We are quite a fussy family and have high expectations. We also had one vegetarian and a fussy child. Our food was delicious, served in a timely manner and of a very good quality. Extra roast spuds were put on the table, with plenty of gravy. The emphasis is on the roast dinner with minimal choice for starters. Sticky toffee pudding was fabulous. Yes, we will be going back.

On Monday I booked a table for two on Satruday. On Saturday evening we strolled up to the bar, to be told that the restaurant isn't open on Satrurdays. Family from all around (12 of us) decided to meet in Whitstable for a Sunday Lunch, this venue being chosen. Read the feedback and began to become a little concerned.Well, i can report, no need, food was in abundance, service was excellent, choice of roasts were perfect. The venue has plenty of character, best described as a garage / barn conversion. I suppose a certain times of year (being in a shaded position) it may get a little chilly, so take a jumper, otherwise, could not fault the place for its character and good food.

Thanks so much to all the staff for making this a special Sunday lunch on a very rare day off. Everyone was so attentive and the food was really good. We received apologies for "small" portions with a bowl of shell-on prawns as an starter. But there was no need. There was so much food we bought a doggie bag home. Seasoned to perfection. Piping hot. Staff were attentive to just the right degree. Plates arrived tapas style which I loved.

Been twice before and quite enjoyed it. This time all changed. Room was cold, many people kept their coats on. Food was edible at best. Dishes were very basic. No desserts available other than fruit. We’re local and there is enough good restaurants around to not need to go back here. If they carry on like this I’ll be surprised if anyone does!

It started badly with it being so cold. I put my coat over my legs and when you looked pretty much everyone in the restaurant were wearing their coats. The food was tasty and plentiful but really simple and nothing I couldn't rustle up at home, chicken, fish and steak with salad and chips. There is no menu or choice you are given what they've cooked. Service was swift. There was no desserts available but they offered ice cream and a lame excuse that their supplier had let them down. Not good enough. Go and get some from elsewhere. Our lovely hosts (this was a birthday celebration) were really embarrassed. Which is such a shame. We won't be returning.

Freezing cold restaurant (we all kept our coats on). Limited drinks choice (if you like good or even average wine forget it). Food which can only be described as average at best (think poor quality tapas all served at the same time) and whisked away when it looked like the plate was 75% finished. The dessert choice was “We have run out. You can have fruit or coffee”!! I wouldn’t mind but we were the second table that got seated in there so they hadn’t exactly had a run on puddings! Seriously guys, read some of the the other reviews, this place is a definite miss. Save your money or go spend it at the other decent eating establishments all within 200m of this place.

I found this place cosy and clean and had no idea of what to expect as there was no menu so we went with it we had about 8 jumbo prawns a bowl of steak and a large complete chicken which they apologised for the size as they were closing the following day for Christmas and if we wanted to take it away with us we could ( as it was too much to eat and had it for dinner the next day ) this also cam with a selection of vegetables and a nice fresh salad. Staff were friendly and attentive and would recommend .

We were a well behaved group , I have worked in restaurant s before and there was absolutely no customer service , I wouldn't go back as it was like this on both occasions that I booked .I would strongly recommend not booking any group parties here as they can't cater for them .Disappointing.......

Had a group booking yesterday for my best friends 40th meal. 29 of us in total. What first astonished me was the waitress who started laying the plates out at 12:30pm.. She was clearly annoyed for some reason, and was rushing, giving all our party evil looks as she was setting up around us. This instantly made everyone feel uncomfortable from the start. The food was excellent, which makes this review all the more disappointing.. as they score very highly when it comes to the food.. The manager began shouting at children who were innocently playing in the outdoor section. This was dreadful behaviour on his behalf. This also upset the parents of the party. Sort out your manners, general etiquette - General Manners cost us nothing; yet, earn us respect when we use them. WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING OR RECCOMENDING SHAME ON YOU ALL

