Saxon King in Southend-on-Sea

Just got in from having my mums birthday here. Service was slow and our server lacked in every way it's a shame as she didn't have many tables but was just absent. No smiles, no service. Mum had the scampi which she enjoyed. We had the steak and alle pie! Not too bad. Mash was a bit stingy and the veg was wrinkly and they forgot the peas. We had to flag our waitress down for drinks! We ordered puddings. The two toffee puds were bought out in a tiny bowl, no presentation at all and was way below the previous quality. I had the brownie Sunday which was £6.99 for three scoups of ice cream a flake and a 50p sized bit of sponge cake on top! Definitely not a brownie. I returned it uneaten and asked for it to be removed from my bill. The waitress and manager insisted it was a brownie off the children's menu whatever that means. However a brownie Sunday should have square chunks of actual brownie in it! Not a sprinkle of chocolate sponge onto. What a shame. No attempt to right it or please the customer. Sadly no tip left and we won't go back!

We all came down for work drinks, and were severed by Vicky, the service was nothing short of excellent. We were greeted with a smile and served with haste, all while being entertained by a bubbly personality.

After going to beefeeter twice in the past week we thought we'd try the saxon king and was pleasantly surprised that the food was twice as nice so will definitely be returning ,the staff were also more attentive and vicky who served us was very pleasant and friendly lovely food ,staff and experience top notch

Greeted from start to finish with welcome and smiles, unobtrusive waitress service, ready to help. Food was delicious. Cannot express how good this experience was. Would definately come back on a Tuesday for fabulous service.

Last 2 visits lack of meat with roast it's all about the vegetables filling the plate. Not hot sent it back and still not that hot. Roast pork and no crackling but not told before ordering and meats were curled up and tasteless. Our table wasn't laid even though I had booked in advance so got our dinner and had no cutlery so took off another table. We will not be returning.

As a regular visitor we are please to say the staff are very friendly and helpful. Food is very good always hot and delicious. It's a very friendly pub prestaurant with a good atmosphere.

This is my 'local' and visit semi regularly for a couple of drinks in the evening. The staff are absolutely brilliant and there is plenty of seating for drinkers and diners alike. The food is hot and tasty and for 2024 will be going for lunch on Christmas day.

Wait to long for order to be taken and to long for food. Then it's was nowhere near as nice as it sounded on the menu

Got to our table at 3.00. We left at 3.25. we were not even ask for a drink by then, and it wasn't busy, never even said sorry for the wait, service awful. Would not go again.

First time here. It's a bit Harvesters type vibe. Warm earthy colours, lots of wood and old photos etc. Staff were pleasant enough and the food was very nice and served fairly quickly. We had the chicken and leek pie and very tasty it was too. £37 for 2 pies, a Guinness, a coke and a latte. I would go again and give it another go.

Just had dinner with 3 other family members and we all enjoyed every mouthful. I can definitely recommend the soup, cauliflower wings, sticky chicken and salt and pepper calamari to start. Mains was the steak and ale pie and 3 fish and chips. Everything was cooked fresh and was piping hot. We really all loved it. The fish was perfectly battered and not greasy, the chips were perfect and great value for money. We were all stuffed so unfortunately no room for pudding, but they did look good. Vicky served us tonight and she was just so friendly and attentive, another girl served us our food (never got her name) and she was a little diamond too. Will certainly be returning.

Disappointing, firstly the wrong drink was brought up to me, not what I had ordered. The staff though were friendly and corrected their mistake right away. Skipped starters and went to mains. My companions both chose the pizza, which looked very appetising served well with pizza wheels. My choice was the chicken tikka masala. The flavour was good and served with poppadom and naan bread, however it was very dry and I couldn’t eat all of it because of that. We opted for dessert, had a very long wait for the desserts to arrive. One of my companions went for the ice cream, the flavours were vanilla, blood orange and salted caramel. Modified to just the vanilla and blood orange, what arrived was vanilla and chocolate. Nice but not what was ordered, the other desserts were chocolate bomb and salted caramel sundae, they were very nice and enjoyable. There was a 30% discount voucher which we took advantage of. Not a perfect visit but a very nice venue and we will visit again soon.

