We have visited in the past and always been reasonably happy. Today was not a good experience. The bread was stodgy for both the egg mayonnaise baguette and the rarebit. The egg was congealing and the ‘seasonal salad’ was just a mishmash of little bits! So rather expensive at £27.85 for the above plus two traybakes and a small pot of tea. Sadly highly unlikely to return.

Was genuinely shocked at the price of the cakes but imagined we would get a decent portion, one of us did, one of us didn’t, disappointing and very expensive for what you got. £16 for a coffee, can of pop and two pieces of cake !

A first class service with excellent food and drink in a lovely environment. Patrick the manager is to be commended for his outstanding acheivement in creating a clean and cheerful environment with well above average foods and drinks, all at reasonable prices. He is an asset to Leighton Moss. Thank you to all staff on duty when we called in for lunch before enjoying the Reserve/We look forward to our next visit.

Visited the reserve and cafe twice this month and found the food delicious although a little expensive. Tried both quiches and they were sooo tasty, even cold the cheese & tomato one was yummy. I also had the fudge & toffee square which I loved. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to return, although if you are on a budget there are plenty of picnic tables if you prefer to take your own food.

Superb local pies for lunch today. Steak and Ale Radford’s pies were just the job for a warming lunch on a cold day in February. Served by friendly staff in a lovely clean cafe. Plenty of choice, some very tempting cakes which we will have later!

Extremely disappointing. First of all we love Leighton moss, this is purely a review for the cafe in the hope that they will improve and match the standard of the reserve. Visited for a quick bite to eat at lunchtime. Poor value for money-rarebit was nearly £8 and consisted of half a ciabatta with cheese and a small spoonful of coleslaw and a few crisps. No salad or greenery. I would be embarrassed to serve this for the price people pay. Other food looked to be of a similar standard. Such a shame as the reserve is a lovely day out, but the cafe isn’t worth visiting in my opinion. Fingers crossed they can improve but we won’t be returning.

I hate to have to write this review as I genuinely love RSPB and Leighton Moss Reserve. Today I ordered a full English breakfast at £9.50, I thought it must be special at that price. When the food arrived I had 1 sausage, 1 bacon, 1 fried egg covered in a crispy skin, 1 hash brown, 1 tomato, beans, mushrooms and 1 toast all of which was cold. I was ravenous after having an early morning start and travelling 1.5 hours to the reserve. The hash brown and tomato was under cooked, the egg overcooked. I did want to take the food back however there was a large queue and a lot of busy staff in the kitchen. Whilst watching the kitchen I could see that food was being reheated in the microwave. On the way home I quickly started to feel unwell and have been vomiting, a very upsetting experience. I was fine before I had this meal, i don't intend to visit the cafe again after such a bad experience I'm afraid.

Have eaten here twice recently. Very disappointed both times. Dreadful ciabatta soggy and luke warm. Second time full english breakfast. Mushrooms stone cold sausage terrible, everything else very poor.Best thing was the coffee out of a machine. Pork and apple barm was ridiculous, fat left on the pork and an absolute mountain of apple sauce making it impossible to eat without making a real mess all over the plate. I suggest stop trying to be something that you are not. Good plain soups and sandwiches. And hot breakfasts are not too much to ask for !

I've always thought the food here was great but yesterday's quiche was tasteless cold and 'lardy'. Served up with an egg cup full of salad and dressing that I didn't ask for. £9.30 for this and a fruit tea doesn't feel like value for money. I'm sure you can do better than this. People don't mind paying for quality. You need to up your game.

Cold winter walks and sitting in hides looking for elusive otters and Bittern bring on a special type of cold and hunger that can only be satisfied with warm food and lots of it. Despite the ongoing Covid difficulties and reduced menu, this lovely little cafe still delivers. Choice of pies, soup, toasties, breakfasts , cakes and good choice of warm drinks to keep the cold at bay. We were staying locally so we were able to visit several times in one week. This gave us the opportunity to work our way through the choice of delicious pies. Served with mushy peas and gravy , our favourite was steak and ale, although the cheese and onion was very tasty too. Staff are friendly and welcoming and the cafe was spotlessly clean. Top marks RSPB!

