Had lunch here with a very large family group 17 of us ,the meal had been pre-arranged .The staff were lovely very friendly and welcoming .We were in the Royalist restaurant ,people say the hotel is out dated ,but that is part of the history of the hotel and character , modern decor would not do the hotel justice , and shrewsbury town is a medieval town , the Prince Rupert was former home to Prince Rupert the grandson of King James 1 ,so why would anyone want to change such an Iconic hotel into a modern hotel . Our food and service was fantastic the serving staff were lovely very efficient and we didn't have to wait long between courses . My partner and I had Sweet corn Veloute for starters ,then Hake and then Chocolate Brownie with ice cream ,Every course was delicious served on hot plates . So if you like places with history and good food and service ,I can highly recommend the Prince Rupert every where was lovely and clean too .

We went as a party of four to celebrate my birthday, the decor was tired and part of the restaurant was set up for breakfast, most tables had a tablecloth apart from ours which apparently does not have a cloth however for us felt not finished. There were no locals in only guests. The food was ok but rather safe and not stunning, and only one menu not the one advertised on the web site. I asked if my steak could be wrapped up but was advised it breached the food code, on checking on the `Monday I was advised no one at the Foods Standards had ever heard of this, perhaps it is a restaurant thing. For me I would not sadly return

Staying in the hotel for the weekend and thought we would try this out. Menu was OK without wowing but able to find good choices, Lamb shank, Steak and Fish & Chips came all of which was fresh hot tasty and thoroughly enjoyed. The service was attentive and quick without being intrusive, the wine was delicious. A great choice and worth visiting if you in Shrewsbury.

After some friends recommended the food at this hotel, my partner and I decided to have an evening meal here. We first had some drinks in the bar and the Italian barman is so polite and attentive, he had us in stitches with some of his stories. The restaurant is quaint and tastefully decorated, music is a little dated but its fairly quiet so no big issue, now the food. The food is absolutely amazing, the desserts are to die for, could easily have eaten more than 1 of them however our whole experience was completely ruined by the young lady who served us who was without a doubt the rudest and most abrupt person I've ever had the displeasure to come into contact with. She was flustered and rushing around despite the restaurant being fairly empty and a simple question quickly turned into a small argument with her. I recommend teaching her some basic customer service skills before putting her into a restaurant environment.

Ate here during our stay at the Prince Rupert hotel. Staff are friendly and attentive and the food excellent. I enjoy a good steak but rarely (pun intended) is it as good or cooked as I would wish - this was the exception. Menu is varied and imaginative. Interesting medieval themed comfortable surroundings.

Having heard some very good reports we were somewhat disappointed with our meal. The toast that accompanied my selection of Pate was either stale or of poor quality bread as wast he luncheon roll. The main course of Turkey, whilst well presented lacked taste in that the roast potatoes were rock hard and had been around for some time. The Christmas pudding was presented with a best one spoonful of custard and additional being requested, did eventually arrive. In fairness some of the other dishes as selected were fully acceptable and tasteful.

My son and party had an acceptable lunch at this hotel enjoying the atmosphere on their way to the airport home. They have not lived live in UK for some time, do not know the reputation of these private car park firms and so used the hotel car park paying £3 into the machine. They have now been stung for a parking charge 0f £100 by ParkingEye as APNR is used and you are timed from the time of entry to the time of exit which meant that my son unwittingly overstayed by a few minutes as the walk to the parking machine was some distance. We contacted the hotel on his behalf who maintained that they had no influence on Parking Eye. This turns out to be false as they are the owners and the contract for parking is between the hotel and my son in law with Parking Eye acting as agent. We had hoped to appeal as my son and a passenger believe that there was no clear signs warning him but we need photos to prove this and we are too far away to go and visit. We asked the hotel if they could check this for us but they have not replied. We all feel very let down by a reputable hotel allowing its customers too be ripped off in this way.

A superb meal in beautiful surroundings. The Royalist Restaurant is a wonderful find as Shrewsbury seems to be dominated by pub style restaurants. In the Prince Rupert you can enjoy a beautiful meal served by staff who are friendly and seem eager to please and yet it's still possible to be able to hold a conversation. Our meals were amazing, our main courses were beautifully presented and tasted just as good but then the sweets were brought out. OMG, these looked as though they should be presented on Master Chef, they were so amazing. It seemed such a shame to spoil them by eating them so we had to really force ourselves and I can assure you they tasted as good as they looked. We will definitely choose this venue for future meetings.

We ate Christmas lunch with the family here as we were staying in the hotel. The dinning room was beautiful with panelled walls, huge fire place and traditional artefacts around the room (including suits of armour), and well-decorated to make it cost and 'christmassy'. We all enjoyed the huge amount of delicious food, which was elegantly presented and served by really friendly waiting staff. I particularly liked the fact that there were other large groups and families with older children, who were also sociable and friendly.

The restaurant is located in the Prince Rupert Hotel, a building dating back to medieval times. in the heart of old Shrewsbury. Unlike most hotel restaurants, this one is worth seeking out.My husband and I each enjoyed a three course meal. The menu was imaginative, the presentation impeccable, and the results superb. ("Surf and Turf', an appetizer, consists of perfectly grilled king scallops and a small square of crisp pork belly served on a 'smear' of whipped potato.) There are also some excellent wines available by the bottle.

