Fish & Chips at 149 in County Durham

Stopped last evening,lovely staff and the Cod was the best i hav had in a long time.Just fell apart eating,think James was the fryer.Thank you,great value.Cheers

We have just enjoyed fish and chips in the cafe at 149 Barnard Castle. The food was excellent and the staff very friendly and pleasant, despite being short staffed today. We have been here on several occasions and each time the food and staff have been outstanding. We would thoroughly recommend a visit.

Putting this review on because of the team member who served me on Saturday ,he was young smallish (sorry) he was so helpful and friendly nothing was a bother ,he actually seemed to enjoy his job so big shout to you ..Fish and chips which we then took to The Cricketers Arms pub with my pickled onions were superb ,see you next time we are visiting .

We have always raved about and recommend the 149 fish and chip shop in Barnard Castle but when we visited it on the 30th of March we ordered our usual fish bites (strips) and chips to share but when we got back home and opened them we couldn't believe what we seen the fish bites were tiny at first we thought they were gust clumps of batter but when we opened them they were the smallest bits of fish we'd ever seen I just wished I'd took photos So I'm afraid that is the last time we will going there "shame"

Best chippy in the north of England, they use homemade batter and fry in traditional beef dripping. Food is always cooked well and service is swift and efficient. They also have gluten free options available for most of their products and table service in the restaurant if you wish to eat in. Deffo a must try!

Food is good with wide choice, covering special diets, fish was fresh as fresh nice staff

Had the seniors special with cod, it was all delicious and washed down with nice pot of tea. Our server was brilliant and very attentive. My only criticism is that you can't leave a tip if paying by card. Surely this can be sorted for the excellent staffs benefit.

Had a fish and chips here last night takeaway and have to say how disappointing and expensive they were. Wouldnt recommend them at all. The fish was thin and over cooked. We were travelling through not from the area. You will find much better fish and chips elsewhere. Nice staff, however very polite and helpful

Customer service terrific as always, always been catered to by the staffs and making sure we were looked after well. The shop is always busy, personally I think the shop will thrive if they have more staffs - as far I seen and observed they are always working extremely hard and dedicated to customers and making sure everyone is tended to as efficiently as possible. Food is amazing as always. Highly recommended!

149 in Barnard Castle, really is a fantastic traditional fish and chip shop - restaurant with very attentive staff, polite friendly and welcoming with your food prepared and served freshly with a smile. It doesn't matter what you order, l can say with hand on heart, you will not regret your choice, all cooked to perfection 👌

The restaurant was cold. The haddock had a dry texture and the batter was very crispy but little taste, Seemed overcooked. Very disappointing as I based visit on reading previous reviews

Great fish and chip shop, with plenty of options. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of gluten-free/coeliac options, which was a real treat. Fish was really tasty, chips were really well cooked and all the staff were really friendly and helpful, especially with asking about how they cook the gluten free.

Decent fish and chips here, gluten free options available for the Mrs and, more importantly, staff well trained and aware of cross contamination risks. Would eat there again.

I had kids fish strips chips and I got mushy peas with them , they was delicious as always when I go there.

Great wee chippy. Very efficient friendly staff and excellent portion of fish and chips. Both were cooked to perfection and the mushy peas and curry sauce were so tasty. Very clean and hygienic kitchen. Would definitely visit this place again. 10 out of 10 .

Just really good fish and chips served with a smile!

I treated my Daughter to lunch here last Monday and it was wonderful. The waitress was friendly, polite and efficient and the food was delicious. It was the freshest fish I've ever had and the batter was to die for, and also a really good cup of tea. There's no wonder the queue is nearly always out the door when i drive past lol, will definitely call here again.

Best gluten free fish and chips

Been a few times to this fish & chip shop in Barney. The food is always impeccable and cooked the traditional way in beef dripping instead of toxic seed oils. Always perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. They also do their own tartar sauce which is a rarity these days. It's superb like the rest of it. Only one thing I'd ask for is to have the option of a small sausage instead of a jumbo sausage option only. Not a deal breaker because we come for the amazing fish & chips. My daughter does like sausage you see.

Can't fault it, a tad expensive but massive portions.

Lovely place, great food, great staff, attractive prices. I'd love to see one of these open up in my home town Northallerton. We've lost 2 of our chip shops. The garthway cafe has closed in Northallerton too. We are looking for places like this.

Seen the Fish & Chips 149 offered Gluten Free - meal plan changed as it was treat to see GF available for the children particularly in a fish and chip shop. So glad we did - great GF options for all. Great service and staff clued up on GF. Highly recommend

Called here today for some food on the way to visit family. Saw the reviews and was looking forward to trying but ended up very disappointed. Chips were incredibly stale and dry, almost chewy. Also all quite brown. Sausage had quite a lot of fat in it too. Both me and my partner ended up tossing them. Left what I can only describe as a weird covering of some kind of heavy grease/lard all over our lips and in our mouths. Wouldn’t recommend unfortunately ☹️

Super friendly service and ideal for gluten-free diners. I can’t remember the last time I had ‘proper’ battered fish and chips since being told gluten was off the menu, so this was a real treat. A separate fryer ensures peace of mind and the staff were very helpful and reassuring. GF vinegar too. Worth a visit if you’re passing through.

We came here before a show at the Witham and made a good choice in doing so. Although the dining area was quite open to the cold wind that came through the door the staff were warm and helpful. Our cod and chips were excellent especially the light crispy batter that covered the fish. The curry sauce was a good addition too. No 149 offers very reasonable value and must be one of the best places for fish and chips in the area.

Smaller than the catterick branch, but food just as good. Nice place to go for the day and have a look around. Always filling food

149 at Barnard Castle is a little gem and a warm, welcoming haven on a wintery night. No soggy batter or undercooked chips here - just lots of delicious food. It is a fair way for us to travel but we have never been disappointed.

The best chips I have ever had!! Wow. What a great find. Crispy fluffy chips Flaky flavorsome fish Moorish mushy peas. Served by wonderful young lady who provided gold standard service. Did I mention .... The best chips I have ever had!!

We were on the way to an Award winning fish and chip shop...but it was closed , thank goodness because we had the best fish and chips EVER at 149. Absolutely delicious, the cod was superb, the batter crispy and light ,the chips morish and the peas delectable, the only down side is we live 3 hrs away.

Called in here for my tea and got a table no problem. The eating area/restaurant was clean and tidy and well lit. The service was excellent with the waitress suggesting various dishes on offer . My pot of tea was also accompanied with a pot of hot water so I actually received about 4 cups of tea. I had fish and chips with mushy peas and their curry sauce and I enjoyed everything including the brown bread included in my choice, white or brown bread was offered. All in all a very nice experience and will be there again shortly. Highly recommend.
