Excellent meal and love the restaurant! Had the roast beef dinner and was that delicious and very filling. The best Yorkshire pudding I've ever had! Staff was very friendly and attentive. So glad we went to celebrate my delayed birthday. Will be back every chance I get. The bar upstairs is fantastic. The bartender that day was awesome. Loved the drink he was creating for the dinner menu!

Excellent dinner here last night. The oldest restaurant in London, features game such as quail and venison as well as fresh fish. We had the venison pie, pork cheeks & plaice, all delicious. Guiness is served in pewter tankards. And check out the Observatory (bar) upstairs. A great evening.

This is for me heaven on earth. A very traditional, old fashioned restaurant where you get served by English waiters. The food is very good and substantial. In the DD restaurants you get good but hardly any food. When my son who is 6 ft 5 inch tall struggled to finish his meal I know it is enough. The service is friendly, the ambiente friendly and I cannot think of anything to critisise! I will definetley be back. Thank you all at Rules and I am not paid to write this!!!

Dined here on a lovely sunny day in late April (Tuesday) for lunch. We arrived early and given the option to visit the bar or go to the table. We decided the bar, it’s was really enjoyable, light and airy. I ordered the classic rules cocktail, but with a slight change, which they kindly did but not with what I had requested (a rose liliet rather than dobonnet, they served with white lillet). We all had different starters, fish soup (delicious) Devon crab and . Most of the table ordered the fish pie and I had the duck, which was cooked to perfection. The fish pie, whilst did have more potato than was required, was tasty. We had the cheese plates and they kindly swapped the goats cheese for Stilton. One had the flourless chocolate cake and was very disappointed, dry and lacking flavour. It is a classic restaurant with many dinners being tourists, however, it is classic for a reason. Yes, it’s expensive and there are better restaurants within 100m, but it’s been doing its thing since the late 1700’s.

01st May. I've missed out a couple of dinners there so.... today was excellent as usual. The staff were great and we had a good laugh, the food is just wonderful. See you next Thursday Feb 18th. Another excellent meal here with one of my daughters and her husband. The new menu is out and it all looks so good. End of Jan 2025. This has fast become my favourite restaurant, I've been here with my family about six times now and every single time has been a pleasure. The ambience is excellent, (especially at Christmas), the food amazing and the staff attentive and friendly. I would recommend the 2009 Lirac , one of the nicest wines available but I contacted the vineyard to see about buying some and there is no more stock so we will have to go through Rules stock instead. :-) For a lunchtime treat, a special occasion or visiting from abroad this is one of the nicest places to go. I took my daughter and her husband here as a treat and it was everything you expect. Quintessentially English eccentric at its finest. The staff were very friendly and attentive, the food was just wonderful and the ambience was brilliant. Back again tomorrow with my other daughter :-)

Avoid this overprices tourist trap. Waitress with zero people skills. Staff shaking used tablecloths in our face. Teenagers were served childrens portions at full price. Mediocre food. Staff lied about not having internet access for card payment in an attempt to receive cash payment. Cover charge and service charge on top of already overpriced dishes. A scam from beginning to end.

Oh what a disappointment! We have eaten in Rules more than a few times, but not recently, and I regret to report that for us on this occasion it was no longer the magic experience of the past. We arrived 10 minutes early for our table, to be told it wasn't ready and rushed to the bar. Fair enough we thought, we ordered cocktails then to be told our table was ready, and to bring them with us. This was the first inkling of dropping standards whilst grabbing for money, I'm sure our table was ready, they just wanted to extra round of drinks on our final bill. The food we ate was presented on bare plates, with no attempt to make it look appetising. Two of us ate the fish pie, with more potato than fish, cooked in a glutinous sauce that had been over-thickened. The third member of our party had the steak pudding, again - more pastry than filling. No vegetables, no garnish, in fact, totally unappealing. Mains were delivered to the table before appetisers were cleared, and we felt rushed. The desserts were singularly unappealing too, served quickly and without flourish. When the bill came we were then astonished to find that not only is a cover charge imposed as well as a significant service charge but also that the cover charge is subject to the service charge too. I know for each table it's only pennies, but at the end of the day Rules must be making a few bob or two on this double charging. It will be a very, very long time before we go again - there are far better places to eat in this great city of ours. And the sooner the tourists work this out the better.

