Having been coming to Comrie for around three years now and staying in a family-owned caravan I always like to take a walk down the Main Street and venture into the cafe and Melville restaurant which is part of the Royale Hotel. I love the feel and score of the Melville but unfortunately that’s three dodgy meals the last three times we visited. Previously had a burger which tasted like it had been boiled (weird eh?), then had the best tasting risotto but unfortunately the risotto wasn’t cooked. My most recent visit was some salads…absolutely delicious tasting but one of them seemed to have a good number of what appeared to be dark dog hairs in it. I don’t own dogs and none of my family have dark hair. I spoke to the member of staff in the bar and showed him the issue. He apologised and offered a fresh dish and to take the meal from our bill, he was very nice and handled things well. We were offered a complimentary dessert which was great. One person opted for dessert and mid-eating they discovered yet another dark hair. Took this dessert back and showed the staff member again. Really disappointing and disgusting that this happened. Twice. Bar staff great but not so impressed with the lady who was at reception. I have spoken with her a few times now to book tables etc and find her to be snappy/short. And heard her tell off someone who asked for help as she was too busy. And sorry to have another moan but I really don’t like the new pool table, arcade machine and juke box. Trying to eat your dinner and chat when there’s a couple playing pool and rattling balls around a pool table is not how I want to spend my evening. Don’t think this is the best idea. I really want to love the Melville but I’ve found it disappointing for a while now….

Went to this beautiful hotel for dinner. From entering the hotel to leaving the staff were friendly and attentive. The food was first class and the chef and waitress went out there way to accommodate our dietary needs. The setting of the Royal is splendid. The dining room was a little crowded so we ate in the bar for conviviality with our diners was amazing. I had the pork belly dinner, which was outstanding. The beer and whiskey selection were very good. I had the Earthquake Ale from Black Isle brewery, which was quite good. My brother had the portobello mushroom because they were out of hamburgers. A delightful visit.

Whilst staying in a holiday cottage in Comrie we happened upon the Melville Bar connected to the Royal Hotel. We were delighted to find that it not only had an interesting range of drinks including ales - of particular interest to three of our party - but also delicious and beautifully presented food. Added to that, it has a sizeable and attractive beer garden which is also dog-friendly. The staff were friendly and efficient despite suffering from the current issues of staff shortages affecting hospitality. Thoroughly recommend a visit if you're in the area.

We ate here tonight , two lovely young staff taking care of customers in the lounge bar were friendly and efficient. The menu was extensive, we had roast chicken and Beef Cheeks , both were amazing, the accompaniments balanced the meal beautifully. The sweet menu is small, but delicious and so perfectly presented. Great atmosphere in this cosy wee pub. Well done guys , such a pleasure to be served by folk taking a personal pride in their work.

We were staying in the area and were in Comrie to take in the float parade taking place as part of the Comrie fortnight. Our party of ten, including two young children, came across the Melville at the Royal Hotel. Upon entering, the indoor area was relatively quiet, and the garden area had a few large tables available. Since it was a nice day (quite rare in this part of the world!) we opted to sit outdoors. The tables were not cleared, but this was okay and we took the dirty glasses and plates indoors to the bar area. We weren't thanked for doing this, but know that sometimes when people are busy they lose their manners which is a shame. We asked one of the bar men if it would be possible to see some food menus. He stated he would have to check with the kitchen if they were serving food (at lunch time, on a Saturday, when it wasn't particularly busy, during what I assume to be one of their 'busiest' weekends of the year). We stood waiting, like spare parts, while he made coffees for other customers (not a problem), and he then went to ask. He returned to say that they had two tables already in for food and they wouldn't be able to serve us. What got us was that there was no offer of someone coming out to take a drinks order, or that we could go and sit down and someone would let us know. When the knock-back came, there was no offer of a later time, and no sense of apology either. The service was really disappointing and front of house staff should really be better equipped to deal with situations like this.

