Stopped off here for lunch . The food was great and the coffee and cake excellent . It’s clean and the service was efficient. Just what we needed before a long drive up the West Coast .

You sometimes need to travel huge distances in this part of the world if you want a decent meal. Not so if you’re in Ardnamurchan, just head to The Salen. Recently changed from a hotel to a cafe/ restaurant. It’s a brilliantly located hostelry run by a charming couple with two equally charming Spaniels. The menu is simple classics done well and reasonably priced. I think I ate there most days during my week in Gorteneorn.

We stayed locally to this hotel and drove by a few times but weren’t sure it was dog friendly (it looks so lovely from the outside!). We called in for lunch one day and were pleasantly surprised to see it was dog friendly and even has its own gorgeous pub pooch, Basil. My husband and I both said the food was the best meal we’d had in the area (fish and chips), and we even took some cake away for dessert as they looked too delicious to say no to. Staff were so friendly and chatty; the waitress serving us couldn’t have been more helpful. We wish we had tried this place sooner in our trip as we would’ve been sure to return time and time again!

Wonderful to get out at a time when meeting friends in a restaurant is complicated by the pandemic. The Salen Hotel Restaurant has made this possible by keeping their menu restricted. However we found the menu great, the service friendly and the food and wine lovely

We were a bit disappointed by the menu as it wasn’t as varied as it appeared on the website and some of the specials had run out by the time we arrived. So my husband being vegetarian only had one choice of a curry which he said was nothing special. My pork belly was ok though a bit overdone. The staff seemed a bit disorganised and distracted even though there weren’t that many people eating. The room we ate in was rather gloomy and there wasn’t much atmosphere.

I twice attempted to use this place. phoned them to book a two night break....sorry we don't take bookings for less 3 nights. Then drove 7 hours and called from the ferry to book a table (booked a room at a nearby B&B). Told them was to arrive at 1:50pm only to be told that was too late as they stopped serving at 2pm?!?Later noticed the hotel was up for sale, not really surprised as the don't seem interested. No great loss as there are two amazing restaurants in Acharacle

Well positioned hotel bar and restaurant that has been recently refurbished by the look of it. We stopped for a drink a couple of days prior and was so taken with the place that we all decided to visit again for their bar meal selection. We thought this would be a nice place to end our holiday. We were not disappointed but half way through the meal while still eating we were told off for moving a chair for a child, l can appreciate the challenging situation we all find ourselves in but a little more privately next time perhaps, service in general apart from this was very good and the gentleman was very nice to us when it came to paying for the meal, which by the way was again very good.

We have visited before for dinner last year and had a lovely meal. This year we were keen to return. I enquired twice before we arrived about whether the hotel is open for meals and was told firmly that no, it is only open to locals due to Covid. I was told it was open for take away. When we arrived, I phoned the hotel to ask what is available for take away. No one called me back, and the hotel looked deserted during the day so I assumed it was closed to all customers. I tried calling again near the end of the week, and was told it is open, on a pot luck basis, turn up and if a table is available they will fit you in. When we arrived, we were told rather rudely that there were no tables available until 8pm, this was at 6pm We were also told that take away was not available either. This despite lots of people calling in to collect takeaway! I could see that the restaurant was nearly empty, so felt puzzled. We went in again to ask if we could sit outside when a table became free, and spoke to a member of the serving staff, who said we could come in but food would probably be some time. Once seated, we found out that only three items were on the menu! We ordered fish and chips expecting it would take an hour as indicated, but it came reasonably quickly and was edible , though disappointing. No one wore masks, either staff or customers which was surprising. No one took our contact details either. When we asked to pay, we were told that it was cash only. No one had told us this and we had seen no signs to that effect. The chef then appeared (I assume it was he, since he wore an apron) to say very rudely that he had told us it was cash only. He had done no such thing. His manner was rude and unpleasant. This was the same person who had initially told us that there would be no tables until 8pm when the restaurant was empty, and no take away either. At this stage we were literally the only people eating indoors. All other tables were not taken and the outside tables were also vacated . The only people in the pub were locals having a drink. We paid by bank transfer and left. We won't be back next year after that experience, that's for sure. I am not sure what is going on, but suspect that food sales are being kept off the books for whatever reason. Not impressive. I understand that Covid has put pressure on businesses, but there is no need to be rude and to make up the rules as they go along.

Had dinner here with the family during a recent holiday. A small menu choice but all very well cooked. We had 2 plates of prawns caught locally by one of the guys sat having a beer in the pub as we ate them!! Now that’s provenance!!Friendly proprietor who came out to speak to us and ask if we’d enjoyed our food etc. I mark the score down 1 point simply because the menu is so limited (just 4 types of pizza, prawns, lasagne and scampi on the day we visited) a few more options and it would be perfect.

