Royal Tandoori in South Tyneside

The last time I was here it was the Royal and previously the Zolsa about 30 years ago We had a great meal I had King Prawn Vindaloo and Fish Barji to start. I couldn’t fault it.. 10/10

We loved the old Raj, so when they moved premises we had to give it a try. The staff, service and most of all the food are as good….. if not better than ever. Had a great night for my wife’s birthday. 🎂

Re-opened after moving from the old location. Same family service & excellent food. So nice to be back in our favorite Indian restaurant with the friends we have known for years. The Raj is every bit the same as the original Raj. The move from the old premises has taken over 2 years, & once the right premises were found The Raj was reborn. Really pleased to be back with the "Raj" family & absolutely thrilled to see the staff again. I wish every success to THE RAJ & I know it will be successful. To those who never experienced the original Raj, I suggest you try the new Raj. All the staff are super friendly & the food is superb. I’ve just ordered a takeaway for the first time from this curry house 18:20pm — 27/7/24 and it is absolutely disgusting 🤢 As soon as seen the plastic container with my madras inside I said to my partner this isn’t going to be nice and it’s probably been microwaved… WAS I RIGHT !!! The curry has absolutely no taste, freezing cold, chicken hard as rocks with no tenderness to it whatsoever, and I’ve poured glasses of water from the tap with more consistency… just a watery bland curry no doubt from the ice where it has been stored in the freezer from the night before ! The rice was freezing cold and bland also with literally no taste, the chips were hard as rocks also and very under cooked, and the mixed kebab was just the same as all of the above. Never again will I order from here. Try the Dilshad next door if you want a decent curry or the star of India, both 10x better than this establishment.

Used this restaurant for years, always great food and service. Got taken over a few months ago and food was terrible only lasted a couple of weeks then closed. Reopened this weekend and the food and service was superb. Good luck to the new owner

I have been visiting this restaurant for 25 years (since I was in a high chair) and have never had a bad meal and have always been welcomed with a smile by Rasid. After a recent visit I have discovered the restaurant is under new management and unfortunately it has took a severe dive compared to the high standards of food quality and service which Rasid has upheld for all these years. We were informed the previous chef who had 23 years experience has been replaced with a chef from London with over 40 years experience. Unfortunately it seems this new chef doesn’t have the flare or talent the previous chef and owner (Rasid) had in the kitchen. We also understand costs having to increase in line with inflation and cost of living crisis however the price has significantly increased but as mentioned above, the quality has not increased with it. It is sad to say but my self and my family will no longer be returning to this newly owned restaurant. I wish Rasid, his brother and family all the best in their retirement or new venture.

Been ordering curry from here for years and tonight was the last time prices are through the roof never paid so much for absolute swill everything went in the bin and was inedible or cold won't be returning

I have been coming here for nearly 40 years and last night, the food was absolutely vile, myself and my husband could not eat it, they said that they have a new chef, would definitely go elsewhere.

Stupidly expensive now used to be a good sensibly priced curry now gone berserk 4.95 for onion bhaji the world has gone mad get your prices down sharpish or fail

great staff very attentive almost to attentive but we did ask if we could have a few more minutes and they were more than happy. the dishes were very nice but did find the garlic chips a little on the tough side almost cardboard like but can't fault the rest a good drinks list and nice atmosphere made for a great evening meal with the wife

We had a family reunion and booked a table there. Everything is very well run, the waiters were excellent and very attentive, the decor fresh and the service timely. Everyone in our party ordered a variety of food and drink that was presented swiftly and politely. The food was DELICIOUS, and the beers cold. I couldn't ask for more. Thank you so much!

Ordered a Prawn Vindaloo and sat in. Food was amazing considering it was quite late when we arrived, everybody was happy and smiling and they checked up on our meals and asked if they fit our standard. I'd pay any money in the world for that vindaloo recipie. Amazing. 10/10

Had a chicken breast balti here two weeks ago, absolutely beautiful it was. Definitely one of the best baltis I've had and how I like it as well.

What a curry and a special offer on a Saturday night too! We all enjoyed our dishes and felt very full after. The restaurant is modern, clean and well laid out. Super service from the waiting staff.

