Enjoyed a three night stay in one of the Old Colliery Stables, which is part of the Royal Oak pub next door. Accommodation was basic but clean and comfortable and offered very good value for money. Microwave, fridge and crockery provided if you want self catering but we took advantage of the very tasty food next door in the Royal Oak which was great value including the full English breakfast we booked in advance for just £5pp per day. Service very good, staff were very friendly and helpful.

Not really very good as it was cold and the ‘coal house’ style annex accommodation was rather cold (although the proprietor brought in an electric fire). Could be because we’ve rather old- 78 and 87 at the time) Meals in the pub good as was the open fire and the atmosphere was very welcoming.

A great place to stay. Landlady and Landlord were welcoming and fun . Friendly atmosphere and good food at a sensible price. The nature reserve opposite was an unexpected bonus with a pleasant woodland walk. I am assured there will be Campari next time🤣

We've just returned from a lovely two night stay. We were given a warm welcome by Sonia on arrival. Our room was very cosy with a king size bed, which was extremely comfortable, and a lovely modern ensuite shower room. The view from the window was lovely. We found the room got a little hot but there was a fan provided which we made use of. We ate in the restaurant twice and would highly recommend the fish and chips, best we've had in a while. We were travelling with our dog, who was made very welcome in all areas despite being a bit grumpy! The locals were very friendly and the pub was in a good location for exploring County Durham's beautiful coast and countryside. Would definitely go back, thank you!

We had a three night stay with our dog in December 2023. The restaurant and bar is very welcoming with both good quality and good value food with a warming log fire. The breakfasts could be improved with better heating, better coffee, larger cooked breakfast portions and low fat speeds as well as butter. The accommodation in The Stables is rather small but would be well set-up for self catering for hardy well covered guests , but many a Youth Hostel is warmer and has better showers , more insulation and warmer bedding. The hosts did provide a supplementary electric fire and explained that the heating system is stressed in Winter. We think that cyclists and walkers would find this good in season; Septuagenarians and Octogenarians in Winter need to come with extra insulation!.

We decided to have a b and b in the rural setting of western Durham. The Royal Oak is an old, traditional pub and grub establishment, well worth a stay for anyone liking the rural / walking environs. The food was very tasty and of generous portions, and some good owld ales ensured a nice stay. On this particular occasion, there was a turn on singing. The hosts, Sonia and Ian would compliment any establishment and have been at the Royal Oak for many years. The breakfast sent us away well satisfied. Good stay, enjoyed.

Really friendly pub, staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms were warm clean and comfortable, and for the price we paid we were more than happy, breakfast was very good, evening meals were really nice and good value, despite the flooding and terrible rain, we had little trouble getting to Beamish museum or Durham, would definitely stay again.

We were staying nearby for the night so called in on a Saturday night for food on the off chance. What a find! This is such a friendly & welcoming pub, if we didn’t live so far away I’d say we’d definitely be back. Food was excellent….proper hearty pub grub, nothing fancy but tasty & fantastic value. Drinks were equally good value & we were impressed by the choice of wines they had too. 100% give this place a go if you’re nearby.

We stayed in the converted stable block, three small but well-equipped rooms next to the pub. Hospitality from Sonia and her husband was great, and the breakfast was not only good, but excellent value. The room was cosy and comfortable, with fridge, microwave and tea/coffee and the other bits you'd expect. The shower was very good, and we had a couple of good nights at The Royal Oak. Very well placed for access to the Roman Wall, Durham City, and Art galleries in Bishop Auckland. We go 'Up North' a couple times each year, and The Royal Oak will be out first option from now.

So much modern history and landscape to explore Loved the food ! Good no frills home cooking and breakfast was spot on. Nice service at the bar and the owners are friendly and very knowledgeable.
