SAINSY'S in Thurrock

1st time I have tried sainsys and was not disappointed, the pies are huge and filled to bursting point, mash was lovely and so was the liquor. Ordered and collected couldn't find a parking space so it was brought out to my car thank you for that. Will defiantly be going back for more. Didn't have time to take photos, it was demolished as soon as it was on the plate lol

Use this shop alot, been short changed before with the food so should check everytime I order!! Last visit was for 2 x tripple pie, tripple mash and liquor and 2 x double pie, single mash and liquor. Got to my fathers 60 miles away with a grin on my face as he loves us to bring him his fortnightly munch and find that once again we are missing 1 x tripple mash. Thanks alot! Obviously I did get charged the right amount, if only they took as much care with the order!

Never eaten pie and before. Wasn’t I what I hoped. The mash potatoes tasted like powered instant potatoes and the so called mince. Sure it’s the tinned variety. My English friend said it was nothing like the real thing. Pretty tasteless !

This is predominantly a pie and mash place, but they do jellied eels and hot eels as well - I like the latter with mash and liquor. As it's in the foodcourt, all the plates and cutlery are plastic - not ideal but understandable. The quality of the food at Sainsy's is good and the service is always with a smile. Efficient too. And a good cup of tea.

I bought 2 pie and mash to take home for my son he said he enjoyed it , I think it’s over priced only want the pie and mash but still had to pay for the liquor that didn’t make sense to me . Surely it should be cheaper . The food court I can’t stand it’s so busy and messy .

Worse pie and mash I’ve every had , would never go back , not sure any meat in the pie, tasteless . Drinks were good

Had 2 visits to this Pie Mash shop and have been pleasantly pleased with the food. Second visit had take home and was still very good. Will visit again.

I hoped to eat a britisch specialty: meat pie and mashed potato with sauce the sauce was a water based tastless solution, the meat pie had also a very liquid base inside with harly some meat and also tasteless awfull

Mixed reviews on here about this place, but I think some of the plastic cockneys who have moaned about the place forget that this is a pie shop in a shopping centre! The positives - the pie, mash and liquor are all more than acceptable - I’ve never had a bad one, but the negatives unfortunately spoil the ‘pie and mash experience’. Styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery really don’t do this place any justice, although I suspect this is a shopping centre rule. The mash is also deployed with an ice cream scoop (which is sacrilege as far as I’m concerned)... to be fair, knifing the mash on would probably break the plate! China plates and irons needed, but for a decent bit of grub amongst the usual shopping centre array of fast food, you can’t go wrong!

I was dubious about trying this as Pie & Mash was a big part of my childhood and I have high expectations of how it should taste but this was amazing, authentic and didn't disappoint. Well done, made my long shopping day much better!!

It is what it is. While the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired the food was better than expected. I went with a right old fussy cockney an aficionado of pie and mash and he said “it’s alright”. Trust me I’ve been goddards in Greenwich and that was awful. This has good choice of pies and no lumpy mash and gravy not just liquor.

Visited here pre cinema the food used to be really good not anymore, tasteless mash and liqueur rock hard pastry on pies paper plates plastic knives and forks that break because pastry is so hard.If this was the first time you'd tried pie mash you probably wouldn't bother again. On the plus side lady on the till was friendly and gave good service It is massively overpriced for the quality of food here .

Nope, just no... Probably for a tourist palate, but just damn bland, nothing like the others I’ve tried. Wonderful happy girls behind the counter though...? Threw away the balance😢

Not particularly good. Only went because we were shopping in Lakeside. Wouldn't return, wouldn't recommend. Nothing like a real pie & mash meal.

Enjoy pie and mash, in a proper pie shop,,so we thought we'd try the one in lakeside food court, really pleasantly surprised, not did they just have the traditional pie ( with mince) but also other varieties, my husband had mince, while I had steak, both were delicious, mash lovely, and both enjoyed the parsley sauce, will definetly return and recommend

Fairly pleasant food lovely staff. When you know what real pie and mash tastes like this dosent compare. Unfortunately there are fewer and fewer true pie and mash shops around.

