25 people of retirement age were served with a splendid 3 course lunch from a pre-selected menu. The food was delicious and served by the friendly staff. Elaine & Brian were most helpful with the menu choices and with the organisation of the dining room to seat us all comfortably. Thank you to you all

Our first visit and we will definitely return. We had the Sunday roast (with 2 huge Yorkshire puddings!) and the pie accompanied by a great variety of vegetables and both meals were well cooked and very good. We decided to have desserts although we were quite full and couldn't finish them so on our next visit we will share a dessert! The Ship is a lovely comfortable pub with friendly staff and a great menu. Also dog friendly.

Simple, well cooked, good value pub food. Brilliant. In these days of pretentious menus that don't deliver and are over charged, the Ship is a welcome return to great British Pub Grub. A superb cod and chips. But as the picture shows, I thought initially I'd been served a small dog!!!! And no I'd only drunk a pint. Fantastic service, traditional dining surroundings. Came away thinking this is what Yorkshire Pubs should be about. Clearly all Shipshape at the Ship. Well done. We will be back.

Food came very quickly. Absolutely faultless food, delicious and huge portions. It really is amazing food, we said on the way home we think its the best Sunday lunch we've ever eaten out. Atmosphere was lovely, staff really friendly, helpful and welcoming. We Will definitely be visiting again

Visited today with my husband, daughter and son in law whilst we visited them in yorkshire. The food was delicious! We all had sunday dinner and found no faults. However, the staff serving seemed to have no idea what they were doing, majority very young. Our drinks werent poured correctly, wrong wine given, beer wasnt poured well. Had to explain how to make our drink. They werent very polite and seemed more interested in making conversation with each other than checking in with us. Hense the lower mark.

We decided to make the 20 minute walk from our hotel to this place because it was a pleasant evening and the food in the hotel was nice but expensive. It's almost 700 years old, the tables and chairs aren't uniform (who cares, really?) and the food is delicious. Meltingly tender home-made corned beef, turned into a hash, the aldborough chicken with hollandaise sauce,... and then the sticky toffee pudding. I usually avoid this, following some disappointing and overly-sickly versions, but this was wonderful! Moist, flavourful sponge, sweet but not sickly sauce, almonds and almond brittle, good vanilla ice cream and a milk-and-white-chocolate straw. And all the portions were generous, the glass of Malbec I had was very drinkable, the beer was well-kept and the coffee was good too. We needed the walk back afterwards!

A traditional English Pub, the Ship Inn is a hidden gem: caring management and staff; friendly locals; and fantastic food cooked to absolute perfection. Staying locally on holiday, our first visit was so good, we returned the following evening and the evening after! Today was my 65th birthday. The weather was sunny, the circular walk from Aldborough along the river was a perfect leg stretcher for us and the dogs. This was all rounded off by a table outside in the sun for lunch, two days after COVID restrictions were relaxed. From the outset the staff here were enormously friendly, this included our initial phone call to book the table. The food was wholesome, and the portions enormous. It was difficult to make a choice as the menu was quite extensive. We’ll have to go back and sample more of the menu very soon, but this was perfect birthday treat after months of lockdown.

We have eaten out as a family around eight times since the reopening of bars and restaurants. We booked a table at this restaurant for lunch and out of all these establishments that we have recently visited, this one was by far the poorest in implementing safety measures to help social distancing. We were shown to an unreserved table in the bar, despite having booked, even though there were multiple empty tables in the well-spaced restaurant area. One of the chairs at our table, was well under 1m from an occupied chair at an adjacent table. For customers trying to reach the table on the other side of ours, they had to push past where we were sitting, again well under 1m apart from us, in order to reach their table. We were asked to order our drinks at the bar. Unfortunately another customer was perched permanently at the bar, just drinking. It was impossible to place our drinks order without breaching each other's space, as the bar was small and he was in the way at the bar for our entire visit. The establishment should have encouraged him to move away from the bar and take a seat or taken our drinks order at the table. The waitresses paid little regard to distancing and leant very closely over us to serve and clear plates. Quite simply this bar had too many tables for the amount of space available and they are prioritising bushiness over customers' safety. On a positive note, the staff were pleasant and the food was very enjoyable. However we left feeling we had been put at risk due to the establishment's lack of understanding of how to implement social distancing measures.

