The Crown and Sceptre has just come under New Management. We live in the village and thought we would try it for lunch - there is a 2 for £12 lunch menu on, so four of us walked across and took a table. It was virtually empty ( four other people in the pub) and no one behind the bar at all.

I brought my family to Crown and Sceptre for a Sunday lunch without booking. There were four adults and three children in our party. We were seated all together very efficiently and had the choice of beef, lamb, Turkey or the most amazing Roast Pork which I had, the vegetables were fresh and cooked perfectly and the roast potatoes and home made Yorkshire puddings were stunning. For dessert I tried the home made apple and blackberry crumble with custard (a traditionalist at heart) which was simply divine, all in all it was the best meal I have had out ever. Well done to the staff at Crown and Sceptre and I will certainly be recommending you. After lunch we sat out in the beer garden and we each tried a different Ale that was available and let the children play in the well kept very safe beer garden on the swings and slide and enjoyed the sunshine. We introduced ourselves to the landlord Simon and praised him on such a fantastic meal. I am slightly baffled with the sharp cutting negative comment made by Tom C regarding the standard of food he received as we are now regulars for food and the standard of service we have received is first class every time and I and all my family understand that sometimes Ales are drunk which limits the choice especially over weekends. Tom C did you ever consult the landlord with your opinions or did you just decide to vindictively slate your local pub ? Cannot ever understand why locals do not support the heart of their village and community. It would appear that this is merely a personal grudge which is a shame as this is a very good pub. As I have eaten in many pubs and restaurants but the quality of service we have received every time we have visited has been above and beyond. Even the staff remember us by name now and we always have a very warm welcome. FANTASTIC SERVICE, VERY WELCOMING, OUTSTANDING FOOD AND AMAZING BEER GARDEN. Will highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As a local resident I have used this pub on countless occasions and always enjoyed the range of ales, the food and atmosphere. On my last visit with friends there was only one real ale on offer, my wife's lunch was so bad she had the cost refunded and two other meals were very poor. I will not be visiting this pub again when there are others close by.

With a lot of very good competition from other pubs in the area, the C&S has to keep on top of its game and it always seems to! The beer is top notch and the food is good standard pub fodder. Where the C&S excels is entertainment, where they really seem to know how to pick a decent band, the cosiness adds to the acoustics and if its music you like, you're almost guaranteed to have a great night out. They also seem to make a lot of effort to get people in on traditionally quiet nights of the week with various food and drink offers. The staff and landlord are exceptionally friendly and always accommodating. Clearly a landlord making an effort and, hopefully, paying dividends. Well worth a visit.

We had heard that the new owners had turned this pub around and so they have. When last visited back in 1995 (!) I can't remember being able to sit outside by a delightful stream...Anyway, last Tuesday 19th August 2014, we stopped by for lunch on the way back from Exeter to North Devon. We received a very friendly welcome, although they were having certain problems in the kitchen! However, if something had run out an offer of an adaption to the dish was made and the substitute was prepared and served with equal care and attention. I did not sample the wines but there is a good selection of beers including local brews. All food is freshly prepared and the home made crème brulee was the best we have ever tasted: and we have tasted a few!

My wife and I visited the pub after reading the menu on its website. What was on offer on the day could not have been further from that advertised. I had a burger ( hardly the high class chefy choice of dish that we were led to believe would be available ). The first attempt from the kitchen was too badly burned to eat and the second was swimming in grease. The chips were soggy and looked like they had been heated in a microwave. My wife's two courses were not much better, cold grease being the predominant taste and texture. On the plus side the staff were friendly although they did seem rather worn down by the sheer awfulness of the place. Having read other reviews I can only conclude that Devon diners are an unsophisticated bunch who have yet to leave the 70s.

Have reviewed this place before and revisited recently. The service is friendly and welcoming, you really get the feeling these people want you to have a good time rather than just want your money. We visited on a Sunday evening and both had the home made pie with vegetables. Unlike a lot of pubs home made here really does mean home made. None of the packaged microwaved rubbish but a really good quality meal at a reasonable price. This is one of the best pubs in the area, far better than the Beer Engine and is to be thoroughly recommended.

