Brilliant little cafe, we stumbled across this little gem while looking for some breakfast and we was amazed at both the price and the quality of food. Staff were very friendly and the seating was brilliant loved the music on the first floor we had an amazing time and this will definitely become a spot we come back to again and again on our trips to your

Stopped for a quick lunch. Sandwiches and soup were good. You need good mobility to get up and down a narrow windy staircase. Only criticism is they don’t give tap water and waitress said only bottled water available to buy. This was given with a glass so why not provide a glass of water and reduce plastic??

We stopped off at Sandwitches during our visit to York The coffee was good The waitress seemed unsure about availability of some options My partner had a toasted sandwich that was quite good I went for for the sandwich option however the bread was soggy and the tomato simply cut in half so two big chunks both difficult and unpleasant to eat I chose to leave it When paying I did give feedback to lady but she did not seem that concerned or interested I have looked at previous reviews and this has been mentioned before It seems a shame that this simple issue cannot be resolved

Absolutely disgusting. I went in with my family - my husband and 2 children - my daughter was eating a corn dog that she had almost finished, we had promised her and her brother a sweet treat and hot chocolate while my husband and I had a coffee each, some food and a sweet treat. We were seated all the way to the top of the cafe and then told we had to leave because my daughter was eating a corn dog. I explained we would have spent at least £30/£40 so therefore they lost our custom and I said it was shame. The owner who had sent one of his waitresses to ask us to leave told me it was a shame we were planning to eat our own food in a small business; I informed him it was only my daughter who is 7 years old and that we would have spent more. He was very rude and unwelcoming. My son also cut his thumb on the metal staircase bannister . Unfortunately we have been here before but will now never return. It ruined our afternoon after the way he spoke to me.

Un gran café en el centro de York, muy peculiar. Tienes que ser capaz de subir una escalera de caracol. La comida era genial. Baguette de brie y cebolla caramelizada y baguette de bistec y queso con sabrosos cafés con leche. Una joya escondida.

In all of the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Market and the hordes of people traversing the Shambles it would be very easy to overlook the hidden gem that is Sandwitches. We almost did, but by chance noticed it and ventured in out of the crowds. In such a small setting we were not hopeful of a table but as luck had it there was one free on the first floor. The cafe promises 2 floors of themed and informal dining and it did not disappoint. The chairs were comfortable, tables felt a little low (but I'm well over 6 foot so most things are) but the surroundings were cosy and the staff were quick and attentive. We were there at lunch time so my partner ordered a Sandwich and I had the steak and mushroom filled jacket. Considering there was not much difference in the price, we felt the Sandwich was a bit disappointing. 4 triangles on supermarket bread and basically some crisps... But on the other hand, when you order a sandwich in a cafe... You get what you get and you don't get upset! My loaded jacket was excellent, steak was a little bit over how I prefer it (blue/rare)... but I'm fairness, I didn't ask for it a certain way and I'm not exactly sure what the random dusting on the edges of the serving plate was meant to be but it definitely didn't have a negative impact on the taste meal as a whole. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Couldn't have picked a nicer, more intimate place to celebrate our anniversary! Staff must have legs of steel going up and down those stairs all day and still keeping a smile on their faces! If you changed the bread on the Sandwiches to be home/local bakery made or even a thick farmhouse/crusty it would have been 5* without question and if we were more local we would definitely be back!!

Overpriced and very disappointing. The person that served us made us feel it was an inconvenience to order to take out and we had to wait outside for them to be made ! Got cheese and onion, onion was chopped so thickly I had to take lots of it off or you could barely taste the cheese. Also a cheese and ham which was on cheap white bread. Both had fallen apart in the box. It did come with some salad, coleslaw and an odd mix of crisps. Sorry but a supermarket meal deal each would have been better value and just, if not more enjoyable. Save your money !

Our order was taken and repeated to us but when it arrived two out of the four meals were wrong! The salad was greens but all the vegetables were heavily pickled so spoiled the taste. The soup was watery although tasted nice could have been thicker. Given that its theme is witches the inside decoration had no reference to them!! Mainly films and sayings?!

