I stayed at The Royal Oak for one night whilst on a business trip. I also was fortunate enough to enjoy dinner and breakfast there. The staff were super helpful and friendly and both meals delicious. I have a couple of special dietary requirements and everyone was extremely accommodating. My room and bathroom were very clean and beautifully appointed. I would like to mention Emma on Reception who was particularly helpful during my stay I highly recommend The Royal Oak.

We visited on Sunday morning for breakfast and booked online. Internally the Royal oak pub is delightful, large fire, piano and beautifully decorated and has a pleasant vibe. We ordered two full English breakfasts (one pictured) which came with 2 small pieces of toast. The breakfast cost £15 per person and the pub had roughly 10 people in so it was not too busy. Our breakfasts were slightly on the disappointing side with my wife's poached egg being overcooked and my fried egg was too. The black pudding was excellent and so two was the bacon, maybe a little on the fatty side. Hash browns were decent and the sausages were very salty I found. I think we received one large mushroom between the two of us and in my honest opinion this was not a £15 breakfast. The pub is excellent and the young lady serving was also working the bar and payment too... And brought out our breakfasts, she seemed to be doing everything. We would return but for drinks only. The pub was quite busy but Emma and her team produced a fantastic performance and outstanding food. We arrived at 6.30, moved to a dog friendly table and then two extra friends arrived unexpectedly but we were able to move again to a table for six. Through all of this, the team just kept producing great food and service. We have always enjoyed our visits here and this was another great experience Thanks Emma.

This is a great place for travellers, lovely view, comfortable, nice staff but....don't go there if you are hungry. The food was tasty but the portions were tiny so virtually no value for money. You shouldn't walk out still hungry ....but I certainly did.

Originally coming into this restaurant I had high hopes, I assumed it’d be a run-in-the-mill pub grub, It was my grandma’s birthday and we normally can afford a nice meal, on entering we were met with friendly staff, we ordered drinks and sat down. Everything about this restaurant seemed fine at first glance however once our menus arrived I found that there was practically nothing catered for vegetarians such as myself, the only item on the menu was a pea and asparagus risotto, and admittedly while it did sound appealing risotto is simply not my preferred taste, in a scenario like this I’d normally order a plate of chips however there was no sides menu either! Only item on the menu I found catered to vegetarians was the soup of the day, I had a bash at this and didn’t enjoy it but I still felt hungry afterwards my family kept enjoying their meals as they would however for vegetarians there was nothing going! The service was good, the portions were perfect but the lack of vegetarian and vegan options was disappointing to say the least, I ended up having a desert to fill me up as I was still hungry, it feels such a shame to have to leave a review like this however I believe it’s exaggerating the title of ‘vegan friendly’ too far, as there wasn’t a single vegan starter either!

Very disappointing experience, went for Sunday lunch, food was a mixed bag (terribly overpriced for what is served), but worst was the service - staff completely indifferent throughout and no response to very polite and justified feedback provided on a couple of food items. Not a single smile during our almost 3h there. I have provided detailed feedback by email but nobody has bothered to reply, hence review here. Wouldn’t recommend taking a child, and maybe stay clear if you’re not local, maybe that is where we went wrong!

We had a lovely family lunch here on 20th December. Being almost halfway between Ashbourne and Norwich, it suited our needs perfectly. The food was very good, and there was a reasonable choice for me as I am gluten intolerant. The staff were friendly and very helpful, and all in all, it was a very enjoyable meal. Unfortunately, on the way home, I realised I had left my hat, which I am particularly fond of. Fearing I might never see it again, I emailed Debbie, the Restaurant Manager, and she was on it like a shot. Not only did she respond almost immediately to me, but I had my hat back within a week. This would have been really good service at the best of times, but when you consider we have had a weekend, followed by Christmas and Boxing Day, it was fabulous. We certainly look forward to our next meet-up at the Royal Oak at some point in 2024, and hopefully, I can then thank Debbie in person.

