Place is so lovely and cosy, but the food is not great especially for the high price, we had to send some things back and then they either came back just as bad or not at all, even though we had paid for it - I just left as could not even be bothered to argue. So go in for drink definitely but for the price of the food I would expect something a lot better than cold and stale.

A lovely bar/restaurant set just out the way of the busy Manchester streets. Sam’s has a great selection only beers and the food is spot on. It is traditional northern fare. I had the steak and kidney pudding which was spot on and a black pudding scotch egg to start with their brown sauce. The food is reasonably priced and well worth a visit.

Somebody recommended we go here because it was fantastic. Whilst there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, to me it just seemed like a fairly standard pub. We sat inside the front door around the corner, which looked like a cosy snug but actually when somebody opens the front door, it's freezing. Service was fine and prices were perfectly reasonable, we didn't eat, so I can't comment, but the smells coming from the kitchen were lovely

I've been meaning to try this place for a while, and I wasn't disappointed when I finally got around to it! Lovely old pub, tucked away just off the main high street, serving a huge array of drinks in a cosy old pub setting. I’ve been here a number of times with my wife and it’s always been a good experience. Today however was different. Around 1pm we sat down and soon ordered our food and drinks. Drinks arrived but the food took over an hour. As the drinks ran out the floor staff never once looked in our direction or gave us chance to order more. In the end I walked to the till and ordered more drinks. No drinks arrived and so my wife went to remind them. They came soon after, it felt like they’d forgotten. The food however was not arriving and when my wife tried to ask the guy who appears to be the lead where the food was she got the words out .”excuse me” only to see him put his palm up to her and whilst carrying on walking he snapped “it’s on its way” At the least rude and uncaring of his customers, at worst sexist. He basically waved her away. It’s a shame as the food was excellent but we won’t be returning to be treated like second class people by no more than a jumped up waiter. I do so hope he’s happy that he left her feeling this way after our family meal. And before you answer that you were busy, we all are but a kind response takes as much time as he afforded us today.

One of towns better pubs, underground (literally) and old school decor with the famous Lowry statue sat at the bar. Food is good here and they usually pour a good Guinness too. Edit: bumped up to a 5* as the Guinness has improved a lot, they're pouring great pints here at the moment. Edit 2: I'd add another star if I could after reading about them telling that woman in the daily mail to turn her kids iPad down.

Place looks good but old tables with greasy tops not so good also the added 10% on the bill not good , it should be customers choice to tip. Food bang on average the beetroot and ricotta starter strange tasty but it’s a beetroot sliced up with a cream sauce for £9 ! Barnsley chop tasty but rest chips etc bland . Gravy was ready mixed zero taste . Won’t be back as much better nearby. Regarding Sam’s reply Noted I did not complain at the time . I never do but choose to write honest reviews and go elsewhere in future. The pictures say everything . Your food was 3 star at best a grilled chop a few chips and instant gravy is only worthy of that . I said the beetroot was tasty just a strange concoction again the picture will confirm that … and why is everything scattered with water cress ? That’s very 1970’s . I did ask the server does he get the tips he confirmed yes so that’s a plus just don’t like it adding it should be a choice . Honest reviews always. It was £92 which is a lot for what we had . I don’t mind paying if food good but again 3 stars is a fair rating and I stand by everything I wrote, even gave you 4 stars for service which I was happy with

Walk down the stairs into Sam's and you will be welcomed by a warm atmosphere. The front room is the bar with the dining room behind. It has a very classical English feel to it. Comfortable & cosy. Our selections were soup, cheese & onion pie along with a mushroom wellington. All came to our table hot, well presented and flavourful. Everything was delivered at a pleasant pace. Our server throughout was charming & helpful. We had a very nice chat with Samy, the manager, at the end of our meal. He exuded charm and offered lots of suggestions for our stay in Manchester. For the traditionalist in you, Sam's Chop House is a good choice.

We visited this restaurant as a family.. 6 adults 4 children. I was absolutely appalled when who I believe is the lady who owns this place told us to turn the child’s tablet down because of the other guests!!! Instantly felt unwelcome. Maybe if the restaurant wasn’t as cold dull and quiet to the point you could hear a pin drop on the floor the child’s tablet wouldn’t have been an issue! Would she have told our children to be quiet if they made a noise ? Shocking customer service!! When you knew a big family was coming you should expect that your restaurant isn’t going stay silent and if this is an issue to your other guests you should have put us somewhere else not right next to them when the restaurant was empty! Going out with children is never easy anyway but should this stop you going out as a family ? Absolutely not!! Definitely will not be returning couldn’t wait to get out the place maybe if we felt more welcome we would have stayed for dessert.

