It was wonderful to see the Ruddy Duck re-opening, albeit temporarily in the library - which was decorated beautifully for the evening. The 5-course tasting menu we enjoyed was exceptional, my particular highlights being the beef cooked two ways which came with a scrummy potato gratin and our dessert, a superb creation of rhubarb and ginger, showing off the best of local produce. The kale even came from the walled gardens at Wortley Hall! Our servers David and Brogan were both warm, friendly and knowledgeable about both the menu and the venue and we'll be delighted to dine here again. A week later and I'm still thinking about the homemade rhubarb cocktail that David created for me!

We booked the Ruddy Duck tasting menu as a birthday treat. From the very start we were given a great warm welcome. The staff at Wortley Hall and the ruddy duck are always very friendly. The food presentation was fantastic, the flavours perfectly balanced. The course sizes were perfect, and allowed you to really savour each plate. The room tables were well distanced which allowed everyone to feel comfortable. Although spaced out there was a nice ambiance. We'll be back as soon as restrictions are lifted!

Scratching my head wondering where to take my lovely wife Cathy for a special treat I came across by chance a local booklet advertising local businesses and saw the name "Ruddy Duck" Restaurant at Wortley Hall not far from where we live. I'd never heard of it and normally I would book a table in Leeds or York that are a bit more renowned for a touch of fine dining, so I took a chance and booked the "Signature Menu" Thank goodness for that small booklet because this place is an absolute Gem, no more Long trips to York or Leeds I'm a Barnsley Lad and I've found Quality on my own doorstep. Right from us arriving we were greeted by "Mel" who within 5 mins of chatting with her made as feel as if we were regulars and she carried on making us feel special throughout the entire evening then the real "Treat" started to arrive with warm homemade breads of different flavours including squid ink bread sticks with a Truffle and Mascapone dip OMG wonderfully made by Mels colleague Amelia, we then moved on to the decadent Fish course with a Langustine and Cocunut sauce that needs bottling and selling wholesale The Beef qcame next Tender accompanied by a cauliflower purée which just confirmed Matt the Head Chef Loves his Local produce and definitely understands the marriage of flavours 2 fantastic deserts followed and of course the Chocolate Fondant did what all Chefs hope it Ooooozzzed out hot creamy chocolate once the fork went in. I started by saying Intook a chance when booking well the only chance is We are coming back this is fine dining at a Michellin Star standard and wait for it - it only cost £30 a head !! My boys pay that much for a certain Pizza delivered. Thank you Mel, Matt and Amelia for making our Anniversary special and for the extra treats we will be back in April

Went with family as a belated 60th birthday gift. As we had 10 in our party we had to pre-order our food which was fine. Menu quite restricted, but it’s changed regularly due to what’s in season which is great. Ordered via email but was phoned at least 3 times after, asking to re-send the food choices, even though they had them all along, which was slightly frustrating! Unfortunately, due to the weather, 4 of our party arrived about 20mins late which led to the atmosphere becoming quite tense - staff were whispering and constantly pacing about which put the rest of us on edge even though we couldn’t do anything about it! I totally understand why but this should have been done away from the customers who were on time! The food itself was lovely, with fantastic fresh, local ingredients. The staff were attentive and took our drinks orders promptly, however the ‘house’ red wine was very poor and lacking any real flavour which was a shame. The atmosphere mellowed as the evening progressed and we all left feeling happy and very full! Can recommend for the food, very enjoyable, thankyou.

I can't praise the staff enough for the effort they put in to making sure we all enjoyed every aspect of our evening. The restaurant itself is intimate and has a lovely cosy feel to it, you can see your food being cooked by the brilliant chefs and the presentation of the food is pure artistry. My husband and I went for our 10 year wedding anniversary meal. Firstly the food was wonderful. We’ve dined at Michelin star restaurants and the food here was on par. The main issue was the fundamentals of the restaurant to match the excellence of the food. We firstly struggled to get into the restaurant - main door shut and the only way in was via a wedding party. the courtyard outside would be MUCH better if vans weren’t parked there. Maybe some hung outdoor twinkly lighting and seating. That would be idilic! The beer was almost completely off tap apparently due to the wedding. This surely can’t happen for the restaurant? The room was incredibly brightly lit which didn’t offer a relaxing feel. The courses came out way too quickly - a slower approach would have worked well. Maybe a place to relax with a pre-drink/post drink would have been nice. We met a man who seemed to be passionate about making the tweaks needed - so we’re eager to return in the coming months.