We regularly visit the curry restaurants in Ocean Road South Shields on a regular basis but I can safely say this is the best of them all in our opinion . The chicken tandoori jalfrezi I had was one of the best I have ever tasted combined with fast friendly service from the staff. Thanks

This must be one of the best Indian restaurants in South Shields we have been going to it for years, we now live abroad but had a visit on our last trip home. The staff are so helpful and the service is quick food is to die for.

my goodness what has happened to this place. I went last week. It was freezing cold inside the restaurant. starters arrived, luke wark onion bhaji with a white gloopy sauce, limp side salad (if thats what it was) then a disastrous chicken jaipur curry. Hard onions, raw peppers and swimming in grease. The chicken was chopped up chicken tikka thrown in. Absolutely horrid. Id have been better off getting an Asda cook in sauce and making my own. Then the naan bread. Burnt on one side and should never have been served. To top it all a chef kept walking through the restaurant carring raw food. He looked absolutely filthy and the sight of him made me leave my meal, get the bill and just get out of there. To top it all I had an upset tummy for days after. I can't say it is definitely as a result of my experience here but I feel it is. used to love this restaurant but I wouldnt go back if you paid me.

Thought we would try this restaurant out after spending the night in South shields... They offered a 4 course menu for £9.95.. Great value for money... 1 of the best massala dishes I've had the rogan was spot on also... Would definitely recommend... And will definitely be going back... Staff couldn't of been more friendly...

New as soon as I receive my starter. 1 onion badgi red hot other warm. My madras was tasteless but hot I complained ask he asked how my meal was. I am a very honest person and told him just like my visit. I asked him if he had a microwave in kitchen he said no you could here it pinging. Very poor service never go again.

This place is a gem on ocean road. Go here all the time with friends and gf. After trying a ton of restaurants over the north east, this is our regular 'go to' for superb Indian food, quality and value! Its even turned my partner who didnt like indian food until I took her here. I said come on give it a try you'll like it. We now go about twice a month taking turns in driving! Top tip - The Tikka Massala is the best around

Thoroughly enjoy my regular visits here and appreciate their hospitality. Exceptional value at only £8.95 which continues to beat the rest on Ocean Road. Every request catered for (e.g. food intolerance) without fuss. Table service with a smile and packs up any leftovers (huge portions!) Highly recommend staff special curry or Ghengis (hot). Seems to be the unsung hero of South Shields. Good quality food without fanfare.

Fantastic relaxed atmosphere with friendly, but not obtrusive, service. Great quality food with a varied and interesting menu. The Genghis chicken and lankapiaza particular highlights. Phenomenal value specials.

I`m part of a group of friends that travel all across the north east eating curries. We have been doing this for 20 plus years. Our thursday ritual The 'd' club has been everywhere......yet we still keep coming back here like a spiritual home. Very traditional, with none of the modern food colourings or bright neon light. Ambient indian music in the background and an excellent welcome and service every time. Really well priced and food is fantastic every time. Also they do serve a nice pint of beer , This place believe me is the boyo!! Overall would highly recommend.

Had their Saturday special + red wine, popadum and chapati.I started with prawn cocktail: slightly overflavoured sauce and nothing striking about the ingredients.My main course was lamb (extra £2 - wish I'd gone for "meat", which is mutton or goat) Singapore. A bit rubbery for my liking and a very bland sauce.I had mushroom rice, which was flavourless.This was followed by big standard ice cream.The red Wine was a little "hairy" for me.Popadum and chapati as you'd expect.Service very prompt and polite.£20 including tip.I'm not crying about it, but I'll not come here again if I come to South Shields again.... Cheap, marginally substandard Northern Indian restaurant, on a street of excellent, cheap, Indian restaurants.

A real shame. The walls were half painted, I’m not sure if they’re decorating. When we were sat, we had no napkins on the table and the server seemed almost annoyed that I asked for some. The worst part was after we had eaten our starters and waited for our mains the waiter asked us to move to another table as someone had booked the one we were sat at! I’d understand if it was before we’d started eating but during the meal?! Just embarrassing. Food was nice though

Never again! would understand if it was busy but half full, 20 min wait for our drinks 1 HOUR for starters which weren't even hot, clearly been sitting there waiting as my partners was cold. service was just non existent, squeezed around a small table.. asked for our food bagged up to go.. and then trying to over charge us. absolutely disgraceful

The food is the best in south shields everything very tasty and plentyfull chips need to be cooked a little longer always hard and needs decorating and new stair carpet is a must otherwise food is lush

We have been coming here for years but came on Valentines night as something special !! We got the menu for Valentines night ... prices were put up higher 12.95 or 13.95 but not a single sign that it was Valentines Day displayed anywhere in the restaurant!! Nothing red but the seats and plastic multicoloured old flowers in a vase! We thought more effort could have been made instead of just putting the prices up. I saw plenty beautifully done restaurants to celebrate the day in style on Facebook to make it a special night!

