Lovely spot right by the river. Pub chain food. Beer kept well.

Had a really lovely evening here tonight. Family of four... all our dishes were delicious, the steak pie was to die for and the pizzas demolished quickly. The staff were super friendly and kind, and service exceptional. A great atmosphere throughout. Highly recommended!

Great service. Didn’t book, but we got a table. Ordered at the bar, and didn’t have to wait long for the food to come out. All the staff seemed happy and customer service was great.

We had a lovely late lunch here, with a beautiful table looking out onto the river. All the staff were lovely, especially Crystal! Hopefully we will be back soon!

Great location by the Quayside. Relaxed friendly atmosphere with Sky Sports for those who like sport. Excellent service by Crystal who was relatively new to waitressing. She was polite and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner with friends and the steak was fabulous. Delicious cheesecake too. Really enjoyed our dinner to celebrate a big birthday. We will return.

Lovely riverside pub. Great food with interesting flavours - the fish and chips got top marks. Really good service from Crystal, who was polite and helpful. It was a quiet weekday lunchtime so can't comment too much on the atmosphere but it worked for us at that time of day.

Dropped in for lunch in a group of 6. Had incredibly welcoming and accommodating staff, and the food was really great. All the staff were super helpful, but especially Louie really helped us out. It has a great atmosphere, and nice selection of food and drink. Good beers too!

Visited recently with my wife and granddaughter. We all enjoyed our meals, the food was very tasty and the portions were generous. I had the fish and chips and the batter was delicious. The staff as always were friendly and attentive. Good time had by all and we will be visiting again soon.

What a terrific place! A very stylish and wonderfully converted warehouse in quite a lovely location on the quay. I love the atmosphere it has, very comfortable with super friendly, welcoming staff and excellent service. The menu was just the right balance for choice, well priced, good size portions done just right. Really enjoyed this place, will definitely come again and would totally recommend it!

It's essentially a Wetherspoons style food, in a nice part of town. Sunday roast was served cold for everyone and wasn't anything to write home about, although the beef brisket part was nice. Would've be nicer if it was above room temperature

What a great place for my birthday meal, the staff were lovely from the second we walked in, shown straight to our pre-booked table, the food was delicious and Louis was very attentive, making sure we were looked after, he did a fab job. Will definitely return again.

Lovely family dinner at the Samuel Jones. Service was top notch from Louis - he was attentive all night, had a cracking sense of humour and had great energy. The food was great, everything came out in a timely manner and all together. Our steaks were cooked exactly as requested, the pizzas were huge and everything tasted amazing. No one left hungry! We also had a baby in the party and were seated on a lovely table with enough room for the pram to stay close which was really helpful. Definately would come again and an absolute must visit for those heading down the Quay.

This is a lovely place for drinks by the quay and the staff, especially Lewy were attentive and friendly. Furthermore, the food's quite nice and the place has a very pleasant atmosphere with a lot of character to the decor. I would definitely visit again.

A pleasant setting on the balcony overlooking the quay. A nice quiet atmosphere for lunch in the sun. Staff were polite and friendly. However, the cost of a lunch meal was bordering on very expensive and then the portion size exasperated this feeling - Very small portions for the cost. Not once were we asked how our meal was and no care was given about how our visit was. In short average meal and a high end price and very small portions. We won't be back again and will go elsewhere in the future.

Come into Exeter for the first time and come to Samuel Jones. Staff are very friendly. Food was amazing. Cara and Jess were very helpful and bar staff are very helpful too.

We had a wonderful lunch here. The chicken burgers were massive. Everything was well cooked and very pleasant surroundings. Staff were lovely.

Been here on multiple occasions to have both food and drinks or just drinks. Very clean and service is always amazing. They show a decent range of sports so it is a great place to go for a couple of pints on the weekend.

I think the staff discriminates against me, perhaps against my ethnicity. Came in the pub, wasn't crowded at all. The staff didn't pay any attention that I had to come to the bar to ask for the menu. The waitress even asked me to bring the cutlery to my table, which I refused, then she brought it to my table. On the way out, attempted to say goodbye and thank you as general courtesy, no one bothered (the pub has only a few customers and wasn't crowded at all). I felt invisible being there. Overall, very bad experience.

