Coming across Rules by chance, we were attracted by its claim to be “the oldest restaurant in London”. Whether or not that is true, it is certainly has an unusual décor related in part at least to the nearby theatrical establishments. Although the steak and kidney offerings did call, I opted for pheasant which was perfectly cooked while my companion had the duck (or Mallard!). Along with our cocktails, they proved a perfect combination. She started with the onion and cider soup which was much enjoyed. I omitted the starter so I had room for the apple crumble, a substantial and flavoursome offering; I would have liked more custard though. The service was prompt and friendly, the atmosphere restrained but pleasant and overall, as I would expect at these prices (but all too often do not get), the meal was a pleasure.

My family had a table for 6 people in a booth at Rules, my plans changed last minute I tried to increase this to 7 people 24 hours prior. Unfortunately Rules couldn't accommodate the increase and offered to cancel the whole booking however charge £150 cancellation fee. In the end I wasn't able to attend the family dinner who had travelled from Norfolk for a weekend in London. We were all disappointed, but £150 was too much to forfit. As an Executive Assistant at a large Global investment Bank in the City, I change restaurant bookings constantly and have never heard of such absurd restrictions, very shocked they couldn't accommodate. Will NOT be recommending this restaurant.

Historic perfection in London’s Covent Garden! We enjoyed a wonderful pre-theatre dinner here and felt taken back in time with the beautiful decor, thoughtful menu, and top-notch service. Would recommend trying one of the many wild game entree options, along with saving room for dessert as well. Looking forward to returning again someday!

It is the oldest British authentic restaurant in England, opened in Covent Garden in 1798, and is visited a couple of times a year on anniversaries or whenever special guests from Korea visit. I usually enjoy a course meal when I come here, and the quality and flavor of the food is excellent considering the price. Although the coffee price is more expensive than the dessert price, the flavor is strong and deep. Dishes such as pheasant, pork cheek, and rabbit meat are usually dishes that cannot be tasted at other restaurants. Even on weekdays, it is so busy that you cannot enter without a reservation. One of the advantages of this restaurant is that there is a special seat for customers who come alone. Although it is a very popular restaurant frequented by many celebrities, there are more older customers than younger customers, perhaps because of the atmosphere or because the prices are a bit high. Maybe that's why it's good because it's not noisy compared to other restaurants even if all the tables are full. Our booking this time was around lunchtime at Rules and it was nice as not so busy. As usual we started off upstairs in the cocktail bar before being whisked downstairs for our meal, I persuaded my friend to have the steak and kidney pudding as she said it’s been years since she had one. Well, I said, this would be the best place to indulge in one. She wasn’t disappointed and neither were we with our lamb. We only needed one course with veg side dishes and that left us full and contented. Looking forward to another visit before Christmas.

Rules, the oldest restaurant in London, nestled in the heart of Covent Garden, provides a quintessentially British dining experience. Stepping inside feels like entering a piece of history, with its unique decor that celebrates British heritage—playful touches include portraits of crowned heads, detailed hunting scenes, and classic antique paintings. The comfortable banquettes enhance the cozy, inviting atmosphere, making it easy to settle in for an enjoyable meal. The menu offers a variety of traditional British dishes, all perfectly executed with an authentic touch that’s hard to find elsewhere. Their wine selection, though concise, is thoughtfully curated and pairs beautifully with the cuisine. The service is exceptional, with staff that are not only attentive but add a personal touch, making each visit feel special. We return every year, and each time, Rules consistently provides a memorable experience. It’s truly a pleasure to revisit such a timeless establishment.

Classic among London classics. It never fails. Upstairs cocktail bar with classic charm and well-balanced cocktails. A traditional food menu with game dishes depending on the season. Onion soup, different from the French one, is not gratin with cheese. They serve toast with gratin cheese on the side. An excellent duck rillette. A lot of meat that gave it a very special texture. The main course is roast beef with exceptional yorkshire pudding. Really good meat, a perfect point. In this case it was rib, in short a kind of exceptional steak. We also ordered a goose because we were lucky enough to go during the season. Roasted and accompanied with a wine sauce. The bird with a perfect point. Powerful game flavor. It is well worth trying if you visit in season. Extensive international wine list with some references of English sparkling wines. A restaurant to return to whenever you visit this city.

