Sale e Pepe in Kensington and Chelsea

This is a pretentious and extremely overpriced restaurant. Entrees are served without any accompaniments - those needed to be ordered separately. A quiet atmosphere, however, the wait staff was oversolicitous and attempted to get you to order more items, particularly desserts. They placed great value on what they thought you should be eating. Upon presenting the bill, we noted that the service charge was included, and, yet, we were asked to make an additional service charge on their behalf - which we declined. We find no reason to recommend this restaurant as there are other Italian restaurants in the area, offering far better value.

Very attentive service! Came here for the good seafood but surprisingly fell in love with the tortelloni with pumpkin and sage!

Service couldve been better if the waiter had informed us the pasta was good for sharing. Person who took our order even looked like the manager. There were 3 of us dining, and we decided to order mains for each of us. My friend and I ordered the same pasta. He couldve clearly said one order is enough or more than enough for two people and coudlve recommended other dishes. Totally surprised when the food came and there are two serving plates of the pasta. Even confirmed with another waiter if the food is indeed for sharing. And she said YES! To the waiter who took our order, please be mindful next time. Let's not waste food.

good food but not like 20 years ago with singing waiters. Unfortunately nothing was done with our birthday message. If you want to talk privately, this is not a good choice because you are sitting right next to each other

Have been visiting Sale Pepe for 40 years and have always given it 4-5 stars. Restaurant recent closed for refurbishment and this was our first return. The refurbishment looks good and has retained ‘old’ atmosphere but with a high quality update. Sale Pepe has never been cheap but given its location, excellent service and food, this has never been issue. Until now. The menu has been revamped with most Italian ‘favourites’ removed and replaced. The prices are eye-watering, even by Knightsbridge standards and the service, whilst abundant was ineffective with long waits for drinks despite repeated requests. The food was ok but not a patch on previous standard despite almost doubling the cost. It just didn’t deliver an Italian (or any other) restaurant experience - at any level. Translating the menu into Italian does not make the food authentic Italian. I want to be delighted at Sale Pepe, not disappointed and reluctant to revisit. Simply. There was no delight. The management needs to take a really good, hard look at itself and ask what does it want to be.

Didn’t really hit the mark for us. Pros -Welcoming staff -Decent service -Great starters. All by us of enjoyed our starters - salmon tartar, crab and Vitelli tomato were lovely. Cons -Limited menu -Mains were average at best. Cacio e pepe bland and flavourless, veal Milanese was poorly breaded and surprisingly fatty, not something I have experienced before. -Prices were off, compared to the quality of the food. No shortage of Italian restaurants in Knightsbridge and the standard is high. Overall very disappointing

Extremely poor service, super impolite blonde short-haired staff. We didn’t order some dishes and it came, staff forced us to keep it and pay for it. Racist against Asian. Average food with long waiting time. Totally not worth it.

Amazing food and amazing service!! The staff is really friendly and all the pastas are delicious. Ambiance is really nice and cozy. Best I've had in London so far.

Bemused Guys if you’re going to charge 60 quid for some overcooked sole (extra ££ for the soggy chips and spinach ) at least have decent service - chaotic rushed and eccentric service kind of worked when this was a jolly, noisy good value place but is less charming when you are paying 200 a head without pudding or cheese or coffee - an odd experience last night and eye wateringly expensive even by Knightsbridge standards

Table for 4. Sat us just next to the door at dinner time. Was recommended a wine from the list but we chose something else and I was questioned about my decision. Price list is shady I was closing the door after each customer so it would not blow wind/AC in my face. Personnel was going in and out without regard to my comfort even throwing nasty looks and comments such as "I'm going out again anyway". Will not go back there ever.

Wonderful to be back after the refurb! Same brilliant and buzzing atmosphere, fantastic service from you walk through the door until you leave full, satisfied and happy hours later - a true gem of an old school Italian restaurant!

We used to come here a lot, but haven’t been for a few years now. Was always been my favourite spot in London. The recent refurb had been done well and possibly was well needed. Slightly different atmosphere from old (the waiter’s in black tie singing through to the service are no more), but the staff were great and attentive. The tightly packed tables still give much the same feel, with more modern feel. The floor manager (lady with blond curly hair, unfortunately we didn’t get her name) was superb, very friendly and accommodating. Food was great, as always. We had the lentil salad which was very fresh with beef carpaccio to start. Followed by the lobster linguine which is always a hit. Definitely back again, and soon.

We ordered a few starters which was great but when we moved onto the main of the Linguine Alle Vongole and borttaga, the pasta was rather bland and the pasta water did not full emulsify so was more wet than creamy.

Love the new design. Food great, service superb. Wine list could offer a few more middle priced good Italian wines than it does.