Came with my Mum and was surprised to find this little gem. We ate at the restaurant at the back and I had the lamb which was so soft and amazing. The taste was great and I swapped the gnocchi for chips with out any problems. My mum had the Cullen skink which was equally as tasty. We followed with great coffees. The menu is varied with light bites, sandwiches and full meals. I thoroughly recommend eating here, especially if you want to avoid the normal sandwich lunch.

We had a lovely overnight stay in the hotel. It's a lovely place and has a nice laid back atmosphere. We enjoyed time in the bar. As a gin drinker I was a little disappointed with the poor selection particularly as gin is at its peak of popularity at the moment. The room was comfortable and liked the Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom. The breakfast was fab and good quality. All in all, an enjoyable stay and I would return only if I was able to get a good deal. The standard room rate of £158 is totally excessive. We got a special offer through a partner site and I think this tariff is more realistic for this hotel.

I booked a table for dinner as the hotel was nearby to where we were staying. The hotel itself looked lovely but the meal we had in the restaurant let it down. The first main course we tried order was unavailable but we weren't informed of this beforehand. The "homemade" bread tasted like stale shop bought bread. I ordered the creme brûlée for dessert which was served with raspberries that had MOULD on them! I pointed it out to the rather surly waiter who couldn't have been less interested & the message obviously didn't get back to the kitchen staff or management as not even an apology was offered. And to top it off, whatever was in the steak pie that I ate definitely didn't agree with me! I have never been so ill from a meal out before!!! Would definitely not recommend....

On a family weekend away, we drove in to Comrie. After a short walk through the town, the heavens opened. We decided to stop in to a hostelry for a drink and a snack. We were going to go in to the Royal Bar, beside the Hotel, but it prohibits under-18s and we had two young boys with us. We decided to try the Royal Hotel itself. The Hotel interior is pleasant. The Lounge bar is well laid out with a large fireplace for colder days. The selection of beers on offer was decent, with one local ale from Comrie, which I tired and enjoyed, Earthquake Ale.Staff were disinterested, at best, however. One member of staff, possibly the manager, served us unsmilingly and she engaged in no conversation, despite our being the only visitors. Our boys thanked the member of staff for their drinks, but their pleasantries were ignored. Very poor! There was a framed picture of Basil Fawlty in the toilet. Perhaps the Manager's inspiration?

During the 30 minutes we were there, there was zero engagement with any of the customers, most of whom stayed for only a short time before leaving like us.As a frequent visitor to Comrie, we know this was not a one-off occurrence - the owners need to up their game and provide a standard of service commensurate with this style of country hotel, rather than one which the Scottish hospitality industry is generally now ashamed of

We stayed in Comrie for a week in July and went to the bar most nights to use the wifi. We had a meal one night and could have done this more often but decided it was much better to buy food at the butchers and deli to cook for ourselves. This is a pleasant looking hotel but there are not enough staff, they are not welcoming and the service and food are peculiar. We often had to wait ages to be served at the bar and tables were not cleared or cleaned. My Scottish daughter-in-law was particularly irritated by the lack of service when she joined us one evening. She came to the bar while we were ordering and pointed out that the table was filthy, so the barman handed her a cloth! When we went for a meal, the ordinary tables in the bar were full so we asked for a table in the restaurant but were told a table would be free soon. We guessed they meant the large coffee table over which some diners were hunched. While we waited another couple came in and were immediately shown to the dining room, so we followed on. What was this about, I wonder? The food was OK, but pretty dull and very overpriced. The best thing about the evening was the single malt we ended with. This is such a waste when then it could be much better. I think the hotel rests on its laurels as there is so little competition.

7pm Popped in with the family on the off chance we would get a table. Staff humed and hawed and said they had a large booking for tonight, but they would give us a table , the place was empty except 2 couples who arrived the same time. Both got bread put down on the table. After half hour we asked if we could have some bread, the waiter went in too the kitchen and we heard a argument about who cuts the bread and a few choice swearing words coming from there . Another waiter appeared five minutes later and asked if we were the table that wanted more read and we told him we did not get in the first place. 40 minutes later the food arrived . I had Lamb Kofta which was rather burnt ,tasteless and looked like a big dog's jobbie . The penne pasta my girlfriend had was a plate of cheap pasta from lidl and the sauce was tasteless and the grill fried veg on top looked like charcoal . My sisters steak pie had a pastry top that look like a piece of leather on top, although she said the 5 pieces of meat inside tasted fine , The salmon and bass dish that my father in-law had was thin slices and not very fresh . They took my meal away because I could not eat it, but did offer to make me a starter because that would be quick , I said no as I told her I would go back to chalet and have toast quicker. They charged for everything that we ordered and also gave no apology as we left . Shocking place to to eat . Shocking customer service . Stay clear..

