A friend and I enjoyed (immensely) afternoon tea consisting of a cheese scone + plain scone with jam and clotted cream. The scones were melt-in-the-mouth - absolutely fabulous. Whether you live in Topsham or nearby or are just visiting, this experience should top of your to do list.

Had breakfast here twice while out cycling the route 2 cycle path. Very impressed. They must be using a real butcher for bacon and sausage as these are not the standard crap you get at cafes, other produce also of a high standard too. Meals all delivered piping hot and perfect. Gluten Free option well catered for and the chef trimmed the GF and normal breakfast to come out at the same time (a lot a cafe Can’t manage this). Busy cafe that fills up quick but we’ve been lucky and always managed to get a table, not all could. Only thing that could be better is a endless tea pot?? Both visit we finished our tea before breakfast arrived, but that is also down to the fact the meals are exquisitely cooked to order.

Booked breakfast for a group of touring rugby players. Excellent service and food from Joe and his staff. Will definitely visit again.

This is a top place for breakfast. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the amount of food we had for a "Half Route" spot on. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Oh and the loos are also spotless

I visited Route 2 for breakfast a couple of days ago. A warm friendly welcome, fabulous good value breakfast served by lovely staff who care about their customers, looking forward to my next visit!

Perfect getaway from the city. I will definitely be booking another trip. Beautifully clean and comfortable with a nautical theme. Its in an ideal location in the heart of Topsham with beautiful views. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food delicious in the Route2 cafe/restaurant. Cant wait to go there again.

We are currently in Route2 in Topsham. This is a cosy and loveable cafe with a good range on the menu. There is a lovely chatty, happy feeling where dogs seem welcome. There are families here and the atmosphere is just lovely. It is a few metres from the river and the amazing quayside. The staff are so friendly and great at their jobs. They warned us of a 20 minute wait for food (which was fine) and then delivered in 10. They are attentive without being obtrusive, and the food is wonderful. It’s easy to get to on the train from Exmouth or Exeter and well worth a visit We have never eaten here before but will most certainly be back.

Route 2 offers fair and honest food with a friendly atmosphere. We visited on 12/08/2023 and spoke to the new owner (of 10 months) who is doing a great job. What's so good (?) - there are no pretensions that you are there for no other reason is to be served good honest food. Having previous visited a well known hotel in Topsham and been ignored and found the staff with an attitude problem it was great to get excellent service at Route 2 - keep it up. Okay, it's a road side café next to the estuary but the owner and staff understand that to be pleasant and prompt and deliver service with food is what is needed - they take the medal. Good luck to Route 2. We will be back and we will also book a stay with you. Also reading the review from the cyclist (gave 2 stars) I think that the remarks were totally wrong but doesn't surprise me . As an ex-cyclist I know that many mamils on flash bikes have are an elevated sense of their own importance.

It was my daughter's 14th Birthday and she stayed with her friend & I in the Haldon 2-Bed Apartment. We were stunned by the beautiful views of the estuary and standard of the spacious apartment with great facilities. The next morning we had a delicious, reasonably-priced full English breakfast in Route Café with family & friends and the service was amazing. A heart-felt thank you to all the wonderful, friendly staff - in particular Bob - who made the whole experience one to remember and cherish.

Good value for money ! I spent 2 nights in in one of their apartments ... And it was perfect! . Modestly presented but well equipped, clean and comfortable It is . located in the centre ..a stone’s throw away from the river/ estuary . The hosts were friendly and accommodating ! Route 2 were great at accommodating our large group even on a Bank Holiday weekend. We pre-ordered our food in advance so it was super slick once we arrived, as well as being delicious. I also thought it was great value - What more could you ask for!

These apartments are in the most perfect location in Topsham. We stayed in The Estuary apartment, which had a large open plan lounge kitchen-diner, with a lovely view and really pretty separate bedroom with a lovely ensuite. The kitchen was well equipped and has everything you need to self cater. There were little added extras like a dinky bottle of washing up liquid and a sponge, and some milk in the fridge. It’s these things that make all the difference in my opinion. However, why would you cook when the food in the cafe below is amazing. The owners Kate and Joe were so welcoming and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Such great value and highly recommend.

We had a cream tea for eight adults on a Sunday afternoon. We phoned ahead and the cafe reserved one of the large tables for us. And the cream teas were excellent.

