Great service and great Sunday roast!

We visited for the Monday quiz - it was the first time we’ve been despite driving/walking past so many times. The quiz was brilliant, well hosted and fun. Not too easy and not too difficult. The pub itself is really warm and welcoming. There were lots of events being advertised which all look well thought through and exciting; if there was a way to sign up for news I definitely would as there’s definitely a lot going on! Drinks were great too - good non-alcoholic choice. Looking forward to returning.

A real old world gem. Cheeky little Star Wars references scattered around. Lovely big open fire 🔥 too. The bar lady was very friendly and made us both feel welcome. Wish it was our local 😪

Sunday royal roast (mixed roast) was a generous portion and very good value for money although just average in terms of taste

Great pub, with excellent food, the sport on during the day and live music in the evening. We've spent a couple of lazy Sundays here and it's great!!

Beetroot hummus, warm flatbread with salad washed down with a good "porters" nice X Live music on a Sunday which adds to the atmosphere

I’ve now celebrated my birthday here twice and cannot recommend it highly enough. Great location! The staff were fab - friendly and extremely attentive with the food and drinks orders, despite there being 12+ of us. Food was delicious! I’d recommend the beef burger. Drinks very reasonably priced. Everything you’d want from a pub. My favourite pub in New Cross (and one of my favourites in the whole of London!)

Had a meal with my son in the Royal Albert couple of weeks ago which was excellent & very reasonably priced. Went with my wife Saturday night & the atmosphere was superb with an excellent live 4-piece jazz band in too…loads of people dancing & was lots of fun…easy to recommend for food, selection of drinks, great staff & atmosphere.

Sid & Brandon are top lads. great service and well priced pints. Great pint of XPA!

Really enjoy the drinks options of beer and cider options. Clean nice pub that gives off romantic, cute/ homey vibes. Lovely staff as well. One of the best if not the best in the area if you ask me

Such a great pub. Went for a roast dinner on Sunday - food was incredible (and plentiful!). The service was amazing, everyone was so friendly and attentive. Decor and atmosphere is really nice. They’re dog friendly too so that was great. We go for a LOT of roast dinners, usually try somewhere different every Sunday, and this is definitely up there for us, top 3! Had a really nice time, will definitely be back and would definitely recommend.

I would love to see Open Mic weekly .

It's a great place but they need to have more open mics with Archie as host. Once a month is too little. Hence why I've given 3 stars instead of 5. At the least, every fortnight, like come on, Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler's brother David and many others played there too. How we gonna discover local talents nowadays if you make the live open mics a rarity? Make it much more than once a month please.

Fantastic staff and drinks. Very friendly. (imho) the Open Mic is so unique with the most ethnically and socially diverse Open Mic I've come across in London. I wish the Open Mic was weekly like other pubs. However unlike other bars / pubs, the Open Mic here represents a unity and harmony of so many different cultures and beliefs that is not seen anywhere else. We deserve more of that... Many thanks.

We rocked up on a Sunday afternoon, without a booking, after a 5-year-old's birthday party, with a group of hyperactive kids and tired adults. The staff, service and food were all excellent. We were made to feel very welcome, despite being a rowdy group! We had a lovely time, the perfect Sunday afternoon in a pub. Thank you.

Gluten free beer on TAP!!!!! Have been coming here since 2013 then moved away. I'm so glad to have got a job close by so I get to come back again. It's an amazing space, really relaxed, great lighting, comfy chairs and awesome staff.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would, because Seb is fabulous! Thanks so much for keeping us fed, watered, and entertained for our punk weekender x

A lovely, spacious pub providing warm and welcoming service and tasty food.

Neither myself or any of my friends have taken to the soul-sucking refurb but it clearly has its fans so good luck to them.

Top Location,das Essen war gut. Live-Musik und Ambiente ist vom feinsten. Leckeres Darkbier getrunken und Service ist superfreundlich.

Lovely pub - bit expensive, but it's worth it for the atmosphere. Friendly staff, great buskers night, really nice vibe, extremely comfy chairs if you get in quick enough, all around nice energy. Didn't eat there on this occasion but from past experience, food nothing to write home about particularly but good if fairly standard selection and enjoyable. Have taken my parents here before as well, so well rounded for that kind of occasion as well as a nice night out. Old Fashioneds are tip top.

This used to be my favourite pub and would go almost every weekend, and since the renovation I’ve only been once. It’s been completely completely stripped of any character it had. What was a classic English pub and amazing music venue, is now a soulless Gastro pub. Very sad

Lovely place and nice and helpful staff The manager is a good chap supporting local community and culture. There is a hidden gen in this pub, Jessy. She is a super star... She seems to have mastered the art of customer engagement and business development with the best skills that are in this industry There is another chap in the bar who is super friendly and helpful if you bother to ask for help, I got the best drinks and still managed my alcohol intake limits !!!!

With a family reunion booked and people coming from all over we arrived only to be told that the kitchen was closed. Apparently they forgot to call us and tell us..bit late for that by then with people arriving by car, bus and train. Obviously it was a mistake but a shocking one. Be very careful to double check your bookings as they clearly aren’t on the ball. It’ll be our last visit there.

Was here to do portrait drawing. Had a lovely evening. First time going to something like this and really enjoyed it.

