Salt and Vinegar in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

came in a few days ago and the fish and chips were lovely believe it or not its probably the best one i’ve had in ages

£5 for large chips. A joke. Soggy chips and overpriced. Wish I never bothered. No wonder people at home nowadays.

Love going in here....food is great and friendly efficient staff...Mary is a star...bubbly and welcoming nothing to not like here, good prices, excellent choices on the menu, great fish and chips, the batter especially nice and always stays crisp when you get it home. Chips were great, but the fish batter was so bad, it was either fried In very old oil or the batter was off, it was bitter and not crunchy unfortunately, it was pretty soggy. The fish itself was decent. Staff was nice though. The ketchup in the sachet tasted horrible as well. This review is solely based on the batter and the way the fish was cooked.

I turned up 10 minutes before they closed and the nice lady cooked a lovely bit of cod for me was really good would definitely use again

Absolutely shocking! The food this place was awful. Dry overcooked chicken thrown in a bun. Chips were greasy and weird tasting. Not even offered salt & vinegar ironically. When asked for sauce for the burgers they wanted to charge us an extra 80p on top of the £27 we had just paid. Over cooked over priced. We don’t mind paying for quality food but this was dreadful. Never again!!

Slightly over priced but it is by the harbour. Chips were nice and the fish was as well. Staff seem to struggle with English a little Would we come again? Yes

We are across the border from Devon, enjoying a family week away in Cornwall. We visited Falmouth yesterday (7.5.24) for a few hours and my son was hungry so he popped in to this place for cheesy chips. How he wished he didn't. I'm going by tasting his chips and I can say with all honesty that they tasted like left over chips from the previous day, reheated in the fryer. They looked awful, tasted awful and for a supposed large portion, at £6.50 they were a rip off. There's no way what he had was large. If it was then I'd not like to see the small sized portion. I imagine the chips would come in a match box! Oh and to add to the horrid food experience, my son found what seemed to be a thin piece of plastic or fish skin in with his chips. We couldn't quite work it out. Honestly, by far, the worst chips I've personally tasted. My son said the man who served him was not very welcoming either. My mom used to work in Chippies when I was a lad and I've been living on this planet for long enough to tell good chips from bad. What my son had was disgusting. I just wish I took a picture of the rubbery, dry, shriveled mess that he was served up. Advice to owner: maybe change your oil more regularly. In fact, pack up and hand the keys of the establishment over to someone who cares about what they serve up. I wouldn't be at all surprised if my son was served up left over chips from the previous day. They were that bad! The below 4 star ratings say it all! I'm shocked at the good reviews for this place. Must be people who can't tell a good meal from bad!

Not worth the money. The fish didn't look or taste like cod. Over cooked, dry chips. Very disappointed.

Stopped by around 3 in the afternoon for 2x fish and chips. Really tasty, freshly cooked and priced ok. Recommend.

Have been twice now but won't be going back both times chips have been quite undercooked. Fish is ok size but little dry. If you do go would recommend burger on its own without the solid chips

They don't have Gluten Free options beyond Chips, not sure why the rest of the reviews are talking about gluten-free fish, they don't do it

If I could rate any less than one star I would. Ordered online via their website. Took an hour to arrive. Tried to call the shop a few times and it was a dead line. Tried WhatsApp and Facebook messenger no response. The chips were so soggy and greasy they were like mush. The chicken burger made us laugh… came without any garnish inside at all and it was so tough and dry. The chicken nuggets were chewy and overcooked. The battered sausage was okay but soggy. The only thing we actually ate was the fried chicken it was slightly overcooked and dry but the flavour was there. Mozzarella sticks were £5.50 for four and they were tiny and thin they actually tasted alright I assume they are from frozen however one contained no cheese at all just an empty shell. Due to this awful experience we will never order from this place again.

The service man does a very high quality job and the fish chips are delicious and the presentation is perfect. This is the best fish and chips place in town.

The negative reviews do not match the offer that we have eaten here again and again in 3 weeks. Fish and other products and the chips in various variations were among the best on our trip! The multilingual tenant/owner was also exemplary in his friendly manner! When we come back to Falmouth we know where to eat!

Ordered a burger. It was so bad, literally just a burger in a bun. No garnish, no sauce. Burger was crunchy and clearly just reheated or frozen.

