Hotel faces the sea. Beware of rusty railings. Issues with the room re hot water, leaks and narrow staircases, etc. were fixed prominently.

We keep going back to The Royal York and Faulkner because we just love it. We book a room across the road from the sea (sleeping to the soothing hush of the waves) with a balcony and a view of the sunrise. Staff are unfailingly polite, cheerful and helpful. Afternoon tea is a bit over the top for us (we eat VERY sensibly, but when away - why not!) with scones and cream and jam. The food is very good, and the deal including dinner is very reasonably priced (as is the bar). Sidmouth is great. For anyone up for a hilly hike, the walks to Branscombe along the coast in one direction, or to Budleigh Salterton in the other are as lovely as they come. For the less energetic, Sidmouth itself is a total delight. We've just come home and we miss it. We'll be back, and THANK YOU to all staff at The Royal York and Faulkner. Robin & Jackie Pooley

Situated centrally on the Esplanade ideal for beach walks and shops. Hotel old-style but clean anthe fd food excellent. Some bathrooms badly designed, particularly for the lavatory. Thus trip a good room, excellent friendly service . Cannot fault the food or service. Will be back!!

A wonderful old hotel but with 20th century standards. Staff were so well trained and obliged my problem by serving me with tiny meal servings. 5 course meals for breakfast and evening meals.A nicely comfortable room overlooking the sea. Directly on the sea front with a very short walk to town.

Stayed at the hotel. Which is very nice. Excellent staff. Didn't have a Seaview but room was good and lovely bathroom and comfy beds. Food was good with wait on service. Unfortunately I and my companions will not return to Sidmouth. The town is a ghost town after 5.30 and the pubs close early. There is no entertainment in the hotel or in the town. Once you walk around the town in the day, that's it. Just charity and gift shops.

Favourite hotel stay ever! Value for money, food, hotel and staff all exceptional with discounted rate for the spa area. The staff and attention to detail make this hotel a cut above, from initial telephone and email contact and throughout the stay. Highly recommend

It's not very often that you spend time in what we can only describe as a traditional hotel. The rooms are exceptional and spotless we were lucky to have a Seaview, The Hotel staff were exceptional throughout, The evening meal and breakfast were all Silverservice, and nothing was any trouble for the staff. The choice and quality food truly amazing. After the evening meal we would retire to the many lounges for tea, coffee and mints. The location was excellent just cross over the road and you're on the promenade, 5 minutes to the bus stop, and just around the corner into town for shops, cafés, restaurants and cinema. It was one of those holidays that you wanted to go on. A really big thank you to everyone at the hotel that made it so memorable

Lovely hotel staff so friendly and helpful and the food is the best I have tasted in a hotel for a long time. It's a pity it's so far away.

Gingerbread house cafe is a lovely local coffee/breakfast/lunch spot on the high st, just up from the beach. I recently ordered a cream tea for two box to be delivered to my mother for her birthday as I live far away. She loved it, it was fresh and delicious and included sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and all the fixings, and she couldn’t have been happier to be surprised on her birthday with a friendly face and a special delivery. They are also very active in the community and offered free lunches for school kids during Covid. A great cafe!

Tasty breakfast in a lovely spot with views over the water. We visited end of November, but in the Summer with all doors open this would be even better. Recommended.
