Harry's in Exeter

Situated slightly off the beaten track but well worth finding, very friendly meet and greet, comfortable inside without looking pretentious, menu as online plus a few specials, we ate mackerel pate, squid, beef bourguignon and breaded hake, all well presented, very tasty and good sized portions. It was a super many thanks, we will return

Thr 6/2/25 I had the French Onion soup for starters and it was tasty but a few too many onions. For the main course I had the Devon Crab linguini. The pasta seemed to be spaghetti and I could not find any chunks or even slightly smaller pieces of crab meat - very disappointing. However the dish was tasty enough. The service was efficient and we didn’t have to wait long for our meals. I should have mentioned my disappointment at the time but I was with a group of eight and didn’t want to spoil the ambience. Harry’s is quite expensive and could do better. I do not remember being asked by the waitress how our meals were.

The starters and mains were absolutely fantastic. We started with the Calamari and Prawn Cocktail dishes, both were fresh and light. Calamari was very tender and tasted fresh. We all then had the steaks, again was cooked to perfection, medium rare and just fell apart in your mouth. We visit M&C quite often, and thought they were very good, but Harry’s is a totally different class, blew M&C out of the water. If you love your food to a high standard, then this is your place. The night before we went to the Ivy, wish we had gone to Harry’s first, as the bill was less than the Ivy and the food once again so much better, would of attended both nights. Only down to see our son at Exeter uni, but know when we visit, we will book Harry’s every time. Thank you for the great food and drink!

Service was good. Vibe was nice. Seating was comfortable and the menu had a nice selection. The steak was really good but the sauce should have been on the side and not poured on the steak it was a bit much and took away from the taste of the meat also lacked any sear on it. They didn't ask how they would have liked their burgers to be cooked and they were well done and it was very dry and hard to eat. Chips and onion rings were really nice as was the Mac and cheese. The chicken dish was really nice but should have had extra sauce as it wasn't enough for the amount of chicken that was served along with the mashed potato.

Superb restaurant,a little bit pricey but you really get what you pay for.

Harry's is highly recommended. Ate a super tasty salad. I have never eaten such a special, vegetarian salad of winter vegetables and nuts before. A taste sensation. My partner had a beef fillet. Also very good. For desert I had pavlovas. Also great!

Honestly wow!!! My husband and I came for dinner 14/12. The staff were amazing, our server was India. She knew everything about the menu and was so lovely. It turns out Harry's is a family run restaurant and it shows. I really hope India's Mum see's this, her restaurant is amazing. After some discussion with India we ordered. The food did not disappoint. Any restaurant on a Saturday in December can be hit and miss but not here. We shared a bubbling cheese soufflé, a steak(cooked perfectly) and a crab linguine, followed by a shared cheeseboard. I really wish we lived nearer because we would definitely be back time and again, thank you very much.

From the moment we arrived, the welcoming and attentive staff set the tone for a memorable dining experience. The ambiance is a perfect blend of cozy and modern, a lively yet intimate atmosphere. I started with steak tartare, the beef was perfectly seasoned. For the main course, I chose the fresh tuna steak. It was perfectly seared on the outside while maintaining a delicate, melt-in-your-mouth interior, just as it should be. Dessert was the autumn Eton mess, a delightful finale. My second visit in as many weeks. Harry's is an absolute must-visit for anyone in Exeter.

Started with a cheese soufflé that was exquisite, before moving onto the most succulent steak I’ve ever experienced leaving me wanting another. But after the skillet cookie, I couldn’t handle another bite of anything 🙌🏼🤯😋🤤. Best meal I’ve ever had and I’m somehow still trying to get my family to leave the same boring toby carvery they have every time we are out 🫣

Wanted to write a review for Harry’s restaurant after having an outstanding private party for my husbands 40th birthday!! The private function room is hidden around the back, away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. The dark chic decor, and cosy ambience made it the perfect place to have an intimate meal. The correspondence from start to finish was amazing, and I was set up on an online booking system so my guests could order their own meal choices which I thought was so easy and took a-lot of the stress away from me. We had 20 guests sat on a long table with the birthday boy at the end. The 3 course set menu was £40 which I thought was fantastic. We had a private server all night who kept the wine flowing. Everyone was so impressed with the food!!! And the steak was top notch. I loved the fact we could have our own playlist on, and there were little gaps between the courses to let us mingle and chat. The staff were attentive and let us come earlier in the afternoon to set up and decorate with some balloons. Will most definitely recommend Harry’s to anyone wanting a private party, and will be back again soon. Thank you!!!