This has been my third time going to Rules, albeit up in the cocktail lounge as the waiting list for the restaurant is (quite rightly) months in advance. The team who work the cocktail bar are exceptional and obviously enjoy what they do. Sam has been there each time I’ve been there and he extremely friendly, polite and professional. Their attention to detail is at the top and they treat everyone like royalty as soon as they walk in the door. A fantastic place to be and a beautiful environment that you don’t get to see in any other restaurant / bar. Drinks are not too pricey for such a posh establishment and they give you the best small bowl of nuts you will get in london. Very tasty. Thank you Sam and team again for a special couple of hours. ***Update*** made it back a few months later and got a reservation in the dining room. And at the “Spectre” Bond movie table after a special request. Food was amazing and was quite the experience. Not cheap but that was a given. Highly recommend it for the experience. Service in the restaurant was good, not fantastic; my reservation was 9pm so I think the staff were eager to leave after an hour or so of us being there and so our waitress just left and was replaced with someone else without any communication. Just a little odd for what is meant to be an attention to detail place. I did return to the cocktail lounge a couple of days later and had a great time up there with the usual team giving their “fantastic” service.

I had a shockingly OK experience at Rules. I've been stewing on this for a few weeks. I can't help but think I fell for the most expensive tourist trap in London. Starters: My starter was excellent, but my girlfriend's was not. Quail, served cold, with, for some reason, ice cold slimy carrots. We were wondering if we were in the wrong? It was so cold that it felt intentional. Maybe I'm not cultured enough, but I generally appreciate good food. Mains: Steak with paris butter and a side of chips. It was fine in a vacuum. Absolutely killed me that I made myself a better steak 4 days prior that was tastier, more accurately cooked to temp, and a third of the price. Dessert was really really delicious. Service was lovely. We adored the host up front. I was hoping I'd feel the same about the food. Not worth the money, I'm afraid. Maybe I'm too poor for this kind of establishment. If I could spend that kind of money all the time, maybe I'd be more forgiving.

Dining at Rules feels like stepping into a time capsule... if the capsule served roast dinners fit for royalty. I kicked off with the quail, tender and outrageously succulent, followed by a roast so perfectly executed it made me momentarily consider giving up all modern cuisine. The wine? Delightful, although slightly overpriced. Service was top-notch: impeccably polished, always present, yet never hovering. Desserts were a triumph! The crumble was nostalgic in the best way, and the cider sponge cake? A warm, boozy hug on a plate. The setting is exactly what you’d expect from London’s oldest restaurant. A true classic worth revisiting!

Rules This was our first visit to Rules the oldest restaurant in London and we were in for a real treat. The place is amazing , the food was fantastic and the staff were super friendly. This experience is definitely one I can’t wait to repeat. The restaurant is located a short walk from Covent Garden on maiden lane. We arrived early so that we could enjoy a cocktail in the bar. This is located upstairs and in doing so the history of this restaurant is there for you to see. We entered the bar which is absolutely filled with classic memorabilia before deciding to sit in the pleasant surroundings of the Winter Garden. We chose the Gin Martini and the Sacred Spice Cardamom Negroni to start the afternoon’s experience. We then made our way downstairs to the fabulous dining room to let the festivities begin. This started for me with a London Pride ale served in a silver tankard while we looked at the menu. This is set out with a good selection of starters , mains , sides and desserts. STARTERS - We chose the Stuffed Mussels with a herb butter , garlic and breadcrumbs as well as the Middlewhite Pork Terrine with a spiced apple chutney and sourdough toast. My wife loved the mussels and I thought the terrine was absolutely delicious. MAINS - Here we would be in for an amazing feast as we decided to have the Roast Rib of Beef for Two accompanied by buttered greens , a heavenly yorkshire pudding and the best horseradish ever. We also added dauphinoise potatoes and the chanteney carrots. Everything was cooked perfectly and a pleasure to eat. DESSERTS - After a well deserved rest it was time for desserts. We opted for the Pear and Apple Crumble with Custard and the Rules Golden Syrup Sponge. These were two delicious classic desserts and a fantastic way to to finish a truly wonderful afternoon. With a coffee to finish this brought to an end a fantastic afternoon and one I would highly recommend. This is just how hospitality should be. Friendly and professional staff , amazing food in a classic old school location. Rules is a place full of history and a visit here is something you should try at least once in your lifetime. Our experience was excellent and definitely one we will be repeating sooner rather than later. Many Thanks to all the team for an amazing dining experience and look forward to seeing you again soon.

