What a gem of a place ! The decor was fab and looking bed the music that was played. The waitress was very friendly and smiley ( she was a newbie at the place ) food was very good . Just wish we lived closer .

Ordered a bacon sandwich which came uncooked and freezing cold. Sent it back to then receive it hot but still inedible since it hasn’t been cooked at all. Wouldn’t recommend.

Ordered breakfast which was nice but i did say NO black pudding of tomato, brings me my breakfast what's on the plate back pudding and tomato!!. Apart from that its a nice little place with character

Staff were lovely and the music added a nice ambience. Despite the meat being of good quality, the food overall lacked quality with regards to the bread, crisps and the tomatoes that were not grilled as one would expect. Slightly overpriced for what was served.

Waited over half an hour for a simple plate of nachos and when it did come it was nothing that couldn't be done at home.

Really good hidden gem in the centrel of York!! Love it really good vibe with excellent quality food! Defo recommend With kids and whole family! Portion sizes MAHUSIVE! I got the waffles and you could easily share between 2 people! I love love love it The vibe of the movies/music theme is excellent and shown really well and brings a great atmosphere Also Dog Freindly!!

Quirky place. Maybe I'm a bit old for the place. Food was nice but nothing outstanding. The nacho crisps were beyond bland. Furniture covered in throws not my thing as what is beneath? The decor is black with song lyrics here and there. Worst part is access. Over 3 floors, with loo at the top and it's all spiral stair cases.

AVOID!! Spent about £30 for two awful sandwiches and two hot drinks. Extortionate pricing for what you get - would be better of getting a £3 supermarket meal deal than going here. The coffee was so bad we couldn’t drink it, had to leave the full mug. The sandwich was extremely dry with the least amount of filling I’ve ever seen. All very processed and stale, no fresh food at all. Overall, an absolute waste of money, I don’t recommend.

We had the Wrong menu on our table, with different prices. Check your bills before you leave. Advertised price and the price we were charged were different. £47.60 for four sandwiches and cold drinks. Tried to Air my concerns in a reasonable way, to then be called an idiot. The rudest business owner I have ever met. Who will not acknowledge his cafes error.

Really friendly staff, ordered a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows and also a chocolate milkshake both 10/10. Outdoor seating and two floors indoors.

Food was terrible, sausages were pink in the middle and most of it was either air fried or microwaved. There was a puppy crate and training mat in the entrance - close to the kitchen!! The guy who served us wasn't very accommodating, unable to add things to my meal. The atmosphere wasn't great, the chairs had covers on that were filthy and most of the tables were too small (below knee level). Wouldn't eat here again!

A cute little shop with a spiral staircase. I was scared when I went up, but I was fine when I came down. The third floor was decorated with pictures of movie stars, and I was excited to eat lunch while watching James Dean. The staff at the store were very kind and worked so efficiently that I didn't have to go to the gym just to go back and forth from the kitchen to each floor.

Wonderful atmosphere and great food

Well, I went to Sandwiches Cafe expectin' a proper bacon sarnie, but what I got were nowt but disappointment. That bacon sandwich were as cold as t' winter wind on Ilkley Moor, and as dry as a bone left out in t' sun. Me tea weren't much better neither. Won't be returnin' anytime soon, that's for sure. only positives was it being served quick and the decor was lovely

Lovely little cafe just on the Shambles market area. Three floors linked by spiral staircases, and set in an old Shambles-style house. The interior walls are covered in quotes from musicians along with photos of them at their peak, and it makes for a lovely cozy atmosphere for the excellent food. Dog friendly too!

Great place for breakfast- we had bacon baps, iced coffee & latte. Very historic place with two floors & spiral staircase- great roof tops views. Service & staff brilliant. 👍

A great place for a full English breakfast or just a coffee. The seating areas are up spiral stairs which could be difficult for some to climb. The young lady who was service flew up and down these stairs .any times while we were there, she definitely earns her wage! The food was very nice and a fair price and the service was very good.

What find this place was. Loved the ambience. The food was great and plenty on the plate. The young waitress was very attentive.

we stood outside this cafe deciding whether to go in and the board outside sold it to us. Second oldest house in york 1337, I think it said, so at that our interest peaked, WOW 700 year of house, so when we walked up the stairs to the first floor to find a homage to 80s rock music all over the walls we was a little surprised, if you sell a buildings history on the outside at least follow through with that grab on the interior and create a dining experience to suit the building. The decor didn’t even match the name of the shop. It was all very much a confusing time and I think the other two tables sat around us had the same thought process going off how quiet they were looking around the place, which created an awkward silence. Tried to order food of the large menu to be told we’d ordered of the wrong one and breakfast had gone (sausage sandwich) but then told we could order sausage and caramelised onions from the lunch menu?? then when asked for a sandwich but without the mayo and was told it had to have mayo??? At this point we’re thinking what is going on with this place, but ordered anyway. The food turned up and it followed suit, A serious business rethink required here. although the salad side was nice,

Excellent service, really enjoyed the experience. Upstairs is so unique! The food was amazing and the vibes were fantastic. We recommend the honeycomb milkshake especially! Thank you!