Brought my husband here for his birthday. There is an amazing tasting menu which unfortunately there isn't a vegetarian option (i am vegetarian and I asked when I booked a week or two in advance and was told that it was only as stated on the website and could not be altered), it has to be ordered by the entire table so we couldn't order this. We had the a la carte menu. Only 1 vegetarian option per course but it did state to speak to the chef if necessary. Really enjoyed the food. Very rich. Very well presented and well thought out. Personally a vegan option would not go amiss on the menu either (also works as a second vegetarian option).

Came to Wortley Hall for my 2 year anniversary with my partner and we ate at the Ruddy Duck for all our meals during our stay and it was undoubtedly the best food we have ever eaten. Cooked to perfection as well as presented beautifully with a chef who is clearly passionate about the food and standards. The breakfast was varied and cooked to perfection with impeccable service. For dinner we had the Beef Ragu and Chedar and Onion bread for starter, Ribeye steak for mains, ice cream for desert and each course on both nights was perfect. My partner being an nut allergy sufferer, we were so well catered for and all the staff especially the chef was so considerate and informative with all the ingredients of the menu and we certainly felt at ease with this. Our meal was very nicely cooked, tasty, with prompt attentive service. I enjoyed every forkful. My wife was less happy, but I think it can sometimes come down to making the wrong choice from the menu. I tasted her main course and thought it was delicious. If it was in London it would be mobbed by customers, but it was very quiet on the two nights we were there. The chef clearly knows what he is at, with some fancy flourishes, but the ethos is heavily towards local produce.Prices are reasonable for the food and the wine too. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

The signature menu was fabulous. Not just good,, superb. The price was reasonable for both the food and the wine. The only question is why was it only half full on a Friday night? Wortley Hall itself is lovely, The bar menu also has delicious and reasonably priced food, ive eaten there 3 times recently an its been excellent. The staff are delightful and helpful. Highly recommended

We went to Wortley Hall on a Wednesday evening to have a meal at the Ruddy Duck restaurant - don't be put off by the basic appearance of the entrance and bar, friendly helpful barman. The restaurant itself is very nice. We had the signature menu at £45.00 for two if booked 24 hours in advance. The food was absolutely brilliant, five courses of wonderful tasting food. We were served by Ellie who was very attentive, helpful with a happy demeanour . We are local to the area, but having found this gem we will be back again.

My partner and I visited Wortley Hall yesterday evening for a special occasion and after we'd had a walk around the grounds and sampled a drink from the bar we both had the signature menu at the Ruddy Duck. The quality of all of the food was excellent and the range on offer from this set menu was varied and imaginative and above all very very tasty, Plus a special mention for the waitress who performed the role to perfection. We'll be back.

Would recommend this place. I have had valentines dinner here last year and this year we had booked in for the evening meal as we were staying at Wortley Hall. There's two menus to choose from Alacart and set menu. We chose out of the alacart ....we started we scallops ...they were delicious serviced with a wonderful cauliflower purée ....however we only got two scallops so I though the portion could have been better....at least three. Husband had salmon and I had braised beef and sirloin dish....unfortunatley the menu didn't say it was braised in red wine which I wasn't to my taste but I'm sure other people would have said it was a nice dish, luckily the other part of the beef dish wasn't as strong tasting and wasn't brainsed so ate that. Husband enjoyed salmon in broth. We loved our puddings.....salted caramel pudding with ice cream and dark chocolate pistachio and ice cream. I wanted mushroom ravioli with truffle oil for main but it wasn't on the menu. I couldn't find any type of vegetarian pasta dish. Our waiter was fabulous...I think she has worked there a while.

I was with a group of friends, staying at the hotel. We enjoyed a meal at the Ruddy Duck and I think everyone was pleased but I was particularly pleased with the vegetarian meal. Sweet potato and ricotta roulade. I also enjoyed the jaffa cake ice cream. Beautifully served and good sized portions.

Ate hear whilst staying at the hotel. Menu had a fair range to choose from and the portion sizes were ok. They changed the chips for potatoes which was good, however my steak was not good quality and no apology offered when I raised the point 25% of it was fat and grissle. If in the area again I might walk up to the pub in the village?

Although we eat out a couple of times a week, I have never come across the Ruddy Duck until I looked on TripAdvisor to do a 'best near me' search. I know Wortley Hall very well but had never thought to eat there as you would not guess that the food offer in contained within a slightly dowdy hall would be so good. The Restaurant itself is minimal on decorations but intimate which creates an atmosphere. We went as a couple on a night without the kids. The set menu was great, filling and inventive and certainly contends with any of the rosette restaurants around us locally. Good value and good service. The place was not so busy when we went but I can see it getting to be more of a regular for us. Well done!