We visited the cafe as part of our visit to the reserve which we usually enjoy. The cafe isn't fully open yet, only take away so tables are provided outside. It was a nice sunny day so that wasn't particularly a problem. However in my view the one way system is Ill considered giving people the long walk around the building once they are loaded up with their hot drinks and snacks. It would seem more sensible to have the entry to the cafe through the shop or by the toilets and then have the shorter walk from side door out to the outdoors tables. I had a ham salad sandwich which was ok, however I noticed that the bread was a bit dry, I suspect not baked freshly that day. I suspect maybe they had over bought for the bank holiday if visitor numbers didn't live up to the predicted numbers. Disposable cups for the tea and coffee, which is not ideal going forward and I hope that normal service will be resumed very soon. My husband had the scone and jam and found that the scone was ok but again, not freshly baked. There was no knife or other implement to spread the cream and jam so he had to improvise with my tea stirring stick which doesn't quite feel the same special experience! We didn't feel we could go back as it would have meant taking on the long winded one way system. I don't understand why the cafe isn't fully open as we are allowed indoor hospitality now and there are lots of Windows to open up there. However, we were at least able to get some refreshment for which we were very grateful.

Have tried this cafe 3 times just to check it’s not been an off day. It’s really not for me, coffee & tea ( I’ve tried both) not nice, cake was stale. Yes I wanted to take it back but having a teenager with me who looked mortified that I was going to complain I didn’t. To make it worse it wasn’t cheap. I’ve also had hot panini, that wasn’t good either. Can only think after so many hours getting cold & wet bird watching most customers will settle for anything. To be honest I wanted to give a rating of one but didn’t because the staff are volunteers I believe?

We came here after a walk through the reserve with my twin 20 month old nieces. I asked if there were any high chairs and the response was to point at the other side of the cafe and say 'there's some over there'. It would have been nice if the member of staff had helped and not left me to haul two heavy wooden high chairs right through the cafe trying to avoid tables chairs and other diners. I agree with other reviewers on the comment that the furniture is very functional and not very comfortable, and doesn't really reflect the prices charged which would suggest a more upmarket venue. The serving staff were really lovely and helpful, andclearly hardworking, but seemed a little overwhelmed with the number of people and there was permanently a large queue. The local apple juice was excellent , as were the scones and hot drinks, and all the cakes on offer looked really good. It wasn't a particularly relaxing experience but on the other hand its wonderful to see a place which does such great work so busy. Perhaps a few aesthetic touches could make a big difference.

Leighton Moss is well-known as it has been the venue for Sprngwatch and Autumnwatch on occasions. The upper floor cafe is very good, if a bit cramped for space. It is very popular as many of the visitors go in there for a drink and/or snack afterwards. One important plus (system wiped a lot of this out then) is that one gets 10% discount on cafe goods. PS There is a Stanner lift between the floors.

I have visited this coffee shop on visits to RSPB Leighton Moss several times at different times on different days, and have never experienced what I would class as prompt and efficient counter service. I am not talking about hot food, which the cafe boasts is always freshly cooked, but just tea and cake. The problem is that the person serving the tea and cake usually also has to operate the till, instead of as in many other similar establishments, where one person serves then you move down to a second person on the till to pay. They will probably claim they haven’t enough staff for this, or enough room etc. but there always seems to be people standing around chatting, with no great sense of urgency. They don’t even clear up, as you are requested to clear your own table and stack the trays in shelves. The tedious queueing definitely puts me off visiting the cafe, which is a shame as the food is good. The catering manager needs to get a grip of this as the operation could certainly be made more efficient.

The Cafe area now look tired, the food offered leaves a lot to be desired, we had a special ciabatta which took ages to arrive, the Cook didn't know what was to go into it and had to be told by the lady taking the orders, when it arrived it hadn't been cooked through and was Awful. In this day and age every one making a Latte, should be able to do so, the latte arrived in a small cup, exceptionally strong and had a poor taste. The selection of food options were to say the least very Poor. The staff need to visit other RSPB cafes and see what they provide. Maybe they should Visit RSPB Arne and see what can be done rather than the slop served. Overall very disappointing. We left and went elsewhere for food. The cost of the food and drinks is heavily overpriced and suspect that they only get away with it because its on the reserve.

I arrived as the centre opened and ordered the regular, rather than the large, English breakfast with tea. The tea was served immediately, a teapot with an extra pot of boiling water. I had a little wait for the meal as I had arrived just as they were starting to cook. Overall the food was excellent, however the plate was a little small for the serving so one had to eat carefully to avoid beans on the table! The ingredients, locally sourced, were also excellent. The following walk was superb with a long sighting of an otter playing half way across the lake and en entertaining flock of teal. A visit to be repeated.

We visited the reserve which is fantastic. Before heading off on a long car journey we decided to have lunch in the cafe, thinking it would be reasonably quick and pleasant. Sadly it was neither. The staff seemed to be completely overwhelmed - it was busy but there were no queues at the counter. We ordered 2 sandwiches, waited 25 minutes, so I asked how long and was told it would 10 minutes. After another 12 minutes or so I checked again and was told it would be a further 15 minutes. I don't have any particular issue with waiting but I would like to be told when ordering if there's likely to be a lengthy wait so I can choose whether to wait or look elsewhere and not to waste so much time. We gave up and got a refund as we needed to get on the road. Perhaps they were just having a really tough day but it really could have been handled better.

