I had an Americano and one slice of toast today. I was charged £6.50. I queried the cost as coffee is £3.50 so one slice of toast cost £3. I argued with the man but he took my money. I will not be returning. A shame because the coffee was very good but I was ripped off.

Seriously nice coffee. Espresso is spot on, tastes like a rost that's on the darker side of medium, probably a 1:1.25 brew ratio. I normally order a cappuccino, nicely balanced and the milk is streached to perfection. Food is glorious too. Pricy but glorious. If you want cheap eats, go to spoons. If you're after an enjoyable lunch, order some pasta. Beautiful!

Had a very nice meal here, visited in the past a good while ago and decided to go back whilst in the area. Lasagne was really tasty, the garlic bread was nice but for my taste needed more garlic. It would have been if the lasagne had come with salad and garlic bread as opposed to either. A small side salad would have been much appreciated, we didn’t want to have to choose between that and the bread. The staff were very professional and friendly, especially the young woman who served us. We would return, we enjoyed our meal but the main menu could have been better, can you offer dishes without so much chilli, some people have a problem digesting it.

What a shame on such a nice day that service was extremely slow, repetitive, and I mean repetative….no obvious discussion amongst staff.Felt extremely pressured and made to, feel uncomfortable.Still feeling like we were being “watched”,..ordered drinks…they took ages, then ordered food, before 3 other tables…to the point we asked if our order had been forgotten .assured it had not .we awaited our food…myself had bruschetta….omg it was so oily, burnt garlic, and not at all nice.my OH had a sausage pasta dish, which he also said was to oily… I went to visit the ladies before our plates were collected.so I had no chance to mention our issues….OMG how shocked was I to see the chef coming out of the toilets having checked on them. Still in his chef whites…..if that’s what you could call them.Having walked past the kitchen.rest assured I WILL NEVER EAT in this place again. The kitchen was filthy, with pan scrubs and dish clothes on the floor, fresh food ready to serve amongst food returned and dirty plates, complete disarray…..I am completely shocked that this place is still open……….

Very near the Abbey in a gated courtyard (few steps or access through the Clockmakers Arch on St Mary's Chare), it's lovely. Sandbrick buildings make a lovely backdrop to colourful parasols and planters (chef cut the rosemary from them as we sat enjoying the sunshine. Sanitiser every where, each table indoors had a bottle. Service was cheerful and caring. Don't be in a hurry,we relaxed and enjoyed the wait for delicious pollo al rosmarino (recipe is the chef/owner's secret, I did try) and a vegetarian wrap. The coffee must be the best in Hexham so for us it will be Arriverderci Salute for us.

I never visit Hexham without coming to Salute at least once. Incredibly friendly and funny staff, good food and coffee, lovely courtyard to sit out in. I either come on my own, with my boyfriend or with my children. It is a very relaxed place suitable for anyone. Terrible customer service, even worse coffee. Ordered 2x iced lattes, was delivered 2x room temperature black coffees. The young waiter then tried to argue with me that they were in fact iced lattes. He couldn’t comprehend the espresso to milk ratio so begrudgingly went to get me some milk. He came back with what can only be described as a thimble full - for 2 supposed lattes. Reluctantly I poured in my milk, took a mouthful only to discover they were warm. The same waiter just looked at me blankly when I asked why they weren’t cold. His best response was “well I can get you some ice”. Eventually someone more senior came over but at this point we threw in the towel and left. Perhaps some staff training would be good. Some customer skills definitely wouldn’t go amiss and a dictionary to determine the definition of “iced”.

