Congratulations are in order, officially the worst Sunday dinner we’ve ever had. Clearly a powder mix gravy and the veg on offer was ‘leeks with a dash of cabbage’, the highlight though was the steak pie, soft to the touch shortcrust pastry and what can only be described as steak mush inside it, very bland indeed. No one finished their meal.

A really lovely restaurant when you walk in, however that’s where the praise ends! This was my second visit. The first time I had a meat pie and chips served with peas that last saw life in 2019. However every kitchen has an off day so yesterday I decided to pop for some lunch. Ordered Beef lasagna when it came I wasn’t sure what it was because it bore no resemblance to a lasagne in any way. More over it looked like a piece of ham that had been left out again from 2019. Tried it because well I paid for it, The best way to describe it is Rank. Totally devoid of flavour , moisture or indeed heat. Not to be rude I just asked for. Quiche in replacement. Which I got after someone had eyeballed me from the kitchen (very rude) a huge piece of quiche which was dry but edible. However the pastry would have cracked teeth. I asked if it was made in house to which the reply was yes. Well I’m here to tell you your chef wants some more training or the sack. Shocking food been sent out stick to salads and sandwiches if you can’t at least put out a decent plate of hot food. I wish I had taken a picture now! The staff serving were polite at least & I was offered a refund for the difference in price. But it’s just inexcusable of the kitchen.

Extremely disappointed in the service here! We stopped to have a cup of tea and cake with the children. Unfortunately one of the cake slices were rock hard and dry, completely inedible. I politely asked for a refund on that slice of cake (which was nearly £4) and they completely refused saying they didn't think anything was wrong with it. I was really shocked by the unprofessional service, I will not be returning!

Visited today with my 21yr old Son, coffee and a scone before we bought some garden plants. There was a fairly large queue and there was a young man and a lady on the tills. A second lady was preparing drinks. While I was second in the queue, the lady on the till began to carry a tray with 2 drinks across the cafe. The lady preparing drinks bellowed to her " bring that tray back, it's not our fault they can't carry the tray" people in the queue stared in disbelief. What an appalling attitude especially as a large proportion of their customers are fairly old. Whoever is in charge of this staff member needs to remind her who pays her wage...the customer!

I have never been disappointed when eating here. Good selection of non meat meals, the coffees are always well prepared. Love the griddled vegetarian breakfast and vegan curry. As always run by a talented qualified chef, who is very involved with the running of the cafe, no wonder it is so popular.

Really missed this excellent cafe & the staff during lockdown. We've never been disappointed with the food nor staff. The staff are really nice & helpful, all the Covid19 precautions being carried out by the staff perfectly, pity some of the customers don't follow their lead or the instructions clearly posted on the doors & inside the cafe. A reduced menu, but several vegetarian & a vegan main are available. Batista standard coffees are served, made by hand not coffee maker as with the other nearest garden centre.

Visited this lunch time with my mum and nephew, ordered two breakfasts and a kids meal. The lady at the counter was lovely and polite. We sat towards the back at first, but we moved as the there was a very cold breeze coming from the door they left wide open. The food came looking like it had been thrown on the plate, the “toast” was warm bread shoved on top of the beans so it was soggy. The sausages were hard and clearly been deep fried, the hash browns were hard and greasy from being deep fried, the bacon was basically raw with stringy fat on it, the mushrooms that way paid £1.25 extra for were also deep fried! The egg was snotty and the beans were the only thing that wasn’t deep fried!! The “grilled tomato” was raw (probably because they couldn’t deep fry it). Tried to eat it as I have been brought up to not waist my food, I only managed a few mouth fulls and the warm bread. The kids meal was fine, he enjoyed it. However, we will not be returning for the breakfast and a hot drink we paid ten ponds each for, had better breakfasts in greasy spoons. Very disappointing as it looks like a nice place to go eat.