Leighton Moss cafe has always been an imaginative and very satisfying visit. Now, those of us of alternative dietary persuasions seem to have sparked the chef's interest. Gluten free cakes have become standard but these have recently been joined by a delicious vegan cake. The Vegan Options menu is in its infancy but, with the obvious goodwill of the establishment, will no doubt blossom!

Visited here today as we were at the reserve, excellent food but almost £4.00 for a tiny bowl of soup and small amount of bread! Tea and coffee were both very good, nice strong tea and delicious coffee. The lady serving wasn't very helpful, she didn't mention that was supposed to take my own bread from the counter when I ordered the soup. The menu said 'Soup and a roll' but it wasn't a bread roll, just a slice from a French stick. When she brought the soup over she just said 'Did you get your bread roll'? When I said that I hadn't, it would have been nice for her to have said 'I'll bring it over' since there was no mention of me having it get it in the first place! Hoefully she isn't always like this and was just having a bad day. The staff everywhere else in the reserve were fantastic! :D

After tramping about on a chilly November afternoon we took the advice of the wonderful RSPB staff and went for coffee & cake.Whilst the coffee was warm & wet (did partner order the right one?) the cake was amazing! Orange & caramel? Wow! RSPB achieved a First in that we have never failed to see cake off before. It was with great reluctance that we pushed our plates aside. As always with RSPB the staff were marvelous, adding to the enjoyment of our visit to this lovely place.

Afterwards tea and cake. A clean and comfortable place to visit. Staff pleasant and attentive to detail. In the reserve it was litter free and very well maintained. The paths were wide and suitable for wheelchairs. Well signposted.

we visited whilst on holiday in the area and timed it so that w ewere able to start with breakfast - we thought that the only option was large soft baps filled with bacon, sausage, fried or scrambled eggs which suited us fine. However we then spotted several folk enjoying a plated full English - don't know how one orders this which isn't on the menu, and no idea of the price. After we'd spent almost three hours walking we decided to pop back for lunch, but the place was heaving so decided the wait for a table then food would take too long.

I often visit Leighton Moss when staying in the Lake District and it is a particularly good place to go if the weather is wet and/or windy. The café complements the reserve and has high standards; clean, good range of light meals and snacks, efficient and helpful staff and it gives good value for money. A good place to go after being out on the reserve !

The food was good and the prices were okay but it's a nightmare if you have prams/buggies or are disabled - there are lots of stairs and one rickety old chairlift thing. All the work that was carried out on that place and they couldn't plan for a lift?

I've been coming here for many years. If you can get past the violently green decor you'll find a good variety of food (I'm veggie with vegan son and omnivorous daughter) excellently cooked (pea and mint soup to die for) and brought with only a short wait to your table. Excellent cakes. Very reasonably priced.

We stopped in the upstairs cafe for tea and cake after a walk around the Leighton Moss reserve with very few sightings. The Cafe is perched upstairs behind the reception and is a little dull. The pot of tea just about managed two cups and the cakes were OK. I didn't mind paying the higher prices as I felt it was a contribution to the RSPB and we had paid a lower entrance fee that day but I would have been disappointed anywhere else. Tea with a view woud have been so much better.

A really good value cafe with good quality snacks. There was an emphasis on environmentally friendly produce which we appreciated. Down side was accessibility, with only a stair lift for mobility impaired users. Not clearly signed and not easy for those not used to using a stair lift.Staff were very helpful so don't be put off as they were doing as ch as they can to accommodate all visitors

Visited here after having a meander within the reserve - to be honest think next time I'll take a picnic to enjoy and save some money. The food was nice but would have liked a bit more variety to choose from - especially as a vegetarian off the menu and was surprised about the length of time it took to arrive at the table. If you're disabled or have a pram I'll be honest I didn't spot a lift some not that easy to get too as it's located upstairs.

You may not know a wood pigeon from a woodpecker, but you won't have any trouble identifying a delicious cake in this cafe, Good coffee, too, and a mini-bookshop with second hand books. Pick the right table and you can look down on one of the outside birdfeeders as the cafe is on the first floor.

Visited the cafe before a trip to the castle. Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Lovely atmosphere and cafe was warm and inviting on a cold January day. Coffees were made to perfection, as were the good and cakes. We will definately be back.

Food it very low quality for the price you pay. The coffee I had was pretty watery, I do like my coffee so it is very important for me to experience good quality coffee.