We visited the Ruddy Duck on a Wednesday night, and were excited to experience what appeared to be high end dining from what we had read on their Web site. It was certainly a tale of two extremes. The restaurant is lovely. Romantic tables, candles, proper silver service and attentive staff. The food was excellent. We ordered the Veloute and the Duck to start, both of which tasted amazing. My belly pork main was incredible, and my wife's risotto was perfectly prepared, with a gorgeously soft duck egg on top. We couldn't decide whether to share the toffee pudding or dark chocolate parfait, so asked the chef to choose. He sent out half and half, and the presentation and flavours were wonderful. A very good meal in a lovely restaurant, with good wine and service to accompany it. However! Be warned. Whilst the restaurant is incredible, the rest of the Wortley Hall location is at the other end of the spectrum. Sadly in serious need of redecoration and modernisation. The reception area is quite depressing, with fake flowers to try and lift the mood. As you walk through to the restaurant, it is like visiting some tired old folks home that has simply been forgotten in time. The bar is exceedingly poor, with a complete lack of atmosphere and more akin to a working man's club than an enticing before dinner location. There is no flow to the building at all, and we actually walked into the dining area by mistake whilst looking for the bar. You should also ensure you have extremely bright headlamps, as they have clearly decided to save money by removing all semblance of lighting on the drive. This does make finding the hall, parking and getting back out somewhat challenging. Overall, our meal was lovely and the waitress very good. It was well priced at £90 for 2 including a bottle of excellent prosecco and a tip. You do, sadly, have to accept that the Hall itself is very run down and we would recommend avoiding the bar. However, for the food alone, we will certainly go back.

Stayed in the hotel and booked a table in the Ruddy Duck we chose the signature menu which was 4 courses The young lady that served us was lovely and told us which course she was serving and what it was The restaurant is very small and you need to book well in advance Only one criticism and that was that the wine was not opened at the table and we were not offered to taste it , apart from that enjoyed the food and staff were great Thank you

This is a small restaurant which was full on the night we (nine of us) had dinner. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, very attentive service. The price for a four course dinner was around £27.00. The food was the standard of a class restaurant in Central London. Excellent

Visited with my husband and parents to celebrate my mums birthday. We could not have asked for much more, arrived at the restaurant to find we were the only diners which concerned me a little on a Saturday evening but it just made it feel even more special. The waitress was brilliant, the food was amazing and I couldn't recommended it highly enough. Little touches and excellent twists on traditional original breadsticks were great, it is obvious that the chef loves his/her job and cooks to impress the taste buds. Before our sweet arrived the waitress brought a slate with hand pipped white chocolate "happy birthday " adorned with hand made fudge and lightly fragranced grapefruit Turkish delights/jellies. A lovely touch! Lighting a little too bright and more candles would be lovely but will stop us returning.

Restaurant empty at 8pm on a Thursday night, apart from me. Lighting was very dim, difficult to read, which was important as I was dining alone. Piped music throughout meal as an atmosphere-substitute. Very nice humus/bean-stick appetizer. Downhill to the main course, with tough steak full of gristle, old mange-tout peas, that were too stringy to eat easily. Other vegetables cooked well, eg not too much, but overall very disappointing. After complaining, was refunded £2.50 out of £19.45 bill. Not very impressive.