If you read my other reviews you'll see that I never (well not anymore) write negative reviews... in fact I'm quite hard to really disappoint. So it's with a heavy heart that I have to give the Salt Marsh such a poor review. I've been twice and the food was excellent as was the setting but it's the service that was quite simply appalling. We were made to feel unwanted. It was my 40th birthday party and the whole experience was nearly ruined by the attitude of the staff. They were huffing and puffing like serving us was a terrible affliction and the owner completely lost control and shouted at our children who were outside in the courtyard. We couldn't run tabs as that was 'too difficult' and we when it came to paying they wanted everyone to pay exactly at the same time and reminded me several times that there was money outstanding.. despite the fact that having been there 2 weeks earlier I had picked up the £65 that was left after another party (not mine) after already having paid what I owed - so they knew I wasn't going anywhere.I could go on about the other issues such as the 20 plus phone calls we had to make to organise the meal as they never rang us back and were disinterested in trying to help.... but I'm boring myself here.

Came here to celebrate a friends surprise 40th and it is fabulous! I wasn't really sure what to expect as there is no menu, the chef just provides plate upon plate of food that you just delve into family style. Our plates consisted of whole fish and prawns with a spicy salsa, roasted chicken thighs with roasted veg, strips of beef in a creamy sauce and lots and lots of salad, greens, bread and chips! Amazing! The staff were very attentive and made sure of any allergies/intolerances before serving the food, then made sure you had all you wanted before tidying away! Such a lovely relaxed way of serving a lot of guests! I will certainly be returning soon.

We have been to the Salt Marsh twice and both times the food was excellent. The four stars and "but" has to be because it was quite cold in the restaurant. It is an old stables and although the heating was on some of our party kept their coats on. They could easily charge a bit more for the great food and service and insulate the place to make it comfortable.THE FOOD.Served in a different way, there is no menu and you are brought a selection of the day's food to your table for everybody to share. With six of us in our party we had two beautiful sea bass, chicken and mushrooms, steak and red wine, an aubergine bake, a large bowl of fresh veg, a large bowl of chunky chips and a bowl of salad.Fabulous value at £20 per head.Relaxed and fun place. We will definitely be back when things warm up.

Why have I not been before? My wife and I visited on a very cold Saturday evening. There was only one other couple but the background music helped to provide atmosphere. We were warmly greeted and seated. The menu ( which changes according to what chef gets in and prepares. There are no menus as such, you are told what is on ) is short but interesting. We were offered dishes comprising chicken, fish, steak, meatballs, prawns, mushroom and chops . There is a delicious salad and chips to.....die.....for! Wine is basically 'red or white' and very reasonably priced! We chose, whole sea bass, spicy meatballs and chicken in sauce. Washed down with a very serviceable Malbec. Service was pleasant and efficient and the food plentiful and absolutely scrummy; the sea bass was soft and tasty accompanied by a fiery chilli pesto! The meatballs spicy and richly sauced and the chicken tasty. Oh, did I mention the chips?! We had room for a dessert of brownie and an ab....so.....lutely beautiful Crema Catalana.....it was mouth wateringly divine! Better than many I've had in Spain. Great nosh, service and price. Go.

Booked this restaurant for 23 family members the night before my wedding. Weren't quite sure what to expect but we were completely blown away by the service, the food and the ambience. The host was so welcoming, charming, courteous and generous, we felt immediately at home. She checked our guests preferences, allergies and intolerences etc and was extremely amenable to ensuring everyone was catered for - even to the extent of bringing in food from across the road for a very challenging eater. No need to order, the host serves a variety of Tapas styles dishes. So much food, all cooked to perfection, they even plated up some extras to take home for a party member who was late arriving and couldn't actually get to the restaurant as well as doggy bags for some very lucky dogs waiting at home. Everyone loved it from the over 80's to the under 8's. We will be back again and we cannot recommend this place highly enough.

