The meal in the bar was equally delicious, and promptly served. We did not have time for starters and desserts, but the main course was more than adequate. Would recommend this place - especially booking the meal deal.

Came here for after my graduation and ate from the graduation menu. Had phoned beforehand due to having a gluten allergy, and coming with guests who were vegetarian. None of this was a problem and I was told what I could eat and felt like their was plenty of choice. When we came the table was beautifully decorated, with a wee 'congratulations' card and box of chocolates (lovely touch, thank you!) The food was excellent, everyone on the table was really happy. Tasty and good sized portions. Good gluten free options, and waitress made it seem like it was no trouble at all to amend dishes to make them suitable. Didn't feel like a hassle which can sometimes happen. They also had a range of gluten free desserts which is better than just ice cream! We had a lovely lunch here, ended up staying around 3 hours because it had a great atmosphere, and just felt comfortable. The staff were attentive and friendly, and obviously took note that it was a special occasion. The menu was £25/each for 3 courses which is very reasonable, especially with such nice food and good portion sizes. Would highly recommend, thank you!

My husband and I stopped here for a late lunch on Saturday, 31st July. The food was excellent the service was dire. The restaurant was virtually empty but still we waited 15 minutes to have our order taken. Eventually my husband went to the bar to say that we were waiting to give our order. He found the bar staff leaning on the bar chatting as they had been doing for most of the time. We could hear them. We should have left then. Another 5 minutes passed and a rather dour young lady took our order.Another 40 minutes passed before my husband went looking for an explanation for the delay. This time he encountered a pleasant young lady whose manner of attire gave the impression that she has some sort of authority in the hotel. Having had the situation explained to her she went off to investigate. She herself brought us our order a few minutes later. The food was piping hot and delicious. I can recommend the food, just not the service. As the young lady brought us our food, she must have noticed the table next to ours. It was littered with dirty dishes, empty glasses and the remains of a partially eaten meal for several people. What she might have known was that the table was in that state when we arrived an hour before. The serving staff had seen it. They could not have missed it, but obviously chatting to each other behind the bar was a greater priority for them. The young lady who delivered our food must have mentioned this t the waiting staff for a few moments later the original dour waitress arrived to clear it.We only had one course. It had taken so long to arrive we did not know how long dessert and coffee might take. It's a shame. We would have liked to try the desserts. Would they have been as nice as the main courses. We will never know.It is a lovely restaurant. The food is excellent. If the service had not been so appalling I could have recommended it. Let's hope the management solve the staff problem. It could be so lovely. I would love to try it again, but...I would need to hear good things about it first.

We ate dinner here on the first night of a two night stay at the hotel. The restaurant staff were charming & courteous and service was efficient. We skipped starters and went straight to the main course, the slow cooked beef was moist & flavourful, as was the breast of chicken served on a chorizo & vegetable stew and the shared side of double cooked chips were crispy & delicious. The raspberry cranachan dessert was served in a martini style glass, which required a tea spoon rather than the larger spoon which was set - a minor detail and an appropriate spoon was quickly supplied. The breakfast service was good too, with the buffet items being speedily replenished, beverage service timely and we appreciated being asked before plates were removed.Housekeeping wasn't quite as efficient though, there being a stray chip decorating the table pedestal, presumably left there from the night before!Almost, but not quite excellent.

We were booked for dinner bed and breakfast for this hotel and didn't have high expectations. We got a lovely surprise though as the menu was very good and the food was excellent. I bit high on the supplements though I think, I had to pay extra for lamb which was a surprise. A bottle of house wine was included in the deal we had but we asked to upgrade it and pay the extra which we were told was not a problem. We were not rushed at all and the staff were very friendly and efficient. We went through to the lounge bar for coffee. We asked for the bill two times and it never appeared so I had to go to the bar and ask if they would give us a bill. It was wrong three times. They charged us for two bottles of wine, the house wine and our upgraded wine. Wine I pointed this out he then amended it but again it was wrong, he didn't take off the cost of the house wine, eventually we got there. Apart from that I would say that the meal and the service were excellent.

She went to the chef who suggested some very creative dishes there were not on the menu as well as doing some changes to the dish I wanted that was on the menu. My vegetarian husband was given delicious goat cheese stuffed portobello mushrooms in a unique sauce as well as roasted potatoes and greens. My salmon was baked rather than grilled. We ordered from a very fine wine menu as well as a whiskey at the end of our meal from a great selection in the bar. Portions were large! My only complaint came with the pasta on my dinner which had a steely taste, was dry, and detracted from the rest of the meal. I'm sure if I'd asked for a replacement or change, my request would have been granted, but I am always trying to cut my pasta/bread from my diet so I let it be. One other issue that I'm sure could easily be remedied--the girls who waited on us all had long stringy hair they'd half put up, but strands hung in their faces and appeared greasy. In the dim lighting it would've been hard to see a hair in our food, but I did wonder if I'd find one! Appearances count with wait staff and I hope that Scholars will address that.

Food was ok but not that great. The steak looked very weird with this pale colour which you don't normally see with beef. Besides, i asked to have it medium rare but it came out on above medium. Services was not good as waitress served cold bread after we finished starter. The butter was taken straight from fridge so cold and hard. In my opinion, the restaurant doesn't live up to its hotel.

Dinner at Scholars is a treat not to be missed if staying at the Stirling Highland hotel. I have stayed at the hotel on many return visits to Scotland and always eat at least once here. The experience is quite relaxed and the staff quick and efficient. At present the choice from the menu is very good, but the slow cooked beef was the one to go for and was simply gorgeous.