The menu is a little limited, and does not change day to day (and the documents themselves are getting a bit scruffy). We went there twice, the first night had duo of salmon and seabass, which was good. The second we had veal steaks and kidneys which were good. The wine list is reasonably varied. Service is pleasant and efficient and everyone in the hotel is very nice. While the main hotel had a nice country house atmosphere, the restaurant is standard modern style with square dark wooden tables, a little out of keeping with the rest of the hotel.

The Edinburgh Real Ale Company (ERA) brought this building back to life after many years of neglect. What they created was a lovely Highland hotel with an adjacent byre bar. They focused on local products and real ales and were very successful. After a few years they sold it. It is now run by the Millsom family, who have put very little effort into maintenance of the public areas, being almost exactly the same as they were 15 year ago. Watch out for the frayed carpets. This used to be an excellent place for a meal or drink, but now suffers from lack of ambition with a tired menu and incredibly uninspiring drinks list. I mean, being in Perthshire, you would at least expect some beer from Inveralmond/Strathbraan and so on, even in bottled form. Unfortunately not - Miller, Bud and the usual swill, no attempt at local produce.Come on, make an effort.

A slightly rocky start when i booked as after saying there was a room, the lady on reception did a slight back pedal when I told her I had a voucher for "Itison" - a gift from our daughter. Her initial reaction was that she only booked them at her quiet period to fill up the hotel but as she had already said she had a room she carried on with the booking. We were a little apprehensive when we arrived as we thought there might have been a frosty reception but the lady in question could not have been nicer. No mention was made of the booking and the lady (manageress, I think) was very helpful and multi-tasking! She served us in the bar and also took the order for- and served - our delicious bar supper. Food was cooked to order and was excellent!. My husband especially enthused over the hand made chips which accompanied his very large piece of fish..Everything was fresh and piping hot. Wonderful. The bedroom was very good, huge bed and all beautifully clean. All the staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast we had prior to checking out was also very very good. Had beetroot salmon to start and was a bit put off by the brown breadcwhich could have been fresher. This time opted for the front lounge in the hotel in front of the log fire. Service was endearing if inexperienced.Eventually ordered smoked fish, mushroom and cheese hot pot and Thai curry, initially disappointed by size of hotpot - asked for some bread ... it was heaven. Initial disappointment was unfounded. So intense , couldn't have eaten much more. The curry was light and flavoursome ... from sceptic to convert. Well worth a visit

I've been going to The Royal about once a year for about eight years now. We have friends in Comrie and always have a meal there when we visit. The food, service and decor are consistently excellent. We were a party of five Saturday night coming in at 7:30 and had to wait to be served in the bar. The dining room was full and there were a number of people waiting. So don't miss this place.

Very slow service in the bar for food. When food did arrive it wasn't worth the wait. Staff were nice but overall was very disappointed, will not rush back.

Had dinner here which was sort of pushed on us when checking in. I had read reviews so was looking forward to it. I thought that value for money it wasn't great. The starters were pricey and meagre portions. My main course lacked flavour although my companion loved the duck breast. Service was good but there was no ambiance\atmosphere in the restaurant. It was ok but very expensive. Wouldn't rush back to be honest.

Had an evening meal .steak was OK but the chips were awful frozen out of a packet which is not what I expected for the money .desert was supposed to be a crumble which turned out to be more of fruit compote with digestive biscuit sprinkled on top .husband had pancakes with some kind of fruit sauce .pancakes also out of a packet not fresh made as we expected it to be .