My husband and I visited this restaurant during our honeymoon in London, and unfortunately, it left us with a disappointing and uncomfortable memory. We had made a reservation in advance and even mentioned that it was our honeymoon, hoping for at least a small gesture or a warm welcome. Instead, we were seated at the table right next to the door — a spot that felt like an afterthought rather than a place for guests celebrating something special. What added to our discomfort was the lack of attention throughout the meal. No one checked in on us, asked how the food was, or offered to refill our water. The service wasn’t outright rude, but it felt indifferent — and that can be just as disheartening, especially on such a meaningful occasion. As an Asian couple, we couldn’t help but wonder if we were being treated differently. Maybe it wasn’t intentional, but the overall experience felt dismissive — as if we were not seen as important guests. That feeling stayed with us long after the meal was over. I hope the restaurant takes this kind of feedback seriously. Everyone deserves to feel welcome and acknowledged, especially when celebrating something as personal as a honeymoon.

The oldest restaurant in London, 1798. I took my bestie here for dinner during her recent trip to London. The food is not bad but the ambience was amazing. I can’t believe it’s a restaurant since 1798, 227 years old. You sensed the history and heritage but you didn’t feel the age when sitting in the restaurant. There are etiquettes of dining at The Rules but they were not extreme about them which was helpful to tourists, I’m sure. This was our biggest disappointment on our trip to England. The restaurant has such a great reputation and we were very excited, but the food was a disappointment and very expensive. We ordered the beef roast for 2 people and it came out pre-sliced and looked like it had been sitting out for a while. It wasn't the color of fresh cut meat. It was also riddled with gristle (not just fat) that you had to cut around. And it was cold. The Yorkshire pudding was not horrible but not great. The dessert was delicious, but we came here for the meat and rather than being the highlight, it was miserable. I hope ours was just a one off experience, but we will certainly never go back.

If I could do 0 stars I would do it. When we arrived, the host wouldn’t let us in because we had a kid under seven years old and we were at the restaurant before 7pm witch apparently meant that we could not eat because of the age. They had not mentioned that when we had the reservation and we told them that there were kids coming . The rude host pointed his finger and said get out of the restaurant. When we told our waitress that we had to leave, she was shocked because she didn’t even know that that was a rule. The restaurant rules had a lot of rules. Inside the restaurant, it was so stuffy. We called up and made a reservation. Agreed on the time/date, though the staff we spoke to were unfriendly and didn't seem like they wanted to book us in. They didn't even ask for our name at first until we volunteered it. When we arrived, we were told that there was no reservation under our name and we had to leave, which ruined a special celebration night we had planned. I wonder how much of it was intentional, as my mum who made the booking is not English and has an accent, and perhaps we aren't their ideal 'posh' customers. Terrible service, unfriendly and snobby, wasted our time. Wouldn't recommend going unless you're wealthy enough to impress them.

What a disappointment!…went here to experience the history of the place and what I believed would be excellent food and service, this was not the case. My partner and I both had whiskey sours before we were shown to our table, which were average in taste, we’ve definitely had better. We were shown to our table after asking a member of staff if our table was ready, bread was delivered to our table with butter but no side plates to put the bread on, I requested one, one was delivered to me, none for my partner. We had starters which were uninspiring followed by equally uninspiring mains. I choose the rabbit Cassoulet, which is meant to be a rich stew, this consisted of a bean stew base, within which his one slice of black pudding cut in half, upon which rested two little rabbit legs which were not incorporated within the stew, the legs while tender inside were dry on the outside. My side of pear and walnut salad arrived without dressing (rocket, whole walnuts and pear slices, with small flecks of blue cheese) was very dry so I had to order dressing. My partners steak and kidney pie was a bit doughy but he covered it in gravy so it was edible. We had planned to have pudding but both of us were so disappointed we didn’t bother and ordered the bill as we’d had enough of Rules. This place is trading on its past glory days, those days have gone and all that remains is a tired looking interior with mediocre food and service.

The dinner and service were excellent. The steak and kidney pie was as delicious as expected and a generous portion of rabbit rillettes to start was equally good. The atmosphere is a bit of a step back in time, in a delightful way. The non-alcoholic menu was lacking.