I feel this restaurant has declined In standards since my last visit. Dress code was not adhered to by many which on an evening at 8pm I don’t feel is acceptable. Elder couple in cocktail lounge in sportswear lounged around in leggings and trainers spoilt our pre meal cocktail. As well, there was not background music up there which made it feel very clinical. We were taken down stairs for our meal which was nice… but my food was lukewarm and my partners pheasant was tough. The service however, was good with friendly attentive waiters. I felt the decor was shabby and felt like it needed a good deep clean, for example electric or wires around doorframes needed a dust! Toilets were un acceptable. Didn’t match the ambiance and grandeur of the restaurant, felt more like the loos of a bad Best western hotel lobby. Won’t return. The ‘treat’ we had saved up for as a couple wasn’t worth the money.

The food although pricey was really good! I opted for the best steak I think I have ever, and will ever have! For my starter I had oysters which were perfect with Tabasco sauce provided. The rules cocktails and mocktails are great with friendly staff serving them. However the highlight of the evening was the amazing crumble. It was to die for with amazing custard! This restaurant is the oldest in London and the decor honours this with portraits and paintings. We sat at the table featured in James Bond. The restaurant was also featured in Downton abbey! This was an amazing experience and I would love to come again during game season.

It was wonderful to revisit this restaurant after a long hiatus as a guest of a good friend who had not been before and it didn't disappoint. A fixture of the London dining scene since the 19th century, it is reputedly the oldest restaurant in continual operation in London. Service was excellent, the ambiance was idiosyncratic and special and the food was surprisingly good, particularly the very seasonal Partridge dish which was probably the best we have ever had. And my Welsh Rarebit savoury to finish was likewise probably the best I have had. The Vina Alberdi Rioja Riserva was well priced & excellent

Located near Covent Garden, it was founded in 1798 and claims to be the oldest restaurant in London. I don’t know how reliable this claim is. After all, what can be defined as a "restaurant" (especially in the 18th century)? Rules in the 18th century The type when it was established, and whether there were similar types of restaurants at that time, may be curious questions. If you want to say what is the biggest highlight of Rules, I think apart from its history, it would be the dining environment. The design of the seating area, ceiling, chandeliers, etc. all highlight this, and the various objects hanging on the walls further enhance it. For this quality, Rules’ dining environment is perfect for me. As for the meal, the beef rump for the main meal I ordered this time was well seasoned. It didn’t have any sides at all. It was no problem to eat it on its own. However, the medium rare recommended by the server was so cooked that it couldn’t be eaten with several ribs. It’s the biggest pity to finish chewing it. The biggest highlight of the food and beverage section is the lager, which is served in a very stylish cup and is not on the menu. The cup itself shows the gorgeous style of Rules😆, and the beer that turns amber under the light is really good. Drink, I give this beer five stars in Rules. If you are looking for a restaurant with beautiful lighting and atmosphere to have dinner near Covent Garden or Leicester Square, Rules would be an option to consider.

A place requires early booking, credit card info in advance and RULES like dress code etc. ends up by presenting with mediocre or I will call it no-taste foods (Medium rare beef hard to chew, side dishes are just water-boiled). Do the chefs even taste the foods before serving it? So disappointed with the dinner and all the good reviews are misleading. Definitely an over-rated place and not recommended at all. If this is what you call old school, traditional British foods, feel too bad for folks in London. You pay the price mainly for the atmosphere which may make you feel better.

It's a luxury, but it's worth it. At most I could say that we would have wanted more, but precisely because both main dishes were on point, juicy and tasty. The cocktail was an improvised idea, but we loved it, despite the lot of ice (something normal if we think about preparing cocktails). And the desserts, even though you may think they were mere ice cream, were a bomb of flavor with their cookie and sugar wafer accompanying them. Without a doubt, a luxury, but what luxury and what quality. Delighted.

Since I visited on a Sunday, I ordered Thunder Roast for the main course and chicken for the rest. Is the chicken star anise? The smell was strong and I didn't like the taste, so I regretted leaving half of it 😂 The beef was very delicious! Also, when I checked online for a birthday celebration, they prepared a birthday plate for me ♥️ I had no idea that such a surprise would be available overseas, and it was a very happy moment 🙏♥️ I also ordered tea after the meal. I was grateful that they gave me two cups. There were two of us who couldn't drink at all, so we ordered only sparkling water and after-dinner tea, which was about 60 pounds per person, which was a very reasonable price for a restaurant of this category.