Staff can't read instructions call them selfs salt and vinegar yet can't seem to use it yet again my cooking instructions was ignored can't even call them as there number is wrong

Visited for the first time, grabbed some chips and a couple of sausages. The staff were great and very welcoming. The food was spot on and we will definitely be returning.

Just Been to Falmouth, ended up in Salt & Vinegar for lunch. Omg, it was well worth the wait. It was only less than 10 minutes, but it was beautiful fish & Chips. Thankyou Marco & the staff for a great lunch

Couldn't fault them. Just wanted some good old fashioned fish and chips and these certainly delivered.Cooked to order, tasted fantastic and sat on Falmouth Pier to eat them. Perfect.

Went in to get some fish and chips with my girlfriend and was welcomed by the staff having a full blown argument behind the counter! I had to remind the man twice what I had ordered and after waiting a while for the food I was heavily disappointed to discover that the chips were tasteless and the fish was soggy. I would agree with a previous review which said “the food was anaemic”. To top it off, it was incredibly overpriced for the quality of the food. I wouldn’t even give my dog this food to be honest.

There was mould in the cheese on my chips, wont be returning.

Fast delivery via online, reasonable price, would use again

Didn't get my order but paid for it!!! Don't know what happened but didn't get an apology. Oh well I'll know not to order online to them again that's a meal for three and now hungry .not their fault I suppose but get a different delivery company

We always get great service and they always give us extra cod bites great fish and chips.

Just had a shared fish and chips from S&V which we ate in McCouls the pub on the corner with a pint of Guinness for me and a mulled cider for my wife. Fresh cooked home made chips and fresh fried fish. Delicious highly recommended. Definitely with a Guinness. 👍😊

The fish was so good and really well cooked, delicious. The chips looked anaemic but we’re actually ok. Son’s burger was red in the middle and he couldn’t eat it (but we did tell him you don’t go to a fish and chip shop for a burger). Hate having to pay £1 for Heinz tartare sauce from a fish and chip restaurant when it would so easy to make fresh.

Normally have no issues, waited over 2hrs for delivery, when I called was told to ‘be patient’. Drove down to pick up fresh, very rude staff that told me to go to somewhere next time, then shouted it at me when I left. Didn’t offer to refund the delivery charge after I had to drive to collect the food fresh

Freshly made, friendly service. Peri peri cheesy fries with a side of cod 😂 The other order was jumbo sausage and more of the same fries.

Awful. Patties burnt straight though, missed half the toppings we paid extra for, tiny salad tomato’s in the burger, food was cold & when I phoned up to see if there would be a resolution I was told there was nothing they could do as they’re too busy tonight. Don’t waste your money

Chef appeared to want to memorise orders instead of reading tickets, resulting in our order being entirely wrong. Chips were dry and fish was greasy, and very little salt and vinegar despite the name of this place. Lady serving at the counter was very nice and helpful.

Ate inside , order for four of us was served in very good time . We had cod and chips , a halumi burger and a child's nuggets and chips . All our food was cooked to high standard and our cod and chips was to die for ! , light golden batter , fresh white fish and a great size and what's more is a great pice and friendly staff ! keep it up guys .

Awful customer service. Waited over 1hr 20m for an order, called up twice (second time was 10 minutes before closing time because it had still not arrived) and was met with attitude both times. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Friendly and welcoming staff. Sat in. A spontaneous visit snd met with Excellent service. Must importantly they serve gluten free fish and chips; haddock wax cooked to perfection. Good value for money

Great gluten free fish and chips - big portions

For Christ sake save your money and go somewhere else, ordered sausage and chips, sausage and cheesey paprika chips, large mushy peas twice and a can of rio. The sausages were awful, the batter was chewy, and they were barely drained, the chips were chewy and had been sat a while. The mushy peas? Stone cold and absolutely vile. The drink? Nowhere to be seen, an absolute waste of £25 and I would advise nobody to go to this place.

Got the order wrong rock hard battered sausage cold mushy peas forgot the drinks and cost 25 pounds owners all stood in the food preparation area having a chat, order also not ready on time

I have been here a few times, but yesterday I bought some chips and they were by far the worst chips I have ever had in 50 years of chip eating. They were like cardboard! Sort it out or this will be another failed venture.

Didn't have sides so substituted for fries. Fish cake was in edible looked terrible full of scrap fish and thick greasy batter. Looked like it had been stood on the floor.

