I was trying the new menu and it was really interesting. Bold flavours playing with Scottish products. Plenty of veggie and vegan options out of the classic (the vegan pastrami sandwich was amazing). Affordable prices. 100% recommended.

This place “The Royal Dick”, was right next to the tour we had just been on for Pickering Gin. We popped in here for drinks afterwards and have to say it was pretty disappointing. The place decor wise looks ok and they have disabled toilet but the staff behind the bar didn’t know the first thing about the gin they were selling and what would go best with it so we could enjoy the different gins we tried to their full potential. We had steak pie here which was okay but was definitely of the shop bought cook from frozen variety!! Their menu is very small and vastly based on everything going with chips. Chips with cheese, chips with gravy, chips with curry etc etc etc But if it’s a snack type place you are looking for then this is the place to be!! It’s not a bad thing if that’s what you like and what you’re wanting at the time. The place was heated which was good as after being at the Pickering Gin Tour it gave us a bit of a heat up. It’s a shame this place we feel is loosing a trick here just due to staffs lack of alcohol knowledge. It would only take a bit paper and pen with written info for staff to follow on what goes with what Gin best, not rocket science. The surrounding like I said was nice and as it was the afternoon there wasn’t a lot of people in but as time passed more people came in and we could see it’s probably a busy and popular little place. It’s not that it was a bad place it was maybe more that it wasn’t our sort of place possibly?! All in all combining here with the tour we did have a good day but it could have been more if staff knew their stuff. Must add the staff were very nice and friendly. Hopefully you’ll take our constructive criticism on board and tweet bits here and there as this place could be a real winner.

Booked it based on the gallery menu and didn’t realise that the Royal Dick is a different business. Food was defrosted snacks which were fairly tasteless. They forgot part of our order. No one in charge. Just a few young guys out of their depth. Rotten start to our visit so we didn’t hang about. Wine served in tumblers and poor quality. Oh dear! Give it a miss.

After looking around the amazing summerhall venue I couldn’t believe out the back in the courtyard the veterinary students had their very own pub! I’m surprised by the negative reviews as I found the royal dick a really interesting historical place. You can feel the history and how it would have been full of students back in the Victorian day. Great place. Open fires. Soo worth a visit.

So it’s two weeks before the Edinburgh festival and the town is not at its busiest but defiantly heating up. We paid the pricey sum of £9.17 for our two drinks ( medium glass of white wine and a pint of IPA) served by a very charming bar person. My understanding is that white wine is served in a stem glass so that the heat from your hand does not warm the wine. The Royal Dick is one of a number of pubs who have missed this important detail and seemingly are not even able to provide a stem glass on request. My wine came in a robust tumbler.

This is a nice bar with a good atmosphere, but when we were there last Saturday evening, the staff started serving the drinks in disposable plastic cups from about two hours before closing. We explained that we were sitting inside, but the barman responded that it was because he wanted to get away on time and it applied to all customers. That's a lot of unnecessary plastic and it isn't very nice drinking from disposable cups. It's not as if the drinks are cheap.

Really disappointed at Summerhall. The Royal Dick closes at 1am. Arrived and tried to order at 12.20am. Bar staff refused to serve us, as they said they were closed. We sat outside nonetheless. At 12.30am a company of four came outside with 4 beers clearly served then. We went back in and asked to be served again. Bar staff refused to serve us for a second time. Being regular customers that here 2-3 a week for coffee/drinks as it has a yard, that’s totally unacceptable and unprofessional.

This hidden gem was recommended to us by friends so my husband and I checked it out for a drink. It’s a very cute bar. My husband liked the IPA and we had a lovely time sitting outside in the beer garden with our drinks. We visited on cinco de Mayo so I ordered the tequila -groni. They were out of tequila so I couldn’t get it, no bother I was fine with the regular negroni. Trying to be nice I said “no worries I just picked tequila bc it’s cinco de Mayo” and the bartender gave us the old “you’re not in America” and told us that cinco de Mayo is an American holiday. Not super nice or particularly accurate. Maybe not a great place for tourists.

