Sandwitches York in Ryedale

Lovely bacon sandwich with brie and a beaked potato for my daughter, both were.well received and we'll come again if we're ever in York . Maybe it is time to have a redecorate but it's certainly full of Character.

We ordered a vegetarian breakfast and asked to have the fried egg ‘well done’. A simple request yet we were told that the chef wouldn’t do this as he didn’t have time. It was busy but a fried egg is easy to overcook at the best of times. When we switched to the vegan breakfast we were told there were no hash browns; not a problem at this point as just wanted to eat. However being charged 20p less overall for said omission didn’t sit right. Lovely little cafe and quirky appeal makes for an otherwise nice pitstop while exploring York’s intriguing and interesting streets. Points lost for only poor service and seemingly poor understanding of simple culinary tasks.

We visited here as a family and were happy to find somewhere independent to eat with a tasty sounding menu. How wrong we were to make this choice! I ordered the Brie and salami ciabatta toasted sandwich, which sounds delicious! What I received was an extremely poor quality square ‘ciabatta’ (nothing of the sort) that strangely seemed as if it had been squashed and toasted to within an inch of its life, then had a few slabs of Brie shoved in with three tiny slices of cheap rubbish pepperoni type thing, clearly after the bread had been toasted. The cheese hadn’t melted at all and It was the worst, most dry and horrible sandwich I have ever eaten. And I am usually very forgiving! Was like eating two pieces of cardboard with a bit of brie shoved inside. The side of fries was £4.25 and there were about 25 of them, and they were really weird and dry. Absolute daylight robbery. My husband’s loaded fries with chicken and bacon was just as bad. Honestly feel like I’ve been robbed. Worst meal I think I’ve ever had, and we eat out a lot! And before the owner starts embarrassing himself by fighting back in the comments, no I didn’t say anything at the time because I had my two kids with me and I am bloody knackered as it is without kicking up a fuss in a tiny cafe. When I don’t complain I don’t usually write a review because it’s unfair, but the shear cheek and lack of any ounce of care and pride in what you are serving to customers made me override this. Truly terrible. The only reason I’m giving two stars is because you did accommodate my little boy and did him a smaller portion of the sausage and chips because you don’t have a kids menu.

We visited for breakfast , we had a very warm welcome as soon as we walked in , We were shown to our table up the first spiral staircase, really cosy , clean and quirky, the waitress was very friendly , we were very impressed with her , the way she runs up and down those spiral staircases with two or three plates at a time, she is fantastic, the food was excellent, piping hot and delicious, we will definitely be back when we visit York again , Thank you

Visiting York with my Husband, sll the places we passed for lunch, were very busy. We kept walking until I spotted Sandwitches. We were welcomed straight away and led, on a narrow, winding staircase, to the first floor. There we had a choice of comfy seats, or sitting at a table. We opted for the table. The table service was quick. We went for cups of tea and burgers. Mine with oat milk, his with cows milk. I had the spicy Vegan burger and my Husband the brie & bacon topped burger. I'm not keen on little plastic sachets, but made use of a couple of them, as my burger salad anf chips would have been dry otherwise.My Husband was impressed by his and he likes a good burger. Mine could have been spicier, but I like my food very spicy! Overall, a great place for lunch, with friendly, welcoming staff and quick table service. The theme wasn't Witchy, for the second floor it was music and the third floor, where the toilet is, films.

Poor service . Four of us walked in when a previous couple did and they said had plenty of tables then we asked for a four, woman was very rude said no tables for four so we asked nicely is there anywhere else recommend due to us having a disabled woman and women was rude again said no we can’t help. Poor service!!!! Would avoid !

Had a great lunch at this very quirky spot. I visited for lunch with my elderly Aunt and we were lucky to get the only two seats on the ground floor. It’s a steep spiral staircase up to the top two floors with the rest of the tables. The food was excellent and the staff friendly. If you don’t mind stairs a great place to pop into.

Stumbled upon this teeny, tiny cafe with a very winding staircase - lovely, friendly atmosphere and staff. Amazing food. Would highly recommend.

