I’ve being going to Salt & Malt for years, so appreciate the standard & have always accepted “ you get what you pay for”. However standards have notably slipped & it wasn’t worth the extra. Lemon garnish has gone & TINY portion of chips - Paid for as “large cod & chips”. It’s notably gone down hill when it used to be the best. :(

£25 for 2 Large Cod and chips, Take Away, happy to pay for decent food this was far from that, dry and bland and deffo not a large Cod. Afraid to say it was the worst cod I've ever had. Just a honest review wont be returning anytime soon! Disappointing food to say the least!

We love this restaurant. The staff are always very pleasant and the setting is wonderful. The batter is gluten free which is wonderful for my husband as he is gluten intolerant and can’t have battered fish very often. My only comment this time was that the chips weren’t as hot as they should have been.

Bad portions, ok location, vaguely apologetic staff. I got a small Cod and chips (£11) in an effort to save money however I feel like I should have just forked out an extra 1.50 for the large. Considering a friend at the exact same amount of chips and battered sausage for £6, £11 for this feels a joke. This particular option is a rip-off. I asked to be upgraded to the large however apparently it had already been sent out. Food is nice but value wise it's through the floor.

We stopped for a take away lunch to sit on the benches provided. Fish and chips were nice BUT the peas were disgusting - they had garlic added, why on earth do you need to add garlic with peas unless it’s to try and disguise the fact that they were cheap peas with no taste, they should notify customers that the peas have garlic in them due to allergies plus people who don’t like garlic. What was a nice meal in a nice setting was ruined by the disgusting peas and overpriced!

What is the appeal of salt and malt fish and chip shop. A piece of overcooked haddock covered in leathery batter. Dry chips freezing cold battered Cumberland sausages. Which just doesn’t work putting the cold bit to one side a piece of cod the size of a fishfinger all for the grand total of £40 they did this to me once before two years ago but I thought give them the benefit of a doubt and low and beholders exactly the same absolute garbage

Got seated outside quickly. After we had looked at a menu we were ready to order. Staff walked past several times without taking our order. I walked in and asked for someone to take our order. I ordered the haddock which was not cheap at £18. It was as tough as old boots. so much so that it got stuck in my throat and we had to leave. This is my second visit and I'm afraid, my last.

What mixed reviews! We enjoyed our visit here on a sunny day by the lake. The car park is owned by Bristol Water Company I think so it's not down to the restaurant plus the staff were very welcoming and polite. The fish and chips (or in my case scampi and chips) were good and let's face it wherever you go it's pricey to eat out nowadays. We had a pleasant experience and I would visit again:)

I understand there is very little else in the area, that it is a pleasant location, that the fish is beer battered and a celebrity chef owns it...however the price for a family of 4 x fish meals here is getting silly. We've visited occasionally since it opened...maybe 3/4 times a year. When it started it was higher than regular chip shop prices, but it was a decent quality even if the customer service varied a lot. Then items started becoming extra...tartare sauce...peas...etc, rather than being inclusive. More recently prices have just kept rising. In October £38 - 00 for 4x large cod & chips...then a couple of weeks ago £50 - 40 for 4 x large cod + 2 x regualr chips & 2 x large chips. The large chips added about £4, so basically this meal has increased by £8 - 40 in less than three months. I never thought I would pay over £50 mfor fish & chips! Time to look elsewhere I think as this is just trying to get the most out of customers. Interestingly, both times I went (October and January) there was virtua;l;y no one else in there on a Saturday night. so perhaps that's a message in itself!

We had been to this restaurant several times, over the years, so booked for an impromptu evening meal. It is a specialist seafood restaurant so my wife chose haddock and chips and I chose mussells. Although the fish was slightly over-cooked (not juicy), the delayed effect of my mussells was dramatic, causing Diarrhoea for the next 2 days! As I was eating them, I came across a couple of unopened ones and a rather pale coloured one, all of which I avoided - however, it only takes one. Perhaps my plate of mussells should have been checked more carefully before being served. It's the first time this has happened to me in more than 50 yrs of eating mussells - posibly just bad luck! The ambience at the restaurant and service were fine, but it will be a long time before I order mussells at any restaurant!

Have just returned from coffee at the Salt and Malt, having visited last year, to review it again, following previous problems, and hopefully add it as a lunch /coffee stop on our group cycle tours. Good points – friendly, smiley, apologetic waitress; lovely views, hot coffee. Bad points – expensive and weak coffee (£3.60 for an americano with a dash of oat milk); no mobile signal; no Wi-Fi; a curt, non-smiley, and non-apologetic manager (man on the till). Obviously, it’s not their fault about the mobile signal, but why no Wi-Fi? Transpires that there is Wi-Fi available, but they won’t give out the password, as it’s “not for public use”, so no means of using mobile phones and / or internet, which is important for many, these days. Anyway, the cyclists would never forgive me, so, for now, it remains on the blacklist, to be reviewed again, next year. Pity!