I visited the Samuel Jones with my daughter for a bit of lunch. It was my first visit and I was very impressed with the decor and layout of the pub/ restaurant. It was also immaculately clean. We were greeted by Matt who was very polite, friendly and professional. The food was stunning too. We both had the chicken wrap with a couple of side dishes to share. It was very well presented. Matt also served our food and nothing was too much trouble, a credit to the establishment. The other staff on duty were friendly too. I will not hesitate to visit again.

Only gave the food 3 as thete wzs no Fish n chips or Cra. Cakes. LEWY was a star, he is a credit to the place, lovely friendlyvand cheerful x. Would come again

Lovely looking restaurant/bar however that's where it ends. Been round the area a couple of times so thought we'd give this place a go. The food is very expensive so was expecting something pretty good however it was quite the opposite. I had hummus for a starter and it was like a solid lump of old plaster. Had no taste and was so thick I was unable to eat it. My main was not much better and my friend had the fish and chips which he couldn't e en eat. He said it was probably the worst food he'd ever eaten. I told the manager how bad it was and she didn't care at all. She never offered anything to make up for it but did ho back into the kitchen to tell the cooks. We know this because they came out to the bar and began staring at us and then we heard them say (we thought it was them!!). The sorry state of the food and service is no doubt the reason the place was empty yet the neighbour restaurant was busy!! Avoid

Food is always good - nice variety, reasonably priced and delicious. Decent variety on tap, especially beer/lager. Not as much choice with cider as they used to have, but still 5+ Thatchers options. Service was hit or miss: info in special request box on booking ignored, waitress was very accommodating in rectifying the situation for which we were thankful, but then stood 10ft away (within earshot) talking about us & laughing with other members of staff.

Visited lunchtime midweek. Lovely riverside setting with a large wraparound outdoor eating area. Inside had plush decor with a rustic feel, which was extremely pleasant. The service was very friendly and the food was good. Would highly recommend a visit and will definitely return when we are next in Exeter.

Extremely slow service in a less than half-full dining area, including terraces. The “large” size portion was very meagre. I can’t imagine how small the smaller version was. Very expensive for the amount of food served. The waitress made no effort to understand a slight foreign accent: “Half a dry cider” shouldn’t be THAT difficult to decipher! I’m sure many foreign tourist come through Exeter, so a keener ear would be an asset. Manager(s), please ensure your waiting staff are capable of using full phrases in English. “Enjoy” is not what a customer expects (enjoy what, exactly?). Try “Enjoy your meal” or the customary “Bon appétit”. It’s not so taxing, is it?

We had to wait 45 min for a pizza and a salad which were both small and average quality.

Came to Samuel Jones for a birthday meal. The food was great with very little wait time. Service was friendly and helpful (especially Alfie). Overall, we had a lovely time and will definitely be back soon!

We had an amazing meal here. Our food was great and so was our service. Alfred was especially amazing he swiftly removed the plates from the table as we finished and also took a photo for us all. He also took a photo of him self( THIS WAS VERY FUNNY)

Great recommendations, really well priced, and great service - John in particular was great!!

We came here as a celebration dinner for my husbands birthday. Despite booking, when we arrived we were told that it would be a 30 mins wait for food. We both ordered the ribs for main. When these came out, my husbands were warm but mine were really cold. We sent these back, and you could tell that they just re-heated them instead of making fresh as the single rib that was on the side and the chips below came back cold and it was only the ribs which were heated back through. Further, my husband had pretty much finished by the time mine came back out. This was extremely disappointing. They did remove the wine from the bill, but really the replacement meal should have been freshly made, not just reheated a portion of it. We won't be rushing back.

We went for a celebratory lunch, and I booked Samuel Jones as we'd historically had a lovely experience. Sadly, this visit was comparatively disappointing. The gluten-free options were lacking, and they didn't have any gluten-free baguettes in. The kitchen did try to accommodate using gluten-free burger buns though, and she was largely happy. Then there was no mackerel for the salad I ordered. They offered me chicken instead, which I accepted, but when it came out, the meat was quite dry, and the croutons felt stale, which I did mention to the server but no solution was offered. At nearly £17 I was expecting something a little more than a bit of chicken on some dressed leaves. Other diners in our group commented that their pies were cold, despite one being burnt on the top, but they didn't want to make a fuss and we were all very hungry. It was just a bit disappointing, as we'd taken people there off the back of previously very good experiences, and now we probably won't look to visit again. Credit to the server, he was very polite and attentive, but by their own admission, they probably didn't have enough staff in the kitchen for the number of guests in the restaurant, and it showed.