This was my favourite restaurant in this area, a real atmospheric taste of Italy in London. Now it has been refurbished, all the atmosphere has sadly gone with old decor. It is now a nothing special middle of the road place to eat. The staff are nice, some, loud and over the top, a bit theatrical and overbearing. We waited a LONG time for out main course, the food was fine but nothing special. I was ill last year and gave up having sugar, but I decided to treat myself to desert, I was dumbfounded when I was told that there was no desert menu!!!!! Only tiramisu ! How can a restaurant not have a desert a menu ??????????? My last gripe is about the table opposite us. A lady who may have been a regular, or someone well known, (not to me), had her 2 poms brought in and sat next to her on the seat, I love dogs and am happy to see them in restaurants, but absolutely not on the seats! The seats are for diners, dogs should be on the floor, someone else would have sat there after her, wrong, wrong, wrong, even if you are the queen of sheba!

Fabulous room. Food average. Waiters hurried and distracted. Has lost and needs to find the personal 'family' touch from before the refit.

Being Italian me and my mum had lunch on Saturday 9th March.we were so looking forward to it as i was treating my mum for mothers day.. The food was very disappointing and really small potions at high prices. Food tasted bland. We had calamari and believe you me you would not get this in any italian restaurants in Italy. My chicken was £32.Cannot be justified. We asked the waiter if chef was italian and he was not.New Management had taken over in the last 2 weeks.This place needs to improve especially in the area of Kinghtsbridge

Excellent quality ingredients traditional italian food, pastas, fish veal etc well cooked. Definitely would recommend note the portions are generous, I had a veal chop with was huge and my wife tagliatelle (as main course) which she couldn't finish. Ambiance is great and service good only downside is the prices are a bit high veal chop with rocket salad was £65.

I dont think they could pack anymore people into the place even if they tried. Too many people for the area they had. Most could not even get up to go to the toilet as no space. We could not really speak to each other as the place was far too load. Food was very poor - my wives lobster risotto was over salted to the point the we could not eat it- had to return. My ravioli was under cooked - Place is over prices and food very poor. Should of gone to Zizzi. Even the pic on their web site are better than the food. Sorry but would not go again .

Food was good, service was extremely disappointing, not the usual attentive service. We will visit again soon to see if things have improved as this was our favourite local.

We were very excited to go back to Sal e Pepe after its refurbishment. We have been coming here for many years and loved the vibe, the staff and the food. It’s changed beyond recognition. It’s very dark, the staff were mainly new and clearly inexperienced. Not a crime but the food was really not good and very expensive and the whole visit felt rushed. The focaccia and the crisp bread were soggy and cold, it tasted stale. My veal chop, for £55 came up with nothing and it was fatty. When I had only eaten a very small amount of it, no one asked if it was ok, it was just taken away. I had looked forward to the lobster spaghetti but this is only available for two people and as my husband doesn’t eat fish it wasn’t possible for me to have it. My husband had the smallest dish of pasta you could imagine and he said that it was very ordinary. I have to say this was a very disappointing visit.

Truly awful. Not a patch on what it used to be. Cold fatty food extortionate prices poor service. Never going back.

I always have the Liver and it is usually excellent Yesterday it was a bit grisley and wasn't cooked properly. However every thing else was excellent. I will still go there again for the Liver as it was probably just a one off glitch.

We had a great family night out at a new Sale e Pepe. The venue has a cosy feel and great buzz. Our food and service were impeccable, the general manager was charming and attentive so were the rest of team. The seafood offering was cooked to perfection. The must try special is their delicious Lobster Linguine. We can’t wait to return.

This has become my one of my regular favourite Italian restaurant in London for over 15 years. Obviously there are many top notch and great Italian restaurants in London but sometimes, other than the food and service, we often re-visit places for different reasons. Food-wise, the quality has always been very consistent and excellent. Service level could be a bit unpredictable as they are a very busy restaurant (especially at night). Tables are packed close together and usually, you will fill up the whole table with dishes and drinks easily. Our favorite are the Burrata cheese and their pasta. Their pasta portion are absolutely huge, for our appetite...!

A cosy place which we booked for a treat. The meal was very good, although the menu did not offer as many choices as we'd have liked. It was quite busy on on Thurs night. The service is attentive BUT just as we left the female host was offering our coats from the cloakroom to other people!!! Luckily my husband noticed and intervened. No apology was given! Why have numbered cloakroom tickets if you just give away belongings? Ended the night on a low.

Delicious take-out - I especially love their quinoa salad and minestrone! I noticed they’re closed indefinitely - is it just for the holidays? If so when will they re open?

Oh dear oh dear. Never go back. My first visit here was 40+ years ago and Tony reigned supreme! From the tender age of 35, I have always been a fan. No more. The soup was water with added limited veg. the liver frankly indeible, the pototoes from a tin and so on. Service aveage at best. And I hate this U.S practice of offering a choice of tip from 15% upwards on multiple choice, it sucks. Sad all good things come to an end. My visits to Sale e Pepe being one such event.