Visited last night for my husband's birthday. After checking the menus on line, we were satisfied with the variety on the menu and booked. On arrival, however we were disappointed to find a much smaller menu, with limited options. We both opted for the Parsnip soup, which arrived with lovely bread and almost frozen butter, which we managed to melt with the aid of the warm soup spoons. The meat pie we were told was finished, although it as only 7.15! and the only fish available was battered. Because of dietary problems. I asked if the fish could be cooked without the batter, but was told that wasn't possible. So because I cannot eat red meat, the only option was for me to have the fish and chips and eat the fish minus the batter. The chips were huge potato wedges, very dry and unappetising. The mashed peas, were luke warm and splodged underneath the small piece of haddock, covered in an enormous amount of batter to disguise the small quantity of fish. £17.95 is rather expensive for a small piece of fish, inedible chips and unappetising luke warm peas! My husband who had been looking forward to the pie, opted for the Camenburger and chips, which again, the cooked potato wedges were dry and unappetising. Both of us left at least half our meals and made our comments known to the staff. This will be our last visit to this establishment and will not be recommending to our friends. Rachel Bartlett-Ward

We have been a few times since Karen took over the lease and the young chef is doing a fantastic job in maintaining the original excellent menu. We inadvertently turned up on this months quiz night which was well attended and Karen had to recruit an extra chef for the evening so there was a slight delay on our food but we were fully entertained by astonishingly difficult array of quiz questions!! Food was outstanding as ever and we shared mackerel pate, chicken &ham pie and mille feuille which I would heartily recommend Lovely venue, parking etc. see you again

I visited last week on my journey north. The Royal Oak is well positioned and an attractive, well maintained building. Excellent car parking facilities too. I decided to have a light lunch of steak & onion sandwich which was superb. Tasty and cooked to perfection. Presentation was good too. The lady behind the bar, Roz, was welcoming and chatty. Exactly what any customer would be looking for in a country pub. Ambience was very relaxing and the music was at the right level - audible without being overpowering. I could quite happily have stayed much longer. When chatting with Roz I discovered The Royal Oak also offers accommodation, so maybe next time I will stay longer. I only wish I lived closer and had this place as my local. Excellent in every way. Thank you to Roz for making my all too brief visit so memorable.

We went to the Royal Oak for my husband's birthday (Sunday lunch). This is the second time we have been in a month and on both occasions the food has been excellent. On the first occasion the service was outstanding, but on this occasion I understand there was a fair bit of staff sickness and trainees, and the service was not quite as good. Hence 4 stars. The chef made a cake to order as a surprise, and it was absolutely fantastic. But the service was a bit slow and one of the members of staff spoilt the surprise of the cake by loudly announcing at the table, would we like the cake now?! We would attend again though.

We stayed here one night on our way back home from a holiday in Norfolk. Our twin room was beautifully decorated, with one of the nicest beds I have ever slept on. The mattress and pillows were so comfortable and I have already said in a Google review that I wanted to bring the mattress home with me. We had a really lovely fish and chip dinner in the evening and a lovely breakfast the next day. The fruit and pastry platter was a really nice touch. Staff were helpful and friendly and Ronan dealt with an issue with our kettle in a very professional and speedy way. Didn't see Belle sadly but we hope to stay here again, when in the area.