Went there for lunch while shopping in Lakeside. Good quick polite service. I was given a metal spoon and fork and asked to return them when I’d finished. That was as good as it got. The pie was bland and tasteless. The liquor was thin and tasteless. Even the vinegar seemed to lack any flavour. The mash was ok.

This is not East London. It’s not necessarily typical of what o had growing up. That said, it’s very tasty, very well priced compared to what is around it, very nice service, good size portion and plenty of choice! Too much choice. I visit here every now again when in Lakeside. £4.10 for a pie and mash that will fill you up for the day. What more do you want?

Nice people, nice food, good old pie and mash. If you ask nicely they might let you have a proper spoon and fork, can’t get my head round eating it with a plastic set!! 👍👍

Visited lakeside on 28/12/17 very disappointed, food was served on a plastic thin plate with plastic knife and fork and a small spoon. Food was unseasoned and bland! Don’t bother if you like traditional pie and mash, the mince meat was tasteless and the liquor Luke warm slush.

Ok people I went here today to try pie n mash as been craving for some for a while. The liquid I think is too runny the meat in the pies is like the canned mince from the shops, the mash was ok but due to the liquor I was put off. The pastry seemed ok. I normally go to Kelly's in Bethnal green as they are the best but these were way off that standard.

Chose to eat here the other evening, rather than the usual fast food outlets. The idea is good. Sadly my pie was rancid....I pointed this out to the young man serving. The team member looked to speak to the Manager who wasn't around. I was then given another meal. I'm not impressed with the way in which the food is served. The young man had heavily chewed fingernails, he handled the pies without gloves - eew. I think there may be food hygiene issues with pies being kept warm for too long and poor serving methods. Had the Manager been available, it might have been possible to have some explanations.

We've eaten here lots of times & the food is always fantastic. The lady who served us was so friendly. We had a takeaway from here & food was still piping hot when we got home. Would highly recommend.

Visited at lunchtime. I have never eaten this before. Busy line of people. Ordered Pie mash and liqueur. I thought the food was let down by the plastic plate and plastic cutlery. Food was good but not that warm. £5.20 not bad for lunch.

Have had pie mash liquor at a few places this is by far the worst. Everything tastes bland beyond belief even vinegar and pepper did not rescue this. Poe was half cooked the filling disgusting watery more like a poor gravy. So disappointed with this....

Mi marido y l amor tarta, Puré y licor, así que fue una decepción enorme cuando tuvimos uno aquí hoy. Fue una pérdida de dinero y l que l'dutilizó el dinero para comprar otra comida en otro lugar en el Food Court. Junto al lago.

Always fresh and hot. Good amount of liquor. Lovely and clean. Good portion size. Not the cheapest pie and mash, but tasted good.

We had lunch here recently, as I don't eat meat I was pleasantly surprised that I had two pie options (root veg, soya mince & onion). I had the soya mince and onion with mash and gravy (vegetarian) and it was lovely, very tasty. The price is very cheap and reasonable too and the staff were very friendly. One thing that could improve is actually cutlery for those eating in as it was difficult to cut the pie crust with plastic knives and forks! Highly recommend.

Had been a number of times before as well. Not really very friendly and very plain tasteless food. Smallish portions. Much better options available elsewhere in the food court.

Felt hungry so went up the food hall at lakeside. Fancied some pie and mash, Sainsy's pie and mash, well being an east ended and growing up on pie mash, this was no where near the traditional London dish. The pies were stodgy and the mince was tasteless, mash was ok and liqueur adequate.All in all poor won't visit again.

Having discovered 'pie and mash' over the last two or three years and having eaten this at two different shops and enjoyed it, I decided to try Sainsy's in the Lakeside food court. I'm afraid I was disappointed. It wasn't as tasty as the other few I have eaten, but the worst thing was the pastry. It seemed undercooked, both in taste and texture. Even the liquor was a bit bland. Not good enough I'm afraid - couldn't decide between an overall 'poor' or and 'average' but decided to be generous as the food was piping hot and the service pleasant.