We chose here because we like to use independent businesses rather than bland chains. It’s a great location in the city centre, in a very old and quirky setting and there was a good selection on the menu. The service was friendly and fast. We enjoyed our drinks (mocha and a milkshake) and ordered a club sandwich with a cheese melt - which we were told came as a toasted sandwich - and a BBQ sandwich with a side order of fries. Both sandwiches sounded delicious from the descriptions. The food was sadly disappointing though. The fries were really bad; dry and like cardboard as if they’d been reheated. To her credit, the waitress knocked them straight off our bill as soon as we mentioned it but we did feel uncomfortable afterwards, and when we came to pay and I asked if they’d been removed from the bill, she seemed a little grumpy about it. The BBQ sandwich tasted nice but there was very little chicken or BBQ sauce in it. The bread on the club sandwich had seen a little heat but not enough to melt the cheese, which was a small sprinkling of gratings and not the gooey cheesy melt I’d been expecting from a toasted sandwich. We heard other customers complimenting the staff on their food as they left, so perhaps we just made the wrong choices when we ordered.

Excellent service and food, well worth a visit would definitely use again. Stairs to the top steep but worth it. Friendly prompt service

We stopped here for a sandwich as we were in York and it was raining the entrance is up some quite steep stairs and we were seated in the music section the food its self was nice my mai issue is the seats were slightly to low and the table was to small to fit 3 people with 3 plates on and when I moved some of the sauces and the menu one of the staff took it off the table at the side of me which was empty at the time and stuffed it under the table we were sitting on but didn’t even speak to me she just walked off which I found slightly rude but our actual waitress was very nice and apologized we didn’t stay to long as we had things to do I don’t think id go back again as there are many different places to eat in York but it was nice to try it

Highly recommend this quaint and quirky restaurant in the heart of York, UK. Good, tasty food and superb views to compliment the meal. Great service!

Called in for a quick lunch. Ordered a ham and cheese sandwich which came promptly in a hot bun which spoilt the sandwich. I did comment it would have been nicer in a cooler bun when asked if everything was ok with the food. No reply was made. Very cool reception from staff as a paid my bill and left. Definately not a place I would return to or recommend.

Really quirky and nice space. Bigger inside than it looks and seats very comfy. Friendly team of staff. All our drinks were incorrect (cream when we’d asked without) but we’re still very tasty and overall worth a visit.

Bit shocked to be told they could not provide my son with a glass of tap water with our food today and we would have to pay £1.50 (on top of our rather pricey lunch) for a bottle of water instead. I did point out that as they serve alcohol I believe this is actually illegal but they couldn't have been less interested. Apparently the reason is that it would be "unhygenic" to serve water in one of their glasses as their sink is small. I know. It's nonsense. They were serving a full range of all kinds of drinks in glasses. Visited here with my daughter last week as struggled to find places open which catered for a gluten and dairy free diet. This lovely little cafe catered for both and it was good to see that the serving staff member had a good understanding of people's different dietary requirements. We chose to go for the sandwiches and fries. We were both pleased with the quality and the variety available. My daughter had a non-milk hot chocolate and I had a gingerbread latte. Scrumpy. Certainly recommended

Sandwitches is definitely a place to visit just for the building it's in. It's rare to be able to eat in an old house from centuries ago, and it provides a nice ambience, though be warned most of the seating is up a spiral staircase (a necessity due to how small the house is) so it may not be the most accessible to those who will have trouble there.The food itself is nice. Standard cafe stuff. No complaints there.

This is an excellent little hidden gem. The monster market breakfast was just perfect. Crispy bacon and sausages well done. Great start to a day out in York. Seating is up a small spiral staircase, with quirky little rooms. Overall I would definitely return.

Lovely welcome, great ambience, decor was quirky as was the building! Was shown upstairs to a table around the corner there was already a family of 3 leaving as they’d eaten! I had to remind the waitress that I was there and ordered a jacket potato along with a drink! The drink appeared, while just relaxing in the very comfy chairsI heard someone downstairs (the spiral staircase made the chatter travel) that a meal has been sat there and was now cold! This was 1/2 hour after my order! When I asked they said there was a delay on my food order due to a queue! There as no on downstairs and only one other person upstairs that arrived prior! I had to leave as now 45 mins from order! They did offer a complimentary drink due to this. Went downstairs to pay for my Coke Zero to ask why I was lied to as obv the food that was cold was mine! The staff member came out and was really apologetic, she knew I’d been lied to about it Amd did say no charge for the drink! All in all was disappointing not to have the food as the people leaving as I arrived said it was fantastic! All it needs is the waitress that served me to have been better with communication! There was 3 behind the counter including kitchen and somehow this slipped! We all make mistakes. I’m hoping to have a better experience next time as overall the place looked excellent and the staff where friendly even though I was very blunt as I was now verging on H’angry!