We stumbled across this bistro on a stop off on our way home from Yorkshire. Menu has a good choice. We were a family of 4 (2 children 6&9). Stairs are steep to the floors so be cautious and its very cosy. The service was so friendly. Really attentive towards the children and going above and beyond making sure they were happy. This makes a huge difference being a young family as we know children can often appear unwanted in some eateries. The lady even made something that wasn't on the menu. The menu is what I would call, covers everything without being too fancy. We forgot to mention the homemade soup was absolutely amazing. All the meals were delicious. Thanks!!

Don’t ask any questions about the menu, or any slight alternation to an item! To be fair, the food we had was good. But staff attitude is awful. Chef thinks he is Gordon Ramsay. Apparently, customers need to ‘respect the food’. How about respecting the customers ? I dare say that the owner will respond to this review in his usual aggressive and pompous style. That will not do you any favours. Take the criticisms and learn from them.

We stumbled across this cafe after walking through the city centre. To its credit, the food we eventually got was ok, well portioned and tasty - in particular the salmon and cream cheese bagel. Initially my wife (who is pregnant) asked for one of the rump steak sandwiches and asked for it to be well done, as being pregnant she couldn’t eat partially cooked meat. The server stated that “chef will not do this because of timings and he already has a few orders on”, this is despite us explaining that my wife was pregnant. It just failed to meet basic requirements which was extremely disappointing. The service was bordering on argumentative especially when my friend also asked for the club sandwich with no mayonnaise to be told the sandwich will fall apart without it, would this be said if she was allergic? Come on, where’s the basic level of service. Having looked at previous reviews it seems that this is isn’t the first time the cafe has refused to cater for basic dietary needs - because the chef “will not” cook things in certain ways because he was taught to “respect food”. Unfortunately, I think he fails to see the bigger picture.

£47.60 for four sandwiches and drinks. The prices on the menu did not match the price we were charged. £8.95 for a steak philly sandwich on the menu, we were charged £10.50. £7.50 for a basic cheese and ham sandwich. £6.95 on the menu. Check your bills before you leave as the menu price does not reflect the price charged.

We ordered a vegetarian breakfast and asked to have the fried egg ‘well done’. A simple request yet we were told that the chef wouldn’t do this as he didn’t have time. It was busy but a fried egg is easy to overcook at the best of times. When we switched to the vegan breakfast we were told there were no hash browns; not a problem at this point as just wanted to eat. However being charged 20p less overall for said omission didn’t sit right. Lovely little cafe and quirky appeal makes for an otherwise nice pitstop while exploring York’s intriguing and interesting streets. Points lost for only poor service and seemingly poor understanding of simple culinary tasks.

We visited here as a family and were happy to find somewhere independent to eat with a tasty sounding menu. How wrong we were to make this choice! I ordered the Brie and salami ciabatta toasted sandwich, which sounds delicious! What I received was an extremely poor quality square ‘ciabatta’ (nothing of the sort) that strangely seemed as if it had been squashed and toasted to within an inch of its life, then had a few slabs of Brie shoved in with three tiny slices of cheap rubbish pepperoni type thing, clearly after the bread had been toasted. The cheese hadn’t melted at all and It was the worst, most dry and horrible sandwich I have ever eaten. And I am usually very forgiving! Was like eating two pieces of cardboard with a bit of brie shoved inside. The side of fries was £4.25 and there were about 25 of them, and they were really weird and dry. Absolute daylight robbery. My husband’s loaded fries with chicken and bacon was just as bad. Honestly feel like I’ve been robbed. Worst meal I think I’ve ever had, and we eat out a lot! And before the owner starts embarrassing himself by fighting back in the comments, no I didn’t say anything at the time because I had my two kids with me and I am bloody knackered as it is without kicking up a fuss in a tiny cafe. When I don’t complain I don’t usually write a review because it’s unfair, but the shear cheek and lack of any ounce of care and pride in what you are serving to customers made me override this. Truly terrible. The only reason I’m giving two stars is because you did accommodate my little boy and did him a smaller portion of the sausage and chips because you don’t have a kids menu.

