San Carlo in Manchester

Absolutely incredible. Our first time here and will definitely be returning for many more visits.

First time here with friends really enjoyed the night , very busy place food good,

I came here for my dad's birthday on 28th December and unfortunately probably one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Despite having an early reservation (5.30) and arriving early, we didn't get seated until 5.50. I asked twice for updates on the table and received no apology or understanding from the hosts, just was ushered away. Upon seating we ordered quickly and when they brought the food they forgot my dad's steak. We chased it and they brought one out a few minutes later. They forgot the sauce so again, had to flag someone down to get the steak sauce. The steak was then pink when requested well done, but unfortunately as we had a show on after and the delay in seating- we didn't have time to do anything about it. We wanted deserts but again slow service meant we didn't have time (we had left 2 hours for dinner). Portions were also all quite small. We were sat near the kitchen so just heard the kitchen staff shouting for service continuously through the meal so atmosphere wasn't great. I know these reviews don't get monitored well based on replies but sharing so others know not to come here !

Not the cheapest but good atmosphere at 5pm on a Friday with decent amount of people in. All agreed food was excellent and very promptly served. Fresh salads and tasty mains. Nice wine selection, again a little pricy but nice. A good late afternoon meal enjoyed by my family.

I went to San Carlo for a work Christmas party, and have been a few times before with no issues. On this occasion though, within 10 minutes of walking through the door their waitress had chucked a menu across our table towards me and knocked over my glass of red wine which went all over me and the table (including a brand new fur and suede coat). One dismay and half arsed apology from her and then the manager came over to advise she'd change my parties table as there was red wine everywhere. Nothing was said to me about the face there was red wine all over me until I prompted her and she advised they'd cover my dry cleaning costs for the coat. I had to sit through an entire meal sodden and upset. I've had to go out of my way to sort the dry cleaning and collection and am still waiting on their accounts team to reimburse me. The email address they seem to throw out 'Guest relations' has not been helpful, poor customer service with scripted and unhelpful responses. I phoned the restaurant to speak to a manager but was told they were 'too busy and also 'too busy' to phone me back. Similarly, I asked the nameless Guest Relations email to phone me to discuss the service and my experience but they have failed to do so and have send me a scripted email response saying they'll chase up their accounts team on paying me the measly cost of the dry cleaning. Up there with the worst customer service I've experienced.

Call in today with my family there was 5 of us with they sat us on a table which was a joke way to small then the food came the starters which was tasteless I ordered a stake which 70 percent was fat in my honesty appinyon I think the place is over priced and below average food so will never be going back My name is Alan and the table was booked for new year's day at 2 pm not only was the table small the staff must of bumped my chair well over 15 times bit of a joke

food is decent at best, except the pizza which imo was pretty good. service is extremely poor, waiter was stacking up the plates right in-front of me. absolutely appalled. 2 of us also had chipped plates. wasn’t able to get any attention asking for the bill, had to walk towards the reception before we got any attention.

Lovely drinks and atmosphere. Seating is a bit cramped in places. Food and service wise was mixed. Focaccia with truffle isn't quite what we expected - was more like your average cheesy garlic bread with some slices of truffle instead of focaccia. The truffle ravioli was incredible and is highly recommended. The Zitoni Toscanini was a bit of a letdown and felt like something you could easily rustle up at home. Tiramisu was again, amazing and the creme brulé was also lovely, however the waiter forgot this or the kitchen didn't make it so had to wait longer for 1 dessert to come whoever we received no apology for this and the dessert was just thrown down. The main waiter we had (young, slicked back hair) was lovely and attentive but the other waiter was not. An older waiter also almost threw a drink over my partner by stopping suddenly and backing up, causing someone else to almost knock into him

Was alright. Service was pretty rubbish. Leeds branch is a lot better. Food was lovely as it should be but won’t be going back.

We used to visit here regularly for birthday celebrations and special occasions. We recently had friends fly to Manchester to visit us and we decided to visit our favourite restaurant San Carlo. Before we visited I had called up to ensure they had vegan options as both our friends were vegans. They confirmed they had multiple options so we travelled there. Upon arriving the waiter told us that they did not know if they had any vegan options and would find someone that does. Then another person came to our table and insisted that our vegan friends tried their seafood dishes. We had to explain that vegan and vegetarian are two different things and they do not eat seafood. The person started to be rude towards my friends and said maybe they could just eat a vegetarian pizza then. This was extremely embarrassing for us as we had highly recommended this place and was really let down. It should be standard to know what items on your menu are vegan or at least explain over the phone that you don’t offer it so we don’t make the journey.