Average service for an over priced menu

Catastrophic reception. Greeted by 3 different people, the 3rd person told us that our reservation was canceled because we were with our 4 year old daughter. Pregnant and out of breath, we walked 30 minutes in the rain to find the restaurant.

The food was exquisite! Wonderful and attentive service, staff was polite and all the food was delicious. Memorable experience, highly recommended.

We were booked in for a birthday lunch on a busy Saturday. Unfortunately our guests were delayed by the appalling train service and were very late arriving. The restaurant were very accommodating and held our table. They were very attentive and never made us feel uncomfortable. When lunch got underway the service and food were excellent. The staff are brilliant with children. They really saved the day.

Frankly speaking, although the restaurant is luxurious, the space is very narrow and very noisy. The pasta has no taste. In the name of God, grace. Risotto is a sea food hero that you should not miss Finally, the restaurant is expensive and I feel it is not worth it. Your safety

Traditional, typical, fantastic Italian experience

This was my first visit to the restaurant since 2020 (used to visit a lot before) and I’ve noticed a drastic drop in the service and the food quality! Service: -we had a reservation, once we entered the restaurant, the hostess didn’t greet or welcome us as she was busy with her phone. She just looked at us saying “yeah..?”. And she didn’t find our reservation because the restaurant system wasn’t updated… -the waiters were unfriendly and some of them were rude. A guest next to us had a complaint about his food, you can hear the waiter huffing once he gets called by him. -one of the waiters kept on touching his hair in the kitchen!! (kitchen doors were open) and then touched the plates with the same hand! Food: -appetizers were as good as I remember. -truffle pasta was quite disappointing, it was full of butter and the butter wasn’t even clinging to the pasta. Ended up finishing the pasta and left with a puddle of truffle butter on the plate. -other pasta dishes felt greasy too. -non of the waiters offered us parmesan cheese to be grated on our plates, even though they went around and asked other guests if the wanted some. (Wouldn’t even bother complaining about the food to the waiters due to their attitude) -desserts were decent. This restaurant used to be one of my favorite Italian restaurants in London. The service used to be superb and they used to serve the best truffle pasta, not anymore unfortunately!

Great food but way too expensive for what it was

I do not recommend this place. One of the “luxury food place” wannabes. But here is the thing, location in Knightsbridge does not mean food is good. Restaurant simply pours extremely salty tomato sauce over every dish trying to make it look and taste better. As the result all you taste is “sea salt” tomatoes. Don’t waste your time or money here it is absolutely not worth it.

Amazing food. Great service. Lovely place. They create experiences so good you’ll never forget. Our number one Italian place. Would highlight recommend. My other half has gluten & lactose intolerances, their menu is provides fantastic choice for people who can’t have gluten. She had heavenly thoughts when she took her first bite.

Fantastic pasta with white truffles was a real treat as was the delicious Minestrone soup that was served at the right temperature (hot) with friendly service ensured that we had a lovely dining experience

Excellent evening had last night. Offering cosy vibes, excellent food and amazing service. We were well looked after by Santino and Elisa. Very impressed with their menu as there was a wide selection for me which I ordinarily struggle with being a gluten free pescatarian. Food portions are generous. Almost too generous! You definitely leave with a very full tummy :)

An amazing Italian cuisine located a stone throw away from Harrods. The seafood linguine is one of the best in town. The service can be better as the waiters have to be more attentive or perhaps they might be short-handed due to the overwhelming demand. The atmosphere can get a lil bit rowdy as the restaurant is small and the noise can be unbearable for some.

Used to be our go-to place, not anymore - prices too high compared to newer & better places nearby, and their food no longer as good (for example, our Congo Le was served with sandy clams, for we stopped going 4 years ago ! Last week we went & gave it another try, this vongole had a few warm clams, but pasta was tasteless, just tossed in olive-oil without any clam broth . . .) Plus they showed us a bill without details, but showing the line for tips ! Mentioned that to our friends, who had similar poor experiences & stopped going there for awhile since.

We came here for years but then COVID. This was our favorite Italian restaurant in London for the great food, friendly welcome and zippy service. Now, three and a half years later, there is a cover charge, the smallest veal is 600 grams and the service has changed. We first got George, the manager, sort of a maitre d’. I asked about the size of the veal, complained at the size and he turned our service over to Alix , who saved the meal. Affable and quick, he brought us our dinner. This place was consummate in the past; it’s now become another higher priced Italian restaurant with acceptable food. Disappointing. I won’t be back; my partner wants to try it one more time.

We enjoyed a nice dinner with our family here on Sunday, and everyone ordered something different, and every single dish was delicious. The service and the whole atmosphere was very nice.