Lovely pub, popped in for lunch recently food was amazing and possibly the best service I’ve ever received from a woman named Vicky, she was so attentive had a lovely bubble positive attitude and ensured me and my family had a lovely time, can not fault our experience will definitely be returning!

We went for a Sunday Roast today and the food was excellent. Our experience was enhanced by the excellent service that Vicky our server provided to us. Vicky was very personable, efficient and helpful in our choices.

Ok so when we arrived there was a black napkin tissue on the floor. This was actually picked up upon leaving. The floors.look like they haven't been hoovered in a long time. Half of the condiments wasn't at the table, the table was sticky. It was started to be cleaned and forgotten about. Even other tables was going to an empty table for a full salt pot. As for the food. We had the ribeye steak. I asked for medium rare. It came out well done. I sent it back and to be fair what came out was amazing. Perfect steak, a full mushroom, as we only half on both plates before. And the gave us some onion rings as a way of apology. In all honesty I enjoyed the 2nd steak. But it seems the place is being held together by young adults. The cleanliness is appalling, 1st time food is appalling. Service was really good. Our server (didn't get her name but she had a burn scar on her face bless her) she was amazing. Full of smiles from start to finish. I think she is holding the place together from what I can see. Would I go back certainly not. If given the option of paying I wouldn't of but would have given the server a lovely tip. She deserves a lot of credit.

I went in for drinks and a drink with friends before moving on to our event! Unfortunately the food took ages and wasn’t very hot by the time we got it and also no staff to speak to on the day. I will try it again as I believe it was a off day as I’ve been before and enjoyed our time

After asking for a larger table the staff were quick to clear, after there had been a rush. Ordered some bar snacks which were lovely, as well as drinks from the app. Whole experience was very pleasant.

We usually come here nearly every month for lunch, usually everything is very good, this time not so, after ordering we waited awhile for our drinks and 30 mins for our lunch, the veg on my Mum's plate was overcooked the peas were wrinkly and the mangetout was uneatable, carrots were done to within an inch of their lives, there was no green salad with the lasagne it was just a very small amount of lettuce nothing like what we had before, we then waited at least 30mins plus before waitress came back who offered us cheese biscuits coffee etc so we asked for dessert menu, two of us ordered some ice cream which wasn't quite right it had a funny taste and had icy bits in it, hard to explain really but that was also not eaten. Disappointed this visit, the food wasn't up to its usual standard and the waiting in between getting drinks to lunch and then desserts was much too long.

Lovely family dinner. Terrific food and friendly, helpful staff. Loved the sea bass and daughter really enjoyed her margarita pizza (and fries followed by chocolate sundae!).

Cheap and cheerful. The food is good value for money, but the upholstery could do with a renew programme.

Came up to visit family and they booked us a table at The Saxon King. I had the Mixed Grill. The food tasted amazing and they had very generous portions! The service was brilliant, the staff were very polite and treated us well throughout. Highly recommend! 👍🏻

Lovely restaurant, we come here often. Our waitress was lovely as we're all the staff but special thanks to the young man behind the bar who caught the huge spider that was under our table 😱. The side salad left a lot to be desired as the lettuce was black in parts but overall a lovely evening

The back of the car park was very unkempt and messy, with an old caravan out the back with flat tyres, plus loads of other rubbish backing onto the back of the restaurant. There was an absolutely awful smell also, which I can only assume was a drainage issue, but the nonetheless, is not very pleasant when you're arriving for a meal. The tables our group were sat at were sticky and wobbly. The leather chair had previously split and so had black tape holding it together. Some of the doors of the cubicles in the womens' toilets had no lock; I can never understand this in places, surely it isn't difficult to replace a lock? These negative points aside, the staff were friendly, the food was lovely and the prices were reasonable. There is a nice little play area out the back that our children played in for a short while, but genuinely, we could not stand the drain smell so we left sooner than we may have otherwise done.

