Been going here for 30 + years .recently the curry is full of grease used to be creamy & tasty, chicken tikka is poor 4 small pieces and dry . I've always gone to sammy's and Julie's. , but after the last few months we have decided to try elsewhere. Such a shame because no other restaurants could come close to sammy's . Hardly anyone in the restaurant these days .

Tried as heard a lot of people say it was good.. The onion bajis were flat and bland.. Curry portions/rice were small also..best part was the garlic nan.. Compared to other restaurants the value is not as good.. Usually go to Parmars where all 4 of us can easily share 3 curry's and sides and feel full with a better atmosphere.. The Shama is also a better experience.. That all said the curry was nice but not for us for a second visit..

I've been going to Sammy's for 25 year and never had a bad meal until my last two takeaway orders, 4th and 8th December. During lockdown and now in restrictions I have supported this local business by using Uber Eats and never had any cause for complaint, however the last two orders were very poor by Sammy's standards. The chicken was small pieces and the white chewy tendons bits left on the chicken meat, also the sauce was not as thick and delicious. I thought on Saturday it was a one off but after my meal tonight I'm beginning to think standards have definitely dropped. I only eat 1/2 and put the rest in the bin. I appreciate these are difficult times but it wasn't worth the price.

Went Friday evening with friends, not particularly busy. Hadn’t booked but soon seated. You have to take your own wine or beer but cannot take soft drinks as they have to bought there. Menu o.k not as extensive as most I have seen but good choice. Waiter came and took order in a hurry. Spoke very loud and quickly to repeat order and asked questions I did not understand. I asked him to repeat, he just ignored me and took menus and went away. I had asked for an orange juice but that never arrived, had to ask someone else. Food very good and arrived quickly. Service overall can be described as cursory. Wasn’t offered coffee. Had to get up and ask for the bill. Bill was hand written and very hard to read. Overall, nice food spoiled by less than interested serving staff. Other posts have said friendly warm welcome, might have been an off night. Shame though.

Normally our favourite place to get Indian food, last night we ordered take out and we picked our usual favourites. I was told a collection time and promptly arrived. The smell in the car on way home was amazing, salivating during my 8 min drive home.however, We found the rice to be cold, not tepid but actually cold, our starters the same and no salad was on the salad either, our main course was Luke warm and had to be put in oven. The garlic Nan needed oven attention too, popadoms were burnt. What a disappointment from a usually top class place.

We visited Sammy's as a group of thirteen. It's a nicely turned out curry house, perhaps a cut above the average in the area. Even the loos look freshly installed and spotlessly clean. There's a good choice of food. The list is a lot shorter than most curry restaurants, but that's no bad thing. My wife and I shared a starter for two, which was a nice mix of tasty appetisers. My Shahari MIx main was excellent, with a decent selection of tasty meats. My wife had chicken dhansak, which she said was spicer than she'd normally have had, but she also enjoyed it very much. The spice added flavour rather than making it unbearably hot. Our sides of keema rice and a paratha also satisfied. Our starters took a little while to arrive after ordering. Worth the wait though.Things to note. Sammy's has no licence. You can buy soft drinks but not alcohol. You can take your own, and there's no corkage charge. Also, they don't take debit or credit cards, so don't get caught out. You'll have to pay cash.

We wanted a good curry and our friends had been here before and were pleased to go back. Its been established a long time and the owner is about greeting customers and talking to diners. The food was very good and the staff very friendly. The only minor down sides were that they don't serve alcohol but you can bring your own so no real problem and they don't take cards - luckily we had enough cash with us. We didn't realise and there ware no visible signs to tell customers. in this day and age it should be a given. We parked close and were finished by 9.30. On return to our car we found a group of lads checking it out and had the means to break in with them so a lucky escape - be aware.