Popped in for breakfast. Service was good and quick. We were a group of 3 and sat upstairs on soft seating. Only issue for us was the lack of table space with the soft seating but food was good, so don’t let that put you off.

A great welcome although we only wanted a hot drink. This cafe is a certain gem! The staff were great the film and music theme brilliant. So good we returned the next day and had the added welcome from Roxy!

This quirky little gem was a highlight of our trip to York. The cafe is film and music themed with walls dedicated to greats like John Wayne, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. The staff were friendly and attentive and chatting to them was lovely, they clearly are passionate about the cafe and it’s unique vibe. The food was lush, I had the steak and onion sandwich which was huge with a lovely side salad and crisps, the steak was cooked a perfect medium and the bread was lovely and fresh. My husband had the sausage and caramelised onion sandwich and he loved it, he said the beetroot in his salad was the best beetroot he had ever had. We can’t wait to come back when we revisit York.

Stumbled on this cafe whilst we were wandering around looking for lunch. Fantastic menu with reasonable pricing. I had the sausage and caramelised onion panini which was lovely. Unfortunately the sausages were a little undercooked for my liking (quite pink in the middle). Mentioned it to the staff and they were so apologetic. A fresh plate was in front of me very quickly. We followed previous recommendations and were greeted and treated with friendly staff, service was quick but the meals were spoilt due to awfully tasting sausages with our breakfasts. We paid and left but won’t be returning.

I ordered a Scone and cream with a cup of tea x 4. Everything was lovely even the wonderful waitress but I have to say I was so disappointed to not get clotted cream. It was whipped cream. Proper cream would have been 5 stars.

Visited here rather than a National Chain and was pleased that they serve Yorkshire Tea and offer Gluten Free Options. Staff were friendly and helpful, we are pleased to recommend.

I had researched somewhere for a light lunch on a visit to York. With the weather being horrendous, very wet, we were following directions on Google maps. If I am honest we would probably have walked past it as it doesn't have a big street frontage. Anyway, a welcome retreat from the rain. Quirky inside, we enjoyed the music. A lovely sandwich, salad and coleslaw lunch had by all.

First visit to this quaint, quirky café and did not disappoint. Will 100% be returning. Food, service and atmosphere is all excellent.

Went to York for the weekend and found this Great little cafe, called in for breakfast on our way home and it was lovely. Great choice in music to wake us up as well

Food, staff and quirky space makes this tea room a top choice. Service is very good with friendly staff and dishes served are plentiful. We are sure to return.

We stopped here for a quick breakfast due to the breakfast goods not being delivered to the hotel we stopped at. The ladies were really helpful in letting us move from outside to inside because of the sun (who knew it could be so hot so early). The Sausage bap and tea all round was great for all of us. Well done to the servers for getting everything up and down the stairs

We stopped here for breakfast on a Sunday morning whilst visiting York for the weekend. 10am and many places not open. I’m glad we found it, it was amazing. A lovely quirky place with fantastic food. My husband had the large breakfast and said it was the second best breakfast he’d ever had! (First one was in the Lakes). My son and I had sausage and Bacon baps and they were beautiful. Good thick bacon my other son had crumpets and choc milkshake, he said the milkshake was the best ever. The coffee was fantastic too...I love York and finding these little cafes is a bonus we will definitely be back. Thank you

Have been multiple times and never been disappointed. Impressed with the meals and their safety measures, with menus and track and trace list all being wiped down after each customer. Also dog friendly!!!!

When I used to live in York, it was always my go to cafe for myself and friends. The name and the aesthetic of the place was what grabbed my interest. I love the food and especially the hot drinks (the orange hot chocolate I'd highly recommend) and the milkshakes. It's got such a warm and calm atmosphere. Would highly recommend for those who are alternative and would happily visit again anytime I am in York.

