This is a lovely place but let down by how chaotic it was . I got two scones and two coffees took the scones to our table and was told the drinks would be brought across, The scones were hard ( certainly not fresh ) I had trouble biting mine I had to cut it up to eat it , it was dry , I also noticed someone took a scone back I heard the girl say it must of got mixed up with the fresh ones , ours must have been last weeks ,It was 15 minutes before we got our drinks I noticed several tables hadn't got theres either , people were going to the counter to complain by this time . Just needs a bit more organising, who wants to eat a scone without a drink !!!..on the other hand we will go again to try the Gardeners lunch which looked delicious

Unless you have a compelling reason to visit the beautiful gardens of the Scampston Estate, just a mile or two east of Malton off the A64, forget rounding off the experience with lunch or a snack at the Café. The Café itself doesn't disappoint, but the quality of the food offer and value for money are simply out of touch with reality. On this occasion, we were told that there were staff shortages and so a limited menu was in place; they had ample opportunity to put alternative measures in place but still couldn't meet the demands of properly servicing the establishment on the Sunday over the bank holiday, the last in May, and potentially one of the busiest long spring weekends before half-term. The so called 'sandwiches', consisted of a huge uninspiring bread bap with filling, served with a few crisps, a small mixed salad and some coleslaw. My partner played safe and opted instead for quite the smallest square of chocolate brownie I have seen, and whilst tasty, it clocked up £4.25. Overcome by what I can only describe as menu puff beyond words, I decided on the scotch egg, once again served with the obligatory crisps, salad leaves and a spoon of coleslaw. The scotch egg itself was very overly chilled in a 'cold' sense, unfortunately masking the flavour of what was a reasonable product, although falling considerably short of the menu description. The few 'crisp' salad leaves were anything but crisp, limp and virtually tasteless, and with no salad dressing, and none offered. The maker of the coleslaw needs a few short lessons on how to put together a delicious slaw side. The table opposite opted for the 'tiny' pork pie variant with the very same production line accompaniments; let's just say it made the scotch egg look like a positively good choice. All of that could be forgiven of course, if it were not for the fact that the scotch egg and pork pie plates cost an unsuspecting diner a lofty £8.95 per plate. Another diner adjacent to us made a complaint about their sandwich. When challenged about the situation, the assistant said they had known about these shortages for a whole week before. I asked about straight forward value for money, and received a crisp reply that she together with the Café Manager made up the prices, and they had to make a profit. Yes, of course you do, but the Café Manager is clearly getting some of the basics skewed, and surprise surprise, the Manager was nowhere to be seen. Come on Scampston Café, you've a super facility in the grounds of one of the great houses of North Yorkshire, get a grip. If you want to experience great quality, flair and fair value for money, go to Sledmere House Café instead, or one of Castle Howard's eateries.

The gardens are so lovely but the cafe is rubbish if you've got kids and you want more than cake. The kids lunch bag included a babybel, pombears and some raisin which is all OK but the sandwich was ridiculous- a big floury roll with really thick hand cut ham in it. There is absolutely no way my 2 year old would eat that and when I requested sliced bread instead they said they didn't have any. I question how many children would be happy to eat very thick cut ham in a floury bun. Would have been nice to have a piece of fruit in there too. My 'panini' was a very dry toasted ciabatta roll with a lot of cheese, a few whole sundried tomatoes and a few basil leaves - I don't often leave lunch in a cafe as its a lot of money to eat out but I left most of it. I could go on but I won't. Visit for the garden and get a drink and a cake but I'd bring a picnic if I were you

We called in for our morning coffee break before looking around the garden. The scones we had were good, as were the drinks. It was probably the most we'd paid for a coffee break. It is classy, service is good - I suppose that's what you're paying those prices for.

Visited for a family reunion meal and was really impressed by everything. Friendly, professional staff. Exceptionally clean toilet facilities. Ordered a prawn sandwich and a beer. Was informed that the beer is locally brewed and was great value for money at only £4.95. The sandwich was served on a soft granary roll and was amazing. The price was £8.95, which was great value for such a large portion size. Shame it is not closer to home or I would be definitely become a regular. Beautiful setting and a lovely relaxing afternoon.

Fantastic fresh food with a very warm welcome. Arriving at the cafe it was very busy but that didn’t affect the service, we were welcome by a lovely lady who told us to pick a table and go to the till to order with table number. There were very tempting cakes on display at the tills. After ordering the food arrived in a speedy manner and was delicious. I had a salad bowl which was a plate full of colourful fresh salad and coronation chicken. My husband had a yummy bacon and Brie panini, my daughter was truly spoilt with a kids bag that has a number of yummy snacks and a sandwich. She also loved the colouring sheet of the gardens. My little dog was given some water which was a nice touch. I will also the mention the toilets as I normally judge somewhere based on them. There is no stone unturned here. What a amazing immaculately clean and well done to whom is organising the cafe. There was everything you could need displayed in a basket for mums, babies and people who need personal items.

We enjoyed it so much we went back later in the day for ice cream which was also absolutely gorgeous. Would definitely recommend, and will be visiting again.

After walking around the beautiful walled garden, surrounding grounds and lake, the Walled Garden Restaurant provided the perfect end to our visit. The restaurant is pleasant, clean, and provides excellent food and good service. My "Scampston Gardener's Salad" was probably one of the best "ploughman's lunch" type of meal I've ever had, consisting of a generous concoction of lettuce & other mixed leaves, beetroot, pickle, chutney, pork pie, Yorkshire Ham, Cheddar & Brie cheeses, salad dressing, & accompanied by a warm crusty roll & butter, a glass of red wine and a glass of iced water. My wife had what appeared to be a "bottomless" dish of Prawn & Crayfish salad, warm crusty roll & butter, glass of wine and glass of iced water. We finished off with almond tarts containing raspberries & strawberries. We sat outside on the terrace under a sunshade consuming this mini-feast which came to a modest £16 per head. First Class!

A lemon sorbet with raspberries which I sampled from my mother was exceptional whilst the chocolate fridge cake (I don't think they called it that!) which was my pudding was just what I hoped for. It is a lovely bright room and has interesting local artist paintings hanging to give colour. The one downside to this place, which seems to be the case with every single Estate cafe in the country, is that it will take an age to actually get served. To be fair, this is often as much to do with the unbelievable dithering the customers do, but remains a blight on days out. That aside, it is very reasonably priced and the fare is good. Most importantly of all, the cakes actually taste of cake! One of the last places it seems that has not thrown itself at the altar of the finicky food fad crowd, so if you have some 'condition', you may find your choice limited here. However, as lots of other places are sacrificing the majority for the sake of a whiny, vocal minority who have decided they can't eat sugar this week, frankly, I don't care if your choice is limited. As least you have a choice - in the havens of the food wimp, those of us who can actually eat like a human have to suffer the bland, tasteless excuses for cake that get served.Family of three, tea for two, juice for the boy and a cake each came to <£14.

Lovely food cooked fresh and hot. Very friendly staff in this lovely family run pub. My family go here regular and have tried most things on menu with no faults. Everything has been nice that we've had

Great food and service from the staff. Really enjoyed my meal here. I had the black pudding to start and fillet beef for main. Looking forward to my next visit already!

Lovely warm welcome and pub. The food was absolutely delicious. Belly pork, scallops and minute steak. Just cooked and served beautifully. Very pleasant and professional staff. Will be returning this week. Can’t wait