AVOID… dreadfull food and service, they then have the cheek to bill you even if you havn’t touched anything. Great buiness plan 👍 P.s The owners attitude needs attention.

Popped in for breakfast, excelle t food, good quality produceand very tasty. Ordered a large English breakfast and a market monster, both with tea. Generous portions and very friendly staff. The place itself as very quirky, small spiral staircase which the server runs up and down (brave woman). Music themed decor playing good 80's music. Been a few ti. Es now when we visit York. Cant recommend it enough

I always make a stop here when I come to York! Just a lovely simple cafe with a great menu with lots of variety. I especially like the sandwiches which have lots of bread options and a great for a lighter bite if you’re saving yourself for a big meal on an evening. Lovely staff, affordable, good music and decor. Couldn’t ask for more really! Will be back again and again.

Such a lovely and unique cafe! My partner and I wanted some lunch and wasn't too sure where to go (we are not from York) and after browsing the menu and seeing the prices we came here. Did not disappoint! We loved the quirkiness to the place, there's loads of writing, quotes, items and images on the wall which will keep you occupied whilst you wait for your food and during! It has a cosy vibe to it and service was friendly and attentive. Food was lovely and great value for money!

Had high hopes for this quirky little café but was let down by the experience. My first hurdle was that they have a rule that you are not allowed a glass of tap water unless you buy a drink first. I can understand this if someone is just going in for a cake or a drink but we had 2 full English breakfasts and my husband had a coffee. I do not drink milk and have a lot of allergies so quite often just ask for tap water and never ever been refused this in a pub, cafe or restaurant until earlier this week. We spent approx £23 so it was a bit disappointing to find I was not worthy of a glass of water and suggest they reconsider this policy since for that reason I would not recommend or visit this café again. The breakfast was okay but the tomatoes were undercooked and more like you would get in a salad and the toast seemed to have been crisped on a griddle or in a sandwich toaster and was ultra crispy. Do not visit if you have any mobility issues since there is a steep spiral staircase to the seating area and toilets, and it is very cramped and dark with little atmosphere. All in all a very disappointing experience and not the way we were hoping to end our weekend in York.

I always stop by here for a drink and a bite when I'm in town. The different floors decor are fun and I always find something to look on the walls be it the music floor or the movie floor. The coffee is always hot and tasty and they make some mean butties.

Great looking cafe with loads of character, just really lacking in the hot food department. Not sure how they cook their fries but they aren't very crispy and feel reheated! Might just have been our experience but I think there's much better options in the area considering the fairly high price point.

Small sandwich Cafe with a great location, very interesting interior decoration, friendly staff and delicious food. Highly recommend breakfast here. The bacon and waffles with maple syrup is delicious, I also had a side of scrambled eggs on toast and a coffee. Service was fast and friendly. Tables and chairs are snug by American standards but very cozy and this is England. Prices are very reasonable as well. Hope you stop in for a bite!

I had a very lovely little lunch here. The club sandwich. Would recommend it. The cafe is small and set on 2 little floors with a steep spiral staircase. There are posters from Hollywood classics and some smashing old albums too. Would recommend a visit. Dogs are welcome too.

Superb streak and onion panini with the most delicious mayonnaise and side salad. Would highly recommend as a great place to grab a tasty lunch.

Refused to deliver my order after accepting it due to being too busy. Extremely rude phone call with no help offered, they didn't even start to make my sandwich?! This lady has ruined my Christmas.

Began to make the sandwiches and then stopped half way through. Teasing my friend Nathan like this is totally unacceptable.

Ordered sandwiches to be delivered an hour ago (now 12:29pm) and have just received a call to tell us they're too busy to make them.

Waitress wasn’t very friendly or helpful, food was very standard, quirky decor though.

Didn't get a chance to eat the service was terrible. I went in and said I was looking for a table for 7 and could I use the loo before I sat down. The lady was so rude and said the toilets are only for customers. I explained I wanted a table for 7 and could I have a peppermint tea before the others arrived. I went and sat at a table and was asked to move by another waitress as the table I was sat on was for 3 and I was on my own. Again I explained that another 6 where on their way and as they didn't have a table for 7 we where going to use the 2 3 people tables. I was told I couldn't sit at the 3 till other members of my party arrived. Well they arrived 2 minutes later and I told them lets go find somewhere else. I've worked in hospitality for 10 years and never made any customer feel so unwelcome.

Nice quirky cafe, different themes on each floor, the first floor was music themed and upper was film themed. Gluten free menu available. Very nice food would recommend the rump steak sandwich.