It's the 1st time we have been but the staff and food were excellent, and at some point we shall go again

Just visited San Carlo, booked for 4.15pm Friday. Not impressed. Food ok, definitely had better. Not one to leave negative reviews but when you're visiting a restaurant with a reputation and it's a special treat, I'd save my money and go elsewhere. Starters prawns in garlic and my partner had mozzarella. Mains quattro staggioni pizza, ribeye steak with fries and garlic butter. Dessert almond and chocolate cake, San Carlo ice cream with hot chocolate and biscuit. Desserts were a let down, sounded better than what came. Slow for staff to bring starters and drinks. I had to eat my prawns as they were barely warm to begin with and as I finished my partner's starter came. Ages to clear starter plates, so ages for the main meal to come. Staff were definitely too busy to provide service. Never asked if we wanted any more drinks. Always seemed preoccupied when we asked for anything. Such as dessert menu or bill. Had to ask a few people. Definitely not the only agitated customers. Tables all around waiting for orders to be taken, complaints of food taking too long.

Had a beautiful meal in San carlo Manchester.. beautiful food and great service..extremely well looked after by gheorge who was brilliant

A great night with our lively family from Dublin. It was Claires birthday and we had a fantastic night. George really looked afterous and had a great sense of humour. Sn Carlos was not open when I left Manchestet to join 5he Army. But would definately cone back

We waited 1h for the food to come out on a Monday. Food was very hit or miss. Truffle pizza was extremely good, chicken alfredo and seafood pasta was not. Is it worth the price? No. Would I go back again? Maybe, but just for that truffle pizza. Nothing more.

Amazing food, nice wine, ok service, distrusting bathrooms

I’d written to San Carlo when I made our booking to explain that my husband had suffered a stroke (he is now severely disabled) and to request a booth near the front of the restaurant as this would be helpful for his mobility challenges. We were told when we arrived that we only had a few minutes to have a drink at the bar although we were 10 minutes early for our table. I tried to get a round of drinks for this very special family occasion but none of the bar staff even made eye contact with me. Then we were told we had to go to our table or else we were going to lose it. We were ushered to a table in the middle of the room at the back of the restaurant. When I explained that I had specifically asked for a booth near the front of the restaurant I was told that requests cannot always be accommodated. This was more than a little sad situation since my husband was struggling to get across the floor and he struggles to hear and to communicate so this would have been no fun at all for him. The staff did find us a booth but there was no apology. In fact their attitude made me feel uncomfortable. It spoiled our night and after many happy times in San Carlo, including holding our wedding party there, I don’t think we will go back.

We ordered mussels with a bread but the bread is totally burnt. Staff attitude is not nice at all. We have been to this restaurant before, but the portion and taste of this dish is completely different this time. It’s is very spicy, very little portion and very little sauce. The picture we attach is the additional bread they bring over. The tables are packed and we are sitting very close to the next table.

We visited last week with family for a pre theatre lunch. I was most disappointed by the reception staff , we arrived earlier than our booking only to be told to go away and come back as the bar wasn’t open , there was no offer to sit and wait . When we returned the greeting was equally unfriendly . We were left waiting for some time before anyone asked if we would like a drink , staff were too busy talking amongst themselves. We were left with our coats bundled on seats and had to ask if there was a cloakroom for them . The food order was eventually taken however there was no follow up regarding extra drinks / was everything ok , we had to ask each time and each time we were referred to another waiter to assist us . On a positive note the food was good but is definitely being let down by front of house staff. Such a different experience from the Leeds San Carlos . I would definitely not recommend or return .

Can't fault the food nor the venue but you can argue that when it comes to feeding the 5000 - the place is huge - there's a tendency to take your eye off the ball. Service was too intense, if that makes sense. Staff almost waiting to pounce to take your plate away and that's what happened. Arguably slightly overpriced.