I have been aware of the Ruddy Duck since its inception, although for a variety of reasons I had never visited until last Saturday when my wife and I booked to have a belated meal to celebrate my 55th birthday. We were very pleased to see that there was a tasting menu on which we opted to take (had to be taken by whole table which is common with tasting menus I believe). The restaurant did lack a bit of atmosphere as it was relatively quiet on the night we visited. I believe that it is intended that the open kitchen will return in the not too distant future which I think would add greatly to the atmosphere. The decor is pleasant enough but the modern, silver light fittings are possibly out of keeping with the rest of the room. However I can forgive decor if the food speaks for itself, which it most certainly did. As with other recent reviews customers in The Ruddy Duck were looked after by Melissa when we were there. She was friendly and attentive without being intrusive and she helped make our evening really enjoyable. The only small problem with only having one member of staff on its that there may be nobody to greet guests and if you have not been to the hall before, you may not know where you need to go. Now to the food which as I said was a tasting menu. We started with bread baked in the kitchens and sea salt butter (not sure where that comes from). We were served focaccia and a wholemeal bread and both were very tasty I normally have unsalted butter but the salted butter was a great accompaniment to the bread and I liked the way in which it was served The first course (proper) was in essence a tomato salad but it was made up of 3 types of heritage tomatoes, some very tasty Golden Cross Goats Cheese and a very fresh lemon and basil pesto. I thought the dish worked very well, although people such as my wife who are not fans of fresh tomatoes would be perhaps a little less enthusiastic. The fish course was King Scallops with Charred Corn, with Pickled Scottish Girolles, Spelt and Parmesan. Now Scallops I would never choose and Corn I have never found to be worth the effort of eating but I reassessed my views on both last Saturday. The scallops were cooked to perfection, and the small amount of caramelisation on the corn worked well with the acidity of the Girolles to highlight the 'Kingies'. The piece De resistance however was the spelt and Parmesan, added yet another layer of flavour and raised the dish from very good to stunning. The dish that I think was the most 'Cheffy' was what followed next which was Crispy Courgette Flower stuffed with ricotta and spinach and served with a tomato coulis. The menu at the Ruddy Duck gives no indication of how the dishes are to be served and in the case the stuffed courgette flower was deep fried and taking the first bite was a joy when you tasted the lovely rich creamy ricotta. The flavours got even better when taken with some of the tomato coulis. I am a confirmed carnivore but I could happily order the full portion off the normal menu as a main dish it was that good. The main course was Wortley Lamb Loin, Smoked Onion, Sprouting Broccoli and Crispy Sweetbreads and this was perhaps the weakest dish in the menu. It was only very good. A simple dish very well executed. I loved the mild smoked onion but some people are not fans of smoky notes (it takes all sorts). We had little idea what was to be served as dessert from the description which read as "Peaches, Cream Cheese, Oats, Raspberry, Lemon Balm and as this dish is yet to feature on the menu or so I was told, I won't spoil the surprise suffice to say it's too die for and I am sure Greg Wallace on Masterchef would love the sweet tastes married with stringent raspberry and lemon flavours. A superb meal was rounded off with coffee and petition fours. Actually we were so full that we took them home and enjoyed them the following day. At £35 a head the meal was great value and we enjoyed a very pleasant Italian Rose for under £20. It had taken me almost three years to get there but it won't take me three years to go back. In Matt Robinson, Wortley Hall have a young Head Chef of the highest calibre. He has raised the bar and Wortley Village probably now boasts two of the best Chefs around. If like me you have thought about going to The Ruddy Duck but have never got round to it, then do it now. This was one of the best meals I have had the year, if not the best, and I really can't see any food lovers being disappointed by their visit to The Ruddy Duck. Thanks to Matt and his brigade for cooking such a 5 star meal and thanks to Melissa for the equally good service.

Had a meal here as part of a slightly disastrous nights stay. The menu had a nice selection of local dishes and the food was presented beautifully. The lamb was beautifull. The restaurant itself is pretty unappealing, lacking in character and decor despite the Hall's outward appearance. I wouldn't call it a romantic place for a couple, despite it only being couples dining there that night. Could be so much more..

We visited purely after reading the very positive reviews on Trip Adviser. I phoned up, after hours on Thursday evening , leaving a voice message, and to my surprise my booking enquiry was answered just 10 minutes later confirming a table was available. We arrived as booked at 7pm Saturday evening. The Ruddy Duck (RD) restaurant is eventually sign posted but to new visitors such as ourselves the best advice is head straight to Wortley Hall, stay in the car and follow the main drive way in. As you reach the side of the hall bear sharp right and park under the trees. (The parking at the front of the hall is usually full and there isn't room to turnaround at the end.)We walked into the stone courtyard and found RD room to be part of the Wortley Hall buildings and off to the left in a small but nicely decorated dining room with effectively silver service provided. To the right is a main bar ( also used for events & weddings). The bar soon became very busy as the wedding celebration began but this couldn't be heard in the RD dining room. The meal and service were perfect, as TP comments suggested. Service was provided by an excellent sole hostess called Melissa. Totally committed, very helpful and with the quality of the food made the evening special. (The dining room only contained about 9 tables and only had two bookings this evening and is apparently much busier in the week with conference guests booking meals.)We had three courses and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and quality of the food served; especially the rich pepper sauce on the steak choices. The service provided by Melissa through the evening was 5 star. The only thing to detract was the time taken cook the food which I would estimate was 30 minutes waiting for every course which felt slow given we the first of only two tables on the night. But overall we had a lovely family meal and would use it again and thoroughly recommend to other family and guests. (We also found that overnight rooms could be booked, if not booked for events at a very reasonable £80 per night for a twin room, and has beautiful views and vistas.)We didn't see the rooms so cannot rate them rate but Wortley Hall is in an excellent location and RD restaurant is now on our list of places to visit again. Four very satisfied customers and thank you Melissa.