This is our favourite restaurant for British food in London. Great service and a solidly English menu. We have been several times and look forward to going back again.

Fabulous dinner here with family before the theatre. Excellent service, friendly & knowledgeable staff & delicious food - every meal for each of the 6 of us was amazing, including the recommended in-season grouse!

We were 2 couples wanting to try traditional British cuisine and looking for recommendations we decided to go to this restaurant. They are supposed to be traditional but it will only be in the kitchen because their manners are certainly very short, I have never met a person with so much disdain and rudeness. The guy in the hall looked at us with contempt and told me that I couldn't come in because I was wearing shorts below the knee (they have to be pants) that is, you can't go to that restaurant in a skirt either. We left and decided to return the next day this time with pants and to our displeasure again the same bitter boy in the hall, only this time with much more revulsion and a worse tone he tells us that there is no table. Conclusions, book in advance, wear formal clothes and if you are a woman, keep in mind that only pants and pray that the man in the hall is not the same rude person that was our turn.

The service was as excellent as the food. We ate here for a special occasion and it was good value for high quality British cuisine in a beautifully preserved restaurant. Our server was charming and helpful with suggestions, as well as being attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant has a unique atmosphere and we were made to feel very welcome.

Love this place - old school in every way and always good to bring friends from out of town (especially those from across the Atlantic!)

This 225 year old restaurant was worth going to nearing the end of our vacation for my wife and I. We shared the roast beef meal for 2 (47 bp per person) that came with workshire pudding, cooked lettuce, a auj jus style sauce to pour on the beef and a generous spoon full of horseradish if you want it. The sticky toffee pudding was my first experience tasting the traditional dessert was great, nice and warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The draft guinness I ordered came in a cool tinkard (10 bp per pint) For $205, it was pricey but to enjoy a nice full dinner at an historic landmark was a great experience.

We experienced a great hospitality and loved the food and drinks! The choice on the menu was great and Liz was surprised by the dish that was as an extra aside the menu. Also the advised wine pairings were a good combination with the dishes

I'd wanted to visit for a while and finally found time on a recent trip to London. It certainly lived up to it's reputation and is a true institution of British cooking. Outside of game season, there was only ever one serious option for me; Steak and Kidney pudding. It was absolutely phenomenal and whilst Rules is certainly not a cheap restaurant, actually represented good value for money. I would really recommend arriving 45 minutes before your reservation and enjoying a cocktail in the upstairs bar first to really soak up the history of the place. Now that the glorious 12th has come and gone I look forward to a quick return in order to try their famous game cookery.

If you are looking for an English dining experience, this is a must. The oldest restaurant in the city doesn't disappoint. Excellent staff, atmosphere, service, and food. Get the Yorkshire pudding!

Fabulous traditional English fabulously cooked fare in glorious surroundings with impeccable service. On the negative side, having to order (and pay for) roast potatoes (£5 for one potato cut into four) that don't come with a Sunday roast rib of beef at £49/person is both bizarre and poor. Then, I got a bill for £190 for two, where the only alcohol was one beer, with one dessert made up of a service charge and a cover charge. I wouldn't have been surprised if there was a breathing charge. This left a bad taste in my mouth that such an estimated restaurant has to resort to multiple devices to squeeze every last penny from their patrons. Good, it was. Value for money, it certainly wasn't. I don't mind paying £200 for a meal for two if it is a good meal. Properly include roast potatoes in a roast dinner, lose the cover charge, and I would have been likely to have given a tip, resulting in more than you charged me. This was a good meal, but don't use devious methods to take my money. If roast potatoes had been properly included with a roast dinner and the cover charge and service charge had been removed, I would have been more likely to give you a bigger tip. But you took money from me rather than allowing me to elect to reward you for what was a fabulous meal. For this reason, I won't return.

Very little song selections. Several songs would “break” the system and the mics broke twice.

We popped in to make some enquires regarding coming for a pre Christmas lunch, the staff were so welcoming & very helpful with our request.. One of the ladies at reception showed us the restaurant which looked lovely...we came back a bit later to have a drink in the bar, which was lovely, bar staff were polite & equally welcoming. Looking forward to returning soon.

Almost like dining in an art gallery, eggs benny was very well done except the muffin was a bit burn at the bottom.
