Salamander Restaurant in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Was quiet when we called on evening we were made to feel welcome on entering good choice of tapas items on menu all obviously freshly cooked recently taken over by new people hopefully they do ok

I booked for my Dad’s 70th birthday and they went above and beyond! The food was exceptional. We opted for the chef’s recommendation of serving the dishes as they were ready which meant we could savour each course and look forward to the next. The monkfish was a highlight but every dish was sublime. If you’re in the area, I would highly recommend checking out this restaurant.

Small but wonderful selection of meat, fish and vegetarian tapas-style dishes. Very pleasant service from a small and knowledgeable team keen we chose well. Very unusually, two tables came and left without ordering. This seems to be down to a recent change of proprietor and a radical change of styles, all too much for what is, I guess, a novelty resistant local clientele. I hope they thrive, and if so, we shall return.

Newly taken over. A selection of small plates which are cooked and brought out one at a time, each creative, well presented and delicious. We shared 6 plates. A really fabulous restaurant.

My wife and I ate here last night and thoroughly enjoyed the food and a lovely bottle of wine. We had three dishes each (including 5 different ones) and each was as delicious as the last. We weren't sure how full we'd feel after three dishes but it's amazing how quickly they fill you up. We still had room for a plate of cheese and a shared dessert though! Well done to the new owners, a completely different dining experience in the village and we're sure it's going to be a big hit! The service was excellent too! Good luck!

We joined last night for the opening the food was delicious, presentation was perfect, staff were so lovely and welcoming, lovely cosy atmosphere, will definitely be returning 🥰🥰xx

Everything complimented each other. It was delicous. Dessert was amazing too. Had a edible salamander on both our desserts. The chocolate and fruit shot matched my dessert tart which was a lovely surprise. The local raspberry cider was good as well and I've managed to find some at home. A real hidden gem! We would come again.

MUST BOOK IN ADVANCE . We arrived Monday and read great reviews written by folk staying where we are staying, so we thought we would make a reservation went down, and Hazel managed to squeeze us in for Wednesday evening(last slot very lucky). What a meal, we had three courses each and a bottle of wine, if you like good food, you don’t want to miss this place, the service was spot on also. Together we had the duck spring roles and chicken skewer for starter, lamb rack & rib eye steak for main, followed by the chocolate tort, strawberry trifle and sticky toffee everything was great.

I was recommended to try this restaurant by locals. Although very small it was charming, the menus looked very inviting. I chose to order rack of lamb with vegetables, while my wife ordered loin of pork. On arrival my lamb looked fantastic, this is where it went wrong. The meat was full of fat with gristle and sinus running throughout. It was so tough I couldn’t cut it. I asked for the meal to be replaced with the pork my wife was enjoying. This was not an issue, however it took another 30 minutes to arrive. The pork was very nice. I then enjoyed a bread pudding with clotted cream which was very good. Although we had a problem the issue was dealt with but was made to feel a little awkward. To be honest I would not return here.

Friendly , knowledgeable staff and well cooked food at such great value meant we had a lovely evening here on our recent holiday . Pay a visit here you won’t be disappointed.

This is a lovely little restaurant in the heart of Mevagissey. The atmosphere is laid back and chilled and the staff are a delight. Attentive but friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!

After a week in Somerset Devon and Cornwall this was hands down the best meal we had. Recommended to us by a local. Superb local produce, carefully prepared and expertly presented. Fresh flavours, slightly complex but not overly complicated. Simply combined but creative enough to be interesting. Hot crab starter was wonderful. Fresh off the boat hake, chunky and flavoursome and very glad I managed to squeeze in a dessert. Also the English white wine treated a little light to start but quickly grew on me. It feels like this place should have an accolade or two , although maybe the couple running it may not want that. Lovely service too.

We were so looking forward to eating at Salamander after a 12 hour sail from Penzance. And it did not disappoint.! My friend and I had the scallops to start followed by the Cornish sole with seaweed butter accompanied by the perfectly chilled Puilly Fume. Chocolate Torte and the Cornish cheese selection to finish with a glass of Tawny Port. Salamander is, without any doubt, the best restaurant not only in Mevagissy but probably anywhere. One of those meals you remember forever. Go now before the owners retire at the end of August!