We’re frequent visitors to Samuel Jones and on this occasion, we popped in for a drink but spontaneously fancied a snack. Jessica could not have dove more to make us feel welcome and she is a credit to St Austell Brewery. Her cheerful and friendly demeanour and her willingness to go out of her way to provide us with some food after the kitchen had closed was a breath of fresh air. Sadly, the hospitality trade in the UK has too few examples of staff like Jessica. On a less positive note, we were confused by the decision to remove the cheese board as a dessert option on the menu and whoever made that decision, please reconsider when you next review the menu. It’s another example of a gradual deterioration in the food offer in Samuel Jones. At one time, there was a selection of steaks and grills that compared well with Miller & Carter. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with the quality, the selection of dishes is uninspiring and there’s nothing that sets this pub apart from the pack. It’s a shame really. We enjoyed the concept when it first opened. Thank you though. We will be back.

First time in Exeter and we were told the Quay was the place to be. Our server Ella Mae, was pleasant and patiently talking us through the local beer options. Would recommend the mussels.

Sadly my daughter was disappointed with her meal, a mackerel salad, more iceberg lettuce than anything else!

Nice place, nice staff poor sunday roast. Tough brisket, unpleasant carrots cooked in a strange perfume like herb.

I was here for work and needed a nice place to eat and found this place by chance. The server, John, was great! Very quick and very polite. The food was excellent and came out very quickly, but it was extremely fresh. I will definitely eat here again if I am ever in the area.

Genuinely my favourite place in all of Exeter. Lovely atmosphere and amazing amazing service. The lady that looked after us all evening was exceptional, especially when we had a group of 7 who were all mildly fussy! Brilliant time and really enjoyed ourselves, we will be back. Food was also out of this world incredible. Thank you for an amazing evening.

Very friendly and dogs welcomed. Our dog loves the free dog biscuits whilst we have our coffee after a long walk.

Basic food, nothing to write home about and on the expensive side. Drinks prices on the high side as expected from St Austell brewery sites.

Visited with my mum a few weeks ago. The venue itself is lovely and in a great setting but we were so disappointed with the service. Admittedly, we visited late afternoon on a Saturday so I assume they’d had a busy lunch but when we visited it was quiet. Firstly, we waited but nobody greeted us at the door and thus we made the decision to head to the bar and ask whether we could have a table. We then waited at the bar whilst several members of staff moved around (putting glasses away and chatting amongst themselves) for several minutes before anybody acknowledged us. Eventually, I ordered drinks and was then told the card machines weren’t working (not their fault and luckily we had some cash on us). We were advised to sit down and the coffee would be brought over to us and where we then waited for another ten to fifteen minutes for my mum’s coffee, before I decided to approach the bar as we wanted to order some food anyway. I then found the coffee we had been waiting for sitting on the bar unattended and asked if I could take it over - confusion ensued as nobody knew where the coffee was supposed to go and they couldn’t find the ticket or the person who had asked for the coffee to be made. Eventually I ordered food and managed to claim the coffee. We then received half of our order (which was lovely - thanks to the kitchen!) and thought the remainder must be on its way and decided to wait patiently. Nobody came to collect our plates or check on our food and as time passed I figured that there must have been another confusion. I approached the bar to request a refund as we were short of time to then be told that as half of our food was “nibbles” and half was “sides” it hadn’t been communicated that we wanted the food to arrive together, as opposed to in starters and mains. They did give me a refund without qualm and apologised for the mix up. I have been a General Manager in hospitality venues for nearly ten years myself and empathise but the staff here need both training and management. Seemingly few know how to make coffee, they don’t seem to know the products that they’re selling, they don’t greet their customers and whilst all of this was going on we witnessed several members of staff milling about on their phones or chatting amongst themselves. There were plenty of staff members working at the time (I would argue too many) but nobody really seemed to know what was going on or what they were supposed to be doing. A real shame as, like I said, the venue itself is quite nice.