Visiting York with my Husband, sll the places we passed for lunch, were very busy. We kept walking until I spotted Sandwitches. We were welcomed straight away and led, on a narrow, winding staircase, to the first floor. There we had a choice of comfy seats, or sitting at a table. We opted for the table. The table service was quick. We went for cups of tea and burgers. Mine with oat milk, his with cows milk. I had the spicy Vegan burger and my Husband the brie & bacon topped burger. I'm not keen on little plastic sachets, but made use of a couple of them, as my burger salad anf chips would have been dry otherwise. My Husband was impressed by his and he likes a good burger. Mine could have been spicier, but I like my food very spicy! Overall, a great place for lunch, with friendly, welcoming staff and quick table service. The theme wasn't Witchy, for the second floor it was music and the third floor, where the toilet is, films.

We chose here because we like to use independent businesses rather than bland chains. It’s a great location in the city centre, in a very old and quirky setting and there was a good selection on the menu. The service was friendly and fast. We enjoyed our drinks (mocha and a milkshake) and ordered a club sandwich with a cheese melt - which we were told came as a toasted sandwich - and a BBQ sandwich with a side order of fries. Both sandwiches sounded delicious from the descriptions. The food was sadly disappointing though. The fries were really bad; dry and like cardboard as if they’d been reheated. To her credit, the waitress knocked them straight off our bill as soon as we mentioned it but we did feel uncomfortable afterwards, and when we came to pay and I asked if they’d been removed from the bill, she seemed a little grumpy about it. The BBQ sandwich tasted nice but there was very little chicken or BBQ sauce in it. The bread on the club sandwich had seen a little heat but not enough to melt the cheese, which was a small sprinkling of gratings and not the gooey cheesy melt I’d been expecting from a toasted sandwich. We heard other customers complimenting the staff on their food as they left, so perhaps we just made the wrong choices when we ordered.

Bit shocked to be told they could not provide my son with a glass of tap water with our food today and we would have to pay £1.50 (on top of our rather pricey lunch) for a bottle of water instead. I did point out that as they serve alcohol I believe this is actually illegal but they couldn't have been less interested. Apparently the reason is that it would be "unhygenic" to serve water in one of their glasses as their sink is small. I know. It's nonsense. They were serving a full range of all kinds of drinks in glasses. At least be honest that you are trying to get as much money out of people as possible. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186346-d7626364-r899755526-Sandwitches_Cafe_Bistro_York-York_North_Yorkshire_England.html#

Sandwitches is definitely a place to visit just for the building it's in. It's rare to be able to eat in an old house from centuries ago, and it provides a nice ambience, though be warned most of the seating is up a spiral staircase (a necessity due to how small the house is) so it may not be the most accessible to those who will have trouble there. The food itself is nice. Lovely welcome, great ambience, decor was quirky as was the building! Was shown upstairs to a table around the corner there was already a family of 3 leaving as they’d eaten! I had to remind the waitress that I was there and ordered a jacket potato along with a drink! The drink appeared, while just relaxing in the very comfy chairsI heard someone downstairs (the spiral staircase made the chatter travel) that a meal has been sat there and was now cold! This was 1/2 hour after my order! When I asked they said there was a delay on my food order due to a queue! There as no on downstairs and only one other person upstairs that arrived prior! I had to leave as now 45 mins from order! They did offer a complimentary drink due to this. Went downstairs to pay for my Coke Zero to ask why I was lied to as obv the food that was cold was mine! The staff member came out and was really apologetic, she knew I’d been lied to about it Amd did say no charge for the drink! All in all was disappointing not to have the food as the people leaving as I arrived said it was fantastic! All it needs is the waitress that served me to have been better with communication! There was 3 behind the counter including kitchen and somehow this slipped! We all make mistakes. I’m hoping to have a better experience next time as overall the place looked excellent and the staff where friendly even though I was very blunt as I was now verging on H’angry!

We followed previous recommendations and were greeted and treated with friendly staff, service was quick but the meals were spoilt due to awfully tasting sausages with our breakfasts. We paid and left but won’t be returning.