If all restaurant owners ran their establishments like this there would never be a negative review on TripAdvisor. Ambience - perfect. Service - perfect. Food - exceptional. I say exceptional, but that understates it. The Cornish sole was cooked perfectly. The scallops were also perfect. The chocolate and raspberry desert - astonishing. Mark and Hazel are experienced professionals and it really shows.

Really great place and good food, I had steak but sadly no option to add a sauce and when I asked if I could pay extra for the sauce the same as another dish but the answer was a NO! We then asked if we came again could we pay extra to have a sauce with the steak and the answer was far too negative for me “will have to see on the night / it depends how busy we are if the chief will do or NOT!” I said ok well we won’t come again then with the reply being OK… We come from Derbyshire and the good restaurants listen and say yes no problem. We are two tonight but were going to come back in a few days with the family so 8 of us but with this NEGATIVE attitude we will spend our money else where…

Food lovely but felt rushed to order

I can only say that we come on holiday each year to Mevagissey and this restaurant always lives up to expectations. The food is always delicious and the service and atmosphere are also top notch. We started coming before we have our now ten year old son. He sees it as the treat of the holiday and the grown up restaurant 😊. We book before we come to ensure a table as quite rightly it is very popular. On a personal note my son has Autism but the atmosphere is calm and warm. He really enjoys our visits and it is always a lovely family time. If I could give more than five stars I would. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amazing food, attentive service, and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere - all very reasonably priced! The freshness of everything we ordered was outstanding. I had the Cornish sole as a main and it was cooked to the point where it was almost creamy, really delicious. The crab hot pot was another standout. I would very happily eat an entire tray of that. Strongly recommend everything about this place and will come again if we're ever in Megavissey!

The staff were attentive and friendly, and the menu was explained well. The food was mostly good. My partner had the breem, which was excellent but I had the steak, which was second rate to say the least. Not particularly tender, and a lot of gristle. I've had better from Morrisons.

What a gem of a restaurant in Mevagissey, this was our first experience eating at the Salamander, the food is amazing, staff are always on hand to serve you. We had the 2 course meal costing £29 per person. I had the spicy chicken and the schezwan duck breast and veg, it tasted amazing. We wanted to give the staff a nice tip but the credit card machine would not let us and we did not carry any cash with us, so the next time we go we will take cash with us so we can pay a tip, big thanks to the chef's and the wonderful staff, 👍👍🍺🍺🍺

There was a party of 8 booked in for an evening, and 2 of the group were pescatarians. I had scallops to start, and my wife had a crab hot pot. One of the pesc's had a mackerel and salmon mousse. He said it was the best fish starter he'd ever had. My scallops were delicious. My wife said the same about her crab pot. With the mains, you have a choice of sauces served on the side, I had a muhammarra sauce to go with my monkfish, and my wife had a garlic butter sauce. Both fish were cooked to perfection, but no fault of the restaurant, my sauce took away from the delicate flavour of the fish. One member had the sole. All in all, everybody thoroughly enjoyed the food. 4 of us went back the following night and it was all as good as the first. If you are in Mevagissey or close by, do try The Salamander. You will not be disappointed

Nicest food we have ever had. Great cosy little restaurant with brilliant friendly service. Portions were perfect. This is our second time in mevagissey, and first time here. I would call this a must visit, at least once.

Thoroughly enjoyed meal. Was pleased they were able to accommodate us with no reservation. Chef Mark clearly has perused dishes with creative flair but not over the top. Interesting specials, but we stuck with tried & true rack of lamb which was perfectly prepared. Dessert Cornish cream custard (cappuccino flavour) was a standout.

Lovely freshly prepared food, local produce, reliable quality, good service and just an overall enjoyable time, again. Just a shame we live so far away :)

We were a group of four and had pre booked which I am recommending to avoid utter devastation, it's that good. In fairness you are spoilt for choice in Mevagissey for great food as we ate very well but I have to say Salamander was a cut above. We had a lovely welcome from the front of house ladies, they were so accommodating and everything was perfectly paced, they both looked after us so well and it was busy, made the visit 10/10. Now the food, faultless! From start to finish every mouthful was a delight. I really loved the menu and in my opinion how menus should be small and perfectly formed. Salamander obviously has quality chef's with real skill and taste. Meat and fish cooked absolutely spot on everything from the vegetables to the sauces were a real treat to savour. The menu is very reasonable in price and that just added to the joy, also the portion size is generous which was welcome, I had the rack of lamb, it was incredible. Thank you for a memorable dinner with our friends and rest assured you have four new fans.