This is very obviously a great community pub for the locals. A warm welcome received but we felt a little out of place with people sat playing board games at their tables. However, we did move round to the restaurant which was better. Service a little lacking but the waitress was quite young. The menu choice was a bit dated and lacked any wow factor but the prices were average. My wife and I both ordered the steak served with chips, peas, tomato, onion rings and mushroom. If the food had of been served in 70's or 80's it would probably have been deemed as great food. By today's standard it was a good value plate of food, but cooked as if it had been made at home. There was nothing really wrong with it but nothing great about it. It lacked any real flavour and was a bit oily in places. For £9.95 though, quite good value. Not somewhere we would visit again.

This is a worthy pub to visit if you're staying at Newton St Cyres, as my wife and I were over the weekend of 12/13th July, or just passing through. A warm, friendly welcome by the landlord Simon and the charming young bar lady Sophie. The recommendation by my family was well justified. As CAMRA members, we wanted to try the range of real ales, so Simon conjured up 1/3 pint glasses and we went along the list of beers: Castle Gold, Wotter Shot and Summer Best. They were all very good, but the Wotter Shot got the best vote of us both at 8/10 and deserved a refill. The next night - Sunday - we stayed for dinner and were quite amazed at the fine menu as well as having the choice of Sunday roasts, all at very reasonable prices. The pub was alive and buzzing thanks to the World Cup Final and a visit by a happy band of German fans. The lamb roast was outstanding and the fish 'n' chips excellent. The crab and crayfish starter - only £4 something - was delicious. The beer perfect and the wine very good.We congratulate Simon, Sophie and the kitchen staff for turning The Crown & Sceptre around from failure to success over the last 5 years under Simon's tenure and making it a pub well worth a return visit to eat, drink and chat. There is no need to go anywhere else - not even Exeter or Crediton. Looking forward to our next visit.

Popped into the Crown & Sceptre for lunch recently and had a light lunch of sandwiches. These were advertised as using farmhouse bread. We chose this countryside pub for dinner on our Exeter trip because it looked very traditional and cosy, and it was the right choice. The decoration and the atmosphere was exactly what we expected, and the food homely and comforting. What I liked when we arrived was that the dinning area and the bar area was separated, so we could enjoy a nice, quiet meal while the blokes were enjoying their drinks and loud chatting on the bar side. A very welcoming way of having it organised. The restaurant itself is not very big, but comfortable. We didn't have to wait long at all for our food, and I loved my ribs, huge portion, I couldn't finish it. The potato wedges were superbly spiced as well, one of the best I've ever tasted, and I'm a low carb eater, but these ones I had to try.

I didn't realise when we walked in that this is a fish speciality pub/restaurant. I had taken my fish-loving friend in for a lunch in a quaint village pub, and also took in a postcard from the 1950s that had belonged to my mother, expecting to find someone who could tell us where in the village the view was of. Instead, bar manager Simon not only explained the view, but showed us other photos including one almost the same as mine, told us the history in detail of the village street from the 1930s to present, and all in all was a mine of fascinating information and history. Food service was good, and whilst the portion size was only medium, it was sufficient for lunch and gave us the opportunity to try brill, which is rarely on the menu of most restaurants. This pub is also dogfriendly, which is a must for me as my canine comes with me most places and I prefer to not have to leave her in the car every time. Being local, I was very impressed with my first visit to this pub and plan to call in again when in the village. If I have one small criticism of the meal, it is that we were not asked if we would like side portions of vegetables and the included vegetables were minimal, but to be fair I was so busy occupying Simon with questions on the photos and the village, and I did not think to ask what the fish dish came with. The fish was beautifully cooked and presented, and there was ample fish.