First of all the food is very average! Comparing to nearby restaurants Sammy's is expensive!!Main reason for this review is because of the way I have seen Sammy treat his waiters, very rudely especially at busy times! Not only this I have met an ex-Waiter who was a lovely young boy aged between 17-21. Who mentioned the TIP is extra pocket money for Sammy HIMSELF, and not the waiters who ACTUALLY serve us and deserve this tip???? IS THIS NOT WHY TIPS WERE GIVEN??????????Sammy I hope that this is a lie but the young boy also mentioned that he and the rest were being underpaid????Not recommended at allUnfortunately, I will not be coming again along with my family & friends.

This restaurant (Sammys) really is the best around and has been open for around 30 years so that speaks for itself as to how good the restaurant and quality of food is. The restaurant isn't licensed for alcohol so you take your own beer and wine. You just ask one of the waiters for a bottle opener and then drink it with the glasses supplied at your table. If you want soft drinks then they ask that you purchase these with the restaurant. Once seated your table is supplied with free popadoms and free pickle tray. There is a large selection of starters and main courses to choose from the menu at very fair resonable prices. There is also a childrens menu of english food if required. Myself I go for the somosas and the mixed dopiaza as this is the only restaurant that you get the onions fried and placed on top of the curry. We also order their garlic nann breads which my wife says are the best she has ever tasted. My wife and I have been going to Sammys now for over 16 years and have never had a bad experience. We both come from Huddersfield so we travel around 12 miles to eat at this restaurant. During this period we have taken many friends who themselves now eat at this restaurant on a regular basis. The waiters are fantastic. Rahil who is Sammys son and Smiller are just a few who I will mention. Both these lads and the remaining waiters provide fantastic service making sure the customer is well and truly looked after. The owner Sammy is in the restaurant every night walking round checking all people are happy with the food and service provided and you have his wife Julie who sits at the desk making out the bills and taking phone calls. The restaurant opens 6 nights a week from 5.30pm (closed Monday) The restaurant is now based on the ground floor but Sammy also owns the upstairs of the building which used to be the main restaurant once upon a time. This can be booked for functions etc. Would I recommend this restaurant to people? Yes I would. In my opinion there is no better curry house around.

It takes us 30 minutes to get to Sammie's but it's worth the drive. We have some lovely Curry houses where we live but when I'm eating there I always wish it was a Sammie's as they arn't as nice. I always get the same Curry, a Keema Korma, this time it was just how I like it. Over the years sometimes its come and its been hotter, let me tell you if your ordering a Korma its because you don't want them too spicey. It was lovely and creamy. Garlic Naan was good, starters onion bajis nice but the large piece of Chicken Tikka my husband had just melted in your mouth. It was my 60th birthday and they had put a few runners on the table. £140 for 11 of us, I think this is very reasonable. Sammie your Keema Korma is just the best.

I'm from Bradford ... I've eaten a lot of curries! This one was nice ... Didn't blow me away but I enjoyed it. Not a lot off oil in it which was good but wasn't overly keen on the naan bread .. Quite a nice atmosphere but a little chilly as it is quite a big restaurant.

Nothing had changed since I started going here in the 90's (apart from the decor / move). It is still the best curry house going. A simple menu that covers all the 'old favouites', the best garlic naan ever seen and the fact you can take you own beer / wine and don't get charged a 'corkage fee' makes it amazing value. Most recent trip was 6 people and starters, mains, sides and drinks left us with a bill of £80! It is an absolute bargain - I've no idea what the review from someone else about it being expensive in on about? If £4 for a starter and £8 for a main in excessive, I'd recommend you stick to McDonalds. Can't speak highly enough for Sammy's!

It just goes to show that you can't always trust online rave reviews. The service was excellent, with a good atmosphere, pity about the food. We loved the Lassie and the pickle tray but the chicken and prawn puree was over spiced and a rather strange texture, The mixed kebab consisted of a tasty sheek kebab, a bland (almost vegetarian style) shami kebab and a very greasy and not very pleasant onion bhagee. The chicken biryani was inedible being very coarsely spiced and the Karahi chicken was similarly coarse. The garlic naan was both undercooked and burnt (how did they do that?) and was a plain naan with garlic paste smeared over it, most unpleasant. Sammy asked our opinion and when told of our findings explained that was how they cooked here for the last 31 years. Shame on you sir.