We booked to stay at the Duke of Cumberland on Friday and so it seemed the most convenient option to book the adjoining Salt Marsh Restaurant. It is advisable to book in advance as it is only small - I think I counted 7 tables with a max of 28 seated places. It is an old stable block that has been converted but still retains it's vaulted ceiling and rustic charm. It is a lovely setting and ambience for a relaxed evening. We were a little sceptical at first as there was no conventional menu to review. Of the six dishes on offer, we were told we could choose 3 for £15 a head or 4 for £20 a head. It was very 'tapas' style. We had lamb chops, strips of steak, king prawns and meatballs. They were all very well presented and lovely. These dishes were accompanied by roast new potatoes, alioli, a dressed salad and vegetables. The service was good. We were not rushed and although our booking was 6.30pm, I don't think we left the restaurant until about 10pm.A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

We had salads, cooked vegetables, sauted potatoes and bread and then chose steak with mushrooms, chicken, garlic prawns and then 2 whole seabass which was delicious. Pudding was included in the £20 a head package but we'd bought a birthday cake and the waitress lit the cake and brought this through for us with ice creams.Unfortunately we had 2 children who were picky eaters and our group asked if we could bring some chips in for them to eat and they had no problem with this at all which is amazing really. Ate here as part of a group of 17 for a leaving do which was accommodated for well with the table laid out ready for us, drinks orders were taken care of separately, food was served gradually as we all started to be seated and service/waitresses were pleasant and accommodating. I was slightly nervous about eating here as I have never done so before due to there being no menu and you are served a selection of dishes on the day which for me as a vegetarian can be difficult. However I was happy with the options given on the table for me to choose from, the main being bean casserole which was delicious, and then a selection of salad, potatoes, creamy mushrooms on toast, olives and a dip; all of which I found to be very tasty, filling and I left very full! The meat options I was also told were tasty and consisted of steak, chicken, sea bass and prawns. There was plenty for us all to eat and unfortunately a lot of waste too which could possibly have been less if tables weren't cleared so quickly and we could have tucked in still as we were happy to sit and chat for a while but the option wasn't there. We each paid £15 a head for the meal which I felt was fine as I did leave full and satisfied, but I'm not sure I'd be so keen to pay the usual £25 3 courses as advertised. Overall, I would recommend giving this establishment a try and I would also like to return with a smaller group to compare the difference.

Have eaten here a few times over the last few years and it has always been amazing.. However, when we went last week the change was shocking. Previous I always left stuffed, happy and would recommend to anyone that asked a good place to eat in whitstable. Now that will not be the case, I will be advising they stay away from here. Online they state three courses for £25, or you can have 2 for £20.. Anyway when we arrived we were told that the 2 courses were now all served together as one so there's lots of sharing food in one stage.. This is fine by me.. I don't mind at all not splitting it into starters and main. However, compared to usual and considering there were 5 of us the choice of food (no menu) is now VERY limited, although there are a good few dishes stated you may only pick 2 lighter and 2 heavier. This doesn't seem to make sense when there are 5 people. We asked if we could have a greater selection as that was one of the bonuses to this restaurant which they allowed but cut down the size of each dish because of this. Anyway, when the food arrived, I was shocked at how little there was, they are selling it as a 2 course meal served all at once but basically they have scrubbed the starters. All in all if it had been split into 5 we would have had a small/average size main each. The food was gone in minutes and we were still hungry. When asking the waitress about the change she stated that the prawns alone cost them £1 each for them to buy.. Well that's not my problem! And when fetching the chef/part owner he was rude from the offset. He told us that our complaint was weird and that the complaints they get are usually about his attitude! Which now, I'm by surprised about at all. We explained politely that the food itself was delicious but the portions were too small for the way they sell it and the price. He again mentioned about the cost of the prawns, so I explained there were meatballs and chicken thighs (both low cost) and this would average out the price. He also tried telling us we'd had a 5 course meal because there were 5 dishes, but there were 5 of us! He wasn't taking in anything we said. There was no taking to him. We didn't want a discount we just wanted a bit more food but we ended up leaving hungry and paying what we thought it was worth. I adore good food, I love eating out and I usually order one of the most expensive things on the menu as I'm happy to pay a fair amount for a decent meal, I'm shocked at the change in the saltmarsh and will not be going back. The Oxford however where we ate last night was amazing! Go there instead!