We’d heard great things about Salen Hotel and had a pleasant meal there in previous years and during our recent visit to the peninsula we wanted to make a return visit. However, this time we were completely ignored... We approached the bar area to ask if there was a table available and as there was no response we sat at an unoccupied table that wasn’t reserved. The waitresses clearly saw us and served another couple who arrived after us. After waiting for maybe 20 minutes or so we decided to try somewhere else and got up to leave. As we left one of the waitresses actually went to the table and pushed in the chairs as we were passing the window. I don’t think we’ll make a return visit. The only positive I can give is that we found a wonderful restaurant a little further along the road which we will most certainly be recommending in future.

Whilst on holiday with my family in Lochaber we visited the Salen Hotel for drinks. We were impressed by the menu and decided to book a table for dinner. The hotel has a large conservatory as part of their restaurant and this is pet friendly so we could bring our dog in instead of leaving her in the car. The staff had a very easy going but proffesional approach which made us feel at ease. The food was excellent with a wide selection of local produce and seafood. They also catered well for vegatarians and the cheff even gave our dog some dog biscuits so she wasnt left out. We booked again later in our weeks stay and would totally recommend the Salen Hotel as a place to eat when you are in the area.

While staying at Mingarry Park Hotel, my partner and I went for dinner at the Salen Hotel. It’s a pleasant hotel although the food is more pub-style than restaurant. That said, it was good wholesome food and the staff were very attentive and pleasant. Its a shame that Tripadvisor only give a rating of average between poor and very good. The Salen Hotel is somewhere between but still, if you’re after honest food and nice people, it’s a decent place to go.

This is a lovely wee hotel with 2 dining areas which are both delightful to eat in. We managed to squeeze in a last minute booking for dinner on a Saturday night and were glad we chose this hotel in the area. The food is your above average pub food (special mention for the hand cut chips) and is cooked well and tasty. There are also a few specials which are available too.The service from the young guys who were waiters was very professional and polite. We had a feeling one of the waiters might have been the owner's son ... in which case what a charming young man he is. We popped in here on our way back to our holiday cottage. I ordered a special (Guinea fowl) which was excellent. My daughter had prawns- again very good. My wife had the last battered fish and my son had the child's fish finger. Weirdly, we were asked if he wanted chips, beans or peas (there was just the choice of one option) with his fish finger. This has never happened before and usually chips and peas/beans are standard in every restaurant/pub we have eaten in. The battered fish my wife had was average and overcooked- so much so that it was pretty tasteless. The service was very good and the reason I only rated the place average is due to the mixed nature of the food coming out of the kitchen.

We arrived just in time for a table before peak hours and were seated in an airy section of this charming restaurant. The menu was more or less a standard menu for this type of restaurant. My wife enjoyed the beer battered haddock fillet, but my rump steak seemed to be more cooked than fried and was not to tender.. When composing a dish like this it would have been a better choice with some veggies instead of the ordinary salad which is normally served with burgers and chips. The pepper sauce was good, and now problems to ask for extra sauce. The waiters were attentative and polite, but one of the younger female waitresses could have smiled a bit more. This restaurant will not be on my top 10 list, but still a place to eat when there aren't exactly too many restaurants in this erea.

We arrived without a reservation on the last evening of a self-catering holiday, tired and depressed because we'd just been turned away by another establishment that took one look at two pre-schoolers and one baby and decided they couldn't possibly serve us. By contrast the Salen Hotel was magical, the staff were positively pleased to see us. There was a children's menu with a picture to colour in, proper chips, interesting grown-up food for adults, and the children's desserts had so many favourite components that our expert pudding-eaters couldn't finish them. The Salen Hotel is a well modernised Victorian building overlooking the yacht anchorage at Salen on the shore of Loch Sunart. The setting is fine example of the best of west highlands scenery,N with clear blue water of the North Atlantic and mountains in the distance. It is a beautiful place and the hotel does justice to the beauty of the surroundings. You will get a warm welcome at any time of year at the Salen Hotel.the bar is cosy and there are always local characters or deep ocean ' yachties' to give character to the company. The restaurant is excellent and the food is inpretentious and locally sourced wherever possible. The service is always cheerful, disarmingly so sometimes with young people from the area. Sea food figures prominently on the menu of course. The dining room decor is simple and friendly, but quite modern in an oiled wood sort of way.Salen is a great centre for visiting some of the finest scenery in the West Highlands. Mull and its incomparable capital, Tobermoray, is only a few miles away by boat and you can get there by ferry from Oban. Loch Shiel, Castle Tioram, Loch Ailort, Glen Finnan and other famous sights of the west highlands are all nearby, but for me Salen is the gateway to one of the most fascinating geological areas in the world on Ardnamurchan Peninsula. At the West end of ''this finger into the Atlantic Ocean" are rocks that belong to other parts of geological history, volcanic eruptions and massive movements of tectonic plates. Salen's jetty Shop is a short walk from the hotel and a simply glorious place to have a fresh croissant, excellent coffee and a Sunday newspaper! I have visited that excellent shop (designed for well healed yachties) on many occasions.I can only say that a visit to Salen with its hotel, scenery and the wonderful Jetty shop is a wonderful experience. Try it!Tony Andrews

The place was lovely, the staff excellent and the food nice. Food was very fresh, nothing outstanding but nice. The staff excellent. Both nights they made room for us when fully booked. Very very quick service. Our choice of meal was on table in 10 mins. Lovely place, can't go wrong.