Truly excellent food prepared with care & attention to detail. Wholly worthwhile. I had the scallops, while my wife had the Bass, both cooked to perfection.

When we dine out in Mevagissey we tend to head straight to the harbour front and we are usually underwhelmed by the food. Tonight, we decided to be more adventurous and found Salamander. What a great find! After starters, my partner had the Lamb and I went for the Duck. Both were cooked to perfection. Definitely made me aware of how frequently we tolerate moderately cooked food. This was exceptional and we will definitely be heading back although we might opt out of overdoing it with three courses next time ☺️. I have given 4 stars for atmosphere only because we were very early (18:00) so were alone in the restaurant for a large part of the evening before it started filling up.

This was our 3rd Christmas Lunch visit in four years and it was again excellent both in terms of quality of food and the service. Mark & Hazel & their team deserve every accolade received!

Unpretentious local family-run restaurant. Chef produces amazing locally sourced dishes. Interesting menu - we had local fish of the day. Best ever giant dessert of meringue, bitter orange, chocolate pavlova.

Lovely ambience in the restaurant, somehow contemporary yet traditional at once. The staff were very helpful and efficient and the food delicious. We'd definitely go again. They couldn't take tips by card and we had no cash so couldn't leave anything but we will make sure we do next time!

We had two gorgeous meals at this restaurant in late September - the food and the ambience (and the wine!) absolutely perfect. I had scallops on the first occasion, and duck on the second. Thoroughly recommend!

What a fantastic find, a cosy welcoming restaurant. The staff were such lovely people with great customer skills. Was welcomed warmly by the female host on arrival. A cosy restaurant so understandably our first evening choice for dining was fully booked. We were fortunate to get a table on our second to last night and we were not disappointed. Great service, lovely ambience and a number of very interesting options on the menu. If I was being a bit picky, the steak was a little under cooked for the medium order but nevertheless still very enjoyable. The fish was excellent, nice vegetables and a good wine list. This restaurant is thoroughly recommended.

This is our second visit and decided to leave until our last day in Pentewan having an end of Summer break with parents. Again absolutely stunning food, great service and quality. This is a must if you are staying in Pentewan or Mevagissey. We will always try and go when on holiday each year. Worth pre-booking.

Really lovely evening - despite the restaurant being very short staffed the service was brilliant as was the quality of the food. We were in awe watching just one member of staff serve 28 people, smiling, calm and bringing out beautifully cooked food. Book ahead - there were disappointed folk trying for a table - and make sure you have cash for the car park - minimum card spend designed to make you overpay!

We visited today for the fourth time in the last two years. The food as usual was absolutely fabulous and we are all foodies ( including two trained chefs) so possibly a little hard to please. The owners are super friendly the atmosphere is good and as it is not a large place the noise level is low so you can actually have a conversation, if you can stop eating the marvelous food long enough that is. We have experienced most of the food on the menu between us and have not been disappointed. The wine list has a good selection and is reasonably priced. Another plus is that you are not rushed and can have a wait between your main and pudding. The prices are set at 2 courses for £28 and 3 courses for£34, which for the quality and amount of food we think is excellent value. It does get full especially on Saturdays so book in advance so as not to be disappointed. Looking forward to the next time we can visit.

Not been here for 20 years. Booked it for my best friend's birthday. She's awkward (a coeliac). Was every bit as good as I remembered it. My friend had exactly what she wanted off the menu, no compromise. I will not leave it so long to return.

This is by far our favourite restaurant in Cornwall, This year we stayed in Bude but still travelled an hour & half to eat here.

A real gem of a restaurant tucked away in Mevagissey. Don't be fooled by what you see from the outside as you won't be disappointed with the lovely food they serve and excellent service. You will need to book in advance as they are always busy, just wish we lived closer as would be there every week! 👌

We had a lovely meal here during our stay in Mevagissey. A very busy little restaurant so its advisable to book in advance. The service was quick and efficient and the food was excellent. The hot crab pot was especially good.