1ST timers to lakeside tried the pie & mash front of house V stern face at 1st but we broke the ICE 2 pies treble mash 3 pies double mash all for under £15 was very nice {if only pie crust could be thinner} under H&S NO CHINA PLATES if we was local would be regulars GIVE IT A GO

Today I took my mum up to the food court at Lakeside. We haven't been up there before so we looked all around the food court to decide what we wanted. I was so shocked to see a worker in the kitchen who is supposed to be dealing with food on his mobile. Not very good advertising is it? Of course it put me off straight away.

Pie and mash is excellent and tastes great. Would recommend. Staff are always polite and serve good portions

Their pies are really nice I recommend this place if you're ever in lakeside shopping centre. Also we were saved by two wonderful ladies Chloe and Vicky and they had good customer care skills and very polite and helpful. Keep up the good work girls.

We always get a takeaway from here, great pie and mash and licker. nice treat when we get home really yummy

Food was ok but the young lady that served us had a terrible attitude - surly and almost antagonistic - no idea why !I wont go back .

It is nice to see a good old English food outlet in a sea of world wide fast food outlets.My wife and I grew up in the London's East End Home of the most famous Pie and mash eateries. Our local then was Arthur Toms in Chatsworth Road Hackney (long since closed). My wife said it was the best pie and mash she has tasted for a long time along with good service makes this establishment well worth a visit when you are at Lakeside.

Pie and mash is one of my favourite meals I am used to east end pie and mash and very fussy ! Loved this one and both me and my husband go regularly here, pies are bigger and is no more expensive than anywhere else and considering where it is offers great value ! Wish they had proper plates and no polystyrene but I suppose impossible where based ! Would recommend to anyone yummy ! Great staff !

tried it while out shopping didn't enjoy it at all, bottom of the pies was burnt and hard with next to no meat, the mash tasted like smash and very pricey. i know these pies are from goddards so was very disappointed

My husband was at lakeside so he thought he would surprise me with pie and mash. I it was the worse pie and mash that I have ever tried to eat. Will never return, the good news was my dog ate the pies. So at least she was happy.

Shopping dans le mall et à l'heure du repas nous avons essayé sainsy's pie and Mash, typiquement londonien a t'on appris,excellentes pies avec de la purée maison a un prix imbattable, cela change de toutes ces chaînes...A essayer sans hésiter.

My wife and I had pie and mash here for lunch. The quality was good and hot with plenty of mince in the pies, a couple of scoops of mash and ample liqueur. The let down is that it's served on paper plates with plastic cutlery of which the spoon was too small. The service was fine and the girls were friendly.We also thought that it was overpriced. If not for the plates, cutlery and price I would have marked it very good. They do have a variety of pies and you can have ordinary gravy if you prefer.

The food was hot and tasty, but over priced and served on a true away plates but it was ok the staff were helpful and advised me what was what

Having been out for the day it was good to be able to have something a bit different.The food was hot and tasty.The menber of staff serving was very friendly and the service was quick.Lots of seating in the food court.Good value too.

I've had pie and mash a few times from here and its quite good value. Always hot and I love the chilli vinager. Being an eastenders I'm fussy with my pie and mash but I like this one. Only criticism is the paper plate and plastic knives and forks but I can live with that to get my fix !.

I use this place a lot and it's always great service and great food!! Pie n mash to die for!! Although they do give you plastic cutlery you can ask for real cutlery you just have to take them back to the shop once you have used them!! Brought up on pie n mash my whole life and can honestly say it's one of the best Go and enjoy!!!

What a bargain! Pie, mash, liquor and mushy peas for £5. Pity about the plastic cutlery and disposable plate but that's just the snob in me. I am known for my healthy appetite and this did not disappoint. Thoroughly enjoyable!

I had pie and mash here, it was vile had only a couple of mouthfuls, pie was almost empty of meat and the liquor tasted weird. Being an eastender was brought up on pie and mash. to top it off hey give you thin plastic cutlery which broke in half with the slightest pressure. Give this place a big miss, mine all went in the bin.