The reviews were extremely good for the Royalist, so we went on Saturday night as an early Fathers Day treat. Some of the food we felt was a bit pricey, but it was good and the portions were decent however, two in our family had the 'sirloin of beef', and both were just very fatty pieces of sirloin with chips, a mushroom and a tomato - definately not as imaginative as the duck or the pork! - and to be honest you can get fillet steak for slightly less than what we paid for the 'sirloin of beef'.Although the place seemed a little tired and in need of updating, the staff were welcoming and very pleasant, and we weren't rushed out straight after desert! Even though we were the last to go.

Ate here as part of a group on a work trip, having chosen in advance from a limited-choice, lower price menu than those generally being reviewed on this site, just to be clear. The food was decent, with generous portions, and everything on each plate was well cooked and hot. Service was attentive, and the staff were very gracious and did not try to hurry us away when a small group of us clearly outstayed our welcome in the restaurant afterwards, and they were laying the tables for breakfast. The breakfast next morning was good, with hot choices cooked to order, and plenty of cereal and fruit to choose from. It would be interesting to go back and choose form the regular restaurant menu, which looked very appealing.

We have just been to the Royalist Restaurant at The Prince Rupert Hotel in Shrewsbury for my Mothering Sunday dinner. We started with pre-dinner drinks in the lounge and the Rose wine was probably one of the best house wines I have ever had. The restaurant was very interesting and atmospheric. Some of family felt it was a bit dark but I thought this added to the ambience. The table was well set with a central lantern candle. We had a wonderful 4 course dinner which included a Peach & Lemon Iced Shot. The food was delicious and the Chocolate Terrine dessert was luscious. We rounded off the meal with coffees and interesting homemade sweets. The raspberry jelly sweets were particularly popular with my family! We were made to feel very comfortable by the hotel staff who looked after us well, service being at just the right pace. The price was very reasonable for a hotel of this standard. Parking is the only issue here being in the centre of town, but we got round that by my husband dropping us all off, parking the car and then have to walk back to the hotel. Still we had a drink ready for him! All in all an excellent meal enjoyed by all and we would definitely return.

My husband has been raving about this restaurant for some time now, having been to several business lunches there, so we caught the train from Hereford last week to sample the Al la Carte in the evening, and boy, was it worth the journey! From a fabulous selection of amuse bouches (which included, amongst others, a very fine duck pate, a pea & mint veloute served in a sherry schooner and a miniature newspaper cone filled with fish and chips) while we studied the menu, through three outstanding courses, to homemade petite fours served with the excellent coffee. The menu is short, well thought out and reasonably priced with some truly original touches. My roast pork loin and pork belly with crackling came with mini toffee apples, something I had not encountered before, and which was both inspired and delicious. There is a chef here who really knows what he is doing and it surely can't be long before a Michelin star is knocking on the door. Friendly and efficient front of house, a delightful waiter and extraordinanry surroundings all added up to a truly exceptional dining experience. We really couldn't fault it.

We ate here on a Saturday night whilst staying at the Prince Rupert hotel. The menu was short but thoughtfully constructed and clearly focussed on delivering seasonal food of top notch quality. Every course was perfect, and beautifully but not fussily presented. My duck was memorable. The wine list was also well balanced and we enjoyed an excellent Sauvignon Blanc. The environment was comfortable and warm and with background music that was unintrusive to conversation.A mention, too, for the cooked breakfasts which were the best I have had in any hotel.Highly recommended for a quiet and relaxed meal with quality food and well judged service.

First I have to start with the amazing service. The staff were friendly, professional, and had a passion for the restaurant and hotel. My husband and I dined with another couple and we all started with the scallops. I highly recommend this starter. I ordered the steak main and although they had traditional steak sauces I asked if I could have some blue cheese with my steak. Not only did I get a great Shropshire blue cheese but the chef had also prepared an amazing blue cheese sauce. Since two other members at my table had ordered the steak main I did share my cheese but the sauce was just too good to share. Another member at my table ordered the Duck and it looked and tasted amazing. Three of us finished off our meals with dessert and were sad to see the meal over but we were thoroughly stuffed. What I loved is the atmosphere was more relaxed but the service and food just created an unforgettable experience. I can't wait to revisit this place and highly recommend it.

The Royalist Restaurant was the venue for our local business board dinner as we were entertaining a guest speaker and wanted to share the joys of the lovely town centre hotel. The food and service were worthy of a highly starred dining only establishment. Hotel dining is not normally rated for its exceptional qualities; The Prince Rupert Hotel outshines its culinary competitors in the area. The food was beautifully cooked & brilliantly served.; warm from the oven bread, skillfully cooked, divine supper dishes and a dessert platter to die for, Wholeheartedly recommend dining here, I only wished I had booked a room.

We had a birthday afternoon tea here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Being February and miserable weather, we had the place to ourselves but the staff had gone to a lot of effort - decorating the birthday girl's table with birthday confetti. Nice and cosy inside. The food was very good - nice selection of sandwiches - what I would call sensible fillings like cheese and chutney, ham and tomato, tuna mayo, and egg. Our only comment would be to include a few more of the tuna and egg ones as there were quite a few of the ham and tomato which for our group was the least popular flavour. A selection of four different cakes - carrot, victoria sponge, chocolate and a very good syrupy flapjack. Small pieces but we liked that as you could have a bit of everything without feeling like you were going to explode! Very fresh and tasty. Finally cream scones - and yay - proper clotted cream! My son has a lot of allergies so chose a baked potato off the main menu. The staff were very helpful at the booking stage sorting out his meal and he enjoyed it. Am sure it must be lovely in summer time with all the plants and being able to sit outside - will definitely come back again.