I don’t understand the hype with Salt and Malt. Maybe it’s because there’s not much else around Chew Valley Lake. Either way, every takeaway me and the Missus have had have from there has been sub-par. The chips are hard and dry. The cod batter is hard and dry. The veggie sausage is mush, coated in you guessed it… hard and dry batter. The curry sauce is wishy washy and bland. Only pro is the staff. Friendly and welcoming. Finally, don’t be fooled into paying at the pay and display if you’re only there for a takeaway - look for the 20 minute free takeaway spaces.

Visited on a Wednesday at 11:45am and requested a table for two not aware we had to book. A young man said “not really” then an older lady who didn’t even make eye contact just barked “no” at us and walked off. It wasn’t busy, the restaurant was half empty and I understand they will have had reservations but not to even look at the system or let us know what time a table may become free, or how long until one of the many free tables would be occupied. I just found the whole interaction rude and unfriendly. No effort whatsoever was made to even attempt to accommodate us. After the lady walked off and just left us standing there the young man was left looking a bit awkward and didn’t know what to say. I would have booked in and returned another day if they asked. I won’t bother in the future, I don’t want to go somewhere with rude staff. Anyway we left and had a lovely meal at the Blue Bowl instead highly recommended.

I had already planned to cycle from Bristol with several friends. Fortunately the evening before I checked Trip Advisor and saw that the chips were cooked in the same oil as the sausages. I thought "that can't be true", because a) I'd eaten there in the summer id been told the opposite, and b) the last time I had this problem was about 1998. I kept my fingers crossed that I'd be able to eat some chips with my mates, but once there, the woman on the till unapologetically told me that everything was cooked in the same oil. Great. I'd cycled all the way there, brought 7 friends with me who all bought their custom, but there was nothing that was even vegetarian, let alone vegan. I might understand if this was an independent restaurant, but it's part of a chain with one in the centre of Bristol (where I've been told the chips are cooked separately but now I'm not so sure) so not quite sure how they've managed to get away without a vegan offering for quite so long in the vegan capital of the UK.

They have changed the chips and are horrible (mushy and had loads of little bits). I was particularly looking forward to the GF battered sausage,,,,very disappointing, it was tiny and didn’t think much of it, especially when you look at the price. I can get high end pack of 6 GF sausages for £2.20 and twice the size. Also had the curry sauce as you don’t usually get GF curry sauce, thick and tasteless. All in all, won’t be going back and will not be recommending anymore. Sorry to those previously who I recommended Salt and Malt too.

I enjoyed the afternoon out with my mother, sat on the terrace in the sun and the Bristol IPA beer was spectacular. But the fish and chips really was poor... thick and hard batter like it had been fried twice or more... wet fish inside next to a glistening slimy skin. I for one prefer fish skinned and being from Whitby, our family know what good (and simple) fish and chips is. Then the ‘mushy peas’. Not sure what those were that arrived but definitely not mushy peas. More like regular peas that had been punched. Alas, I won’t go back for the food, but perhaps I will for the beer!

Having heard such good things about Salt and Malt, we just had to try it.The signs were good. A mile long queue for a start. We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to queue for 40 minutes, using that time to soak up the wonderful ambience of the waterside location. The time went so quickly. Then, once we we in the presence of one the 'chefs'? and after being given the choice of so many wonderful dishes, we were given another opportunity to soak up more of the atmosphere (literally) whilst we waited to be given the honour of collecting our chosen dish.We didn't have to wait long. Less than an hour in fact.As I opened the wondrous box of 'fish 'n' chips', it looked like a veritable treasure chest of edible bounty. The chips were an original twist on the standard raw potato and I can see that this idea of cutting potato into strips and chucking them into hot oil could catch on.The fish was coated in a starchy substance, which once fried became a different colour. It had the unique ability to retain a good amount of the frying oil too, so no need for a drink to go with your dish. Genius. After two or three minutes, we decided that the small amount we had managed to consume had been quite enough. I'm sure that it is an acquired taste, but my taste buds are far too common. They are used to the raw variety of potato, not this new fangled way of presenting them.I must have been excited about the prospect of just being here and immersing myself in the whole 'Salt&Malt philosophy, because I suddenly realised there was a large, warm damp patch on my lap.Luckily, I quickly realised it was a pool of greasy oil that had spilled from the fish 'batter' and through the box.Lucky me, a permanent reminder of my visit.I don't think would visit again, it's just too much excitement for us.

