Probably the worst afternoon tea that I've ever experienced and particularly disappointing as we were celebrating Father's Day. Despite booking in advance, as deemed essential on the website, the staff's reception would suggest that we were not expected. A tray with cheap crockery, cutlery and paper napkins was brought to the table and left for us to set the table ourselves; one saucer was cracked and the teaspoons did not match. The sandwiches were extremely basic (one had a lettuce leaf and a few chunks of cucumber, the scones were dry and did not taste fresh, there was one small macaron each and 6 small (2 each) commercially produced Danish pastries which may well have been left over from the breakfast service. No cakes were served. In addition, another table in the conservatory had dirty dishes when we arrived and was left uncleared during our entire visit and the toilet had no paper. I had been for afternoon tea spa day a few years ago and couldn't believe the drop in standards. Would not return.

After a long drive, we wanted to have a coffee and a scone plus bring our friendly but excitable springer, the staff weren’t phased and provided us with very comfortable seating area, brought along lovely scones cream and jam, made a big fuss of the dog. We returned later and had our tea including the most fantastic warm chocolate brownie sundae

We were staying at the hotel and dinner was included but we are given options to choose off a menu and some dishes had supplementary prices to add on; makes sense for steak etc but not quite sure why a burger had a surcharge? The service was friendly and food served fast. Lovely presentation and very tasty. We had the pork and the duck, cheesecake and croissant bread and butter pudding. All delicious! The only negative I'd say is that when staying in the hotel you can't charge to your room, and this is OK if people are told when being seated rather than being chased at the end! Whether staying at the hotel it visiting Drymen the restaurant is worth a visit.

Tweede avond, wederom voortreffelijk gegeten.

The dinner food served here is exceptional. The menu changes monthly depending on what products are in season/available to locally source. Portion sizes are just right, and the dishes are packed with flavour and well presented. Main meals are fairly priced too considering they are fresh and homemade. Wish I had taken pictures to show how great this meal was. I will definitely return!

Redelijk groot restaurant. Menukaart is niet heel uitgebreid maar wel voldoende variatie. Eerst een lekkere amuse daarna hebben we een voorgerecht van eend gegeten. Was prima voorgerecht. Daarna zalm gegeten. Prima bereid met voldoende groenten. Naast het eten heerlijke wijn gedronken. De huiswijn Sauvignon Blanc was heel lekker. Tot slot cheescake en koffie. Prima gegeten. De bediening was niet heel erg accuraat maar wel vriendelijk.

I desparately wanted to be able to say we had a great experience here, but the truth was much the opposite. We made a reservation for the restaurant at the adjoining hotel reception after the receptionist asked us if we would like to eat there (we weren't bothered, but since she'd asked we thought "why not?"). She warned that it was busy but there was a slot available at 8:30pm so we took it. Fast forward to 8:30pm and we dutifully arrived to be seated. A couple in front of us was exchanging cross words with the waiter after they had been kept waiting since their reservation at 8:00pm. We should have known then and there that there was going to be trouble! The odd thing was that there were still empty tables in the restaurant, so it definitely wasn't at full seating capacity. We were all told to take a seat inside the bar area with menus and we would be called upon for a table when one was available. After waiting 30 minutes or so, we decided to abandon our booking and try our luck at one of the restaurants 5 minutes walk up the road. As we were handing our menus back in and about to explain, we were met with "table for 2 was it?". Surprised at the sudden change of fortune, we went ahead and followed the waitress in to a table. We were given menus (again) and told that our drinks orders would be taken in a few minutes. Fast forward 5 minutes and, with no drinks orders taken, imagine our horror when the couple that had been waiting since 8:00 were led in to sit down at the table right next to us. How embarrassing! The gentleman then proceeded to demand the contact details of the manager from the waitress. When she had gone, there was too much of a tense mood to stick around so we decided to abandon the restaurant and try the ones up the road. Unfortunately it had just past 9:30pm at that point and most of the kitchens had closed. We ended up buying some food from the Spar shop to take back to the privacy of our own room. To be fair to the hotel, they did offer us a free bottle of prosecco as means of an apology which we did accept. Nevertheless, we would have much rather appreciated honesty from the outset on how overrun/understaffed they were that evening so we could have arranged a sit-down meal elsewhere. It's a shame as it was the one negative experience during an otherwise incredible experience in a beautiful part of the country. Needless to say, we'll try staying somewhere else on our next visit. One final footnote: the menu lists 'Salmon' as one of the options, but doesn't explicitly state that it's Scottish. If it is then they should really try to clarify this on the menu!

We went for dinner and both ordered the steak pie. Bit of a disappointment, the meat was a bit chewy, puff pastry had clearly been sitting a while and heated up. Chips were plenyful and piping hot but frozen, would've been nice to serve "real" chips. Best thing of that dish was the vegetables, all fresh and cooked well.Vanilla cheesecake with berries was our choice for desert and was the saving grace of the meal. Perfection on a plate, well presented and tasted devine.Service was excellent from staff.

Being guests at the Buchanan Arms Hotel we ate at Salmon Leap Restaurant four nights running. The food was good and the staff were pleasant and helpful. Perhaps I should add that on the Tuesday evening for some reason which we were not privy to the service was awful and having waited so long for our meal we actually left without ordering a dessert. I am saddened to have to include that comment because the other three evenings were as one would have expected. Just a slight note of caution though, there is not much choice for vegetarians. The salmon is fantastic and well worth a visit for that alone.