Dined here for the first time and was very disappointed. Went out for my sisters birthday on my other sisters recommendation that last time she went it was great and she left stuffed. Unfortunately this time although the food was good the portions were incredibly small for quite a bit of money and we were all left dissatisfied. When we made a complaint the manager came storming out and confronted us . He was clearly gunning for a row and was outright rude . He passed our complaint of small portions and bad value for money as weird and pretty much shouted at us. I wouldn't be dragged back there for any reason. Steer clear.

This place was recommended to me & I wasn't disappointed at all!! Food is fantastic & very reasonable too. Was told by lovely waitress about their Sunday lunches too can't wait to try them. In particular we had chickpeas & chorizo, much to my husbands disgust- however he loved them said it was probably the best tasting dish!! Also good was the rib eye steak prawns & homemade alioli in fact I could've eaten it all again. We will return

I was part of the group Peter reviewed and would like to point out to Fiona that we were also polite; if we had been told chorizo was with the fish we would have asked for an alternative. When we did, we were told we had not said we had a vegetarian in our group - we were not asked, but assumed fish meant fish. This was a simple mistake but the chef/part-owner stormed out, shouted at us, told us we could have the meal free of charge (which no-one wanted) and then said he just wanted us to f--- off'. This, in front of two children, was not acceptable and caused the member of our party to stand up and say 'you have gone too far'. I followed the argument outside and tried to calm the chef down but he said he did not wish to discuss it and slammed a door, (possibly kitchen) in my face. No-one should treat customers in this way; where has common civility gone? This person, as I read the reviews, seems to be a Jekyll and Hyde.

Visited July 12th and had an excellent meal. The staff were more than willing to off a vegetarian option when requested. They had informed us that the fish option was served with chorizo. We asked for and received an extra serving spoon and a knife, it's amazing what a polite question will get you. We witnessed the incident with the chef reported by another group, we did not hear the chef shout or look like he was going to hit anyone. We did hear him offer all meals free of charge. We saw a male member of the party rise from his chair in a threatening manner so maybe this could have been handled differently by both parties. We will definitely visit again

This appeared to be a good choice for a large party of friends and family for a Sunday lunch, sadly turned into memorable lunch for other reasons. We had a large party booked in unfortunately one of the party was delayed (by 5/10mins through no fault of her own) but we went ahead and ordered and had told the staff not to worry. Sunday lunch there is a fairly simple affair, a number of main courses are available and we were asked to pick 3 from a list of 5. There were 4 meat and one fish dish which was fine as not everyone eats meat. We picked the leg of lamb, the rib eye steak and the mixed fish (sea bass & prawns). When the fish turned up it was covered in large pieces of chorizo, which for the non meat eaters was obviously a problem. We politely asked if something could be done about this, IE could it be replaced? What happened next was simply unbelievable! The cook came out and started shouting at our table, telling us it was what we ordered, we were late and we could all leave without paying anything (short and edited version). He would not listen to us at all when all we were asking was could he replace it with something else. He actually appeared to be close to hitting one of us. This whole event actually caused great distress to one of our party that actually lives in Whitstable and caused great distress to her children. (Apart from totally ruining all of our party's Sunday lunch.) This was a great shame as the food was OK, although there were no serving spoons given and I think we were expected to pull the meat of the leg of lamb in the style of Henry VIII as there was no knife or other implements supplied to carve it. The waiting staff did their best to keep smiling and look after us after the cook left the room but were obviously battling to sit on the fence as they had to go back to work. We did leave without paying the bill as he had told the staff not to take anything but we did make sure the front of house staff received a very good tip, they deserve it if they have to work with this guy day in day out.Unbelievable experience and have never had one like it before and I know quite a few hot headed chefs. This guy obviously has a major stress problem and I seriously think he should seek professional help.

