I take black coffee and as it’s always a bit strong for me I ask for extra hot water The owner wanted to charge me for the extra hot water really? Shame as I’m local but won’t be returning

We stopped off at the Sandsfoot Café for a much-needed cuppa during a hike from Portland to Weymouth. The food here is superb and great value for money. I asked if anything on the menu was gluten-free, and was told that not only were several of the cakes gluten-free, but they could also make any of the sandwiches on the menu with gluten-free bread, just as I liked (take note M&S, Costa, et al - you do not even offer this). The outside seats were damp from a short shower; the man serving us ran out and proceeded to wipe our seats dry before we sat down, without us asking. The gardens are lovely and the coastal view is stunning.During our delicious cuppa and cakes, it started it started to rain lightly, the café owner reappeared and handed us, and everyone else sat around us, a large umbrella each.I cannot rate this place highly enough. The staff cannot do enough for you and everything is delicious. On a previous visit during the summer we even witnessed two dogs being served ice cream cones - 99's with a bonio biscuit in place of a chocolate flake.I know locals absolutely love this place - and it's plain to see why. Please don't ever change it.

I have lived in Weymouth for 5 years now and am a twice weekly vistor to Sandsfoot Castle via the Rodwell trail. I firsy went to the cafe in the grounds of the Castle late in the summer of 2009 gasping for a tea and a coffe for the missus. I stood at the hole of the cafe and one by one I caught eye contact with each of the five staff/people in there and not one of them acknowledged my existance. I joking said to the guy behind me "can you see me", but there was no reply. No, seriously I then said "can I have a tea n coffee please"....nothing. I then announced that they were the most ignorrant establishment I have ever visited, well surprisingly they heard that. Anyway if you are visiting Weymouth and like strolling, do go down the Rodwell trail, visit Sandfoot Castle (armed with flasks) and then go back to Weymouth via Old Castle Rd, Belle Vue Rd, Newton's Cove then over the Nothe Gardens and Fort and through the harbour ready for those Fish n Chips go on you deserve them!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

My regular visits to Weymouth, spanning 45 years, have brought me back time and time again to Sandsfoot Castle and gardens. I was delighted when a cafe was established some years back, even though on the site of the old public toilets next to the caravan park.Initially, it seemed the owners were keen for business and to offer a friendly service. This is now not the case. I have visited on three separate occasions this year so far. The service is frosty, non-committal and custom seems to be taken for granted. The cafe, with only outdoor seating, has outstanding sea views with no competition from any other vendor. The reception appears warmer if your a Weymouth resident or a hard core cyclist. During one of my visits I was served by the owner couple, who were still dressed in their sweaty cycling gear having just returned from a mammoth training session. Conversation was minimal and the well done bacon and Brie sandwich I ordered could have been revived by a decent vet, it was so undercooked. Having said that, the snacks I ordered of late were decent and tasty and the coffee is always good. I just wish the owners would appreciate that as a paying customer a friendly smile, being served in clothing other than used sporting regalia and attention to detail would bode them well.

Mixed review: A warm and friendly welcome, clean and tidy. Day one: breakfast was lovely, all appeared freshly cooked so it took a little longer, the food was nice and of great value. Feel like there was a whole can of beans for the 'beans on toast' and it was piping hot. The pot of tea was plentiful The 'coffee' milkshake was more like warm milk, not the best. Day two: ordered the thick shake this time - meant to be with ice cream and so thought that would make it cooler and tastier - wrong, it was the same as the previous visit with cream and sprinkles - not the best (if you want a nice thick iced coffee, visit the White Stones cafe). The food took a bit longer again as it was Sunday and busy. The mushroom on toast was cold but we were on a time crunch, so we couldn't send it back. The taste was nice, just cold and the black pudding was a bit on the rubbery side. Everyone else enjoyed theirs.