We stumbled upon this lovely little Italian cafe by chance because I noticed the courtyard at the back. The sun was shining and sitting outside in the courtyard surrounded by beautiful old buildings it felt like we were in Italy. The waiter sprayed our hands with sanitiser and everything felt Covid secure. My husband and older daughter ordered and thoroughly enjoyed focaccia and ciabattas stuffed with salmon and mozzarella and the other salami and tomato. My daughter loved her coffee. Our youngest daughter is disabled and struggles to eat - we asked for the fried eggs on the menu and were told no as they were too busy. We explained there was nothing else on the menu she could eat but it was still no so she had nothing. I just had a pot of tea but the waiter forgot to return with milk. He was so busy we didn’t see him again to ask for it. We paid the bill and went to Tesco’s to buy our daughter some food she could eat. If it hadn’t been for the refusal to fry one egg we would have given five stars. We will return but will take some food with us for our disabled little girl.

Such a treat after all these lockdown weeks. Clearly I’m not alone in jonesing for really good pasta; three tables were taken and it was only just noon. There is a little coffee bar at the back which made us feel like we were in Italy, then a nice and bright main room. The cappucino was delcious, a strong flavour (typicaly Italian). This establishment seriously undersells itself by only calling itself a coffee bar. It is far more than that - it's an excellent little restaurant providing authentic and excellent Italian meals at very inexpensive prices. Delicious food - and good wine too even though there is only a minimal choice of bottles. Personal service and attention from Paolo (I think he said he came from Sardinia). We found Salute by sheer chance whilst wandering around Hexham on New Year's Eve. We noticed their advertising A-board standing at the Abbey end of St Mary's Chare, and decided to investigate. Glad we did! Minimal effort put into customer experience. We waited 15mins for a coffee to be served in an empty cafe. The toasted sandwiches were served on white bread (no choice) with no garnishing. Italian radio station blaring from the open kitchen, which I had to ask to be turned down so we could talk. Just seemed to have no desire to create a welcoming atmosphere with customer experience in mind. The space has historically been a cafe in the hands of different owners over the years. It's a great location but just a shame that the standards have dropped.

Hexham is really fortunate to have this little genuine injection of true Sardinia in its midst. A very compact coffee house with a nice courtyard for al fresco opportunities. We have been here for only a few days but have already returned several times, we were so impressed. Ice cream sundaes beautifully presented - yummy! Coffee outstandingly good. Light lunch was extremely enjoyable. The typically Sardinian seafood Fregole was wonderful - loved it. The welcome was each time, really friendly, chatty & engaging. This is a lovely little cafe in a beautiful courtyard setting. Unfortunately, there are too many tables for the amount of staff who are available to wait on them - particularly on a sunny day like today. I felt very sorry for the lovely poor waitress who was doing her best, but was having to deal with a number of disgruntled customers who were having to wait too long for their meals - there was only one person in the kitchen preparing the food. This place has huge potential to be a wonderful little cafe but it needs to be better managed, and needs more staff if the courtyard is being used. The coffee is fantastic though and the food is lovely when it eventually arrives.

So you think you need to go to Milano or Roma for authentic Italiano cuisine. Wrong. Salute ( owned and run by Paolo) is a little touch of Italy in Hexham surrounded by stone recovered from Roman times especially in the Abbey a mere 100 yards away. Family run and cooked. All by Paolo and his family. Truly Italiano. I'm a local and Salute ( which all locals refer to as ' Paolo' s ) is pretty much the only place I dine out. This is a great place, we’ve been a couple of times for coffee and pastries (their lemon cannoli are amazing!), but never for lunch. We went midweek to blow away the new year blues, and were not disappointed. There are plenty of sandwiches/toasties/standard lunchtime options, but we went for dishes from the specials menu - delicious pasta dishes, risotto, stews, salads etc all priced £7-£12 (bargain!) We shared bread and olives and a tomato and mozzarella salad as a starter, then I had a Sicilian seafood pasta dish and my wife had a spicy Italian sausage stew. All were great, washed down with a couple of glasses of wine each and some friendly conversation with the waiter. Finished with the best coffee in Hexham and a couple of their Italian pastries - these are a firm family favourite and are definitely worth a visit in their own right!