I recently held my big birthday bash at Route 2. There were 50 or so guests and everyone had a wonderful time. The food was excellent, the staff very friendly and the atmosphere great for a party as it was formerly a pub, The Steam Packet Inn. The owners Joe and Kate were so easy to deal with and the cake from Topsham Cakes was excellent. I would definitely recommend Route 2 for a party. Robert Forster

This is our usual go-to place when visiting Topsham. Never disappoints. Only had coffee and scone & teacake today but excellent. The cheese scone was the best I have ever had. Plus, always friendly and efficient service.

This is our second time staying at Route 2 Cafe and Apartments, once again it was a great experience! We stayed in the Zephyr room before, stayed in the larger Estuary room this time. The room was clean and spacious and had great facilities. Some noise from the cafe below once it was open in the morning, but didn’t bother us as we were up for Breakfast anyway! Food was delicious and everyone was incredibly friendly. I am Ceoliac and the chefs were able to accommodate my dietary needs. I had a Gluten Free Eggs Benedict. A lovely weekend away! Highly recommended when staying in Topsham 👍🏻

This cosy unpretentious cafe serves excellent top quality meals all day. Whether you have a classic full English breakfast or just a flat white and one of Ryan's famous cheese scones you won't be disappointed by the standard, selection, service and price. The location is excellent, right next to the riverfront and the well known cycle shop is next door, so you can hire a bike and take the scenic and safe off- road path along the estuary to Exmouth. Great young professional staff with a lovely atmosphere. A private sunny courtyard for the summer months is a great place to enjoy one of their fab ice creams too.

Hidden gem really, didn't realise it was here, only spotted it as it mentioned cycle stop outside. Ordered 2 veggie breakfasts and lattes. The breakfast was delicious, a large thick mushroom, 2 eggs, 2 veggies sausages, 2 tomatoes, baked beans and chunky bread. Could not fault it. Also asked for the lattes to be delivered at the same time, and they did. Will definately return.

One of the best breakfasts around! A wide range of options from light to large. The quality of all the ingredients really stood out - we often find cafes cut costs by using 'economy' sausages, but not here - even the bread for the toast...

Just spent five days at in the Monmouth apartment to get away for the half term. There are minor complaints like REALLY bad water pressure on the toilet , no freezer and you end up paying a fair bit on parking and looking for spaces...

Went for a cycle ride today, expecting to have breakfast from route 2 take away. Said no food as giving preference to people sitting in. Not a service for cyclists who have not booked and cannot secure bikes outside.

Cuando llegamos, Nive nos dio una cálida bienvenida. Nos alojamos en el apartamento Zephyr, que tenía todo lo necesario para nuestra estancia de 2 noches. La decoración es básica, sin embargo, está limpia, ordenada y muy cómoda. Los apartamentos no se ven mucho desde el exterior, pero están ubicados justo en el centro, por lo que son excelentes para visitar los pubs y las tiendas.Definitivamente regresaría de nuevo y recomiendo encarecidamente alojarse aquí. Super spot for informal/casual breakfast, brunch or lunch. More savoury options than sweet, with different size breakfasts and nice simple bacon butties through to avocado & eggs on toast or more varied lunch items. Young friendly crew and local/Exeter coffee roasted by Crankhouse.

Dropped in with friends for coffee stop on cycling route towards Exmouth. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and great coffee / cakes n amazing mince pies. Around us people were tucking into yummy breakfasts.

Habiendo reservado y pagado una estadía de 4 noches en Navidad, tuvimos que retirarnos porque me caí con un error. Sin embargo, la RUTA 2 nos dio 4 días GRATIS a mediados de febrero. Nuestro apartamento de 2 habitaciones en el piso de la calle 1 era espacioso, cómodo, limpio, tranquilo y equipado con todos los aparatos que uno pudiera pedir. El agua de la ducha siempre estaba caliente y la calefacción era más que adecuada.Mi esposa se había alojado allí antes y lo elegimos en cualquiera de los dos hoteles en Topsham debido a la atmósfera: comer allí es como cenar en un club relajado y fácil que sirve buena comida a precios razonables. Los lugareños, niños y perros entran y salen. Creo que es muy agradable porque todo el personal es amable y servicial.Íbamos a partir el domingo, pero ese era el día de Storm Caia, ¿así que nos quedamos una noche más? No hay problema; eso fue lo único que pagamos allí, aparte del desayuno y todas las comidas.¿La tormenta fue tan impresionante como la ruta 2? ¡Sé cuál prefiero! Definitivamente un ganador!