I use Sainsy's quite often and have no complaint what so ever regarding their food. To be fair it is not the same as Manzie's or Cooke's in London but it is very close and they also do take away as well.When i sit down to eat in Lakeside i always get offered a metal spoon and fork never the plastic ones.I would recommend anyone to try them out as i don't think you will disappointed.

Decent pie and mash at a not over the odds price of £4 for standard serve. Its in a food hall so its all plastic knives and plates which is nasty sadly.

The worst experience ever. I ordered pie and mash. The pie crust was like cardboard. I went back to ask for a metal knife and fork. Was asked to prove I had bought a meal could not prove it because I was not given a receipt. Girl on till thought it was funny and laughed at my complaint that I had just ordered my food (She was the one with Red Hair) No one was interested in my complaint. Do not even know how much my food was. Tried to eat with plastic Knife and Fork Pastry broke the fork. Handed my food back and asked for it to be shown to Senior Management. All I got was stared at by all three staff members whilst I sat and watched my Wife and Daughter eat. I did not ask for a refund but now feel ripped off. I will allow you 48 hours to reply before I publish my report. I am diabetic and must eat at certain times this was not to be because the food was so bad. It feels staff do not care what a change from my first visit.Staff remove pies from foil without washing there hands and have a bad habit of playing with their hair and face whilst serving. Due hygiene facts alone I regret every giving this outlet a positive review.

ok for quickly cooked food, but not quite as tasty as a proper pie and mash shop. Pies were ok, but not quite as nice as places like Castles Pie and Mash in Camden, or Tony's Pie and Mash in Waltham Abbey

This pie and mash here is so tasty, just like the old days. The liquor is to die for. They also do takeway.

Ok, they're not as good as the east end but that's to be expected. However it's a good second best, an ideal place to take the family as it's not too expensive either. If you can't get to Romford this will do nicely!

Whenever I am in the Uk with my family and we go to Lakeside shopping, I will always order pie, mash and liquor at Sainsy's. Having previously lived and worked in London (Bethnal Green) I have always gone to the pie and mash shop there. I was a little doubtful whether this would live up to the standard in London. Could not tell the difference! Lovely. The staff are always polite. The area is always clean. The price is good too. The pies, mash and liquor are divine. When you feel nostalgic for some East End pie and mash and don't want to travel that far, go to Sainsy's.

On a day out shopping with my family at lakeside, we found this pie and mash shop in the food court. Being a lover of pie and mash I thought I would give this one a go. We were very fortunate in so much as we had the last portion of stewed eels. I have to say my mother and I really enjoyed the meal which was pie mash eels and liquor. I have to say this is definitely one of the better pie and mash shops i have been to. The food was well presented , piping hot and of very good quality and well priced. Definitely worth a visit if your in lakeside.

This is a little treasure right in the middle of Lakeside food hall. Gorgeous pie, mash and liquor. Great friendly service. Good sized meal and wide ranging choice of alternative meals. Large size childrens meal, enough for an adult with a small appetite. Just a shame its not a full restaurant because I miss the wooden benches, green tiles and sawdust on the floor.

I am a huge fan of pie and mash and so went here when it opened to see how it measured to a number of other pie and mash shops I have visited. The pie was not too bad, it had some nice flavour but I do not feel it was as good as the traditional pies you get from places such as Dagenham etc. The mash was a real letdown. I found it quite flavourless and the liquor did nothing to improve the situation.

So so friendly and so so tasty!! Amazing value and you get so much! Love it. Even a vegetarian option! Great for eating in the food court or taking a couple pies home with you for dinner. Best pies around.

I visited Sainy's at Lakeside for Pie and Mash. I had traditional Pie my wife had Steak and Ale Pie with gravy. Wonderful pastry in both pie's with chunks of Steak in the Steak and Ale Pie. The Traditional Pie seemed to have pure minced beef, with no gristle..It was late in day leading into early evening but the staff where superb and knew their products.. Confirmed there was no EEL in the liquor( A sort of Parsley Sauce)..Mash was smooth not too buttery..At £3.95 for main course one of the better fast food options at Lakeside Food Court.