We had our lunch here the other week. They are very Covid aware so that was good. We had the meat pie, which was nice but the chips( frozen I think) were swimming in gravy, not appealing at all. Also they only used the little cartons of milk, for the tea and coffee, why couldn’t they provide the milk in a jug? Overall a bit of a disappointment, not everyone likes chips covered in gravy. The bonus was the lovely gift shop, but the customers were not social distancing , not the garden centre’s fault obviously,

We had the mega breakfast, the service was quick and the food was hot. The sausages seemed to have a lot of herbs in them which I enjoyed but my wife and daughter never but I suppose that’s just personal preference. There was plenty of car parking spaces to get parked. Visited this cafe many times but maybe it was where we picked to sit this last time that made our visit not really spot on.We chose a table on the upper level overlooking the entrance to the cafe and just before the ramp to the upper level. My husband placed our order at the counter and came back to the table with our drinks. He had no sooner arrived than a waitress shouted up to me from the lower level that she had our food order and just ‘plonked’ the plates and cutlery on the top of the wall. I could not reach everything without going round the table to retrieve the cutlery. To say I was gobsmacked would be an understatement. I would expect this kind of service in a ‘greasy spoon’ but not here. There was also the issue of the table cleaning spray and cloth just being left on top of the wall - obviously ready for cleaning the tables but not conducive when you are eating a meal in an establishment. Not sure if the staff were just having a bad day or not being trained in the art of good customer service. Never had this kind of service before and very reluctant to go back any time soon.

This is our local garden centre and can't believe how much it's gone down hill since the refurb, the older staff are rude my 9 month pregnant wife was told to go and get her own pot of hot water refilled when she asked a member of staff if they could get it for her, on another occasion when asked if they could swap the adult breakfast sausages with the children's ones which do not contain herbs as she is allergic she was told it was at the chefs discretion. The staff are very slow mostly as they stand chatting leaving countless tables with dirty plates on them if you want a clean table you have to ask for it to be wiped down, our last trip I closed the fire door at least 6 times as staff were using it as an exit for the toilet and leaving it open to get back in inspite of people sat in coats eating because of the 4 degree outside temperature blowing in my wife commented to one member of staff added were sat near the door with an 8 month old baby in the breeze. The worst point was seeing children going into the kitchen in their outside clothes not something that should be happening in a food establishment I'm pretty sure they don't allow that when environment so health are inspecting

We stopped for a cuppa and cake after a bit of shopping in the garden centre it was well after lunch about 3pm so not too busy. However we couldn't find a table clear of dirty pots so resorted to clearing our own and cleaning our own table using the spray and cloth that had been left out. After seeing the dirty cloth used to clean the tables front of house I decided against eating cake prepared in a closed off kitchen. When we got seated with our drinks all the cups had dirty marks on due to not being washed up properly. At this point I wish I'd just gone home to have a cuppa. Such a shame as I see so many good reviews on here and the cafe looks like it could be a great place for a drink or lunch but this is my second visit here and both times I've left feeling disappointed due to general uncleanliness and disorganisation of staff. The staff who served us seemed friendly enough but the general impression I got is that the waiting staff were totally disengaged with their work environment - for instance if they are bringing dishes out of the kitchen why not take some dirty dishes back - it just felt like each staff member was waiting for the next to pick up the buck and do some work. I guess the staff are trying their best but are seriously lacking any management as to what hygiene and service standards need to be met when working in a cafe - else customers might as well go home to have a drink/food, as in hindsight I wish we had.

Following our visit to the Spring Garden Centre on Thursday 13th July I submitted a review. Today, the 18th, we visited Sandhills, so a similar review for you to compare, if you so wish! After a stroll around the site, we made our way to the restaurant and ordered 2 coffees and teacakes. The wife beat the waitress with the teacakes to our table by shorthead! They came with both a knife and napkin! The cost? About 2/3rds of the other review! Leave any conclusions up to you!

Called in for a lunch. Will go again. Loads of choice, plenty of parking and also a good place to have a walk around for presents, flowers, garden tools etc. If you are of a certain age you can join and have a reward scheme and have 10% off everything on a TUESDAY. I wondered why is was busy. Soon be decorations for Christmas, so could go out for lunch and shop for Xmas. The restaurant is huge, plenty of waitresses and only waited for a little while till it arrived. I had the most delicious meat pie and vegetables and my wife had a Gluten Free Chicken salad with GF bread. Not many places cater for celiac people. Plenty of choices too. Will definitely go again.

