It's a cracking pub, a social place, a relaxing space to enjoy one or two of many local beers. Always a good selection, the name of the pint I had escapes me....it was a light pale ale, not to flowery or hoppy just right.

This pub has been a firm favourite of mine for years. The place has a really lovely traditional feel and a relaxed, chilled out vibe! Plus to be fair they probably have one of the best ranges and best kept cask ale selection in Chesterfield. Really worth a visit.

The Rutland - Chesterfield Derbyshire This seems a decent boozer with up to eight real ale pumps though all of their are safe, conservative session strength brews. They could have at least one stronger, darker or less conventional offering. Nice staff, chatty customers, big sport screens, and promises of live entertainment at weekends. Arthur Chappell

Had a carvery meal there yesterday lunchtime which we really enjoyed. The new landlord is very obliging and friendly, lots of good beers to chose from and were pleased to see the pub still has it's well loved character and not been modernised. We shall certainly go back for a meal and a beer in the near future and wish the new landlord and his staff lots of success.

On our last visit a week ago found the food to be very badly cooked , I.e. the fish was burnt, new potatoes hard and chips grey and hard. The lasagne was not great either and was green and looked awful the garlic bread was sour and inedible Both meals were left, definitely will not return here .

We have always loved going to the Rutland - great selection of beer, plentiful. delicious food and nice staff. When we last ate at the Rutland we were surprised to find Anthony and his staff had migrated to the Boythorpe. However, we were extremely pleased with the new staff - friendly and helpful- and with the quality of food-still up to Di's standards. However, since then it's been one disappointment after the other. Our next visit was on the Easter weekend. There were tables free so we grabbed one, chose our food and went to the bar to order. The barman started to take our order. However, the woman behind the bar interrupted him to ask if we had reserved a table. I said no, but that there was no reservation sign on our table. She said that we could not order as they were only serving if a table had been reserved. She then produced a sign from in front of the till informing us of this; it was hidden by customers. We had not seen this as we came in the side door. We left and went elsewhere. Not wanting to abandon our favourite pub we gave it another shot. This time it was the weekend of the Chesterfield Mansfield game. I called ahead to book a table for 6.30 but was told they were stopping serving at 6 due to the game. Why? The match finished by 3 so people could get food when the after match drinkers were there but not later? A final try today. Food had always been served till 8. I wanted to book a table for 6.30. But I've just called to reserve a table only up be told they are stopping serving food at 5. Has the Rutland given up on regulars who want to have a nice meal, a few pints and a bottle of wine in favour of football fans and hard core drinkers?

We have been coming to The Rutland for food for over a year now, both in the week and on a Sunday for lunch and have never been disappointed, however over the last few times when we have visited (before and after the new management) we have started to notice a few things, firstly usually there is 3 of us but when we order a Sunday lunch each we just get one bowl of vegetables, surely the price of each lunch is with veg included and just because we sit on a table together does that mean we have to share veg ? If we sat on individual tables would we still have to share ??

The food is delicious pub food and excellent value - of course it is not Cordon Bleu but that is not what you are looking for in a low priced town centre pub. The beers are also very good but not the cheapest in town. I have encountered the very rude cook but she can also be very friendly when she is not stressed! Sometimes cleanliness can be an issue particularly after a busy session. Also it can be smelly near the front door where the smokers go but if you choose a table near the back you should be OK. If you are looking for gracious dining this will not be for you but if you are looking for yummy pub food at very reasonable prices plus a great pint, you will be well satisfied.

Today was not the best day to visit the rutland. We have been many times before and enjoyed our experiance however....Only one bar staff on a saturday and it was busy and she was obviously hungover. Hadnt bothered to check the reservations diary so our table hadnt been reserved. As the first to arrive of our group i then had to stand for a while before grabbing a table. After being at work all morning this wasnt ideal. Starters were brought out but the chef hadnt done enough chicken wings so they were brought out later. The young waitress asked if we wanted a break before the mains came out which we agreed to but then the chef came out to say she was already cooking our mains so no time at all between courses. Two asked for medium rare steaks but they were not pink. One of us ordered a certain dish which she didnt get but ate what was brought. However the bill had the original ordered dish not the dish we got. Mentioned it when we saw the bill and the bar tender said she was no good at maths. It was taking £3 off £89. Today was a bad day for the Rutland but usually it is better. They have many real ales to choose from and the food is usually ok.