Really disappointed been to the Ship a few years ago A few times and really impressed, however today was really sad for me as so looking forward to having Sunday roast . I ordered the roast pork expecting a piece of meat carved from a joint .. it came as the thinnest slices of meat cut from a machine with no taste apart from cardboard, the roast potatoes were hard no taste and the only saving grace was the Yorkshire pudding and the gravy . I was with a newly rekindled partner and didn’t want to complain however did tell the manager afterwards who was not bothered at all !!! only comment was wax it cut to thin !!! Won’t be going there again which is a great shame !!!

We had booked dinner here during the first week in August and having read the last two reviews, I feel there are rights and wrongs from both of them. The hand sanitiser device was there as we entered but it was empty which wasn't a great start. We went into the bar to find out where we were going to be seated and there was no social distancing although the area is quite small. There was definitely no barrier between the barstaff and the customers and we had to squeeze past several people standing at the bar . It felt like perfectly normal times which it is definitely not. Going through to the dining area the tables are well spaced, with cutlery set up on tables that were booked. The salt and pepper pots were there which is unusual in these times but we saw a member of staff cleaning them and the table etc when it was vacated. We have eaten out quite regularly in the past few weeks as we have been on holiday and this is the first place we have come across where there were no masks being worn at all. At times the staff were getting fairly close to you as a customer as well. On the positive side, the food was amazing, the service friendly and efficient. I would go again but i really wanted to put the record straight.

The prev review is utter crap. I come here so often. I bring my 2 children, ive brought other family members and friends, amd they now make the trip for the food here. We drive 40 miles for this place every week! Sometimes morethan once a week!!! - There are no less than 5 hand sanitising stations inside the ship. -There is a track and trace system on entry. -There are screens between every seating area in the restraunt. -There are new overhead fans on all the time circulating the air. -The bar area is tiny however, this has been sectioned and has screens up between the barstaff and customers. -ALL outside seating is very far spaced out as is inside but screens are also used-As for salt and pepper etc on the table, those tables that have them on along with cutlery is on set up ready for the reservation of the tables next occupants. If youd have looked closer not all tables were set.-ALL salt and pepper are rotated and cleansed between use. -ALL menues are destroyed after single use i see it often the staff tearing up the menus. - the loos get checked every 30 mins and signed off anong im sure a million other things this place has to do to be covid complient. The staff are monitored and assessed for any symptoms daily. And do not attend work if ill. Also as someone who has eaten out ALOT in jul and aug. NO RESTRAUNT ive been to (3 different weatherspoon, nandos, macdonalds, frankie and bennys, 3 different greeneking pubs) NONE of their staff wore masks or visors either. They dont have to.This place has already had a covid complience with police escort inspection and PASSED with flying colours. The covid officer had no issues and neither has anyone else. This is notpicking. I suggest you dont eat out if you want your dinner served in a hazmat suit. Then again, you still stated and ate! You didnt feel uncomfortable enough to leaveAs for the food, given that its consistent and cooked by a headchef whoes worked in some of the countries leading establisments with celeb chefs himself... and that the place is packed day after day.... its uikly your food was "average". Again you appear to have eaten it and mention nothing about sending food back etc.... Its a tiny country pub. It is a very old listed building. It is not a massive white box warehouse type..do not mistake the low beams and dark wood for unsanitary. It really isnt. The food here is amazing. You are treatedike family, The staff are lovley and do anything for you and the hosts are amazing too. To miss this place is to miss a gem.

The batter on the seafood is amazingly light, the chips crisp outside with fluffy interiors. They were more than happy to mix and match and serve us prawns with samphire and hollandaise as a starter. excellent country pub just off the A1 at Aldborough. Met up day after boxing day with our family from North East. Food was excellent even with two fussy kids. Plenty of time between courses to catch up and exchange presents. Although busy - we booked in advance - we were under no pressure to leave. everyone one had different items from the post Christmas menu and a la carte menu. Would recommend it and go back if we were in the locality. There is an annual Aldborough Literature Festival so booking well in advance would be recommended. Good selection of local beers and friendly staff.

We went for a midweek lunch and having been before already knew that this is a lovely pub full of character and we were were greeted by a roaring open fire in the cosy bar. I enjoyed my gammon steak but regretted opting for the skinny fries which were rather dry and overcooked, should have had the chunky chips. My wife chose the roasted vegetables with chicken and prawns, she asked for half rice and half chips which is never a problem in most establishments but the answer came back from the kitchen that the chef said that it was not possible, it must be rice or chips! Rather strange customer service bearing in mind the extensive words on both the website and the menu about how important the customer is, etc. etc. Whilst she did enjoy her meal the first piece of chicken did contain a large and sharp piece of bone, (maybe the chef was having a bad day). Service was otherwise friendly and efficient and no doubt we will return and maybe catch the chef on a better day.