Stopped for a quick drink only. Lovely old fashioned bar area, very quiet as it was mid-week, did not have food but menu looked good and would certainly stop again on next visit. Bar staff friendly and location lovely. Accommodation looked to be very good for the price but did not try on this occasion.

Stopped for a light lunch on a rainy day in Scotland. We were delighted with the hotel, the service and we were allowed to have our dog accompany us in the bar. Food plentiful. What a nice hotel in a quiet village with free car parking around the corner.

We ordered 3 adult meals with wine. The food was ok if a little pricey, £16.50 for 5 small slices of lamb and veg. The coffee however, was abysmal. Served in a teapot-why? - it was grey and tasteless, like the second use of the grounds. When bringing this to the attention of the senior member of staff we were told the coffee supplier had recently changed and the staff were 'getting used to the new system'. No apology, offer of a fresh cup or refund. Poor show.

Found this one just a bit above average, which wasn't enough to justify the 30 min drive each way.It had been recommended to us by friends, so maybe just an off night.Restaurant was busy, but we had booked 4 days in advance.Service was very goodAmbience above averageMenu about averageFood quality average - vegetables a bit soggy, and chips over-crispy and greasy. Not worth the journey for us

Popped in here for a drink, nice and cosy bar area, however let down by grumpy staff who didn't really want to be there and was loudly complaining it was supposed to be his day off!

Decided to have dinner with our friends despite misgivings. Was not disappointed. Initially had to go to lounge for our drinks. Then had to wait 40 minutes for our starters. Did hear when other tables complained that they were short staffed. Main course was disappointing and not cheap. Menu a hashbash of sheets of paper. Waiting staff seem unable to clear empty glasses from tables. Won't be back.

Eaten in this hotel restaurant for numerous years, this was the worst experience of food I've had in the restaurant ever. I ordered devilled kidneys and sausage with Gorgonzola mash, what arrived was a plate of oil, kidneys and sausage with a gravy that was totally disgusting, the mash was a microwaved mess, I would question if the food had been prepared that day.I spoke with the proprietor and made my point, he seemed surprised, may I say I normally praise the place but our experience tonight was not acceptable in any restaurant. My wife had battered haddock that was just acceptable but not to the standards previously. Sad for a normally excellent venue !

What a fab and cosy place. They have a wide range of choices on the menu but we always grade a place by how good there burgers are and we weren't let down. We also tried out the local Earthquake ale which we would strongly recommend. Great service and they service food from 6:30 for hungry walkers.

Nice old real Scotish Hotel with some history on the walls, open fire and dog friendly in the bar.You had the choice to eat in the bar or restaurant with the same menu.I have not seen Kidneys on a menu as a main course in a long time as it's a favourite of mine and no on at home likes them had to have them and was not disappointed. My husband had the salmon which was also very good. Some main courses came with veg included but ours needed it as extra we ordered some the only disappointment was it was over cooked. My husband had the cheese board which included ginger bread and some different cheeses and it was not more expensive than the rest of the deserts. My choice was the scotch pancakes which was a little disappointing which seem like a some squashed over ripe banana, syrup and ice cream. The service was good and attention and there was some local cask ales.

We had a snack in the evening as we didn't feel like eating a full meal. There is a good choice on the menu and the food was good. (This is a Michelin rated place, so it should be).The service was good and the lady who co-owns the hotel is a friendly, helpful person who ensures you have as good an experience as possible.Lovely charm and ambience all add to a super dining experience.

We initially went for a drink at the Royal Hotel one lunchtime, but having seen the restaurant menu and the dining room we decided to book for an evening meal. The restaurant is split into two rooms and were were seated in the less formal room which had a very colonial feel and the very warm decor made for an excellent atmosphere. The initial service we received from the waiters was excellent and we were made to feel very welcome. After enquiring about children's meals we were informed that the majority of the meals (inc. Battered Haddock) could be provided in smaller portions. However, when we went to order the Haddock for our son, a female waitress (possibly more senior) stated that this could not be provided in smaller portions. When we tried to explain that the waiter had informed us that it was available, she was very abrupt and a bit patronising, this experience left us feeling rather embarrassed. Somewhat put out by her manner I asked if she could confirm this with the chef. After a couple of minutes the waitress came out of the kitchen gave the thumbs up as if she had done us a big favour and disappeared, an apology would have been nice. From this point on the service returned to the exceptional standard we had experienced on arrival and the food was excellent and was good value.Despite the experience of one member of staff, we really enjoyed our meal at the Royal and will definitely be returning.I especially recommend the locally brewed Earthquake Ale.