Our rooms were lovely and the beds so comfortable, we all had an excellent night’s sleep. The bar staff are so friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble, we felt very looked after. The chef is a little gem and the menu is fabulous. We saw the chef and called him over to us to compliment him on his cuisine. There were four of us adults and an 18 month old. We decided to share two starters between us, whipped goat’s cheese with braised asparagus, courgettes and crackers, and chicken terrine with carrot sauce and crackers. These starters would not have been out of place on MasterChef or in a Michelin starred restaurant. They were beautifully presented and the taste of what we were eating set our tastebuds singing. The chicken terrine was the best I have ever tasted, topped with finely sliced carrot and the carrot sauce was phenomenal. The crackers were handmade, thin, crispy, and the perfect accompaniment to both dishes. Our mains were a further gastronomic delight. Two of us had medium rare steak, with handmade onion rings, a huge field mushroom on top of half a hot beef tomato and the best handmade potato steak chips I have ever tasted. One of us had a beef burger which was thick and juicy, again, beautifully presented. The fourth adult had shoulder of lamb which was shredded on a bed of pea purée and broad beans, with finely cut crispy potato on top. The 18 month old was given sausage chips and beans, even though it was not on the menu. All the mains were exquisite, and we enjoyed them thoroughly. One of us had a vanilla parfait, which I tasted and it was the most luscious and creamy spoonful. The rest of us shared a raspberry millfeuillette, with raspberry coulis, and ice cream, it was heavenly, and the raspberries sang themselves out of the dish. In short, one of the best dining experiences I have had anywhere. Breakfast was a further delight. A lovely menu. My daughter had smoked salmon with a poached egg which was divine, and the salmon was generous. The rest of us had single English breakfasts which were cooked to perfection. Before that all arrived we were given a platter of fresh fruit and pastries gratis, which included strawberries, melon, nectarine, grapes, pain au chocolat, croissant and raisin pastry. If you want top notch dining and a great night’s sleep in this part of the world, then I would recommend The Royal Oak at Duddington unreservedly. Go on, treat yourself, you won’t regret it x

We needed somewhere to stay at a halfway point between home and our final destination and chose The Royal Oak. It’s a delightful country pub with rooms about 10 minutes drive from Stamford, located adjacent to the A43, so we did hear road noise when the window was open. Luckily it wasn’t a warm night so we closed the window and the road noise was shut out. Really nice room with a super king size bed, which was a little soft for our preference, however we did both sleep well. The shower (over the bath) was ok, not particularly powerful but instant hot water. We had to request tea bags and milk as there wasn’t any in our room but our request was met very promptly. The staff are incredibly friendly and polite and dinner was delicious, freshly cooked and delivered with just a small wait. Breakfast was also excellent, again delivered in good time by a very efficient and welcoming young lady. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend and I’m sure we will be back in the future. The cost was excellent value, which is always a positive.

Met my sister for lunch, can recommend the halloumi and red pepper sandwich, warm in whole grain bread. It was served with fries and green salad. Coffee was good too.

Very nice. The bar staff were very polite and asked for track/trace. The steak sandwich I ordered was fresh and top quality. Sat outside in the sunshine and the young lady who served was very courteous. All good. Nice place.

After not being out since the start of this crazy time, we met up with friends who were visiting the area in their motor home. From entering the Royal Oak, we felt very safe with the environment and how the staff conducted themselves, nothing was too much trouble. The 3 course lunch was so nicely presented, well cooked, hot, and plenty of it. The husband always has well cooked beef but did have some medium rare as well and said it was the nicest beef he had eaten for a very long time. The staff were very attentive and nothing was a problem. We weren't rushed and able to take our time and enjoy our catch up time. We finished off with coffee outside, taking in the late afternoon sunshine. We will definitely be returning and hopefully enjoy another superb meal.

Sadly this restaurant is not as good as it was. The service is a bit desultory and unfortunately a bit take it or leave it and there was no uniform. The Grasmere steak and ale pie had a mere three pieces of meat, gravy and a mass of pastry. The sizzling curry was nothing special having large chunks of chicken (why were they not cut smaller), a thick sauce and our clothes reeked of it next day.

