Good food, actually really good food. Massive portions. Friendly staff and locals. Stayed a couple of hundred yards away and thought we'd go to the nearest pub on our first night and it turned out it was a great choice. Spent the next day at York Christmas market which was spectacularly too peopley with little to no chance of getting any food, so we headed back to Pateley Bridge and the Royal Oak. It didn't disappoint the second time around, if anything it was even better.

Lovely roast late on a Sunday afternoon. All other pub/restaurants in the area were no longer offering roasts which is common at 4pm on a Sunday but were delighted to find that the Royal Oak were still serving. Lovely meal with a fantastic view!

Called at this pub yesterday afternoon - there were 40/45 of us arriving at staggered times between 3.30pm and 5pm for a drink and some of us, something to eat following long organised club walks in the area. Three of us arrived at 3.45 and noticed that the majority of tables had reserved signs. For anyone who has not been to this pub - it can’t be called large so when our walkers began to filter in all of these tables were out of bounds. Apparently they were booked for a party arriving at 6pm (we were leaving Pateley Bridge at 6pm). On our arrival at 3.45 we noticed that condiments were quickly snatched from the tables and our walkers were told they could not order food unless they were booked in. Members were told quite firmly that they had to vacate the tables by 6pm. In these days where pubs are going out of business at an alarming rate, the missed opportunities to make a fair amount of money in two hours was disappointing for our members and not a good advert for Pateley Bridge. Would I visit this pub again - certainly not. Would I recommend this pub to anyone - certainly not. We were made to feel very unwelcome.

Fantastic friendly welcome from every member of staff. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Great drinks...Theakstons bitter always a winner. Food, between us we had the burger, the pork steaks and the steak pie. All were absolutely BANGIN'. The accompanying veggies included Cauliflower which was not (thankfully) overcooked into baby food mush as so often happens. Damn good. Also no filling a plate with wasteful "garnishes" no one actually wants to eat, it is all the good stuff, precisely as the menu says. No stupidly loud music prevented good conversation - it was in the background where it should be. You won't leave hungry or disappointed or mis-sold. If you're in that glorious part of the country definitely visit the Royal Oak in Pateley Bridge. You can park opposite in the vets carpark of an evening as the vets is closed. Cracking place, you won't regret a visit if you're looking for welcoming, importantly happy, friendly staff, great food and great beer!!!

We had a choice of places to eat in Pateley Bridge. We picked the Royal Oak, because of the good reviews. My wife had the Royal Oak burger, she said it was good. I had Breast of Chicken with mushroom sauce, the chicken breast was dry well done & hard on the edges. The mushroom sauce was very thick not nice., veg & new potatoes good. I told the waiter and he asked if I wanted anything else. I asked for the steak & steak & ale pie. The meat was over done the pastry was burnt, the gravy was very salty.

Ate here twice when staying locally. Great value home cooked food & reasonably priced wine & good service. The portions were large & tasty. Two of our party had steak & were the only ones disappointed with their meal. Waitress passed on the comments to the chef who came to our table. When assured that it was the quality of the meat rather than his cooking he promised to contact the supplier. The staff really seemed to care

We recently had a weekend in pateley bridge we pre booked Friday night at the Oak and had a fantastic meal both having sirloin steak with trimmings, the food and pub was that good we went for a drink on Saturday afternoon and booked a table again for the evening, homemade steak pie was fantastic with chips and fresh veg,(nothing frozen here) my wife had steak again rump this time but couldn’t finish her meal due to massive homemade onion rings, and sides of chips, coleslaw and fresh salad, the pub is so friendly with lovely attentive staff and a nice outdoor seating area overlooking the lovely scenery, can’t wait to return.

We visited the Royal Oak while staying at Pateley Bridge and ended up here most nights! Good choice of ale and excellent choice of food, it may not be a gastro pub but it was far superior to an alleged gastro pub we tried in the area. Basically a good choice to suit everyone and VERY generous portions (be warned). Nice safe outdoor seating, with a covered area. Lovely friendly staff, very reasonable prices and dog friendly. This will be our first port of call if we visit the area again.