Food wasn’t all that, service was shocking and the atmosphere was awful, I’d give a 0 star* if that was an option! Wouldn’t recommend this place one bit, I don’t even know how she even has a business to be honest with an attitude like that absolutely awful. The place was dead hardly anyone in there and this woman was more bothered about our kids iPads playing loud than actually serving us, never known anything like it. £20 for a roast which you don’t mind paying for a good roast but the vegetables was rock hard and everything was cold, they probably rushed cooking it to get us out of there to be honest. If she can treat her customers like that god knows how she treats her staff, although I will say the one staff was lovely and was welcoming but her manager lets everything down unfortunately. Place needs shutting down with a boss like that, what a miserable women 😂

I had the most delicious lamb chops and beer of my life. It had a strong aroma and flavor that was incomparable to the sheep eaten in Japan. It was so delicious that I went there two days in a row. Perhaps there were individual differences, but on the second day the scent wasn't as strong as on the first day, but it was still delicious enough. I thought that plain lamb meat was the best meat, but I was completely wrong, and I realized that lamb, with its rich cheese-like aroma and taste, is the best. Is sam's lager a beer that can only be drunk here? It's a shame that this store doesn't exist in Japan.

Mar 2024 - Great to still see a traditional pub in Manchester serving great draught beers and ciders. Good atmosphere with a brilliant statue of Lowry sat at the bar! Will definitely be trying the food next time we visit. Aug 2024 - Four months after my original review I've had to down grade my score after booking a table for my Birthday last Sunday. To begin with the welcome was disappointing as we were greeted with 'sorry it's not the best table', not what you want to hear on arrival after actually making a reservation days in advance. Drinks and main meals were served OK until the lady who cleared our plates had obviously been for a cigarette and smelt of very strong acrid smoke, not what you want from someone waiting on you. We decided to give the experience another chance and ordered the sticky toffee pudding for dessert; it was dense (which you can see in the photo), dry and still had the date stones in it, we were also given soup spoons to eat it with. To our surprise when the bill came there was a 10% service charge which we had removed as the majority of the meal had been disappointing and marred the celebration. We won't be rushing back.

The food was lovely but the service we received really let it down. We asked for a drink menu and once given it it only had wines inside so we asked if they had other drinks available as we don’t drink wine to which the waitress responded rudely “what do you need to know” my partner asked for ales and she said they didn’t have any and then realised they did… she didn’t come across very friendly. It would be much easier if they was a drinks menu for all kinds of drinks rather than made to feel like you’re putting the waitress out by asking for alternatives drinks. She also made it very clear in the restaurant she was not happy about moving tables around to accommodate for people who hadn’t booked. This just ruined the experience for us.

Girl at the bar is lovely and friendly but service at the restaurant does not exist anymore!!! The waiter was dismissive, he was very busy in a “meeting” with other people at the back of the restaurant ignoring the whole room. The fishless pie wasn’t tasty or seasoned, and the salad was very poor. We asked for sauces that never arrived, the bar didn’t have any nibbles. At the end, we couldn’t asked for the bill as the waiter was very busy laughing with his colleagues, we paid directly to the bar. We had eaten here many years ago when we lived in Manchester and loved the food, so we decided to visit again when we came back to Manchester for the first time in 20 years. We visited on a Friday evening around 7 without a booking, and were told that we could have a table, but they would need it back after an hour. No problem. We were shown to a table in a half empty restaurant, and we waited and waited. A waiter cleaned the table beside us. A waitress brought food to a table behind us, and then disappeared. However we were just ignored - no-one even asked us if we wanted a drink. After 25 minutes, the waiter who had shown us to our table took the order from another couple who had arrived 10 minutes after us. At that stage, we got up and left. So I have no idea what the food is like now, as we didn't get any!

Not going to be a good review i,m afraid. Came here on a Friday evening and seated promptly. Lovely looking pub. Attentive server at first. I ordered the French onion soup and was very disappointed, little more than thin gravy with some boiled onions in it...no taste whatsoever...was accompanied by a tiny slice of cheese on toast. Followed this with the corned beef hash which was tastier but at £19.00 with no accompaniments was in my opinion very steep....should have been advised by the waiter at least to get some gravy or jus to go with it. Never once asked by a waiter how things were at any time All in all with a glass of house wine and the 10% service charge the bill came to nearly £37....Maybe i just picked an off night.

This was a great experience. I popped in on Wednesday 17 April for lunch, and got a table in the restaurant. An impromptu visit. The staff were friendly and helpful. For the first course I had the onion soup - this was spectacular. So much onion. And the cheese of toast that comes with the soup is made in such a way that you can dip it in the soup and the hard cheese they use melts beautifully. Truly this is a well crafted dish and a very English soup which the French copy. For the main course I had the bacon chop - perfectly cooked, and very flavoursome, with good chips, and a green salad with balsamic dressing. A well balanced dish. The resutaurant had a lovely old quality to it, with proper napkins, good service and a low key vibe. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The food was excellent.

We usually order through Deliveroo. Food always excellent and arrives hot, travels well. However, twice in past 3 months we have had items missing from order which we have then had to get refunded through Deliveroo. Each time the bag has come stapled closed with correct receipt showing missing items as being present. I’m not sure who is at fault (either item not packed or deliveroo stealing) but considering switching allegiances to another chippy which is a shame as the food is excellent and does good coeliac friendly / gluten free choices.

Nice pub with good pints, an outside area over the canal, and sports on the TV.