Had a family meal here, all of us had the 3 courses each we all got different meals and everything was beautiful. I would say that the back part of the restaurant and upstairs to the toilets and the toilets could do with new deco/ carpets/ seating etc needs a bit updating.

Been coming here for years and it’s always been amazing. Cater to your needs nicely and if you want something changed with your order then they’ll do it. Visited tonight and it was no exception. I always leave loads of sauce and one of the guys was offering to make a fresh batch with less onions and sauce. I declined but it’s really nice they care about their customers

I’ve been eating here for many years now, even since moving to the South over ten years ago! It might be cheap with great special offers, but the quality of food is always top drawer regardless. Indian restaurants down south need to learn more from these guys. Usually I find it costs at least twice the price, and neither the food nor the hospitality reaches the standards on offre here. Without fail, I always look forward to eating here when visiting town.

Being regular Indian food lovers the curries here are well below par in both flavour and quality. Staff were very polite and attentive so no complaints other than there is better Indian food to be had in Ocean Road.

Poppadoms and pickle tray were excellent. Just as well because was my meal was appalling. Tough lamb in an inedible sauce. Didn’t even taste of curry. Meal taken off the bill but spoilt the night

We have been going to royal Balti for many years now, the service is excellent, I’m very fussy, and have never had a bad meal here. The prices are brilliant, the wait times are always quick. Would highly recommend anyone to try it out

It had the worst curry I've ever tried. Tikka Masala tasted like ketchup, and even though I didn't eat it, I was charged full price plus even the extra for chicken breast. Definitely not recommended.

If I could give this place more stars than 5' I would. The food is absolutely delicious, hence the fact that I've ordered from here 3 times in 5 days.. The staff are really professional and the restaurant has a nice ambience. I would definitely recommend. Having tried 2 other Indian restaurants along the same street, this is by far my favourite.

Cheerful, and very cheap..... £6.95 for three courses. We had four poppadoms and pickles, two three course meals and 5 pints of good quality Kingfisher beer to wash it down with for £40.....whats not to love???

The best ever for me for 20 years and counting

We visited for lunch on Bank holiday Monday and were thoroughly impressed with our meal.

Been visiting this restaurant for the past twenty five years and have never had a poor meal, in fact it is usually excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful,the food is good and very reasonably priced, and the special menu, which runs every day apart from Saturday is an absolute bargain. Best restaurant in Ocean Road, and highly recommended

First time here on Saturday on a recommendation. It felt familiar, I realised I'd bn here many years before. The staff gave us a warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We were shown to a little booth where you felt u had privacy to relax. Nice atmosphere. When the food arrived, it was plentiful and really good. The chicken was so tender and we enjoyed the starters too of onion bhagi and minced lamb kebab. The price for 3 courses and 2 drinks each was really reasonable, we were pleasantly surprised. We will definitely go back again.!!! 😊

My partner introduced me to The Royal in 2001, he's been going since 1995. Never a bad meal, staff are friendly and always good service and tonight was no different. Great value and food is always fresh and tasty. Pics are Mixed kebab & chicken tikka starter,Genghis chicken and Jaipur chicken, mushroom and veg pilau and Bombay potato's, coffee and icecream.

We’ve been coming here for years and love everything about the place. The owner has become a lovely friend who asks after our family who actually come too. The food is always excellent and the service great. Spotlessly clean. Great value for money .

The first time iv come here and the food is gorgeous furthermore the staff is friendly especially the younger one, he is hilarious and the madras was exactly how I wanted it. my husband especially enjoyed his rogonjosh alongside his onion pillaw and Bombay potatoes. Beautiful. Would recommend

There are lots of restaurants along Ocean Road but we find ourselves returning to the Royal Tandoori over and over again. The curry is delicious and there are great 3 course deals on, even on a Saturday night. You get big portions of sauce and pickles, which isn't always the case at other restaurants. We have been here many times and we have never had a bad meal. Finally, to top it off the service is fantastic. We will no doubt be returning here for many years to come.