First visit and it will be the last visit. Was playing an escape game next door and popped in for a drink afterwards. Was there with family including my 60 year old mother who doesn’t drink. It was the fringe but it wasn’t particularly busy at one of the back bars.Joined a couple of people who were standing in a line and heard one of the bar staff say, ‘stand along the bar and not in a line, we are a pub and not a bank, surely you have all been to a pub before’ he wasn’t being funny he was just trying to be smart. I approached the bar and asked politely for a cup of tea for my elderly mother. He made no eye contact and said bluntly, ‘no the machine isn’t working and walked away from me’ he looked at me and reluctantly asked if I wanted something else. I was just thinking of what else my mum might have so said ‘I’m just having a think’ He said ‘okay enjoy your think and walked away from me’. I’ve been in a lot of pubs and worked in a lot of pubs and could not believe the way the guy had spoken to me. When I returned to my table my friends told me that the same guy had also spoken to them like they were rubbish so we all left without buying a drink. If this was my pub I would be furious that staff are being rude to customers.Judging by other reviews this seems to me a common occurance at this pub.

Me and a few friends were there before a pickerings gin distillery. After the tour we decided to stay for a few drinks and enjoy the sun. Second round of drinks we were served by a horrible rude lady. When ordering drinks we made a mistake and asked for 5 gin and tonics instead of four gin and tonics and a gin a lemonade (which we politely appologised for) and the lady threw her hands up in the air and replied "well what do you want?" We again appologised (at this point only the gins were in the glass, not the mixers) and confirmed our order and she took one of the gins away and sarcastically replied "well I'll just keep this here incase you change your mind again." Appreciate the bar was busy so we tried to make light of the situation and asked if she'd had a stressful day and she snapped back "No, not at all!". Earlier on in the day we had one of the san pelegino lemonades but we weren't told the name so when asked what lemonade we replied the cloudy one in a can and she rolled her eyes and said "I've actually never heard of that, don't know what you mean, which one is it?!" Surely there couldn't have been that many lemonades to choose from she was the bar woman afterall. After that service we finished our drinks and swiftly left. Took our money elsewhere to somewhere the staff don't speak to people like rubbish. Shame really cause the setting is lovely.

The dishes sounded like they had a lot of content but had very little substance. Mainly a bowl of rocket with bits in. We were both still hungry and had to ditch most of the greens due to overkill. The dessert wasn't much better. A very dry cheesecake. We asked for cream to moisten and the waitress came out with a can of squirty cream but didn't allow us to use it ourselves. She just squirted a very small amount at the side. Service was a bit on the slow side also even though it wasn't busy. The Royal Dick Bar & Kitchen back in the day was the Small Animal Hospital - hence its ambience is not necessarily one of cosy comfort but more of basic utility.Summerhall is the home of Pickering's Gin and, on site, it houses a micro brewery and a micro distillery. Needless to say, The Royal Dick majors on Pickerings Gin. The place was extremely busy when we walked in and found our way to the bar. However, service was friendly and immediate and two superb gin cocktails were promptly made with a generous slice of grapefruit each. Delicious and refreshing. The rooms were all busy with drinkers and diners - and the food did look so good and so healthy. Though we did not stay to eat. It was such a hot, sunny day that we went outside and eventually found seats in the beer garden. We most certainly wish to return - but definitely outwith this particular busy weekend. 2017 is the 70th birthday of Pickering's Gin and there are celebrations afoot, so we shall return later in the year to not only soak up the atmosphere but to savour the food and drink. It goes without saying that this establishment will be a focal point of the celebrations!

I desperately want to love the Royal Dick. Summerhall is a great thing for the community and the ambience, drinks and food are all good but.... the service is just so poor. The staff are friendly enough but they've got no hustle. Standing at an empty bar while three or four staff are oblivious to your presence or flirting with someone pretty is the norm here. I tried to give some feedback to the manager but he was exceptionally rude and defensive. My visit was later on when it was quiet so the managers excuse that they'd been busy earlier was irrelevant. We've had some good times here, and our last two visits had given us hope they'd got their act together but the service we got last night was awful. With some customer service training and good management I'd give the Royal Dick 5 stars.

Went for lunch at a weekend. The food is decent slightly trendy pub-restaurant food, and the setting is of course a plus. However, it's completely bizarre that a place that brews its own (rather nice) ales should then ruin them by keeping and serving them at a temperature suited for tasteless lagers. I'm sure they used not to do this.

Great informal atmosphere with lively, friendly staff and a good local produce menu. We had lunch after the official Pickering Gin tour and enjoyed a really lovely, tasty meal at a best venue. Would highly recommend.

The place is amazing, it was the old veterinary school. The stuff from the vet school become decoration on the wall and even on the tables. Pleasant atmosphere, nice music not so loud. Good food, not excellent 100% but taste and well cooked. Friendly staff! Great place where to have a drink or a dinner with friends. Well recommended.