The open spiral staircase was a bit scary but the staff & food made it worth the nerves. The toilet is on the top floor so if you're a scaredy cat like me there are public toilets just around the corner. We shall be visiting again on our next travels

Love coming here for our York breakfasts. It's quirky and different. Fast and good service. Great food and coffees/tea. Vegetarians catered for.

Such a great little place, never fails to disappoint. So many good food options and in a great location, lovely to sit on the table outside or in the quirky interior so long as you're able to climb the spiral staircase.

Sat outside and grabbed a coffee but this place has great themed rooms and really good sandwiches. I used to come here as a student a long time ago now!

We are traveling around the UK. We saw this beautiful old building and stopped for lunch. We then had some of the worst food food we have ever tasted. My cheese and tomato baguette barely had any cheese and the bread was so dry I couldn't even eat it. My husband's vegetarian nachos were a laugh. They were nacho crisps topped with coleslaw ( that was the vegetarian part lol ) The quacamole looked like baby vomit... with similar taste. My daughter's chips and BBQ chicken was boiled dry chicken topped with BBQ sauce. Who cooks BBQ chicken like that? My mom's veg soup was greenish water with no flavor.

Had a lovely time looking over the quaint square sipping on a hot (oat milk) coffee and tucking into a delicious slice of vegan lemon drizzle cake. Very pretty place to stop and soak up the atmosphere, with friendly staff too! Highly recommend

Came here for breakfast. Also serving vegetarian options. Kids had waffles which was thoroughly enjoyed. Building is beautiful and well decorated.

Thought we'd try it due to good reviews and on entering and being led up the spiral stairs in an amazing little building we certainly thought the reviews were well founded...that was until we ordered..My wife has a chilli allergy and specified this to the waitress..She said she would relay this to the chef..We got our sandwich with salad and crisps and side of fries...The crisps were mixed with ..yep you got it Sweet chilli flavour was 1 of them so my wife had to leave those and then we noticed the fries were overcooked and looked like they had been warmed up, similar to the ones you find under the tray in your airfryer the next time you come to use it!! We told the waitress and she didn't know what to say apart from I'll let the chef know...The rest was tasty but the way it was handled and still charged for the full meal without question didn't bode well and won't be returning.

Just popped in for coffee so no idea about food. Over 3 floors up a spiral staircase with 4 tables on top floor . Probably not that good if you have mobility issues but sweet young staff obviously keep very fit!

Amazing. A real gem of a find. I really recommend it if you are in a hurry or want to relax. Service was great, food arrived fast and was hot. Latte and hot chocolate were also great. Ignore the 1 star negative reviews, clearly these people went somewhere else...

Nice quirky, small cafe with 2 floors of seating above an entrance/kitchen area on the ground floor. Spiral stairs take you to tables or comfy seats with wall art featuring UK rock bands. Lovely staff and very pleasant food.

Cake and drinks in the afternoon, very disappointed with the carrot cake, as this came with synthetic cream and strawberry sauce, this was very dry hence the sauce maybe?. I also had soya milk in my drink, but they put cream on my cake??!? Chocolate fudge cake was cold after we asked for hot ? Not great...

2 x bacon waffles and maple syrup. Cold, 3 rashes bacon, 3 potato waffle sized waffles, almost no syrup whatsoever - just under £20 with delivery Never again, a complete ripoff of price to quantity and quality ratio. Would have been better off getting the McDonald’s pancakes that my girl wanted but convinced her she’d prefer this… ^ Left this review on just eat, and the reply from the restaurant is atrocious. Sandwitches Cafe replied That’s your opinion. I made it and it was a good size. Please don’t order again. In my opinion, as the customer 3 Heinz potato waffles and 3 rashers of bacon is not £8's worth of food. It was cold, lacking the syrup and frankly a disgrace to serve and charge someone for what we got. The audacity of the restaurant telling us not to order again when i clearly already stated in my review i would not be ordering again. I cant see this place staying open too long with an attitude like that... Any bad review is met with denial and arrogance. Its like something of Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares! Edit - reply to the response - Why are you so defensive and flat out rude when there a people telling you they had a bad experience? The worst thing about your restaurant is you and your attitude! An how are you have the audacity to tell someone to learn how to cook when you charge £8 for toaster waffles and bacon! Absolute disgrace... Reply - How am I lying?! My opinion is my opinion. Your attitude is flat out disgusting, and now there’s an upload picture feature everyone will see what you sent me and my little girl for the price we paid. One picture is worth a thousand words and all that. I’m not trying to ruin your business I’m trying to get you to see what you produced for what you charged is outrageous. Go to any other restaurant within the bar walls serving waffles and see what you get for the price you pay… Go ahead, throw more insults and “defend” that…

Called in for brunch, lovely people, lovely food, good coffee. Good choice of sandwich fillings and they are all freshly made. The vegetable soup was a hit too. Will definitely be visiting again. Revisited twice this weekend, same great service, staff are lovely, plenty of choice on the menu, really enjoyed the coffee. Great atmosphere. Love this historic tiny cafe.