Food is average. Service is non existent or friendly when it's busy (visited 21st December). Then they enforce 15% service charge on the cheque without asking. When you compare to the London or Dubai equivalents (Signor Sassi) this establishment lets the brand down massively.

Ordered the main course lasagne (£18). See the pic for portion size. The fork is for perspective. The waiter confirmed it was a main course portion……with a straight face.

Overhyped and far from decent. We visited for my friend's birthday this Sunday. The place was full. Our table wasn't ready, so we needed to wait by the bar. When we finally sat down, the staff was acting pretentious and condescending, making me feel uncomfortable. They couldn't understand how could we ask for starters to be served together with mains. The food arrived literally 5 minutes after we ordered, which was very suspicious. I understand efficiency, but this just shouted microwaved meal. It was bearable, but as native Italian, my partner described it as 'fast food Italian'. We paid £120 for two pasta mains, a starter, a bottle of water, and 3 glasses of wine, which I find absolutely disgusting. They never brought my friend's birthday cake, and we couldn't even catch anyone to ask about it as they were all running frantically. I really don't understand the popularity of this place. To me, it was a big disappointment.

Went for a work Xmas meal , place looks lovely. Staff were prompt with orders of food and drink . Food was poor quality , my colleagues pastas were basic and overly salted and my scallops were unpleasant and overpowered by soggy breadcrumbs . A disappointing experience

I had a phone call to book a table for 5 , the female stuff picked up my phone call, I said can I have a table for 5 on Christmas Eve, she was so aggressive and arrogant, and hanged up the phone. Excuse me?????Is this your attitude towards the guest????

We had a lovely dinner food was delicious! Our server Misha was fantastic, very friendly. Good value for money. We will be back.

Don't go here if you are looking for quality fresh seafood! I had a bland seafood experience, with mushy old prawns/langoustine, overcooked mussels and a watery bland 'sauce'( when it stated it came in garlic butter). Also it said scallops(plural) but I got one. Table are too close together, packed like sardines... sardines this restaurant would undoubtedly cook bad!

Thank you for a lovely evening for my birthday. We arrived late due to the traffic. However staff ensured we still had a table and looked after us. The food was amazing as was the service. We will definitely be back :)

What can I say, what can I do with service and food for a very reasonable price that is worth a try. I took the Marghita pizza and looked for it. Pasta with shrimp and chicken, God willing, delicious taste.

Incredible food!! I cannot stop thinking about the beef ragu - slow cooked, melt in the mouth beef and it’s all I’ve been craving since! Wonderful evening, and great atmosphere

So me and my Wife were in Town for the Christmas markets and had eaten at Annies restaurant off St Anne's square and as we headed down King Street onto Deansgate we saw San Carlo so decided to head in for a drink. So we arrived and the restaurant was extremely busy but we were seated in the bar, i ordered an Aperol Spritz for my wife and I ordered a bottle of Peroni Gran Riserva which came to £20, i paid card. I have eaten at San Carlo in the past with my Mum and obviously San Carlo has an amazing reputation for food, drink, service and ambience and is a well deserved reputation that has seen it become a celeb haunt for years and years. Food is Italian and has an amazing menu, Service is absolutely top draw, Drinks menu is long with everything from beers, wine, cocktails, mocktails, Spirits, champagne 🍾 etc. Restaurant food and drink is expensive but it is so worth it trust me, The food, The drink, The Service, The atmosphere etc are all 5☆. Overpriced and terrible service. There was no attention on the table just felt left I asked for a drink it never arrived so went to the bar where I was ignored so back at the table eventually got a drink. Small portions. The restaurant is too noisy and the lights kept dimming on and off which was frustrating.

We hadn’t pre booked. We were asked to wait 20/30 mins. Finally seated after an hour. Bruschetta very uneventful. I ate at Piccolinos recently and fell in love with how tasty and simple it was. It’s just simple at San carlo. I ordered a Pizza as I thought what else could go wrong. It was just about cooked, the topping mainly in the middle and it had a hard lump of plastic in it !!! My Partners Lamb was very rare to say the least, which wasn’t what was ordered. They did take the pizza off the bill and gave us a glass of wine but it’s too little too late. I just wanted a nice experience.