Route 2 is in an excellent location a stone’s throw from the estuary. The breakfast menu is fantastic and at a good price. There are also lunch items and lovely cakes as well as a range of coffees and teas. Very good welcome

Esto se está convirtiendo rápidamente en uno de mis lugares favoritos. El personal es amable y servicial. A menudo visito a mi perro de 4 meses y todos nos sentimos muy bienvenidos, a pesar de que a menudo ocupamos espacio con el cochecito. We just stopped here for lunch, meeting a friend who lives nearby on our way back from Cornwall. None of us knew the area, so this place was a real find! Delicious cooked breakfasts, great coffee and really friendly staff. The place was absolutely heaving (quite the compliment for a Monday before 12pm!!) and I can absolutely see why. Thanks for a delicious lunch, and to your very helpful waiting/counter staff who provided great service.

Eight of us for breakfast and the staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Food was tasty, various breakfast combos all of which were enjoyed. Scrambled egg and salmon was generous and very good. Food came out quickly and looked great. One of party was gluten free, and very excited to find out that pancake options can be done with gluten free flour - well done Route2, nice touch.Thoroughly recommend it and we will be going again.

We met up with an old friend for a coffee and recommended this place. Fab coffee and reasonable. Don't know what the food's like but will definitely be visiting here again. Great family atmosphere.

Two night stay early July in Zephyr apartment.Good value for money. This self catering apartment was bright,clean,airy and provided with all that is required to make a comfortable stay for a couple including towels and washing-up liquid.Well placed in Topsham next to the quay,shops and eating places with the added interest of boats on the river.On street parking and pay car parks close by with free Quay parking from 18.00 to 09.00. Staff friendly and informative.On returning home found mobile phone charger had been left behind.It only took a call for a member of staff to find it and return the item well packaged in the post for which I had to insist I paid for.Did not use the restaurant but the smell of food and appearance was very appealing.Have madeothers aware of Route2 and would happily use again.

We had a very nice breakfast, and ordered and paid for a second coffee each. 20 minutes later the plates were cleared and we reminded them about the coffee. We were told that they were busy (which they were) and other people still had to be served. Another 20 minutes, and a wait at the counter with a queue of people but nobody there. Not wanting to waste more time we left. It is unreasonable. They could have told us they couldn’t do coffee or it would be longer than 40 minutes when they took the money. Staff were just disinterested and unprofessional.

We were visiting the Antiques Centre on the quay. So for lunch we looked at the adjacent pub menu but it was too expensive for what we wanted i.e soup, sandwich and a cup of tea. We have eaten at the Estuary restaurant on the quay also but decided to find somewhere else. So just behind the quay is located the Route 2 Cafe. Far less formal and the staff were very friendly. So we had our sandwich and tea. The menu was quite extensive and pretty reasonably priced. We shall go there again. I award it four Trip Advisor bubbles.

Stayed at the Route2 apartments for a birthday get together with friends. What a find, great location in the middle of the village opposite a great pub and above the cafe serving excellent food. Cannot fault the quality of the accomodation, the location and the price. Will be booking again!

Recommended by passing cyclists - popular with cyclists & walkers. Town centre and near the quayside. Lovely soft leather sofas and a wonderful array of cakes.

I'm a local. Like other reviewers I thought I'd support our local business by nipping in for a bacon sandwich and a cup of coffee. I was disappointed. This has gone down hill. Food was pricey but meagre in size. Bacon sandwich was on one slice of bread....(This wouldn't happen in my house !) Table was greasy. I have to be honest and say staff were not welcoming, I did not feel comfortable and didn't linger. I did felt like an inconvenience, unfortunately. Apart from coming away hungry I think I also feel a bit unwell too. I don't recommend the experience, I'm afraid.

We passed several other eats places before deciding on Route 2. We had been before several years back, but this was a very different and poor experience. The service was abrupt and staff were clearly impacted on the rush/demand the bank holiday visitors were offering. The food was so bland, poorly presented and thrown onto the plate (and then the table) with no care or attention. This might sound harsh, but this place clearly promotes itself as more than a cafe, but had better experiences in a greasy spoon. It’s prices also suggest you are expecting more. It’s quite odd that a sandwich has left me feeling so nauseous. For coffee and cake most customers seemed content, but we were very letdown and disappointed.

The Route 2 Café is tucked away amongst the quaint and atmospheric riverside once thriving port that is Topsham on the River Exe. With its Anglo/Dutch architectural influence, it is a wonderful example of a bygone age preserved for posterity and fits in perfectly with its surroundings. It offers you a delicious slice of Devonshire fare, with Cream Teas a specialty - you can't do better than visit for a breather to rest tired feet; whilst taking in the charm that is East Devon

Haven't been to Route 2 in a while. What a change. So many delicious looking cakes.....