Lovely building great service. We came here for a drink and to play a game of pool as we were docked on the marina. Not a far walk at all from the marina. Bring a light after dark as there are no street lights.

Superb lunch in the Salen Hotel's recently refurbished restaurant! The food was excellent. The service personable, helpful and intelligent - we were in two minds about ordering a particular wine and our extremely helpful server brought a small glass for each of the party to try it! I thouroughly recommend this place.

This hotel has a stunning view from the area in front of the hotel across the harbour. We ordered a simple one course meal. Trio of cold salmon ( various smoked versions), smoked salmon linguini and pizza. All were good and were enjoyed. Service was attentive. The conservatory atmosphere helped. We had walked from the boat moored at the pontoon. The walk back in the late evening sun was delightful. Several folk were enjoying a large plateful of fish and chips which is obviously a favourite. In the past I have stayed overnight in one of the lodges. It is clean, quiet and comfortable.

Having never visited this Hotel, even having stayed just outwith the ardnamurchan peninsula for a great many years it was a very good and appealing decision to visit hear on a friday night a week past ,i was staying close by at a campsite where my Daughter, Son in law, and grandchildren were staying in a large tent and i was asked to join them for the week-end arriving after six o clock at night, we decided to dine here a very wise choice it turned out to be. Arriving about seven we were seated in main dining area a quite busy evening a lot of other diners before and after us very pleasant and responsive staff, drinks order taken followed by starters and main courses, which were all excellent in both presentation and taste and then finally make a little room for delicious pudding selection a very pleasant and relaxed dining experience one i would be very happy to repeat ....

Ate in the sunroom three times during our week in Salen, homemade carne pizza was lovely and my wife enjoyed the burger, fish and chips was average, the fish was a bit oily and broke into small pieces when trying to eat, but overall the hotel was good for a quick meal or drink. Would advise booking for evening meals as this is when it seemed to get really busy.

We wnjoyed a really nice meal here on our second night in the area. We had phoned ahead but were dining early as our boys were tired and hungry, so had the luxury of attentive service which was prompt and we enjoyed good food. It became moderately busy so although we could have eaten a dessert we didn't, this turned out to be a good decision as all of a sudden it seemed that the few waiting staff were a wee bit overwhelmed with orders etc. So getting the bill and paying for the bill took ages but we got there in the end! Food was good though.

We dropped in here for drinks only, late afternoon on a pleasant day. The hotel overlooks the loch and little marina from a high point so it's quite picturesque if you're sitting outside. Inside the bar was modern looking and furnished to a good standard. We had a good chat with the friendly young barman, but as we couldn't see much on the menu that day to tempt us we decided to eat elsewhere.

We were staying closeby the Salen Hotel at a local B&B and visited the hotel for dinner one evening. We made a reservation in the afternoon, as the young lady tending the bar advised us that even it was a Monday evening, they had two fairly large parties and a number of residents requiring dinner that evening. It was just as well we did, as when we got there, the place was pretty well full!We sat out in the sun lounge/conservatory at the front of the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. From the moment we arrived, we were given a warm welcome and at no time during the evening, were we ever hurried, even it was busy. Neither did we wait excessively long for our meals.I enjoyed a bowl of leek and potato soup and then a plate of really tasty fish (haddock) and chips, while my wife enjoyed a lovely plate of scallops and prawns. All this food was well cooked, well presented, well served and was all extremely delicious.Throughout the evening, the young staff were extremely friendly, very helpful, knowledgeable on the menu - and quite fun too. The hotel was also very good value for money, being most reasonable overall and the standard the food was extremely good. We thoroughly enjoyed it all and will certainly be back again, when next we are in the area.

We were staying in a local self-catering house nearby and decided to have a meal in the local hotel. What a great find! We liked it so much that we ate there 3 times in one week! The owner and his staff couldn't have been more welcoming. We ate in the sun room overlooking Loch Sunart. As we were checking the menu on the first night, the owner came to the table and let us know that if we were happy to wait for 15 minutes, the prawns had just been delivered from the boat.......we opted to order our meal straight away as we had young children with us but about 10 minutes later, the owner brought us a sample.....a prawn freshly cooked and steaming......20 minutes from water to table! It was so good we ordered an extra course for our meal! The food was delicious and well presented......the atmosphere in the hotel was welcoming and friendly......I would heartily recommend anyone to eat here.