Very poor food and service, visited on ,29 Nov 24 . I felt rushed and poor quality food I sent my pasta back twice,average at best. However charging top end money for medium Italian food, plus the service personal want a great tip for delivering the mediocre food to your table. Plenty other places to go,I feel the visit was very much below expectation.

Waiter tried upselling wine, then my red wine was put in an ice bucket. My guests were asked if they wanted Parmesan on their fish dish. Food was good but serving staff had little training.

We went for my friends birthday last night and the service and attention was great! Zivo was really lovely as well!!!

We went for a birthday dinner, it was 12 of us and everyone enjoyed it! The food was so quick to come and so good! We even got some profiteroles for the birthday girls :) Drinks were delicious! The whole team was amazing throughout the meal! Special thanks to our server Giovanna who really made us feel amazing and taken care of, she’s a real hospitality star!

really disappointing experience. I dined here for dinner with my partner. First of all we were sat right by where the dishes come out which I don’t mind because we could hear all the yelling and shouting, and food was basically being dished up next to me and dirty plates and napkins left right next to my head. This isn’t the type of setting that I’d expect from san carlo but nevertheless we tried to keep a positive attitude. We were asked about dietary requirements, my partner informed them he was vegan and no care was taken to explain what menu dishes were vegan so we just had to figure it out. We were then rushed into ordering. The moment that ruined this meal was the factI ordered oysters that whilst were perfectly presented seemed to be spoiled. I had three out of 6 and noticed they were dry and whether that was because the liquid was spilt in the presenting process or spoiled I wasn’t sure. I raised this to a waitress and she went off and I can hear everything that happens at the counter where the dishes come and go and she didn’t mention it. Another waitress came over and asked me what was wrong and she tried to assure me they were fresh but I explained how I’d never been served oysters like that and it was like she was arguing with me or didn’t understand eventually another waiter came over and agreed that that wasn’t normal and then said he can get me some more or take them off the bill. He apologised but I’d already had half and seemed very calm about the fact that I’d been served potentially bad oysters. The whole process of having to talk to three different staff about it, 2 of which didn’t care at a restaurant of this establishment was shocking and totally ruined the experiences. I’ve been served proper oysters at so many better restaurants in Manchester’s. On top of that when the oysters were taken away I could hear the wait staff arguing about it right next to me as that’s where the dishes were coming in and out of it The main courses were okay but nothing amazing I had the seafood spaghetti which was mediocre. I also ordered truffle fries and for served 2 French fries and I tried to politely and kindly explain to the waiter I didn’t order this and he was so rude about it. Overall the ambience for the rest of restaurant is gorgeous and very Italian-like but the servers are rushed and cold and where we were sat was appalling. I’m really disappointed and wouldn’t recommend this restaurant.

Food was tasty enough and fairly authentic Service however was lacking Lots of what appeared to be senior waiters who hovered about not really making a difference and tending to what was probably regular customers 45 minute wait for pizza and pasta Biggest complaint though was the number of tables squeezed in means you can’t really move for seats next to you and the noise level stops any conversation apart from listening to the table either side Left after a main as not a comfortable experience at all

Fabulous restaurant! All staff were so lovely, for the warm welcome and throughout, nothing was too much trouble. Food was simply out of this world and wouldn’t hesitate to return next time we’re in Town.

My family had our last fine dining in Manchester, the food was wonderful! I can tell why this place is popular in many dining app and Google map. The services and atmosphere were welcoming and lively, I was on my wheelchair, the employees were very friendly and helpful to bring us to our table from outside of the restaurant. I recommended every dishes from our order, and their wine list looks awesome! Hopefully I have chance to come again in the future.

I recently dined at San Carlo, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish! The atmosphere was vibrant yet elegant, creating the perfect setting for an enjoyable evening. Every detail, from the tasteful decor to the warm lighting, added to the authentic Italian ambiance. The service was absolutely top-notch. Ana, our server, made the experience even more memorable—she was attentive, friendly, and had excellent knowledge of the menu, offering great recommendations. She took wonderful care of our group, making sure everything was perfect throughout the meal. The food was exceptional, with fresh, flavorful ingredients and dishes that transported us straight to Italy. From the rich pasta to the perfectly cooked seafood, everything was expertly prepared. San Carlo truly sets the bar high for Italian cuisine. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a special dining experience!