Myself and a friend ordered a naan to share and we got one each. Other waiters were very helpful.Head waiter wasn't happy to provide change when we paid, stating that he had none to give!Head waiter wasn't happy that we hadn't booked but there were only five of us and the restaurant wasn't busy. I just felt disappointed but would give them another chance to see if this was a one off.

Samarkand is a gem in the center of Heckmondwike, I frequently visit Sammie's as it is more widely known, for the food, the atmosphere and the genuine homely feeling you get from this traditional family run restaurant. As soon as you walk in, you get a warm welcome from the owners, they get to know you by name, often I don’t even have to say my order, they already know, and that kind of personal touch is rare these days. There is free parking, it is centrally located and gives heart to the local area. The restaurant has been going from strength to strength for over 30 years, although the decor, furniture and atmosphere has been recently modernized to a high standard, the flavors in the food are consistent every time. They carry a varied menu, all priced well. I find the place has value for money, we are treated special each time we go, making the whole experience enjoyable. My order is usually the Chicken Marsala with the garlic naan, the wife goes for the butter chicken and my son usually sticks to the starter items. Poppadoms are complimentary, along with the sauces, my personal favorite being a mixture of the green chili and red onion one. For desserts we go for the mango ice cream with the homemade Kulfi ice cream, which is simply delicious. The makes it a regular favorite for us, would happily recommend to others.Keep up the good work guys. 5 stars.

Sammys Indian food is the best there is and I've been to many curry houses across Yorkshire. It's the richness of their sauces and the quality of their meat, that stands out from the rest. Sammy and Julie have built up the best reputation over many years and the only negative is, you might have to wait to get in, because the food is so fantastic.

I had heard good reviews about this place and thought I should give it a try. I visited with some friends and all I can say is I was very disappointed. It was like eating in a cafe, the food was terrible and the staff were not very enthusiastic. I would not recommend.

We used to visit Sammy's regularly when we lived in Liversedge, but haven't been back for years. We went down memory lane lastnight and have to say we were disappointed. It's lost its soul! There was something enchanting about the restaurant before it was 'upgraded'. Now it's just like many other Indian Restaurants serving satisfactory food to the masses. I find I want to forget this visit and remember it as it was.

We thought we would try Sammy's as it has always had a good reputation and our local Indian restaurant couldn't fit us in. We were greeted well and after a 5 minute wait we were taken to the upstairs part. There was a reasonable choice and we ordered starters, including soup and a range of main courses with chapati and nan bread. The starters were disappointing and expensive for the amounts. The mixed tikka consisted of 2 bite size pieces of chicken and 2 bite sized pieces of lamb with a bit of side salad. I would have expected double the amount for the price. It was also cold. The tomato soup one of our children had was watery and tasteless and has been slopped out of the bowl getting to us. The main courses were no better than I have had from supermarket take away cook yourself meals. The nan bread was doughy and undercooked at one end. Service wasn't great with long waits and when we got our main course we had no plates. Things were dumped a little unceremoniously on the table and we weren't ever asked if everything was OK.On leaving I went to the toilet to find the hot water in the gents didn't work. Neither did the hand drier. One of the ladies toilets had no hand drying facilities at all. The bill was substantial for the amount and quality of food that we got and it was at least 30% more than we usually pay for better. Bear in mind that the only drinks were a small jug of orange juice and a soft drink. Maybe a busy night issue but overall an experience that means we won't be back in a hurry.