Excellent cosy little café in the heart of historic York. Seating space is at a premium here but the food was first class and excellent value for money plus the staff were lovely, will definitely return. Recommended!

This is certainly a hidden gem of York! We had breakfast here at the start of a day out and we were not disappointed at all! Delicious and fairly priced breakfast and also dog friendly which is a huge plus for us. Music themed - which meant I spent a lot of time reading the quote and lyrics which decorate the walls 😂 - a quirky and unique place with a relaxed friendly atmosphere. I’m sure we’ll be back next time!

From the outside you would never be able to guess how the inside and upstairs looks. It is a real gem in York, the prices are excellent and the staff were so lovely. If you are passing definitely visit, even just for a coffee I promise it's worth it!

What a lovely, warm and welcoming little cafe this place is. Truly a hidden gem where the food and service are excellent even though I only popped in for a coffee and bacon sandwich (one of the best I've ever had). Oh and REALLY doggy friendly as well. Pippin loved his sausage. 🐶 100% Reccomend.

Superb food and interesting upstairs with music and film memorabilia. Had the cheese club sandwich and it was probably the best sandwich I’ve ever had. Rounded off with carrot cake and a black coffee, I couldn’t quite finish it! Food quality and presentation is superb and service excellent too. Nice clean toilet.

Just been here. Ordered a large full English, the egg had both a hair cooked into it and a blue stringy thing... I informed the staff there was absolutely no attempt to fix the issue. Would avoid like the plauge in future.(in no way did they attempt to replace the egg. I was only informed it was taken off the bill when I paid. And perhaps your chef is colour blind especially since it was cooked into the egg. I certainly don't carry a gas stove on my person. If this is your responsible to criticism then I believe either you or your staff aren't long for hospitality.) No need to further edit your response to claim i have never been there when the part of my review is a direct response to your accusations, admitting I have been there. I would also be able to provide the transaction information if needed.

If I could leave no stars on this I definitely would. The way the food was presented in this café is absolutely horrendous. The food wasn’t even cooked as the toast was just normal bread and not even buttered!! Absolute disgrace of a place… if you don’t know how to cook don’t open a café! And the review which was below that you rudely replied to… I know this person well and I think it’s disgusting how you can talk to someone like that! Try and take some negative reviews aswell! No wonder the place is an absolute shambles!! Your staff are miserable and unfriendly, I also feel like the seating isn’t comfortable or set out how it should be.

On holiday in York so popped in here for lunch as it looked quant, the food was amazing and the staff were lovely. I'll be telling everyone back home to come here if they're ever in York, and I'll definitely come back when I'm next on my travels!

Well found this wonderful place, yesterday on my trip, around York. Wow, I decided to eat outside with it being such glorious weather. It it was a delightful lunch, the service was first class. I was served like it made me feel so special. High Recommend. 🏆

This place intrigued me because of the name. And that it had themed rooms. It's a quirky little place. Plus they had a snoozing pooch at the bottom of the stairs, always a bonus. I had a gin and tonic and a jacket potato with tuna - all delicious! My partner had chicken and bacon loaded fries and chocolate milkshake - also delicious! The staff were clearly very busy and it was quite a warm warm day, so added stress! But they were all happy and friendly. The bill came to about £24, fairly reasonable and we got to read lots of awesome quotes on the walls too!

Wonderful little themed cafe. The staff are friendly and make you feel welcome. We sat in the music room which is on the first floor up the spiral staircase. The film room is on the second floor, along with the toilets. Enjoyed the food very much. A great place if you are looking for somewhere to get lunch. There was a sweet little dog asleep there too.

Absolutely beautiful soup. I've never had cauliflower soup before but I'd love to have this again. The accompanying ciabata was the perfect match. The kids loved the extra special milkshakes with maltesers. I loved the quirkiness of the building and have enjoyed reading about its history since. Definitely a hidden gem 😊

Delicious food and coffee but the tight spiral stairs are challenging!

A sandwich shop which needs more than 30 minutes to rustle up a takeaway sandwich at lunch time with hardly any other customers inside. They probably turned the oven on after we placed the order.

Great gluten free options, I emailed a head and the chef responded in regards to my query for cross contamination. Took my celiac daughter and she really enjoyed it, no issues after either. Will definitely be returning!

Club sandwich is to die for. Banging efficient service. If I could give ten I would.

Been coming here a few times but felt like the service is going a bit downhill, usually like it but was approached with an unwelcoming and indirect manner after trying to be nice after a slight miscommunication foodwise, the coffees are nice here but the food isn’t worth the price