The landlord was absolutely brilliant; accommodating, consummately professional and extremely friendly. Nothing was too much trouble; this pub should be heaving! The only reason I can see why it isn't busy is probably the same reason why I'd not actually been in before; the exterior could do with some jazzing up.. There were at least 3 badly handwritten sandwich boards with various offers out the front which didn't look very professional. A real shame; don't judge a book by its cover! The first time we visited the Crown And Sceptre was in Easter 2007,when my eldest daughter was under two and youngest was not even born. Back then, the landlord was Richard, and I gave it glowing reviews, it is now run by Simon and his wife Madelaine, and it is even better than before.I cannot compliment this fantastic English village pub enough. Set in the picture postcard Devon village of Newton St Cyres, visually it is what you expect a village pub to be - rustic with a thatched roof. Inside, the welcome is as warm as toast. We ate there for all three of our first three nights in Exeter, and the food and hospitality to my wife, myself and two young daughters was everything that is great about England. I had the rump steak, with fresh chips, onion rings and trimmings. My wife had the gammon, and because there was nothing on the menu that my daughters liked, Simon offered to have their chef do them a fresh pizza, even though it was not even on the menu, that is what I call going the extra mile. The food was first class, and all of us had empty plates at the end of it. another night, I opted for one of their pies, and the steak pieces just melted in your mouth. They have an excellent choice of real ales, and I opted for Otter Bitter ( lovely, but not as good as Ottter Ale ). During our meal, Simon not only came out to enquire if the food was to our liking, but to have a friendly chat to us - typical of the friendliness of Devon people. Outside, they have a great beer garden and play area for kids, that my girls loved. I cannot recommend this fantastic English village pub enough, please visit it, you will not regret it. Ten out of ten.

This is our local pub and we visit regularly. Simon is a great host and his wife Madeleine whips up some great food in the kitchen. Brixham fish is a speciality. Watch out for special food and wine evenings. We went to the Asian night and it was great. The pub quiz is run on the first Tuesday of the month and you can get a good, cheap curry before it starts, but you're advised to get there early as it gets really full. We had to eat outside! We had a surprise birthday party at the pub in April 2013 and Simon and Madeleine couldn't have done more to make it go well. We were given the restaurant on a Saturday lunchtime, and the food was great and really good value. Even the cake was homemade and absolutely delicious. If you sit outside, cross over the bridge over the stream to a pleasant grassed area and sun yourself. The staff will bring food out to you while you watch the world go by.Try this pub, you won't be disappointed; just what you want from your local. For a snack try the homemade fish finger sandwiches!

We have visited this pub under previous owners and been disappointed. After hearing it was under new ownership we decided to give it another go. What an absolute delight. The staff were helpful and friendly and the food was absolutely great. We both had a starter and a main course and couldn't fault either. One of the best meals we have had in and around the Exeter area. If they maintain these exceptionally high standards we will be back regularly.

I am a chef and I recently moved to this area to find this pub had been taken over by new owners. I went in for a meal with some family and was completely blown away. The food is outstanding for a pub and te ale is superb. There are at least 3 specials on for mains with one usually and amazing fish or meat concoction. All homemade puddings and locally sourced ingredients, down to the dartmoor lamb that they butcher themselves. Amazing food, awesome drink and sweeeeet atmosphere. 10/10!!!

Rigtig god madoplevelse.

After a brilliant night with friends we went for kareoke to continue having fun. Unfortunately the bar man was so rude to me I had to leave when I asked if he could put a song on with his answer being it is my pub don’t tell me what to do. I went back to say to him you made me feel horrible when you spoke to me like that his answer was tough. He ensured my night ended on low I do not spend my money to be spoken to like that awful way for bar staff to speak to people obviously do not care about customers I will not return.

Went there for the first time and didn't know what to expect. Found a lovely bakery with fresh pastries and bread and can even see them being made. We had sausage roll, sourdough sandwich, flare whites and a cinnamon bun. Everything was amazing and highly recommend. Prices were good and good seating. Will be back

Had two of the bartender specials, Esteban’s recommendation was fantastic! Two of the best cocktails I’ve had in a while. Such a vibe!

Two nights spent in Topsham having dined in the Globe restaurant. The food was delicious, all home cooked and presented very well. Great portion sizes! All staff very very friendly and attentive. Great little bistro pub for the foodies!