While ona regular visit to Sandhill Garden Centre we noticed a 'Special offer' on a patio garden table and chairs at a very reasonable price. The very helpfull young male assistant managed his Irish charm in such a way that my dear wife opened my wallet and the deal was concluded before I could say "How Much!"perhaps I should buy shares in this Business!Nearly forgot the prompt delivery which completed the very satisfactory service.

Visited for lunch just before the main rush. It was busy so waited approx 15 mins in the ordering queue. Got to the counter and tried to order chicken burger , cheese burger and pizza only to be told there wasn't any by a gruff member of the counter staff. No explanation at all . Could not think what else we might of had so left without ordering and went elsewhere. Why couldn't there have been a notice telling customers that items were not available ? Customer service training needed !

What a wonderful welcome we had here. Took my mum out for lunch, who has mobility problems and it was never a problem here. lots of chairs to use for anyone with walking problems. Great access to the restaurant and a very clean disabled toilet. Great food and plenty of choice for all. Snacks and light bites too.

Visited here with a good friend for lunch. They offer a good range of hot meals, many of which are gluten-free in addition to sandwiches and cakes. My friend ordered the soup of the day, which was curried parsnip, and she enjoyed this although the roll which accompanied it was quite small. The sandwich I had was lovely and came with a large salad and nacho crisps. The coffee was also good and there was a good selection of cakes and desserts on offer. We very much enjoyed our lunch and I wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

I have been an avid shopper at "Sandhill" garden centre for many years and today was my first experience in the resteraunt... I have to say how impressed I was... The menu has vastly improved and it's all at a really reasonable price...The renovation of the resteraunt area has really worked well, very well set out and ample seating space. Really really impressed and looking forward to my next visit... Well done Sandhill!

the restaurant is very clean and pleasant. We ordered 2 light snacks and a pot of tea.It took 40 minutes for our food to arrive, and as we had not been told that we needed to take ourtea with us we expected it to come with the food, but we were then told we had to que again for it by which time our food would have been cold. The food was okay but there are other places in the area that do it better.the garden center is lovely with a great choice of plants.

We have been visiting sandhill garden centre and restaurant for some time now and have always been impressed with the quality and quantity of the meals served. The food is always cooked fresh hence some times you may heave a short wait for your meal. The staff are always friendly and nice and go out of their way to help customers.Having read some of the nit picking comments from some trip advisor contributors these people do not appreciate what a great place Sand hill is. We recommend it to anyone.

We visit regularly. The food is lovely. Can't get food as good in pubs. Everything we've tried has been lovely. The main counter seems chaos at times. Maybe something could be done with that as the wait can be ages. With a little organisation I think it could be better. Doesn't stop us going though we probably visit weekly as my little boy loves it. Worth a visit.

Having wandered around the splendid garden centre we were ready for a cup of tea and joined quite a few other visitors in the welcoming cafe. The menu and the display cabinets contained a wide choice of home made options. Some fabulous looking quiche and amazing cake. We settled for the homemade steak pie and wasn't disappointed. You get a choice of chips n peas or mash n vege. The one thing I was surprised about was when asking for a bit more gravy to let me enjoy the tasty pastry I was charged an extra 25p!We washed our lunch down with a pot of tea each and went on our way to buy some of the Mrs Bridges range of chutneys and jams. Happy to recommend Sandhills for your garden and your stomach. Enjoy!

We went on a quiet Sunday afternoon out of season because the previous review said they allowed the dog to go inside. I asked if we could take the pup in and sit out of the way in the corner. The lady said no sorry I don’t allow dogs in at all.

We had lunch at The Potting Shed with family. This was a return visit, and we think it’s the best garden centre restaurant in the area. Soup was carrot and coriander (delicious, could’ve eaten more!), sandwiches were very fresh, and the haddock and chips were delicious. Restaurant is very clean and well laid out, tables not too close together. I’m sure we’ll be back!

On behalf of a relative who visited yesterday. Small fish, really greasy. Trading under Thompson’s name but nowhere near the quality. Cash only which is an inconvenience. Won’t be returning.