Our first choice of pub was not serving food so we came here instead and we are so gad we did, Dogs were welcome and the staff are very friendly, I ordered steak and ale pie and 1 must say its the best ive ever had, there was loads of veg with it and tons of chips, the gravy was MmmmMmmm it was delicious, my daughter wanted the Thai curry that was advertised with prawns, but asked if she could have veg instead of prawns, they said of course they can do that and she said it was amazing, very tasty. There was plenty to choose from the menu and they also had a decent selection on the specials menu board. A very pleasant experience and next time were in Patelely Bridge we will definitely be back. 10/10

We came across this pub online, and came all the way from Queensbury to eat at this pub, when we arrived all the barmaid said is that they are serving food no ‘had a good Christmas?’ No ‘Happy new year’ nothing. moving on, we ordered our drinks at the bar- disappointed in the hospitality, we sat down but struggled to get settled as there was a lack of warmth, huddled in our winter coats we trembled to the bar, when WE had to collect them we saw there there was also lack of fizz in the coke, but was unconvincingly told and snapped at that “it’s coke!” However, AFTER we collected our drinks she told us what wasn’t on the menu and we were surprised to learn that half the menu was missing as she practically said everything on there. Displeased once again... we sat down and planned our escape as there was no chance we would eat our lunch in these circumstances, we are a family of six and don’t expect a five star meal and hospitality but don’t expect 1 star either, extremely dissatisfied to say the least, improvement and training is a must.

We went back in the evening, strange atmosphere in pub - husband followed 2 people who went to the bar too. Barmaid served them, then totally ignored my husband when two (obviously) locals walked in. The barmaid never made eye contact - what a rude person! So we left and took our business to the Crown. The landlord was very obliging, they fitted us in for a meal although extremely busy, and we visited several times. We took a day trip out to Pateley Bridge and had this pub recommend to us while we were there. It's a cosy little pub in a great spot, and we found all the locals and visitors really friendly.

Stopped by for a dinner at this pub and good choice it was. Food was good and well priced. Please note that food portions are huge so bear that in mind before ordering a starter.

I often use the wording 'Yorkshire sized' for generous portions. Well the Royal Oak exceeds anything I've had before, the plates are big and consequently so is the quantity of food thereon. You'll have to consider this when thinking about a starter or dessert. The quality is very good indeed, staff welcoming and friendly. What you'd expect pub food to be with a reasonable choice and a specials board too. Bearing in mind the size of te portions, exceptional value. Three real ales available on the day of our visit, two from major breweries, and very well kept.

3 adults & 4 teenagers ate delicious food. Huge quantities. Quotes from various in the group "best lasagne ever", "probably one of the best burgers I've ever eaten", "really good fish & chips with really crispy batter", "gorgeous sausages" & "lovely ranchers chicken". Very satisfied customers. Highly recommended for great pub grub.

The wife and I went here on a Saturday around 3 pm. Dogs welcome everywhere (unlike the pub on the Main Street) and a friendly welcome.

25 people of retirement age were served with a splendid 3 course lunch from a pre-selected menu. The food was delicious and served by the friendly staff. Elaine & Brian were most helpful with the menu choices and with the organisation of the dining room to seat us all comfortably. Thank you to you all

Absolutely fabulous fish and chips, nothing better than in good weather to sit at the bench and tables outside in the square and watch the world go by

Superb large hotel with a wonderful ambience. Having hotel hopped across the UK for 21 days, the old Swan is the winner. Huge rooms, reception areas, grand dining room and loads of comfortable places to relax. Of particular note, is the lady in the coffee lounge/bar area. Her level of service, kindness, professionalism is exquisite. Perfect, friendly customer service. She really goes out of her way to make you feel welcomed.. I'm afraid I don't know her name, and did not wish to embarrass her by asking however again today 15th November she has surpassed herself with her courteous service.to myself and my partner whom is wheelchair bound.. She is an absolute credit to the hotel and indeed the hostellery industry. We have recently stayed at The White Hart 4 times, this is nice... but the old Swan is just how a hotel should be.. We will be back again soon. THANK YOU!!!