It is a well visited restaurant, and this causes its own problems. Our second night here the staff seemed disorganised with the tables not properly laid with butter, iced water etc. The chicken terrine on the second night was nothing special, and the chocolate tart was disappointing. But we were so impressed with the food & service, that we decided to return the second night & weren't disappointed. It was the Daily Change Menu (2 courses for £22), and tried different items from each of starters, mains and desserts. As the name implies, the menu changes daily, which is good, especially if you are staying several days or longer. This is the third time in over a year we have eaten here & it continues to impress. When questioned the staff in the restaurant were less than helpful saying it was not their fault it had changed within 24 hours. This was disappointing as the menu offered was 2 or 3 courses for a specified rate. The evening was not getting off to a good start! We did order from the menu we were given and although the food was delicious we were all disappointed at being misled! Would we return... NO. If a company cannot be up front and show some customer service when clearly they could not deliver what was booked I would not support them in the future. I appreciate the contents of the menu could vary on a daily basis but when an offer is booked I cannot understand why that was not honoured on arrival.

We went to the Salmon leap because it seemed to have a veggie dish that appeared to be vegan from the description on the menu posted outside. The person who greeted us told us that even the dishes marked V for vegetarian were probably made with chicken stock. I was taken aback, but another member of staff corrected her, so we sat down. That was our mistake, we should have left.I was told I could not have the garlic bread as it was made with butter. I asked if it could be made with olive oil instead as they seemed to have some bread being put on tables. I was told no, a sure sign that all the food is delivered by van and microwaved. Sure enough my brochette was a soggy lump of over heated tomato pulp and bad baguette. My main came with the garlic bread I could not eat and my partners meal came with the veg having been cooked in butter and drained, and the service was appalling too, we were ignored and had to correct the bill. Never eat here.

I write solely in relation to the Salmon Leap Restaurant which serves the hotel, not in relation to the rooms or other facilities. Please, avoid the restaurant at all costs. This area is a wonderful area of the world and I urge everyone to come to the town of Drymen and surrounding towns on the quieter side of Loch Lomond. The shores at this side are a lot quieter than those at the likes of Balloch and Luss, and the scenery is unrivalled. We spent a fantastic summer day with our dogs here; until we decided to stop for Sunday lunch in the Salmon Leap.Appalling. Shop-bought. Over-priced. Rubbish. We were sat in the conservatory area of the bar, which judging by the photos on Best Western's website, has not seen a lick of paint (or indeed a window cleaner) since the last photo shoot in 2010. The atmosphere was eerie, quiet and only interrupted by a compilation of Michael Buble's greatest hits intertwined with 80's love power ballads. We should have known right there to head back to the car and drive on to Balloch for food, but for reasons we can only regret, we opted to stay. The starters arrived after only a short period of time (microwaves are very efficient nowadays) and smiles suddenly disappeared. Tinned soup, shop bought pate and garlic bread slices which transfer you to another place- no, not Venice, Rome or Milan; try Tesco or Asda. Dreadful. In fact we could only laugh at the "swooshed" balsamic drizzle which accompanied the pate; who was the "chef" trying to kid?And main courses; dear oh dear, Best Western, what has happened? Looking at the menu, we noticed that penne pasta with a tomato, chilli and aubergine sauce was one option, whilst a penne pasta dish with chargrilled chicken was another option. My companions order the penne pasta with tomato sauce, but asked if it would be possible to add the chargrilled chicken to the dish. The "chef" must have been quaking in his boots- this may have been the most difficult act of culinary skill he has practiced since that particularly tricky day in 2011 when the ring pull broke on one of the cans. True enough, it was simply appalling. One set of pasta heated in the microwave, served with a chargilled chicken piece which had been defrosted and still tasted of the originally sauce packet it was originally intended to be served with when it was prepared in a factory a few weeks earlier. And Sunday "roast" beef; I think trading standards might need to look into this one as the only people being roasted here are the absolute suckers like myself paying £12 for the microwave boil in a bag style slices which the Salmon Leap tries to pass off as "beef in gravy". Frankly, it would have been funny had it not been so expensive. Honestly, this was the kind of beef you were once served for school lunch before laws made it illegal to serve such low quality food to young children. The accompanying veg did bring back fond memories of Mediterranean holidays however; I'm pretty sure it’s the same stuff served on airlines... Following on from the penne pasta debacle, one further point to note. One of our party asked for chips instead of the stated mash for his beef. A simple enough request. But no, for some unknown reason this was not possible. Instead, he could have the chips as a side order and pay for the privilege (again, the fool decided to pay the same amount for a small portion of frozen chips as he could have bought a bag for in the nearest supermarket!). In an act of irony, the waitress then asked "so you have a portion of chips on the side, do you still want the mash?". Well, considering he had no option since he had already paid for it, he practically insisted upon it (had he not, the chef may have needed some annual leave to cope with the stress of having to put some thought into the plates of food being served). The service was, unfortunately, also poor. The staff were uninterested and we were treated almost like an inconvenience. We had to request cutlery for all of our courses. There were also no condiments on the table, and by the time the requested vinegar arrived, our party had decided that they had had enough of the pitiful offerings. The only saving grace was the young male waiter who informed us that he had only started the previous week; when we informed him at the end that the food was simply terrible, he could only let out a sigh and apologise. This was laughable. But at £130 odd for 6 people having two courses with one drink each, it was a very expensive laugh at that. The fact that it was Father's Day and that this was intended as a treat to my father probably has left the poor guy worried that we are about to send him off to Dignitas for his 60th birthday...Please avoid.

After remortgaging the house we decided to get some lunch at the Snack Stop. We had lots of money in the bank and decided to use as much as possible. Suffice to say we weren’t let down. Upshot is if you want a ridiculously expensive lunch on paper plates and cardboard cutlery then this is the place for you. £6.50 for a box of 6 sad looking nuggets , £9.99 for a baked potato with 2 fillings. Keep driving past so your kids will get some Christmas presents this year.