Not only was my Fathers' Day treat for lunch tasty beyond all expectations but the owners of the place were charming and bent over backwards to make this a special day - and not jus for me - I could see the attention across the room. . Don't be confused by the so-called "lack of choice" - let chef decide! I'd come back in a shot!

We were looking for a special place to celebrate a special birthday and , boy, did we find it ! No set menu - dishes chosen by the chef to suit the local market. Sharing six platters of fish , meat and vegetarian dishes plus bread, salad and potatoes. Add to that a selection of desserts to tuck into. Superb - and excellent value at £25 per head plus drinks. Worth a visit to Whitstable in itself. Thanks Salt Marsh for a special evening.

Visited Salt Marsh for Sunday lunch last weekend, based purely on overwhelming Trip Advisor recommendation. And we weren't disappointed. Sat outside on authentic old iron benches in the sunshine... our waitress was supremely friendly and attentive... and the food, while simple, was to die for. The sharing plates are a great idea - we opted for the fish platter, which came with a whole Dover Sole, a red mullet, mounds of giant prawns and grilled asparagus, plus a generous plate of beautifully tender rump steak strips and slow-cooked lamb in red wine. That, plus a voluminous bowl of perfect roast potatoes and honey-glazed parsnips and carrots, set us back the princely sum of £15 a head. It is easily worth double that. A fantastic place... thanks to all for a great meal... we will be definitely be back and have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

There was a little confusion when we arrived at the restaurant as despite booking, the restaurant was closed for a private function. However rather than turn us away, we were seated in the pub and served with one of the best meals we have had; beautifuly fresh, piping hot, and delicious. It's very rare to come away so satisfied with both food and service and I only wished we lived closer so we could eat here more often !

Never eaten here before, it was by far the best meal I've had out in some time. No menu, but an excellent explanation of what's on offer by the staff. The food is served all at once, there were eight plates in front of my girlfriend and I, slices of rump steak, a whole fish, meatballs, king prawns, fresh salad, garlic potatoes, greens and I forget the last. It was all delicious. Dessert was a selection of cakes and ice creams, we got a taste of all five. Staff were brilliant, the setting was relaxed and there was no rush. I love the Saltmarsh, the laid back atmosphere & always friendly welcoming staff. You get to choose 3 of 4 starters to share plus a big salad & brochette then 3 of 4 mains also to share with some sort of potatoes & seasonal veg. Then you choose your own pudding. We had king prawns, mushroom toast, steak, chicken, lamb plus other things & it was all lovely & all for a set price of £20. At any given opportunity I always try & go here.

We went to this restuarant, after going to another which was fully booked. Apparently so was this one, however we were informed by a very helpful and friendly lady that if we opted for a "Hit" they could accomodate us and that the food would arrive in good time. We were not dissapointed!A hit is a sort of tapas/mixture of lovely different things. We had chicken, steak, prawns and lots of other delights, too numerous to mention. It was lovely, reasonably priced and all of us (two couples) had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The two front of house ladies were excellent: attentative and helpful, seeing that we were always attended to - without being overbearing.A great night out - and we will be back!

I booked a table for my wife and I at Salt Marsh about a week before our visit for my birthday. I've eaten here a couple of times before and again in did not disappoint. The staff were polite, welcoming and friendly. I like the fact that there's no menu and they cook what food they have in at the time. Although the restaurant was busy and we had to wait quite a long time before our starters arrived, the ambience of the place, low lighting and excellent service did not put us off as we enjoyed a bottle of wine as we waited. The courses were a sort of tapas selection which we shared. The starters we had were spicy chicken and chorizo, king prawns and spicy meat balls with salad and dips. I thought the starters couldn't be beaten but we then had sea bass, steak and honey coated garlic chicken with roast potatoes and roasted vegetables. Amazing food. The portions were plenty. So much so we couldn't have desserts. For the total bill of £55 was amazing value for money. A great way to end my birthday.