We had to wait a short time for our order as we were having battered halloumi & chips, but when we got it, wow it was worth the short wait. The place itself is super clean, they seem to have avery good handle on the covid management stuff. The chips are absolutely bang fresh, very crispy (just as I like them) and there were 3 large pieces of battered halloumi, all served in a cardboard box, which it filled. Be warned the portions are HUGE! We sat in the car and ate this delicious meal as we looked out across the lake, before walking it off in the beautiful setting of Chew Valley. Cannot fault this 5 star chippy!

We picked this location over the Bristol branch, because of the lovely pictures I had seen of the Lake, and when we arrived the location didn’t disappoint. The food was lovely, I had scampi and my husband had the cod. Not at all greasy, as it it can be in fish and chip shops, we also had a portion of curry sauce, and some lovely sour dough bread and butter, and finished off with a couple of scoops of ice cream, and then a very good cappuccino. With a pint and a half of coke, our bill was just under £40.00 which I thought was reasonable, as you couldn’t fault the food. You are given 1 and a half hours for your table, which was plenty, but it’s best to book, or you might not get a table. Take away is also available, and a small hatch for take away coffees, cakes etc. We will definitely be returning, next time when it’s not raining, so we can have a stroll round the lake.

Salt and Malt is, or was, the height of fish and chips quality in the West Country and this has been our experience since the Take-away was established. Sadly the decline is more noticable. Perhaps our mistake was to order in advance for collection. The food had obviuosly been cooked well in advance of the collection rime. The lemon segement was hotter than the fish!! Great spot to stop and have a chippy tea, we had chips twice during our stay, social distancing markers and queuing system safe, food is fresh and good portions, nice venue, no tables outside but areas where you can sit outside

Staying locally at a caravan site, we were recommended to get a takeaway. There are three guys, one takes the money, one cooks, one wraps. One fish was OK, the other was two small fish battered together. Chips weren’t at all fresh.

This visit was during peak time, lunch and on a Saturday.Very busy, queuing system in place, one person in, then one person in to collect their food etc, so a waiting time of half an hour due to the safety procedures.Reasonably priced for what was very enjoyable large cod and chips, chosen from good variety menu. The restaurant that adjoins the takeaway was also open and busy but not the lengthy queues.Plenty of grass/open areas to sit and eat and to take in the fresh air looking out towards the lake.

We were recommended to try this place, although more expensive we bought 2 large fish and chips. We were disappointed in what we had, the Batter on the fish was hard and had been overcooked, also the chips were not much better. All looked nice until we bit into it. We should have checked latest reviews before coming.

Outstanding food which admittedly isn't the cheapest but you get what you pay for. Highly recommend Cod, melts in the mouth and has the crispiest gluten free batter.

Great fish and chips, but meal was somewhat spoilt by the 1.5 hour wait to be served. But was worth the wait in the end.

Really enjoyed the fish and chips here. Everything tasted fresh and light, not the usual greasy fish and chips. The view if the lake was nice and service excellent.

My wife and I enjoyed a very good meal of cod, chips and peas, with a shared side salad, and I finished with a coffee and delicious carrot cake. The service was good and the surroundings were clean and bright and we will certainly visit again.

We have visited Salt & Malt a few times a year since it first opened. At the beginning the food was great and cod and chips were delicious- certainly a cut above the rest. However things have gradually got worse and we have been very disappointed. We had take away cod and chips today at around 12.45. Everything was overcooked and they have gone for quantity over quality. Far too many chips for example. The cod was very dry and a lot of it was inedible.

Batter hard and had charred taste. We had large cod and large haddock and both pieces had been overcooked. We should have checked latest reviews before coming.

After reading the previous negative reviews I wasn’t to sure about visiting Salt and Malt but decided to make up my own mind.Staff friendly and helpful regarding entering the takeaway, paying and shared a friendly chit chat. The chips were cooked fresh so while I waited I ordered a coffee at the cafe window outside. I order two portions of small cod and chips. It contained two pieces of fish in each box so four in total. The fish was ok maybe not the best I’ve ever eaten. I don’t like skin on my fish and I think as the fish was thinner as it was a small fish I ordered, to cook the batter thoroughly the fish was slightly over cooked but it was still edible. Now the chips these were the best I’ve eaten in a very long time and deserve 10/10. Cooked to perfection and not greasy. The outside of the chip was crisp, not soggy and no black bits and delicious. There was no waiting I went straight in at around 2.30pm. Huge portions even though it was a small portion. Give them a try you’ll love them.

Even for social distancing the wait of an hour in the queue was far too long. The fish and chips were below average and over priced! Small pieces of scraggy cod!! Only thing of value on the menu is the children’s food. Not recommended!