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon having booked a table. It wasn’t too busy and it took a while to be seen by a member of staff to show us to our table. Once we sat down we had a lovely waitress take our drinks order. Drinks arrived promptly and then we have our food order. Starters were pate and prawn cocktail and our daughter’s dippers and chips were requested to come out with our starters. These took 45 mins :( But the food was wonderful. I ordered a kebab for £15 as my main. It was lovely however 3 small pieces of chicken and 2 of chorizo doesn’t warrant £15 :(

Smells like poo outside . Food takes well too long to come out. £100 for four people meal was worth at least £30. Steak medium rare came chewy. Disgusting. The best thing about the meal was the chips. At leas if it smells like poo outside at least ensure the service is impeccable

Sadly my steak came out like leather and cremated when was supposed to be medium. But got replaced and upgraded to a sirloin. but most of all was the girl who waited on us she was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble you see she was rushed off her feet as short staffed but she smiled and carried on. Her name was Beth she is a credit to the pub. Sadly the manager felt the need to tell her off for something that wasn’t her and we could all hear which was unprofessional.

Went for lunch - food was great only feedback is prefer plates to wooden blocks. Our 7year old loved his food and kids are hard to please! Drinks where nice and cold and glasses clean. Food it's self cook very well, tasty and decent size. Would have liked to have seen a side salad slice of tomato and cucumber spring onion not a lot. But other than faultless in taste.

We went to The Saxon King after walking our dog and this place is amazing. The service was amazing and James was a delight. He was very attentive and accommodating. Highly recommend this place and James, he truly cars about his customers and the service he provides.

The experience was lovely and it was quite open and easy to navigate around the restaurant. They have an outside garden with benches with round table tops, and various sections in the eating area. You must wait to be seated, the restaurant is table service only. The BBQ chicken was nice and the chips were okay, they were very accommodating for my food allergy and gave me options with the dessert. They had a separate GF menu, which was nice to see.

I have sent feedback on the Saxon king website as to why I was unhappy with my experience at the pub this evening. Very disappointing

The atmosphere is good, I had my pre prom there and had lots of space for photos with my family and friends. And an area to ourselves. The staff were very helpful and chilled back. Had the best time. Would defo recommend. The service is great, and food is amazing lots of various meals to choose from.

Food is delicious and fresh, music is never too loud to distract from a conversation but is always playing bangers. Even if you don’t drink and just want to enjoy the garden the staff are always happy to serve an ice cold beverage :) best local pub in the Southend area

We really enjoyed our visit to The Saxon King. The restaurant looks very appealing and has a nice atmosphere. It was a very warm day but we were comfortable inside as there is air conditioning. If we had wanted to stay outside, there is a lovely area for outdoor dining. Staff very attentive & friendly. Food is amazing! Nice big portions beautifully presented 🤗😋

We had a really lovely roast lunch here and i was able to use my shareholder voucher so all in all it was an excellent meal at a very decent price. huge portion and tasty food - we will be back very soon. Easy to book, too and loads of parking.

Went to the Saxon King in Southend with my family, we were delivered out starters, and mains with a smile and the waiter Luke who we got to briefly know was very open about what he studies when we asked him and madd us feel very welcomed. The Staff at the bar where extremely helpful when deciding what i wanted and providing me with a lovely table where i was able to watch my grand children whilst the played The Saxon King is a beautiful pub and i would highly recommend visiting if your in the area. The food is amazing, the service speed is immaculate and the interior is extremely clean. 10/10 Would recommend

Visited The Saxon King with two friends a couple of weeks ago. Was originally seated near the bar which we didn’t want but was moved swiftly but the manager (and his dry sense of humour 😂) and served by the lovely Vicky. A good eve out with lovely food and atmosphere. Thankyou.