Had to wait almost 2 hours for a missing item from order. Chips were barely seasoned and rude staff on phone and live chat kept hanging up. Dreadful!

Worst service ever-don’t order from this company. Took an hour to arrive and they forgot an item, contacted them-they said they were sorting it and would be on the way soon. Contacted again 30 minutes later as still no sign of missing item. They then said the same thing. I called up and after many attempts they told me that they had only just been told about the missing item(we had spoken to someone through their website the first two times which they run so I hardly see this as plausible). When asked the lady on the phone told me that they would send the item. I asked when-she couldn’t give me an answer. She was also quite rude. Finally received the chips another hour later. All in all waited 2 hours 30 minutes.

Gone down hill, when it first opened it was really good, soggy n greasy now and bellyache chips, not cooked properly. Has it changed hands? Seems to be a theme around here

Fish & chips taste great. Chips are nice and dry not covered in grease. Cod had lovely crisp batter, steaming hot fish. Reasonable sized standard portions. Served in cardboard box easy to recycle no waste paper

The best Fish & Chips in Falmouth

Over priced and underwhelmed Popped in to grab some dinner for my son and i after work. Fast service however overcharged by over 15% and only rectified when challenged Sausage in batter so hard you could bang nails in with it. I know the price of potatoes has gone up but were left completely underwhelmed by the portion sizes. Asked if wanted salt and vinegar but none added. Lumpy Curry sauce from a packet mix. Guys if you want to charge a premium price you need to supply a premium product. Will stick to harbour lights along the road in future.

Relatively small shop, but, extremely clean, and tidy. Food cooked to order, and plentiful. Service provided by cheerful personnel.

A great portion of chips piping hot and we could eat in which was nice as it was pouring with rain outside.

Imagine calling your take away “Salt and Vinegar” and then not putting either of those things on your chips. Waited over an hour for bland anaemic chips that tasted like cardboard. We were at work so didn’t have access to condiments. Needless to say they mostly went in the bin. Dessert was ok

Some of the best fish and chips I haver ever had

Bought chips from there. Searching for halal fish and chips can be difficult outside the major cities. The fish could be coated in beer batter. You pass that level. Then you have to find out if the fish is fried in the same oil as other meat products. Many shops fry their battered sausages in the same oil. Lastly even the chips could be fried in beef drippings. So it can be a bit difficult to find the right place. When I called salt and vinegar up and started asking these questions, he simplified it for me and said, 'just ask for halal mate.' Oh what a relief

Fish was ok , but chips awful, not fresh , chewy my daughter described it as like eating polystyrene, service was fine ..maybe an off day

Don’t normally leave reviews but this place is deffo worth one. Absolutely beautiful food. Clean, fresh, reasonably priced and friendly staff. I honestly have not had fish and chips as nice ever. I haven’t even left the restaurant before I’m putting in my review! If you are in the area this place is definitely worth a visit.

Just sat on the Pier finishing our fish and Chips. Great food, great prices, very friendly staff and catering for Gluten Free makes things so much easier for us

The chips taste like rubber absutley disgusting

It may look like your average neighborhood fish and chips joint, but Salt & vinegar is anything but! I wandered in with two friends on a Friday night, and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff and incredibly delicious fish and burger. The shop was filling up quickly (it was almost 7:00 pm) but we managed to snag a table.

Service was excellent food was amazing gluten free options were just as they said very happy family today shame we live so far away .Thankyou

Worst chips we've ever had, they were totally inedible. Complained to the girl behind the counter and she thought it was highly amusing. Well we weren't amused. I recommend avoiding this one star establishment.

Super fish and chips from here freshly cooked to order, crispy, well packaged and with free tartare sauce and wedge of fresh lemon. The pier opposite the shop has many benches with a fine view to enjoy your takeaway fish supper, or there's space to eat in.

Chips were nice but think I must have chosen poorly with the fish (haddock) it was suspiciously uniform in size and no where near fresh. Batter undercooked and soggy. Not what you expect from sea side fish and chips. Mushy peas where very nice. Maybe the cod is better?

Nice fish and chips, good takeout quality and not greasy like some other competitors. Decided to try a beef burger instead on another visit but overcooked and dry to eat. Disappointed with this product and would not try again.