After waiting for 35 minutes in our socially distanced queue we were served 3 portions of fish and chips. The fish was over-cooked, the batter hard and the fish tasted off making all 3 portions inedible. On the basis we were not prepared to wait another 35 minutes to return it and complain we went hungry and very dissatisfied.

Without a doubt the best Take away Fish and Chips I have ever had!! My background is in catering....and the one thing I cannot understand is why a fish and chip shop makes such an effort in making the fish and chips crispy on the outside and then packages it in polystyrene or cardboard or paper which causes it to go soggy! The answer is here ...... your meal is packaged in cardboard but between the food and the cardboard is a little wax paper layer, which stops the food going soggy...Just Great!

Excellent! Lovely hot day-we arrived Thurs just before opening time 12noon. Managed to find parking( machine not working-usually £2.20!) Queue for take away( cafe closed) not too bad considering car park busy & restricted serving rules due to Covid. Shade umbrellas up really helped whilst waiting. Fish & chips was excellent-not at all greasy, light crispy batter, & best chips I’ve had for ages-true restaurant quality! Not overly expensive (£8.50 each) & ample portion size-I couldn’t finish all my chips. Good provision of waste bins provided by cafe as well as from Bristol Water Board who operate carpark. This really helps to keep area rubbish free. There’s work of some kind going on in the car park but it doesn’t really spoil what is a lovely area with nice views over the Lake. Good place for a stroll around after to burn off some calories ( if only we had done it!)

Sweltering hot at the lake today, but what could be better than GF cod and chips in the shade. Fish was fresh as you like, coated in a crisp batter. Thick cut chips, peas and chip shop curry sauce. Great effort by the Salt and Malt to provide ample shade for the queuing customers.

Paid a very disappointing visit to Salt & Malt at Chew Valley Lake today to same the famous fish and chips for the first time. The queing system was set out very well but the quality of the food was shocking. I order large cod and chips. The size of the cod was very small. I would hate to see the size of the standard cod if this was considered as large. The cod was very dry and the batter was extremely chewy. It seems it had either been over cooked or left in the hot cupboard much longer than it should. It definitely wasnt cooked fresh. Very sad to say I wont be visiting Salf & Malt again.

So looking forward to fish and chips after the lockdown eased. Was dry, small and tasteless. Such a disappointment. We have had poor quality food here before. It’s very hit and miss. Has happened once too often to go back again.

Beautiful location, we visited in the evening but can imaging that day time is glorious and lovely food is a bonus. I don’t usually eat the batter but did here and chips were great

I’ve been looking forward to coming here for some time. I wish I’d never bothered. The portions were frankly pathetic for the price you pay. Cod and chips which was the size of a seniors meal was £12. The chips could literally be counted on two hands, as for the fish.......poorSo in summary, it feels as if the proprietor is looking to make too much money. I felt completely ripped off

Appalled to be honest. Meant to be one of the best in Bristol? Chips were over cooked and rank, fish was tiny and was mostly batter, curry sauce had a horrible taste. The only good thing was the crushed peas and the 2 cans of coke. AVOID. My local chippy is 100 times better and cheaper. This was Around £22 for 2 take away.

Went there on a very windy wet day. Great view over the lake, specially when the sun came out. Lovely to see plenty of dogs enjoying a walk. Restaurant is relaxed and friendly. I had a very nice fish cake with just the right amount of chips. Friends had the fish and chips, good portion size, not too overwhelming and enjoyable to eat. Friendly staff.

Actually there is much more than this place to fish and chips with a stunning atmosphere and views, friendly helpful staff and lovely fish (as well as a few other things for the non fish eaters.I have over the last few years rather gone off fish and chips because it is so often (whether in pubs or from the chippy) oily with vast amounts of batter concealing a thin strip of fish. None of that here; fantastic fish in thin crispy batter with great chips. Only very minor criticism - I would have liked a rather bigger portion to tartare sauce.

Decidedly average this visit. Unfortunately while the service was not bad it was neither great. The food verged on the same, lots to do but be worth it when it is.

Exquisite mushy peas! Lovely location and great staff as well. I must say the mushy peas are the highlight of this takeaway for me. I love the chips too. Being by the lake this is such a nice place to get food on a nice summers day, especially with a nice cup of mushy peas. If you go here you must try the mushy peas! EXQUISITE mushy peas.

Pricing good and service was friendly. In terms of food the chips were excellent and the fish on par with any other good fish and chip shop. Extras such as mayo and ketchup were free which is appreciated. Four stars.

I don't know how previous reviews were so positive, the fish itself was dry and chewy, the batter was soggy and had an odd texture. The chips were also soggy. I have had chips here before and they were awfully soggy. Peasedown deserves better.

Had to wait almost 2 hours for a driver and got the food later and most of it was cold and didn’t get any sauce which I asked for