Been here a few times now and have always enjoyed chilling over a beer. Staff are very hospitable and knowledgeable about the draught offerings. Would definitely continue visiting when back in the area

Had dinner at the RA last night (30th July). We were served by the same waiter as too long ago. He was, as usual, on top form: friendly, efficient, just the right amount of attention. We had medium (her) and rare (me) roast beef and it was delicious and nicely presented. There was plenty of it with Yorkshire pudding, caramelised carrot, white and red cabbage, roast potatoes. We now intend to come more often although other New Cross restaurants are closer. We've been missing out! A band was setting up, too late for us on a Sunday, but you could see jazz devotees aplenty waiting for a good performance.

Waited 40-50 minutes for main courses to arrive, of which the second meal turned up after the other person had finished. The restaurant was quiet and the manager seemingly disorganised. Food was average on arrival.

Fantastic Roast!!! From a East Londoner to come to South London to this lovely Pub. Very nice indeed 👌 Seb the main guy that served us, wicked energy fantastic guy and all the staff there really nice people.

weird atmosphere this evening. very loud pop punk music which left the bar inside empty. really intense and wanted to stay outside. not enjoyable, have come here for years

I marked this great place down due to its Sunday roast. They don't do lamb, but steak, or chicken. or vegetarian. But that wasn't the issue. The chicken roast was delicious, but the potatoes were not good. In fact, they were hard. I thought they hadn't been cooked properly. My guests said they were frozen Aunt Bessy. Unfortunately when I spoke with staff the response was somewhat bemusing: "Unfortunately we don't have any more potatoes left." This seemed strange. We were the first people to eat and other customers later arrived and had what appeared to be potatoes on their plate. So mark down and don't return.

What a find! We were going to a gig at the O2, and staying in Deptford for the night, so we wanted a place for a meal and a couple of drinks before going to the concert. Found the Albert through Google, and booked a table for two hours at three in the afternoon. When we got there, the place was locked, but Don (the chef) let us in after hearing our story. He looked after us until John (proprietor) arrived, then prepared the BEST tapas we have had outside Spain. John was the perfect host and insisted on standing us our first round by way of apology for the misunderstanding. This is going to be a regular visit for us when attending the O2. We can highly recommend the staff, food and excellent choice of beers and wines available. Thanks, John and Don, and see you again very soon.

The classic southern pub, almost in the point when New Cross Road meets Deptford High street. Especially nice on Sundays with high quality live music.

Brilliant food & atmosphere. Staff are friendly. Well priced for the quality of food! We had the cheeseburger croquettes, cheese and jalapeños bites and the crispy chicken wings. All cooked so well and tasted amazing!

My brother and I stopped in to try a Sunday roast during our first trip to England. Waiter seemed nice at first. We were sat in a backroom with small chairs we could barely fit in and we aren't large people. We ordered drinks and the beef roast dinner. The waiter asked if we wanted pink or well done beef, I replied pink. When the dinner arrived, the Yorkshire pudding was very dry and had a burnt taste and the beef was without a doubt well done. When I showed the waiter the overcooked meat he insisted it was pink. You can judge by the photos. I'm not an idiot. The potatoes and veg were good although the purple cabbage wasn't for me. But I was disappointed in my dinner. We ordered the waffle, banana brulee with a coconut sauce with ice cream for dessert. Do yourself a favor and ask for forks as the spoons made it very difficult to eat it with. The dessert was overall pretty tasty, would have liked more banana brulee, but flavors worked well together.

Excellent lunch. Barman had fabulous knowledge and was very attentive. Food was first class.

Every time I come in the menu seems to have changed, but if the kitchen see this…please keep the nacho jalapeño bites! 🙌

Think the pub is kinda stuck between what it wants to be. Is it a locals pub or trying to be an upmarket bar. Staff can be hit and miss, sometimes friendly and other times pretty dismissive

Decent ambiance. Good for a quick catch up with friends. The pub is easily accessible by public transport so you can leave your car at home.

The Sunday roast menu was very nice. We ended up having the chicken and the roast pork. Both dishes were excellent extra compliments to the chef. The waiting staff were excellent as well. Thanks for a great dinner.

Good atmosphere, food was good (nachos plus fish and chips see picture) choice of cask ales. Dark wood and low lighting in the bar area, or a lighter dining area near the cooking. Ideal place to start our evening, could have easily stayed wish we had a local as good. Definitely return :)

So shocked to see the pub had completely changed! Use to be so cosy and busy, we didn't stay for a drink in the end as the music was anxiety inducing and empty on a Saturday night 🥲

LOVED IT. Great restoration with beautiful open feel. Fabulous array of real-ale, predominantly from the Portobello Brewery. Excellent food from an open-plan visible kitchen. Friendly staff

Staff, food and service top notch. However, being based within a coveted & leading connection-led area,identity and character is lacking compared to say endeavour or Avalon cafe, with recent sanitising refurb not doing legacy justice (sultry, edgy, flavoursome). Current Jazz nights do not compare to matchstick piehouse and buster mantis. Deptford does not need another gentrified safe venue. Pub quizzes need to become spectacles rather than run of the mill - less knowledge based, more experience-led. Comedy nights need to be full-on edgy against Amersham or up the creek. Be daring & bold.

An excellent Sunday roast in a very welcoming London pub. The service was very prompt and our portion size was generous, even our dog was made to feel most welcome. We will definitely be back soon !