This is a great little place. It feels like you are eating in a antiques roadshow storage area. The design of the place is really cool and something a bit different. Not to many tables which brings a more intimate feel to the place. The decor is cool and definitely works well with the concept they are going for. The food is outstanding. The best way of eating Tapas Style. I would say small dishes but the portion sizes as quite substantial. You certainly get your moneys worth. The staff are very attentive and friendly could not fault them. And fair play to remembering the menu off by heart. Another quirky little aspect the the place "No menus". Overall a great little findMy only advice possibly would be to turn down the ceiling lights a little. Just would add a closer atmosphere to the place. And to keep the door to the kitchen shut, The chefs must really love their food. Could hear them a mile off

I was in a party of four, we went for Sunday lunch, there is no menu as such, the restaurant cooks what is fresh and what is available, the way it was served to us was one of my favourite parts of the meal, they brought 2 meat dishes and a fish dish to the centre of the table with vegetables and salad, I love sharing food so for me this type of eating is ideal, the food was delicious and the staff very accommodating, we all felt very comfortable in the restaurant which had an eclectic feel. It is excellent value. As the restaurant is a part of the Duke of Cumberland pub (the restaurant is in a completely separate building so don't let the thought of the pub put you off) after you have finished your delicious meal you can pop into the pub for an after dinner drink. I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning.

If you're Joey from friends then this place isn't for you. However, if you're happy to share and open to trying an ever changing seasonal menu (one that is verbal and not written down) - then you'll love the place. Our hosts were attentive, cheerful, and friendly; the atmosphere was cosy, we felt at home around the big solid table; it wasn't cramped or too noisy; and the food was not only delicious but there was so much of it and plenty of options to suit everyone! Not something you usually expect when having sharing plates (I was a little nervous about the quantities before they arrived).Starters: king prawns in garlic butter, chicken and chorizo, cheese and leek croquettesMains: Steak, Sea trout, lamb, chicken in a cream sauce (this was delicious and my favourite). We were supposed to have three but chef got carried away so we ended up with all four options.Pudding: brownies, chocolate pear cake, plum and almond cake, ice cream (vanilla, vanilla caramel, chocolate), plus tea or coffeeWe also had three bottles of wine between eight of us and it was, in my book, incredibly reasonable in price. (Main + starter: £20; Pudding with tea/coffee was £5; we paid £35 each so £10 for the wine and tip).I will definitely be going again.

I visited here with a group of friends , I have only ever heard good things about this place and my experience reinforced what I had heard. It is an unusual little place which all adds to the charm , it is not pretentious , it is what it is . There are no menus , something we all agreed suited us because there are always a lot of time wasted with the dilemma of too many choices. They are considerate to vegetarians so this does not eliminate those with specific dietary needs. In fact there was a customer there who had stated she had an intolerance to garlic which they catered for. The portions are generous and delicious , refreshing to have salad that was not the usual bland , one colour attempt that I have had other places and prawns that are what they should be, big ! The main meal was superb , could not fault the rib eye steak which was mouth watering and the fish that was cooked to perfection with again big mussels. The restaurant is small and personable , a fact we all liked very much as you could be fooled into thinking it was a venue booked solely for you and your friends. I cannot fault this place on any level , so whether it is a romantic evening or one in which you can catch up with friends , it will tick the box ! Also very reasonably priced so you will not leave feeling significantly lighter .

Staff friendly, and bar was decorated lovely for Halloween. Weve visited a few times now. When we visited a few weeks back, i ordered a jacket potato with Tuna Mayo, and the Tuna was sooo wet from too much mayo, it ruined it. The coleslaw my friend had was the opposite, and dry… This time, we had Lasagne, which we both were looking forward to trying, but sadly the top was so hard i struggled to cut it, let alone eat… the filling itself was pleasant. Unfortunately, both of us ended up with upset stomachs the same night…. A shame, as we both like visiting, and have had meals that have been lovely. Maybe a different cook this time?