Visited this hotel with vouchers from Amazon for the sparkling afternoon tea as this was our first time at this hotel we were really looking forward to it. But the afternoon was a disappointment but the service was shocking we were half way through our sandwiches before the tea arrived and the sparkling wine never made an appearance at all .

we had dinner two evenings here and enjoyed it both nights , it does seem a popular place for dinner as it was quite busy so you would have to book for dinner, service can be a bit on the slow side at times, perhaps due to the biz.

The quality of both dinner and breakfast was top quality and very enjoyable.A great selection of meals at very reasonable prices. The children's meal was not just generic chicken nuggets, but proper strips of chicken which was a welcomed change. The restaurant is well laid out and plenty of room between tables.Staff are very friendly and will attend to requests without issue. Always a friendly, welcoming smile and great with the kids.

As part of a spa day package we had lunch at the hotel . A set menu with limited choice but good variety . We had chicken liver pate with oatcakes and soup for our starters . Both were delicious . The mains were battered cod with chips and peas - large portion and beautifully cooked . Very tasty . The pasta unfortunately was overcooked , combined with a runny sauce it let the rest of the day down . Good atmosphere - with people coming from the spa in their robes . Busy restaurant . The hotel was an old school so It's a bit quirky. Pleasant, helpful staff

Scholars is one of those restaurants that you don't hear a lot about. It was only when telling others that we were going that they would say how much they enjoyed dining there.I went there with my partner and two nieces and we were very pleasantly surprised.Service was polite and attentive, the surroundings quiet and relaxed and the food tremendous.I would highly recommend Scholars for a quiet elegant meal.

We went for dinner and ordered o bottle of Rioja wine, waited ages, had to ask twice before being informed that they did not have any, settled for a bottle of merlot which when it came was presented to guests at another table before being directed to ourselves. Service could be improved. All staff members were extremely pleasant.

Table booked for 8.15, seated 10.15, very young staff who were very pleasant but unsure how to handle a number of frustrated hungry guests...not their fault they did there best. Limited food left when we eventually got sat down. Although the staff apologised, no reason was given for delay. This may just have been a particularly bad night or some catastrophe may have occurred which caused the delay on this occasion, but 2 hours delay, without explanation is unacceptable, and not what you would expect in a 4star hotel. On this basis , I could not recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant is known for good food ( I had very tender chicken breat with a haggis croquet, and whiskey cream sauce: delicious!) and the service was very good. My only criticism pertains to the decor and atmosphere, which was old fashioned. In my view, a wasted opportunity.

Delicious food and the staff are fantastic. Let's praise the young people who work in the restaurant. Most of them are university students earning a few pounds and they are absolutely first class.

The banquet rooms are cavernous...three story ceilings. Heavy linen etc. The pre-ordered Scottish specialties are served hot or cold as fits the dish. Service is quiet and competent.

The menu was good if you eat meat and chicken, however choice was limited for fish and vegetarian. My meal was good but my partner's starter of wood pigeon was overlooked ,he returned it but the second attempt was overlooked as well. They didn't charge for it. The cheese board was great .

My wife and I were given the gift of a voucher for afternoon tea for two in multiple locations, we decided to use it at the Stirling Highland Hotel at Spittal Street, Stirling. Since this hotel was an old school and does have some charm and a great location we were also checking out possible wedding venues for my Daughter and her Fiancé.When I asked at the front desk for the location for the tea I was given a puzzled look, then a colleague pointed us upstairs to the Bar, this was actually known as the Headmasters study.I was to be sorely disappointed by the quality and presentation of the high tea, there was only one small pot of jam and some double cream in a small ramekin to serve 4 scones I overheard another customer ask for more Jam and some Butter, there was also a small chocolate eclair that was certainly more than a day old and had evidence of refrigeration on the top, along with two small sponge cakes. The Sandwiches included were mostly white bread [no options] which my wife could not eat, and the quality of the fillings were poor.We were seated under a window that had not been cleaned in some time, in fact the room itself looked a little tired. My wife enquired about the wedding planner brochure and spoke to a senior member of staff about our experience who then apologised and took her telephone number saying someone would call, surprisingly no-one has called.

We had a beautiful meal at Scholars on Saturday night. The staff were welcoming and friendly and promptly showed us to our table. The meal itself was excellent. I had pigeon breast with black pudding to start and my husband had kedgeree. Both were delicious, and then we both opted for venison wellington for our mains which, again, was delicious. The desserts were an absolute treat and all in all it is one of the best meals we've had. I highly recommend eating in Scholars and give it an A+!!

Dined here on a recent stay and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were very welcoming and nothing was a bother. We were given a menu to look at while we had a drink and our table got ready, order was taken before we were lead to our table. Starters were served quick and were delicious, crayfish cocktail and tomato and mozzarella salad. Mains soon followed and were just as nice, salmon and beef were both cooked to perfection and finished off with creme brûlée and ice cream. Well priced and would highly recommend!

After remortgaging the house we decided to get some lunch at the Snack Stop. We had lots of money in the bank and decided to use as much as possible. Suffice to say we weren’t let down. Upshot is if you want a ridiculously expensive lunch on paper plates and cardboard cutlery then this is the place for you. £6.50 for a box of 6 sad looking nuggets , £9.99 for a baked potato with 2 fillings. Keep driving past so your kids will get some Christmas presents this year.