No room downstairs in the refurbished restaurant so we were sent upstairs, we waited to be served in a very cold empty room. Poppadoms delivered, so they knew we were there. Then nothing - forgotten or disregarded. After a long long wait our orders were taken, we requested cutlery, napkins and glasses, reluctant waiter shrugged his shoulders. Starters arrived, still no cutlery, napkins or glasses! Starters were faultless. Mains were delayed and wrong. We had waited so long we accepted what we we served, ate it and left without leaving a tip. We will not be returning.

Food was bland and land dish was not tender enough for my liking. It was OK for the only choice on New Year's Day.Boyfriends dish on the other hand was incorrect - asked for chicken but got what we thought was lamb (we hope) with that being said though it was apparently 'best curry he's ever had' hmmm... Maybe I just made a bad choice? Not a massive curry fan anyway but have the odd cravingI've had better

We used to go to Sammy every weekend until the kids came along very good food and value for money. We went New Year Eve 2015 booked a table for 6.30pm for the three of us. We were put upstairs as the restaurant was bursting with party revellers, upstairs it was very cold nothing had been altered carpets ripped my chair was having a wrestle with the carpet, we were sat there 30mins before our order was taken another 30mins when the starters came, waiting a hour for our main had to ask for cutlery twice. When main finally came the Garlic Nans where not cooked everyone in our room where either sending stuff back asking for cutlery there was only 2 staff on upstairs so they were rushed. Paid bill told Julie about it all and she said it was very busy please will be better next time we go. If it was that busy then get in extra staff in!Not impressed at all! I think upstairs needs to be renovated we wont be going for a while will stick to Aagrah.

I do get irritated with other reviewers when they complain about dumb things like they didn't say "they were a bring your own restaurant". Its West Yorkshire therefore likely to be a faith that does not encourage alcohol. Be thankful that they tolerate it. RANT OVER The food is first class in an up market curry house and as such the food is authentic and delicious. The service is second to none with the owner and his wife visiting the tables to ensure all is well. The masala fish is the best I have ever had. View it as a luxury curry house (ie no alcohol served and they don't take cards as payment), take your own tipple and cash then have a great experience. Then set it against the price and you can see why it has been the premier eating place in the area for than 20 years.

We travel 30 minutes to get to this curry house but it is well worth it. We have great curry houses where we live but there's just something special about Sammys. The chicken starters were succulent, the Curries are the best we have ever had, garlic buttered warm Naan breads all at a very competitive price. The waiters are always polite and Sammy walks around asking if everything is alright. Do try you wont be disappointed.

Attended an 18th Birthday Party last night in the room upstairs - roughly 40 people sat down to eat - now I've eaten here before and it's always been good well presented food but I was prepared for a slightly different experience considering the amount of people to cater for & the downstairs restaurant was full too. Last night was by far the best food I have eaten there. The waiters had a great system for taking every bodies orders & all the starters, mains & side dishes all came hot & at the same time and totally delicious. The staff were fantastic especially Islam who attended to everyone. It's a bring your own alcohol Indian restaurant & the staff give you access to a fridge to keep all your drinks nice & cold so you can just help yourself. With the restaurant allowing you to bring your own alcohol the total cost for two of us for starters, mains & sides came to £30 & that included a tip. Fantastic night, fantastic food, fantastic staff 5***** stars.

Ordered a house special comprising a tasty spinach curry and a delicious mushroom curry 🥰 Together with the pilau rice and the largest naan bread I have ever seen, it was more than I could eat but my family happily shared it 😊 Impressed by the staff who made us feel welcome even though we were the last people in the restaurant and didn't try to hurry us up. They were happy for me to bring in my own reusable cup and didn't enquire as to the contents. The decor was very tasteful with lights that changed colour which had quite a relaxing effect.

I originally wrote a review stating how rude these people are. They replied calling me a liar. Awful people. Rude & lies. Then questioned the name on the order. My daughter ordered I wrote the review . I have attached their response. Dreadful people. Then the audacity to slag off a whole neighbourhood. Lost lots of custom.