We turned up in Chesterfield at midday on Saturday, to support the mighty Bristol Rovers Football Club against the local team, needing somewhere to refuel. Quite a few fans had mentioned the Rutland Arms as a decent welcoming establishment, and so we found it. There was a great range of real ales, and even three excellent proper ciders from the West Country. The menu offered two meals for a tenner, which is either excellent value, or a sign of low-quality food in small portions. Fortunately for us, it was the former. My son had steak and ale pie, with chips and gravy, and separately served vegetables (broccoli, carrots and peas). I had fish and chip, served with mushy peas and tartare sauce. Both measl were of decent, but not overwhelming size, were tasty and well-cooked and well presented. Everything you could wish for in day-to-day pub food. All the staff who served us were friendly and helpful - and were working really hard as the pub did fill up after a little while. We also had a drink in there after the game, and noticed family groups with small children on both occasions, clearly the pub is family-friendly. Speaking of friendliness, my son was wearing Bristol Rovers colours, as were a number of other customers. There were no dirty looks or hostility from locals wearing Chesterfield colours: a decent pub where everyone could mix together and enjoy their food and drink. The decor is trad pub, and the location is in the shadow of Chesterfield church, in the centre of the town. So a strong recommendation from us. Such a surprie o have a choice of three artisanal west country ciders in a Derbyshire town pub!

Well what can I say!If you are looking for a nice pub with professional, pleasant staff and amazing food then try the market! On the other hand, if you are looking for a pub with a yobish football culture then try this place! The thing that astounds me most is how the Brewery company that own this place allow it to be run by an unprofessional, ignorant manager? He really needs to be retrained in the art of customer care...I really don't like being greeted by the words "yeah, what do ya want" especially when it's the manager himself serving me! Oh and the "regulars" well when you get a "self taught" real ale "expert" (and his wife!) Butting in and telling customers what to drink really puts me off as I can quite easily make my own mind up...and I don't have to be a CAMRA member to know what I'm talking about...thank you very much Mr arrogant! Apparently the foods not to bad (just your run of the mill pub grub!) But we didn't hang around long enough to try it!Only recommended if you're a football hooligan...seriously! I'm not sure what happened here.....my husband and I decided to try The Rutland for food, after eating at other pubs in the area recently, we thought we'd give it a try. Terrible mistake! Upon arrival the pub was quite quiet. We ordered our food and drinks and waited....and waited..... 50 minutes later our food arrived. The man that brought the food to our table basically threw our meals in the table and said 'help yourselves to sauces over ther' fair enough. My husbands burger was not what we ordered and the pork was raw. (I've taken photos which I'll be taking further with The Pub People) I mentioned this to the waitress who came back and said there was nothing wrong with it. I TD her we weren't eating it and she looked at me and walked off!!!!! To be fair I don't think it was her fault, it was so busy by the time our food came and the lack of staff was ridiculous! She came back 20 mins later to offer us a refund, I told her not to bother. I was too angry and I thought i might have said something I would regret! we left after that. Something has gone horribly wrong here. Staff were swearing, moaning they were too busy, it was dirty and the furniture was falling apart. Such a sad shame for what was such a lovely pub once. Highly disappointed and concerned about the whole thing. I would stay away and go to other much nicer establishments in the area. I'll be discussing my concerns to The Pub People when they re-open on Monday after the weekend as I work opposite their office.