We were touring & just happed across this place on a Sunday..... It was very very busy for family Sunday lunches but we are really glad that we hung around. The lady who greeted us at the door was very good & found us a table for two pretty quickly even though we had not booked. We both had roast dinners...one pork & one beef. They were both more than ample & excellent quality. My wife's beef was slow roasted but still rare in the middle as we love it...it was the best she had ever sampled. My crackling piece was superb as was the pork. Throughly recommend & we certainly would return if/when in the area. Thanks to all the staff who were attentive & caring.

Just back from one of the best Sunday lunch I've had for a long time. The yorkshires to die for and the beef moist and tender. The gravy is like you make at home I needed a spoon to finish it off!!!! The staff friendly and helpful especially Aileen who looked after us. Thankyou Brian and Elaine you've got it right.

We called in for lunch while doing the "Roman Ramble" walk from Boroughbridge. I had the steak, kidney and mushroom pie which was a very fine thing indeed. Fish pie also rated very good. Perfectly kept Theakston's and Black Sheep bitters completed a really lovely lunch. Friendly service from the staff too. Will return!

We were first to be seated at our table but we waited 50 minutes for our food to arrive- we understand that meals may be cooked 'to order' but as two other groups that arrived some time after were served before, it was rather a galling experience. I asked about vegetarian options and was told they were on the menu. There's only one main course option- deep fried battered halloumi, chips and mushy peas! The chef did kindly offer to make something else but it would be much better to have seen this written on the menu. The majority opinion from our group was that the food, when it eventually arrived, was reasonably good.

So i come ever now and then i had a steak last night i cant complain to how they cooked it because it was spot on , but it just wasnt seasoned at all the chips looked old , i ordered pepper sauce amd it was more like caffe au lait with a few green pepper corns in the bottom , it wasnt seasoned once again , my partner ordered the salmon which she loves , i noticed the side of veg that came with the meal the parsnips where brown and hadnt been preped properly , so we ordered the dessert i had a panacotta which looked lovery and my partner ordered the burlee , the panacotta had far too much gelatine in it and the burlee had no sugar in it which baffled me as it had rhubarb in the bottom , if it had sugar in the burlee bit it would of been loverly , i do actually love this place but it feels like there loosing the edge on the food a little bit

Heard about the great food from friends but couldn’t get past the shabby decor. Literally took one look and left. To us the ambience and decor is an integral part of the dining experience. I like a traditional pub but this was very poorly presented. Creaky old tables and chairs with dirty looking cushions that needed re stuffing 20 years ago! Also the tables were very close to each other, so everyone hears your conversation. A very cramped layout in general. Disappointing to say the least.

Have been here quite a few times as the atmosphere of a typical village pub is something to be appreciated. There is also the fact that they do a really good Gammon Steak which our son loves, hence the Birthday treat. Service was perfect. Not rushed in any way so we all had a very pleasant meal.

Neither of us like service stations, so we always look out beforehand for a good pub just off a main road junction. Just 5 minutes off the A1(M) lies this period pub in a historic village area. Popular with locals you can see why when you enter and enjoy the excellent fare, and great beer (if you are not driving!). Recommended....

We were just passing by and we spotted this little pub. Very friendly, very customer focused, very welcoming, cosy, just makes you feel so warm. The food is outstanding, our little one (3y) ate entire kids Sunday roast and half of my meat! We never saw him eating so nicely and enjoying himself! If they had rooms, we would just book ourselves for afternoon siesta! Well worth the price!

Superb large hotel with a wonderful ambience. Having hotel hopped across the UK for 21 days, the old Swan is the winner. Huge rooms, reception areas, grand dining room and loads of comfortable places to relax. Of particular note, is the lady in the coffee lounge/bar area. Her level of service, kindness, professionalism is exquisite. Perfect, friendly customer service. She really goes out of her way to make you feel welcomed.. I'm afraid I don't know her name, and did not wish to embarrass her by asking however again today 15th November she has surpassed herself with her courteous service.to myself and my partner whom is wheelchair bound.. She is an absolute credit to the hotel and indeed the hostellery industry. We have recently stayed at The White Hart 4 times, this is nice... but the old Swan is just how a hotel should be.. We will be back again soon. THANK YOU!!!