Slight panic. Where do you eat dinner in rural Scotland on Easter Sunday? I visited the tripadvisor site and discovered two local hotels. One looked a bit uninviting, the other more appealing. I phoned and made a booking for 20:00. Arriving at the Royal Hotel we were pleasantly surprised by the looks of the exterior, and on entering found a copy of Alastair Sawday on a foyer table, a good sign. Our spirits lifted again. There was the gentle murmur of guests in the lounge having pre-dinner drinks and a few tables in occupied in the dining room. While having a wee dram we looked at the menu and gave our dinner orders: cullen skink, venison with haggis, rhubarb & apple crumble, gravlax & smoked salmon, roast lamb, poached pear with walnuts and blue cheese. The meal was delicious. The venison & haggis absolutely outstanding, the venison perfectly cooked, pink and tender, the haggis restoring my faith in this often unappealing local creation. The one let-down was the gravlax, no dill, no flavour. The crumble delicious - I could have eaten a second. The staff were friendly & not over attentive. All congratulations to the Chef and his staff for a delicious meal.

We dined here (with our eldest son) on our last of 3 nights staying in the hotel. The food was very good - I chose Cullen Skink followed by venison (with some haggis), both of which were very tasty, accompanied by a couple of pints of the local ale.All round a very pleasant evening.

Mixed review. Been to the Royal a few times. Disappointed with frozen chips with one main meal and what tasted like (smash) potatoes with the other. Garlic bread was a roll sliced into 3 bits with butter in between. At prices paid would have expected better. Service has improved since last visit - nice ambiance

We wanted try eating out in the area and went to the Royal Hotel, very disappointing.Welcome was efficient but "cool." There was no atmosphere in the restaurant which didn't add to our enjoyment. After 25 minutes from ordering I had enquire about my soup, it appeared shortly afterwards with the explanation that it had been given to another table, surprising since the restaurant was very empty. The main course from the specials menu was disappointing with the meat (pork) overcooked and dry without great taste.Wouldn't rush back there.

Have visited before and have always enjoyed a meal at The Royal. Visited with friends again last week and thoroughly enjoyed my three course meal with a good selection on the menu. I had the local Scottish smoked salmon starter, followed by Peat smoked Haddock Kedgeree and for dessert the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Really enjoyed the whole experience and will be back again when next in the area.

Almost 5 pounds for a cappuccino for which no order has been taken at first, for which you then have to wait more than 20 minutes, with a spoon and sugar missing and, as a highlight, a 10% service fee appears on the bill? As beautiful as it is in Gleneagles - unfortunately we didn't like it at all...

We were enjoying a nice drink in the beer garden one sunny afternoon, when a youth started shouting & swearing at us because we were English (which was funny in itself because none of us are 100% English). The locals were appalled at his behaviour & the landlord immediately ejected him, however, it cast a shadow on our visit.

Went for lunch yesterday with my parents and dog on arrival our table was clearly marked ours and there was already a bowl of water awaiting my dog I thought this was super sweet and thoughtful, the waitress we had was brilliant with my wee Jack Russell she gave him a few biscuits and attention he loved it. Service was quick and the food as always was delicious. Lovely warm welcoming place to eat out and we always choose here when we go for lunch. Great menu lots of choice.

I give up, I really do. Have stopped using the restaurant because the food is pretty poor and the staff are surly at best. This morning I wanted to purchase a food item which they have stocked for years. First young girl I asked couldn't understand what I was asking for, second one said they didn't stock it although she has served me in the past and the third one said it had sold out but they might be getting some in in a couple of weeks. Several other local people have mentioned how rude the staff were. Hospitable is not a word you can use for this place and yet years ago it used to be good on all counts.