We visited for Sunday lunch on our way to see family in the area. The barman was alone but was friendly and helpful despite clearly being busy. There was great range of real ales available. Sunday lunch was available in three sizes, I opted for medium which was just right for me, with a couple of slices of beef, a few roast potatoes, a couple of boiled potatoes, 2 small Yorkshire puddings, a dish of vegetables including tender broccolli florets that were not over-cooked, a jug of gravy and a pot of horseradish cream. My husband had the beef strips in mushroom & cream sauce with rice. We had a couple of drinks each. The whole lot came to less than £25.

I've been twice to this pub for food, the first time I was very disappointed! got there about 15 minutes before they stopped serving food at lunch time, sat down looked at the menu. Everything looked tasty, went to order and they'd decided to stop serving for no apparent reason so I was annoyed to be honest. The second time of visiting was lovely had one of their many cask ales, and chilli con carne and it was decent. I would visit again for sure.

We visited this pub for a bite to eat. The bar staff were lovely & a good atmosphere in the pub. We ordered from the special burger menu which was quirky & reasonably priced. Unfortunately the lady who brought our food let the service down, she almost threw the food down & walked away without asking if we needed anything else. (A basic in my view). No-one checked if the food was ok & we didn't see a staff member again, although a young man (maybe a relative?) was most helpful in finding us some ketchup. My food was good, I had a fish burger & we both agreed the chips were fab! Sadly my partners burger was horrible, it tasted like an old school dinner burger, like the ones that come in a tin. It gave him a bad stomach. I'm sure if we had just stayed for a pint the experience would have been better, sadly let down by the food & food service.

Nice place and atmosphere, no blaring TV and music soft and background, a great place to meet. Good food and reasonable prices on that and beer. Can recommend this place.

A great little pub with character and very different from the vast majority of contemporary pubs and eateries in the town very much in line with the historical side of Chesterfield a must visit pub for its cosy and intimate feel.

Visited the Rutland Arms for the first time after reading and hearing excellent reviews. Unfortunately that was not my experience! After seeing a busy pub, I was very much looking forward to my lunch! I ordered the Chicken Burger with Chips, Salad, Salsa and Coleslaw. The Chicken Burger was nothing but Bland, Boring and Tasteless, stuck between a Dry Warburtons roll. No sauce, No mayo! Just Basic! The Salsa and Coleslaw weren't homemade (Supermarket bought) and in the smallest little pot at the side of my plate. Chips were as stated hand cut ........... But were well overdone and just Horrible. On that basis, I won't be back!

My friends and I were looking for somewhere for a quick meal before attending a show and, after researching on the Internet, The Rutland Arms seemed to fit the bill. We arrived half an hour before they started to serve food, so had a drink whilst we were waiting. Unfortunately, the table was quite dirty with bits of food stuck to it and a sticky feel to it. Bang on 5pm we ordered our food. It took a good three quarters of an hour to be brought out and wasn't cooked very well. However, it was inexpensive and, I guess, you get what you pay for.

Well worth a visit. Very friendly staff, really nice food at fairly reasonable prices. The American burger selections are really nice. Also good for having a afternoon pint or a night out to.

Myself and a friend ate here this evening and it was beautiful xx. I had fish n chips, the chips were home made and delicious, the fish was good too. My friend had cheese n broccoli bake (vegetarian option) and was very impressed X Also at 2 for £10 it's excellent value for money! Will definately return on my next visit to Chesterfield xxxx

I've been coming here for many years and never seen the food side of it as busy as it is now. The Rutland offers a super range of dishes, mainly good, honest British food cooked fresh to order and plenty of it so you never leave hungry, but added to that recently has been a chic Burger menu with a Rock and Roll theme which seems incredibly popular and a specials board offering daily-changing Pies, fish dishes, Barnsley chops and more. The Sunday Lunch is incredible value with even the extra large option at £7.50 costing less than a far smaller lunch in the ghastly chain carvery places. It has become a place for all occasions, from light bites to business lunches and family get-togethers. They also run a superb 2 for £10 menu featuring the likes of Homemade Steak & Ale Pie, Cod & Chips and more. With food this good and plentiful on your plate, why cook at home. One of the few proper pubs left. Cherish it.