I'm a local and visited for the second time ever this afternoon - the service was very slow the first time round, but it was pouring with rain, I was starving and I thought I'd treat myself to having someone else make my lunch. This time the service was non-existent, and there was hardly anyone in there. It was unclear if there was table service, or if I could sit anywhere. Menu limited but reasonably priced. Ugly, slightly strange plasticky bench-seat-cover things on some of the window seats and I actually decided to cut my losses and leave. Even being acknowledged by any member of the staff on duty might have made me feel more welcome rather than a potential inconvenience, which is how I felt. It's a shame that the whole place is a bit run down (not in a good, homely way) and the staff don't seem to care. Even after I eventually had chosen to risk choosing my own seat and look again at the menu (including going up to close to the counter to read what was on the Specials board, no one attended to me. Oh and the table was sticky. Sad face.

Our favourite place for a snack in Topsham. Quirky, friendly. Savoury pancakes delicious and filling.

Visited here last October and we were very pleased. Since then, this place has gone downhill fast. The place appears grubby, as do the staff. The sofas look tired and are stood on by staff, (wearing shoes ! ) to change the menu. The food was extremely dry and tasteless. The staff do not smile and look disinterested, the tables were sticky and the toilets were not very clean. Sadly this café now resembles something you might find in a hostel. Not good, give it a miss and visit The café in the main high street.

Very nice selection of cakes, the coffee was tasty, and it's a super location. Not the cheapest place and the service was a little on the slow side, though that wouldn't put me off going back in the slightest.

Called in here on a Sunday with my gluten intolerant partner, we had an all day breakfast, with coffee and tea. ( my partners was adapted to exclude the gluten containing ingredients. ) The breakfast was nice and hot, very fresh with good quality ingredients. The service and friendliness of the staff was also very good. Sadly the only gluten free cake on offer was the usual chocolate brownie, which gets very boring for people with allergies. The prices are okay but on the more expensive side, but we do not mind paying a bit more when you get excellent food. We will be back as we moved into Exeter two weeks ago and are keen to keep in mind decent eateries.

Stopped here for a cup of tea here, found it very expensive and staff not particularly interested in serving us, noticed that two others in the place were overcharged on there items but this was put right. Small portions of ice cream.

Super Veggie Breakfast! Came here as nowhere else was open on a Bank Holiday. Perfect mid morning tea break.

Came here for coffee late afternoon, advertised as closing at 5pm. Their ice cream selection was reduced because “it was still frozen”. They would not serve coffee at 440pm because they had switched off the coffee machine. If you want repeat customers then you should be able to offer your products until close, I understand closing a kitchen down earlier for clearing up etc, but not to be able serve coffee or ice cream is ridiculous.

I visited today for just an ice cream- one scoop £2.50 in a tub- the smallest meanest portion I have ever had. Won’t go back there again mean lot.

This cafe has a lovely atmosphere inside and a good selection of different breakfasts. The food was made fresh to order so took a little longer to come but we didn't mind as it tasted so good. We even came back for a second visit before we left the area!

A good cup of coffee can make the difference in my day.. No coffee in the area beats the cappuccinos at Route 2! Rich & frothy :)

Really disppaointed to be told when we went in to a cafe that advertises being open until 5 pm that the kitchen closed for food at 3pm. If the kitchen closes at 3pm then be clear that is the case as staying open to sell ice cream 7ntil5 pm does not make it a cafe. Won’t be back.

For our two mornings in Topsham we had delicious breakfasts at this small cafe near the wharf in Topsham. It opens at 8am, unlike some of the other eateries which don't open until 9.30am and it is deservedly popular.

Stopped here for coffee, which was lovely. Cakes looked old & sad. Toilet was awful, dirty & a wet floor. Decided not to eat here.

Great stop off for brunch on the Exe cycle trail. We both had the smashed avo on toast with mushrooms, bacon and eggs and added black pudding. All cooked very well and presented beautifully and a nice cup of tea and black coffee. Only improvements could be proper black pepper at the table as a preference and the smoke alarm went off twice whilst we were there. But good atmosphere otherwise and lovely paintings on the walls.

Having read the more recent reviews we nearly didn’t choose this place for breakfast. We arrived at 9.30 when it was very quiet, by 10.10 it was getting busy. The staff were friendly, food was prompt and was really nice. We paid £40 for a family of 4, prices reflected the big portions which is fair enough. We’d go again!