Cannot fault this lovely place, one of the best experiences of service I’ve had in London. Well worth visiting for a celebration or occasion but just as lovely for a regular visit if you value authentic Italian hospitality. My boyfriend and I had meat dishes but ordered the carbonara to take away. I would go back to try other pasta and fish dishes.

Been to Sala Pepe many times over 30years You can see changed hands It has become a normal Italian restaurant Food not as good as prices high paid a high service charge and had the cheek to suggest a tip when meal presented . My Wife always has a lasanga which wasn't the same . Shame we loved this place

Excellent restaurant, they were extremely kind in spite of our big delay. Also great choice in Chelsea if you are GF and vegetarian. Best coffee in the area! Including the cappuccino!

Felt like a pretty average place, I was expecting more. The food was not so great

We saw Sale e Pepe online from an influencer recommending it as a delicious Italian. The restaurant is situation down a dimly lit side street and inside the restaurant was unappealing so we chose to sit outside. We were shocked to find how expensive the items on the menu were however, thought that if the food was delicious that that it would be worth it. However we were sadly mistaken and disappointed with the standard of food. I’ve had nicer lasagnas from a supermarket, the the side of broccoli came unseasoned and boiled- bland, with no flavour. The carbonara was very average- I’ve had much better. The servers were far more attentive to other tables and forgot to give us the complimentary bread and took awhile to take our order. Would not recommend. Considering how expensive this restaurant is, the overall quality of the food, ambience and service is poor. I would not recommend this restaurant.

I have been coming here for absolutely years, however since Tony left its been steadily going downhill. The menu was very limited, no specials (which were the best) The place was empty at 1300, very unusual. Langoustines were not shelled, was told that there wasnt much meat on them and so the dish would look empty. I was shown one (as if I hadnt seen one before) and it absolutely reeked. To top it all there was a £2 per head table charge, a coke that cost £6 and to top it all a 13% service charge. There is no atmosphere in the place any more, just very dour waiters who give you the impression they wished they were somewhere else. I wont go again, sorry to say it, but its not a good value for money restaurant any more

The 1st lol and u know that this is one classy place . The accent is polished , the tableware is just right , the servers quite smart , the prices , o quite high , all the makings of a hi end place . There is no disappointment here . The quality is impeccable. Sadly some of the prices are out of whack . The snootiness too is unwarranted On balance , this is a place with a 2nd visit

Very close together tables, standard food, small portions and expensive. 13% service charge and extra cover charge added also. £6 for a coke and £6 for water. For these prices I’d rather dine in Novikov Mayfair or Cicettis in Knightsbridge. Over £100 for 2 small dinners and 2 soft drinks.

Many dishes are very good ( lasagna, veal, eggplant ) Atmosphere is nice. However way overpriced and the service is very slow and non attentive, I guess it’s because it’s very crowded.

Visited from California. Found reviews on TripAdisor. Liked it so much the first time we went back again. Delightful staff. The food was delicious. Really made us feel welcome. Even the patrons were friendly and engaged in light conversation. Really loved it.

Having been an occasional but regular patron of S&P for over 40 years, I was disappointed to find that the familiar team had disappeared. My disappointment gave way to horror when I saw the menu prices, many of which appeared to have doubled since my 2022 visit ….. most disappointing of all, the dishes I chose were less well prepared than they had been before. On the positive side, the welcome from all staff, and the new maitre D, was warm and charming. The streetside terrace was nicely presented and most inviting. And we much appreciated a carafe of limoncello offered to finish our meal. Still have affection for the old place, but in my new retired status at these prices I shall have to think twice about a future visit. A special two or three course lunch price (not offered) may well have made the difference…

I have eaten in Sale e Pepe before and really enjoyed it. I needed to eat quickly and popped in to see if they had a table for 1. They did and I ordered spaghetti Carbonara and a large whiskey and coke. They brought some bread. I asked for butter. I didn’t get it. The spaghetti arrived quickly and it looked strange. It was like a solid lump of pasta. Very sticky and gluey. I ate a few mouthfuls but couldn’t eat anymore. I told the waiter and he brought the maitre de over. He asked if I wanted something else but as I was in a hurry I declined. I asked for the bill. He had taken the pasta of but it was still £21. So I had virtually nothing to eat and charged £17 for a whiskey. Given the situation I would have expected him to say ‘no charge’ This is a very reputable restaurant but I was very disappointed and hungry.

Vibrant, little Italian cafe in the heart of Knightsbridge. Menu lists all the quintessential Italian dishes. Simple, good food and great service.

Visiting London for the first time and decided to make a reservation - did not disappoint. Service was amazing and food was perfection - make sure to try the veal starter it was so delicious and tender. We highly recommend and will visit it again on our next trip to London.