Quirky themed cafe, the bacon sandwich and coffee quality were outstanding, the spiral staircases could be a challenge, and the staff must be fitter than an Olympic athlete

I ordered a Scone and cream with a cup of tea x 4. Everything was lovely even the wonderful waitress but I have to say I was so disappointed to not get clotted cream. It was whipped cream. Proper cream would have been 5 stars.

I had researched somewhere for a light lunch on a visit to York. With the weather being horrendous, very wet, we were following directions on Google maps. If I am honest we would probably have walked past it as it doesn't have a big street frontage. Anyway, a welcome retreat from the rain. Quirky inside, we enjoyed the music. A lovely sandwich, salad and coleslaw lunch had by all.

Definitivamente vamos a volver

We stopped here for a quick breakfast due to the breakfast goods not being delivered to the hotel we stopped at. The ladies were really helpful in letting us move from outside to inside because of the sun (who knew it could be so hot so early). The Sausage bap and tea all round was great for all of us. Well done to the servers for getting everything up and down the stairs

We stopped here for breakfast on a Sunday morning whilst visiting York for the weekend. 10am and many places not open. I’m glad we found it, it was amazing. A lovely quirky place with fantastic food. My husband had the large breakfast and said it was the second best breakfast he’d ever had! (First one was in the Lakes). My son and I had sausage and Bacon baps and they were beautiful. Good thick bacon my other son had crumpets and choc milkshake, he said the milkshake was the best ever. The coffee was fantastic too...I love York and finding these little cafes is a bonus we will definitely be back. Thank you

When I used to live in York, it was always my go to cafe for myself and friends. The name and the aesthetic of the place was what grabbed my interest. I love the food and especially the hot drinks (the orange hot chocolate I'd highly recommend) and the milkshakes. It's got such a warm and calm atmosphere. Would highly recommend for those who are alternative and would happily visit again anytime I am in York.

Started off with a snack in this amazingly quaint cafe before exploring York.Amazing food and wonderful service.I had the small breakfast which wasnt small!!! And my husband a jacket potato with chilli which was huge. Nothing was too much for the waiting staff as they continued to traipse up and down two spiral staircases. The music was fantastic (80s).Would we come again.....definitely

I booked this hotel for valentine and a birthday treat for my wife. On 1st impression the hotel was good and the manager Paula, was very polite and helpful. However this soon change when it come to the evening meal that were advertised with the booking and the same price as as the room, I phoned the hotel twice and sent an email for more information on this, that I got no response to. My wife phone the day after to query the menu and book the table. When we sat down at the table we was given a different menu so I asked that we had the deal online booked and the meal was included, to the response of no you only booked bed and breakfast not dinner bed and breakfast so wasn't entitled to this, and we had to pay on top of the booking for the meal. To which I wasn't happy at but was told I hadn't rang and requested this option. Nowhere on their website does it offer bed and breakfast or dinner bed and breakfast, this is a SCAM TO GET PEOPLE THERE. We approaching Karl the owner in the morning at breakfast and asked for the terms and conditions as it states on the advert and was told its a direct booking and we hadn't called and requested dinner bed and breakfast. I asked where on his website it states you have to ring up and request, although we did when booked the table. He then became very rude and aggressive and was angry when I told him it's a SCAM. And we booked direct through his website. PLEASE AVOID THIS HOTEL, STAFF VERY RUDE, PUB AREA NOT CLEAN, STAFF WERE DRINKING SHOTS WELL WORKING, THE MANAGER IS A THUG THAT WILL NOT HAVE A REASONABLE CONVERSATION WITH YOU. ALL THE LOCALS AVOID THE PUB DUE TO KARLS ATTITUDE. SCAM, SCAM, SCAM ON THERE OFFERS ON PACKAGES ROOM AND FOOD. Thanks Peter.

It was my first visit and I was not disappointed. I loved all the restaurants, cafes and shops. It was market day while we were there but as it had snowed, only a few stalls came. We certainly got friendly service from the stall holders though. I shall go back for another visit soon, but book everything in advance, especially the restaurants, which get very busy.