Absolutely one of the best experiences I had in London so far. Very kind and prepared personnel, delicious food and wonderful location. We chose steamed alibut and roasted pork belly & seared scallop, everything absolutely tasteful and very good. Dessert with a vanilla baked cheesecake, the perfect closure for this perfect dinner. We will come back for sure next time in London.

There’s just something about Rules. Classic English menu flawlessly executed. Fantastic pies and great roast lunches on Sundays. Very hard to beat

The decor looks old and tired and the food is in a similar vein Very underwhelming food , especially considering the cost Used to be a wonderful gem , now it reeks of shades of old glory Won't be returning anytime soon

Visited during Christmas time and somehow very luckily got a table within 20 minutes. Helpful and pleasant staff and tasty food, especially dessert. Not that many vegetarian options. Tasteful decorations. Recommended!

We had our friends from the states over and took them here to try British food… everyone had a great time and the food was delicious! The only reason I marked the food down by a star was due to the cocktails which were poor value for money. Thank you Sophie for the great service and crumble recommendation, it was excellent!

Decent food but could be better and lacking authenticity of traditional British dishes which is disappointing The potted shrimp is served with thick sourdough toast and not Melba toast also lack the right spices The steak and kidney pudding was good but the gravy is very average Sides were good as was the Stilton which is still exemplary and served with style The wines are good

Excellent food and I'd recommend the treacle tart with clotted cream. The surrounds are full of interesting item. The staff are professional, they discrete but on hand to give advice.

Another excellent meal at Rules. This is our go to place to celebrate occasions. It is a tradition British restaurant with comfort foods like sticky toffee pudding and steak and kidney puddings.

Classic restaurant with good food and professional staff. We had a great dinner with friends. Oysters were shucked well, all the food was delicious.

Great service and food. There's nothing more to say. This is a wonderful restaurant that completely overturns the stereotype held by Japanese people that British food is bad. Reservations can be made online, so we recommend making a reservation. The quality of the service was top-notch, and the staff's meticulous service spirit shined through. When I asked for a photo, he casually looked at the Japanese language on his smartphone camera and said thank you for coming from Japan. As for the food, this restaurant serves traditional British cuisine, and we recommend the traditional British roast beef. However, for us petite Asians, the portions are quite large, so I think the appetizer, salad, and main dish will fill you up. As for the price, there is no doubt that it is expensive, but it is not outrageously expensive, and it cost about 10,000 yen per person. When I thought about it, I felt that although it was a high-end store, it had surprisingly good cost performance. The store had a great atmosphere and was a very nice store. I strongly feel that I would like to visit there the next time I have a chance to come to London.

Tried to book for a party of 5 on a Sunday evening but their reservation system showed no availability however I found that many slots were available if I tried for 4 or 6 people.I emailed to query this and was told by a rude woman called Natasha that if I wanted to book a party of five I could join a waiting list but if I booked for six I'd be expected to bring six and would be charged no show fees if only 5 attended. All I can say is they live up to their name in inflexibility and arrogance. Why turn away business when you clearly have capacity?

The Staff just make a visit to Rules special. The food is fantastic and I like the decor but overall it's the staff that makes the difference.

Visited with a friend who had booked our table a couple of months in advance except we found out on the day she hadn't! We were able to be squeezed in a little later than planned, and were very glad because it was a fantastic experience. We had a couple of cocktails in the winter garden bar before our table was ready, and then we were treated to one of the best meals I've ever had. The steak and café de Paris butter was incredible, the Paxton and Whitfield Stilton was creamy and delicious and the sticky toffee pudding which we had to share because, well, we were full, was gooey and light and sweet and sticky and perfect. Wonderful service and a compete treat.

Amazing historical restaurant that you will need to book well in advance. It's not a cheap restaurant, but you're paying for quality of food and service. Steak and kidney pie are £25. Irish coffee was £16

Literally the best meal we’ve had in London. The fish and chips and the chicken pot pie were to die for. The Hugo Spritz was so refreshing and the best drink I’ve enjoyed. Thank you for your service and hard work Roland and team!!

Went there for late drinks cause everything else was already closed but it's not your usual miserable casino bar. Place is buzzing and fun and had an Arab DJ at the time which made it even more fun!