As a regular at San Carlo, I can’t say enough good things about it! Whether it’s a quick drink, a great meal, or lunch, San Carlo is perfect every time and for any occasion. The bar staff are always fantastic, making us feel right at home, and Ahmed, the manager, is incredibly welcoming. It’s my go-to spot for a lovely experience, every single visit!

Tasty dishes... that's why it's so full. Very good... really an unusual flavor. Cool atmosphere but crowded and very hot. Good wines, but not quite at the right temperature Magnificent desserts.

The food was AMAZING and thanks to mr zico he suggested the best foods for us and literally all of them were fantastic....

We had dinner in Mid October. They have an extensive menu and wine list. While the service was efficient it was not warm nor inviting. We ordered a first course and when finished, then ordered our main course. The main arrived in literally three minutes…. a bit rushed. Food quality was good, with over favor and presentation OK.

I spent a long weekend in Manchester and found myself looking up good Italian restaurants so I could treat myself to a lovely lunch and the moment I saw there was a San Carlo I knew I had to book it! I have eaten at San Carlo in Liverpool a few years ago and it was perfection, I went to San Carlo in London and sadly had an awful experience there but I had no concerns in going to San Carlo in Manchester and this lunch DID NOT disappoint at all and when they say it's an award winning restaurant you best believe it because everything is perfection!. I do have a lot of food allergies and after what happened in London, I wanted to check if they were allergy friendly and they stated they were but they weren't joking about that because when I arrived for lunch, before I even sat down they asked me about any food allergies something I truly appreciated and normally I am quite anxious eating out because of having so many allergies but I had no worries or concerns eating here. For a starter I ordered the olives which were marinated and I am sure they had orange zest on something I haven't had before but the combination worked so perfectly and they were THE BEST olives I have ever eaten and then for a main course I had spaghetti bolognaise which was just perfection. I know there are many bad reviews on here about this restaurant however I am failing to see why because the service was 5 star, the food was as usual incredible and I was in no hurry to eat and leave the restaurant so a bit slower service didn't phase me at all and actually I enjoyed it because nothing was rushed and it gave me a bit of time to rest prior to my main course coming out! 10/10 and I cannot recommend this restaurant any higher because it really is a lovely restaurant with the most incredible food and if your looking for authentic Italian food just go to San Carlo it will NOT disappoint!.

It cant be that bad i hear you say it was. The service was just poor! We were a large group of more than 10 celebrating a friends special birthday. Wrong dishes came, extra food item came out which we didnt order and we were scolded when we told them it was incorrect. I asked for salad as a main course told we didnt do it. Than asked what does mc mean then. Then told they changed the menu so he didnt realise. I had taken everyone order before hand and written down. I was told he was Spanish and doesnt understand Italian. Asked for a picture of the group told not in a nice way. He was too busy! Given a 20 minute countdown to exit the table they came over ever 5 mins as a reminder. Time to pay settling the bill he had the card reader rolling his eyes and then telling people well i dont know how much you want to pay! Poor attitude and rubbish behaviour from staff. They dont cater for large groups so dont bother. We wont be coming back.

Visited San Carlo yesterday lunchtime. The staff were so lovely except for one 'gentleman' he was rude and very 'off' with all the customers. This is not acceptable and if I could have spoken to managers I would have reported him whilst he was serving. Food was good...not sure if I will revisit.

We have been to San Carlos aa a family and with friends for over 10 years now. I'd booked a table for 6pm on Saturday October 12th. My brother had flown in from Florida and specifically asked for dinner at San Carlos because previously we have had: Excellent service Delicious food We were seated promptly. We had to wave down waiters to get drinks. The service was incredibly slow! Not one waiter was assigned to us so as we kept stopping waiters it become ridiculous. My brother and his wife couldn't eat their main courses..the main courses took ages to come. Very very disappointed on what should have been a real celebration. You did bring some profiteroles and sang Happy Birthday. I suggest you were under staffed but waiting so long for food is unacceptable. The whole evening was just waiting for waiters...drinks...food. How can you restore our faith in San Carlos?