This cafe may be small but it's fab. Quirky decor and very cosy. We had decent sized bacon sandwhíches, warm tasty scones and the mint hot chocolate to die for. The staff are friendly and cannot do enough to help they even brought sausages for the dog will defo return.

The place we usually use in York was closed so a short walk up the same road and came across this cafe. We were not dissapointed, we will be using this cafe in future. I ordered a sausage bap expecting a couple of sausages and average size roll. Oh no, a roll which filled the dining plate and three proper local butchers pork sausages sourced from just over the road. Keenly priced, good quality, prompt and friendly service. I have read some of the prior reviews and I am glad to see the owner defending his corner. We all have bad days but I cannot take on board some of the comments, not my experience at all. I've said this before and wonder if maybe compeditors are guilty of some of the derogatory reviews. Just a thought?

Fui por recomendación de un amigo y no me decepcionó. Pedimos el desayuno, que estaba bien presentado y recién preparado.El personal estaba disponible para recargar mi consumo de té y fueron muy atentos, la espera de la comida tardó un poco en llegar, pero no en exceso teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de personas allí.Tenía un buen precio por su ubicación y el edificio y la decoración reales eran extravagantes y solo para una experiencia.No dudo en recomendar el lugar y volveré!

¡Tuve un hermoso ‘sandwitch’ con pepinillos y ensalada de verduras! Muy bien presentado calidad del restaurante me sentí! Increíble escalera de caracol de café peculiar estaba en el segundo piso! Gran decoración y ambiente con música variada! ¡Hay que ver las imágenes del piso superior de películas a lo largo de los años y citas de estrellas de la música! Personal encantador también! ¡Recomiendo altamente este café! ¡Volveremos el año que viene definitivamente! ???

Popped in to sandwitches to escape the crowds in the city centre for a quick brew and a mint aero hot chocolate for my other half.

Good little cafe, called on Thursday lunch time, rest of the city busy but we found a little haven of peace in Sandwitches.

good location just off the shambles with homely snacks, interesting decor of rock stars and albums with fascinating spiral stairs.

Quirky place but very poor food. I ordered an egg mayo baguette, baguette was warm which was strange, less than an egg for filling and covered in lettuce. Hubby had a ham salad, ham looked like cheap processed luncheon meat type and the salad was just lettuce? Both had cheap plastic margarine on. Side salad was soaked in beetroot and olives looked like an old bowl full dished out. Same with the crisps, a mish mash of tortillas and I even had one veg crisp! Some were soft and stale. The only thing I enjoyed on my plate was the coleslaw and the cup of tea. Won’t return. I understand people have different tastes etc but the cheap quality of ingredients is outstanding. Especially for the prices. Cost us £15.75 for two sandwiches and two teas. Really regretted trying it when there are so many much better quality food establishments in York.

A group of 6 of us,3 couples visited here on,Friday for lunch.We sat in the upper level and it was really quaint.The sandwiches were very well presented and delicious and baked potatoes,too.The staff were so very welcoming,polite and jovial unlike some other places we visited in,York.

Climbed all the way to the top room in a themed ‘ films ‘ room which was basically a very small room with bits of laminated photos on. Took a while to get to order but when it came it was as requested. It’s ok.

Stopped for a quick family lunch. Staff were fun and friendly. Food was great. Set on three levels which was quirky and interesting. Would return

My wife and I called in for a light lunch on recent visit to York. We scaled the narrow spiral staircase to the first floor with it's musical themed decor and enjoyed the quiet cosy atmosphere. The service was excellent and the freshly made sandwiches so good that we went back again the next day.

A great place for a coffee with a fabulous view of Shambles market from the 2nd floor. You do have to climb up some awkward spiral steps for the view and so not recommended for the very small or very frail and elderly. It also has some old vintage posters and photos of some classic film stars, but has odd sayings on the wall which are easy to ignore. Definitely worth it for the view. Good price coffee too.

Only had a panini , but what a panini!!! Brie and Bacon with Red Onion Chutney, salad, coleslaw and vegetable crisps and tortilla chips. What a plateful, and absolutely gorgeous. Even the café itself is the most interesting place to visit with lots of film and music quotes on the walls. Would certainly return