We had a friendly greeting when we arrived and enjoyed a well kept pint of Grainstore Rutland beer whilst we made our selection from the tasty menu of home cooked fare. The roast beef was pink and delicious, the dessert were very tasty. The service was very good, attentive but not intrusive. A good selection of wines on offer. A thoroughly enjoyable meal

My husband and myself have eaten here several times before (as have myself and a friend at lunch time), so I was confident on taking friends here for an early dinner en-route to a concert in Stamford last Saturday evening. Table booked for 4.45 and we sat for a full half hour before anyone came to take our order. Oh dear, how disappointed were we ....... 2 of our party had the chicken tikka which they said was really tasty and smelled amazing, but unfortunately myself and our other guest chose the mushroom rissotto from the specials board, this being one of my favourite meals, and it was really awful - very bland, tasting more like a bowl of plain boiled rice with a few mushrooms mixed in - nothing like a rissotto! No-one approached us while we were eating to ask how it was, and the first time the waiter approached us ws to collect the plates, asking how everything was. My friend told him how disappointed we were, how bland the rissotto was, the responce being a glib 'sorry about that' as he took away our not even half eaten meals. He returned with a dessert menu and my husband declined, telling him that we didn't feel like paying them any more money as we felt we had wasted our money on the first course - again, a glib 'sorry about that'. When he brought the bill he did say that he hadn't charged us for the rissottos which was fair enough, but we left hungry and would have ordered desserts if he had said before that he wouldn't be charging us for our uneaten main! We didn't have time to eat elsewhere before the concert but did have to go and get a takeaway afterwards. I would be very apprehensive about returning after this experience which is a shame as all other meals here have been lovely. but we have lost confidence now.

A fourth visit here although we haven’t been for some time. Excellent lunch of fish and chips which we thoroughly enjoyed. It’s a great location close to a busy crossroads and atmospheric inside with lots of curios. Above all else it comes with good and friendly service. Four visits, all good so there will be a fifth at some point!

I'd love to be able to give a full review but the truth is, despite booking 3 months in advance and receiving confirmation emails of the booking, we turned up for our Boxing Day lunch to be told that no table had been reserved for us.To add some meat to the bones, or family have a tradition of going out for lunch every boxing day... Always being hosted by the patriarch of the family... My father in law. Tragically, we lost him recently and this year would have been a meal in his memory. Upon arrival, we were told that there was no record of our booking. When we produced email confirmation of our booking we were told there was nothing they could do but apologise. Nothing? How about bring out another table and honour your commitment? How about offer us another booking? How about some kind of explanation as to why you confirm a booking and then give our table away?My wife was in tears as we left. Absolute disgrace.

Used to be the best place to go, but now it’s terrible! The food is not the same standard, and on the last three occasions we have have been greeted by someone with no personal skills. Such a shame watching this place gradually die.

We booked here at the last minute and were not disappointed. The staff did everything they could to make our visit great. Our party had two children we were worried about what they would eat on a Sunday. No problem, tell us what they would like and it’ll be cooked to order. Dessert was just the same. I’ve not been to many places with that customer first attitude! The roast dinners were very tasty and massive. This place is well worth a visit and I’m sure we’ll venture to those parts again.

Staff were friendly enough, service was prompt, however I got a paltry amount of chips to compliment my "chicken" burger....no salad or owt. The meat was actually beef, which wouldn't have been an issue in itself, but the accompanying roll and 'toppings' were for a chicken burger, so I had mayo & lettuce on my beefburger. Not great, not even sure how that went so wrong and wasn't picked up by anyone. Photo shows the combination received, and the largely empty plate, can only imagine the focus was on the brioche branding.

Seeing as my review was removed I will try again! Stay away. I went to the so called “quiz night” and it was awful. You would have found a better atmosphere in a morgue. Hardly any there, no music, vile smell and it was dirty. I use to frequent the pub before lockdown and it was fantastic. It has apparently changed hands since and not for the better. I will definitely not be going back. The smell and filth were enough to put me off my beer let alone dreary feel to the place. Very sad to say that I will not be recommending a once lovely pub

We were staying down the road at the Queens head, walked down the village and popped in here for a drink, what a great friendly little pub, Brian the landlord and his mum Linda, made us very welcome, we felt like part of the local community, we enjoyed so much we went back several times during our 2 night stay, and much preferred it to the Queens head. Thank you Brian and Linda for you hospitality. Julie G Shepperton.