On arrival shown table didn't take anyone's coats, sat for 15 minutes and then had to ask a waiter if we could order some drinks! Lovely venue, starts delicious, mains okay but that's probably down to personal, for me it was the service, would I revisit yes but only if it was for someone's special occasion

Should get 0 for service absolutely horrendous place, crammed tables and waiters shouting over eachother across tables, so many better places in Manchester now

We were a small group and had a very unpleasant experience with the staff from beginning to end. They spoke down to us at every opportunity and berated my friend after she made a mistake with her order. We were made to feel like second class citizens and it just left us all with a bitter taste in our mouths.

Sat down and the waiter immediately asked if we wanted to move somewhere quieter in the restaurant, he was so attentive without being pushy. The food, as always, was incredible. Arancini with truffle and garlic sauce were incredible, porcini ravioli were so earthy and delicious and the duck ragu with papperdelle blew my mind. Thank you so much to all the staff for an amazing visit. Xxx

We went there for a business dinner last night and the food was delicious! You have to try Carpaccio di Manzo as a recommendation. The service was really good and fast considering we were a group of 13 people. They were paying attention to every detail. Totally recommended.

Love coming to San Carlo. Food was perfect and was the perfect place to meet friends in a great setting. Our friend had an allergy and everything was communicated really well from management to help making a choice in terms of food easier for her. Everyone enjoyed!

Delicious! We loved it. Great experience. Service was top tier. Oysters were served in a fabulous presentation. The pasta was delicious too a little on the spicy time so next time I would ask for it to be a little more milk. We both enjoyed the dessert as well. This is one of the best if not the best Italian spots in Manchester

As usual rammed but something has changed food not the same tasteless …. Is this an Italian these days or Asian restaurant. Not being racist but has a whole different vibe and clientele . Food very very average

Outstanding food, it really was. The presentation, the taste, and the portions are all just perfect. Great atmosphere, even though it was busy, you could still hear yourself. A special mention goes to Bardhi who looked after us the whole night with excellent service 🙌🏽

One of the best meals I’ve ever had, from the food to the service - it was all exceptional. There was one staff member in particular that went above and beyond to ensure my awkward dietary requirements were met by the kitchen staff. I didn’t catch his name, but I couldn’t thank him enough for being so attentive! The only downside is how busy the place is, but I totally understand why it is! The tomahawk was beautiful - easily the best we’ve ever had.. and we’ve had some damn good steaks. Thank you to all your staff for making the evening so special! <3

Near perfect experience. If I had to find one thing to improve, it would probably be the lighting - it was a bit bright - but it did not detract from a first class occasion.

The atmosphere was amazing. The staff couldn't be nicer and went out of their way for us. Everyone's food was incredible. Our main member of staff was Zico who made sure my daughter had the best experience possible for her birthday. Thank you

The staff are friendly and accommodating. The food is delicious making this restaurant a favourite of ours to visit every time we are in Manchester .I would just like to say that this time we were very well looked after by staff George and Bardi. Visited the other night for my friend’s birthday. Table of 11, obviously a large party so i can understand it can be harder to serve larger groups of people. However the service was just not there, it was as if they were annoyed we were there, handed around a piece of paper asking us to cross off what we had pre ordered. The waiter was lovely, the manager was not. To top it off at the end we requested to split the bill, which they sighed at (somewhat understandable), then proceeded to accidentally charge my friend for the entire bill and told her she would receive a refund in a week. Food was ok.

Absolutely unbelievable, best restaurant I’ve eaten at in my year of living in Manchester. The Sirloin steak was cooked to perfection and the side of fries were also amazing. Service was top notch, fast and very efficient. Would definitely eat here again!

Two of us visited San Carlo, one of us Gluten Free. Greet atmosphere (especially for Tuesday evening) and quick service despite the number of customers. I ordered Mussels followed by Salmon pasta which were both delicious. However my wife GF choices were terrible. They said “order what you like” and we can modify, but the reality was that all of her first four choices for mains could not be adapted (what is the chef thinking? Or is the food pre-cooked?). She eventually ordered a Dove Sole which came dry, no sauce just a fish on a plate. Really really poor. Deserts got even worse. No desert available for GF at all apart from ice cream ( which isn’t a desert it’s an accomplishment(. So disappointing given they serve gf pizza and pasta so they are aware of the issue.