Stopped here just for lunch with the family (6 of us). Found a very hospitable lady behind the bar. Relatively standard pub lunch menu at reasonable prices together with a few local specialities. Between us we tried the fish and chips, burger and chips, smoked salmon linguine and peperoni pizza. All were freshly and well prepared and obviously home cooked. Meals cam with dressed side salad and condiments. Lady behind the bar could not have been more friendly and helpful and did not seem at all worried when a couple of cyclists turned up warning of 15 more arriving in dribs and drabs for their lunch. They were also happy to prepare the linguine with the smoked salmon in cream sauce but omitting the white wine and salt. They also had a couple of well kept real ales behind the bar.

Wasn't sure what to expect with mixed reviews! What a fabulous time we've had! The rooms were clean and very comfortable! Kept period details whilst still providing modern comforts. The staff were great and knew their stuff. The food was totally amazing! Would recommend the roll mop herring and , particularly, the duck! Fabulous all round! Highly recommended! ☺

Ten years since we were last here and this lovely hotel had a nice facelift with the conservatory redone in stone/natural timber. Staff very welcoming and cheery but food " could do better" given the prices? For example "new" potatoes are just that- freshly boiled not reheated in the microwave resulting in soft squidgy, tasteless articles? Such a shame as the Dressed Crab they came with was delicious? Side salads need invigorating and portions resized? However this is a lovely hotel, stunning location, nice atmosphere and welcoming staff, it's not off the list!

We went here for an evening meal whilst on a bike trip to Ardnamurchan. My wife had the Seafood linguine which she enjoyed. I had the Spaghetti Bolognaise which was very disappointing. It tasted more like traditional mince on a bed of pasta, no real flavour, I can definitely make better myself. The lemon and lime cheescake was tasty.

The sun room extension to the front makes an great dinning area. While a soup lunch might seem standard fare, if the soup itself is good, you get a well satisfied customer.

Ate here with a small group of friends . Very quick service by pleasant staff My husband had a rump steak which he ordered medium rare and when it arrived it was tiny (5 or 6 ozs) and was well done. Probably over cooked because it was so small. I had a special. Pork fillet also overlooked and chewy all our plates were cold so the food cooled very quickly. We didn't complain and were hungry so we ate most of it Desserts were better and my chocolate dessert was very good. The cheese board was small and poor value. No attempt to explain the origin of the cheeses. We are all in the trade so really do understand the stresses and strains of selling food and the restaurant and general ambiance was very good . The chef needs to be a little more generous with his portions and to make sure the plates are really hot before playing up.

I only popped in for a short while to have a drink, check my emails on the wi-fi and check out opening times. The staff were friendly and chatty in a nice way. However, my drink wasn't hot which was a shame as it was a cold day. We did intend to go for lunch or dinner in the week however when I asked I was told it was closed apart from for residents during the week so we were unable to go.

Our first visit to Ardnamurchan and the Salen Hotel. We both chose fish and chips and enjoyed a thoroughly delicious meal followed by an equally tasty dessert. Went again the following night and tried cranachan for the first time and have been making it ever since. Can't wait to return.

Dining in the conservatory at the front of the hotel is ideal to world the world go by while enjoying a meal in a relaxed atmosphere. The menu gives a good choice and the food is prepared to order. The food is excellent in quality, quantity and presentation. The staff are welcoming, attentive and friendly without being over-bearing. The value is excellent and in general the Salen Inn would be a challenge on all fronts to many larger city restaurants.

This must be one of the worst pubs I have been in. Tables were filthy , floors were sticky and staff were uninterested. We ordered two drinks and could not find a clean table, then after using the toilets and actually feeling the stickiness of the floor , left. There are so many nice bars in this area, if you see it ... walk on by ! Giving it one star is flattering!!

Visited 3 times in 5 days and probably spent more on coffee than we did on merchandise (and Tiso is an excellent shop by the way). Excellent coffee, lovely cake selection and a truly fantastic full English/Scottish breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful. View to the Cairngorms outstanding and our doggy companions most welcome.

Dreadful food. After waiting for more than 40 minutes our inedible burgers arrived. Mine had 2 pieces of lettuce and a dry patty that was inedible until I added barbecue sauce. By the time the sauce arrived it was cold so even less pleasant. My husband's burger had bacon that was so hard he couldn't cut it. And the same patty. I gave an honest answer when asked about my meal and suggested they needed a new cook. It was the worst meal I have eaten in years. I'm told it used to be good. Avoid it at all costs.

Fantastic to have so many GF options to eat. We both opted for GF pancakes with bacon and maple syrup and a coffee. The coffee was perfection and the pancakes utterly delicious. Big, fluffy and just THE best find in Inverness! Thank you ❤️