First time in the Royal Dick but Summerhall is a regular place during the Edinburgh Festival. It's tucked away through the courtyard and you enter through the main doors at Summerhall. Great atmosphere from the minute I entered and a really good selection of beers. Typical 'up the town' prices of £4.90 for a pint of really good Paolozzi beer from the Edinburgh Beer Factory. Our dinner was great with the star of the show being the cheeseboard. The manager Paul gave the best welcome and the friendliest service and really made it a great night out. It's a quirky, fun and fabulous place that made a real change from the usual Edinburgh offerings.

Nice and relaxed with good choice of beers. Really enjoyed the Barney's beers which are made in the micro-brewery on site at Summerhall. First time in this bar and will definitely be back.

Not really a review but more of a riposte to Laszlo '1 review' M. Next time you have an issue, try bringing it up with management while you're actually in the bar instead of taking to your keyboard to produce ignorant 'reviews' ( or should I say 'review' as you have only one, I hope you signed up just to perform your hatchet job) I am the new manager of the Royal Dick and I wasn't 'chugging beers' I chugged ONE beer in less than 5 seconds so you're obviously jealous. I also don't take kindly to rat bags such as yourself who feel it is OK to rag about someone's job anonymously online instead of being an adult and bringing your concerns directly to me, but then, Laszlo M isn't your real name and you obviously have a vendetta rather than any real concerns.I'm genuinely sorry you hate water to the extent that it causes you to write weird metaphor, next time don't bother wasting electricity by writing on trip advisor, just put it straight onto the toilet paper before you wipe.YoursPaul Donegan

I had a lovely time at summerhall, I went to see some art exhibitions upstairs, and then I went to the royal dick for a drink. I was horrified by the amount of napkins being wasted by the bar. the management is a joke. I was also given a glass of water with every pint I ordered, even when I asked not to. They were then simply thrown away or left on the bar, under another napkin. For an establishment that prides itself on having a distillery 'in the backyard' I was confused and slightly horrified by the lack of care and attention payed to these smaller accents. The man who apparently runs things was swanning around and chugging beers behind the bar, speaking in an insincere manner about his establishment. I will not be returning to the royal dick, for it is clearly is mismanaged.

We had a beer here before our tour of the attached Pickering's Gin distillery. It's a lovely pub in a quirky location with lots of little seating areas. We didn't try the food but it smelled lovely.

I feel just a little bad giving away what a great place this is for lunch. We shared the craked pepper squid which was surprisingly tender and served hot and fresh. My fish sandwich was filled with tender fried fish and as big as my head. The tomatoes were so fresh and flavorful as well. My spouse had the chicken sandwich and praised it for how moist and perfectly cooked the chicken was. High praise from someone who avoids chicken breasts as they are so often dry. Shout out to the young cook for a job well done! Prices were a treat as well. Combine it with a gin tour and visit the galleries for an enjoyable afternoon without having to walk uphill for a bit.

They have gin on tap what more could you want!! :)The bar itself is uncomfortable with no nice chairs to sit in. Its also a bit of a trek outside the old town if you're not there to do the tour or something. You need to go in through summerhall university which makes it a little confusing to find. Staff were nice however. Would have no reason to return i dont think.

Booked for lunch declared ,shellfish allergy, was told. That they could not guarantee cross contamination asked how serious the allergy was ,I have an episode pen. Was told that someone should have contacted me about it ,they did not, waste of a journey and paying for parking. Will not be back. If you have any allergies avoid this place.

I almost never leave reviews, but I felt I had to because I felt so ripped off here. I'm a local and had time to kill before work so I popped in for lunch. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, but I got the smallest piece of avocado toast I've ever seen for a tenner. I'm still hungry. I sort of knew it would be a mistake to go somewhere touristy but now I know I definitely won't be back. There are nicer places on Cockburn Street, never mind the rest of the Old Town.

Went with family to have a nice breakfast but were all utterly disappointed. Very small selection of breakfast items and all potions were far too small. I ordered full Scottish breakfast but left feeling hungry after spending over £1, sausages both meat and vegan were very nasty in their taste and all items were below average for an premium price - never again.

We ate here before the Lion King with the VIP Ambassador Lounge deal and it was all very good . I had read some of the negative reviews and was a bit wary after booking but it was a really nice experience. The food was fine , we had chicken skewers and soup and burgers and there was no complaints , but the service was excellent . The girls who served us were efficient and very friendly. They took us up to the lounge and again we had friendly service . All made for a great night , well done