Ate here on a Sunday afternoon, after reading the good reviews. The menu outside the pub looked great, but inside the only menu was burgers and hot dogs, plus a limited specials board. The pulled pork on my hot dog was, in fact, just pork, and pretty unpleasant at that. Some of the chips were still raw potato on the inside.Looking at the other reviews, perhaps the usual cook was off, and it seems like a nice enough place for a drink, but I wouldn't eat here again.

Came here on Friday with a load of colleagues from work for a leaving party. We were disorganised, late, came in stages and the poor woman cooking the food almost had a breakdown...but managed to do it internally and still remain happy and calm. How she coped with us I don't know, but she did and gave us hot lovely food. Good honest pub grub and great homemade chips...not frozen or precut. Lovely staff, lovely pub and what a great selection of beers. I haven't visited The Rutland in years but realised I should much more often.

Came here on Sunday and went straight for the burger menu, as I've eaten here a few times and know exactly how tasty they are! They stock Rock n Roll burgers so all their burgers are named in a 50s rock theme, which is quirky. I had the Johnny Cash burger which is tons of melted cheddar, but I added Stilton to mine and it was a lovely hefty slab of it! The fella had South Of The Border, a Mexican themed burger which came with three generous pots of each sour cream, salsa and guacamole, and had a few cheeky nachos on the burger itself. The chips are home made randomly cut and cooked to a nice crisp on the outside soft on the inside. They also have a sauce station, which does deviate from your 'basic' sauces including but not limited to: BBQ Jack Daniel's, Reggae Reggae BBQ and even mint yoghurt! It's a great ale pub too, always getting new ones in to try. Love it here.

Called in with friends on spec late Saturday afternoon. Lovely atmosphere, great range of real ales & if you like, our kind of pub. Knowledgeable & very friendly staff. We decided to have a meal & to be honest was blown away by the quality of the the homemade food for an incredible price. Highly recommend The Rutland for pretty much everything. Obviously it's going to be really busy at peak times but that's always going to be the case at any top place. Will be back next time we're in Chesterfield.

We wenr there one evening but but advised there was at least 1/2 hour delay - so we gave it a miss. We called back later for some of their very good real ale and the chef came out personally to talk to us and apologies -been v busy.So we went back the next nigh and did not regret it. Good food and very good value.Minor downside- sometimes piped music can be a bit loud but it is a drinking place as well.

Living in Calow for the last 6 years this pub has continued to disappoint, Landlords coming and going, inconsistent opening times and food being served/not being served. I'm not sure what made me and my wife go again, we know it's under new management again so thought we'd walk down have a pint and a bite to eat, both went for burgers , both reasonably priced and I have to say both very tasty, for nut much more than any fast food restaurant it was well worth the price, we'll definitely be returning. My only little gripe was you had to walk up to the top bar to order, so no table service, that accompanied by the fact the kitchen shuts at 7pm, we normally like to eat a bit later, but all in all, good value and good food.

Staff rude. Lacked manners and not very welcoming. Pub was clean, that's about it. Too interested in chatting the young men at the bar

Food was good for the price. Friendly staff. Beer was too expensive. That's the case for most pubs, but didn't expect a tenner for a beer & a shandy at a chain eatery. Maybe I'm just old & remember when beer wasn't a rip off.

We visited on November 1st, 2024, and sadly, it was quite a disappointment. While the bar staff did their best, the kitchen service was very underwhelming. By 6:30 PM, they had already run out of the special main menu on the board! The food took a long time to arrive, and when it finally did, it was subpar. The steak & ale pie was more air than a hot air balloon and hardly had any meat. The crust was burnt and tasted like a heated-up frozen pie. The chips were clearly shop-bought oven chips. This was not the level of service we had experienced before. We left feeling quite disappointed. It seems the place is being sold, and I hope the new owners can bring back some quality!