We had a lovely evening celebrating with work colleagues, there were lots of us but the food came out on time and was hot. The food was great and the service was also great.

Food was lovely but I genuinely believe that they tried to rip us off. I sent back a steak which was duly replaced without bother. Shared a bottle of wine with my wife, a dessert and a port so was quite merry by the end! The bill finally arrived featuring 2 additional deserts. For an establishment held in such a high esteem I would have thought wait staff would properly check bills. Sadly this was an awful end to an otherwise decent meal especially because we were scouting restaurants for our daughter's graduation.

Amazing food and staff. I got the roast cod, absolutely delicious. The mash especially. My boyfriend got the Rare Ribeye steak, which he also loved, very flavourful. Said it was one of the best steaks he’s had. Cocktails were great. One of the staff made me a drink, that was amazing (not on the menu). But the staff were so kind and helpful. Will definitely go again!

I have eaten here twice in the last month, once for a family birthday and once with friends for lunch. Excellent both times. Lovely building, cosy, traditional decor and ambience. Staff are friendly, attentive and helpful. But of course the food is what's all important. Good sized portions and excellent locally sourced produce. I've had the stack tartare, the fresh tuna steak (twice!), and tried two different desserts - treacle tart and the autumn (eton) mess. I can only praise it all. When you add on the side dishes and drinks, this is quite a pricey event. However, how nice to have such a lovely restaurant venue in Exeter for those special occasions.

A really lovely meal out for our anniversary. Ambience is lovely, and service was attentive but not overbearing. We had cheese souffle and steak tartare to start, both were really exceptional. Mains, we chose grilled tuna and grab linguine. The tuna was a really generous portion, cooked perfectly and accompanied by crunchy beans. The linguine was delicious, but could have benefited from fresh pasta. The cheese platter we had for dessert was plenty for two, and some of the most delectable grapes we have ever had! Great wine list, and very knowledgable and engaging staff.

Food was great as was the service. Good wine list and price was reasonable too.

I had my birthday celebration in the private function room and had an amazing time! The food was incredible, staff so friendly and attentive and the atmosphere in the room was lovely. Thank you to Amy who helped plan and organise the evening- she tailored every part of the evening to how I wanted it to be from music to drinks and everything was perfect. 100% recommend if you are looking for a venue for a special occasion dinner party or similar.

The staff are friendly and helpful. The vibe is so nice if you are coming with a friend or for a date. The food is absolutely delicious, had the calamari and cod. Didn’t try dessert but maybe next time.

Prices a little high but compared to ours in Italy, we know that everything is more expensive here. The dishes are delicious, from the simple tomato pasta (very good sauce and not overcooked pasta) to the flan, to the schnitzel sandwich, but divinely made.

We found this restaurant on our own and it was a little out of the way but it is well worth the walk. We had excellent service and an excellent meal. We enjoyed it so much we went back the next night as well and were not disappointed. This was a real find for us in Exeter and was one of the highlights of our visit.

Harry’s is the perfect date spot. My husband and I had a reservation for lunch today and loved our meals. I had the Devon crab linguine and my husband had the Venison burger that was on special and both were cooked beautifully. Our server was kind and attentive and the atmosphere is cozy and unpretentious while still feeling upscale, hitting that perfect balance of special and comfortable. The black and white gallery wall of old photos from around Exeter gives it a warm local feel as well. My favourite part of our meal was the dessert! The tiramisu and affogato were both delightful. I can see us returning for dates and special occasions again and again.

Really enjoyable experience. Food was fantastic and the steak tartare was one of the best I’ve ever had. Would go back again if ever in the area.

One of our favourite spots in Exeter. Most recent visit was to kick start my daughter's 18th birthday, and what a kick start it was. Fab food, delicious drinks, great room and ace team - what’s not to love!? For us, a special occasion place- but that might be because we push the boat out every time we go!! Thoroughly recommended.

Right from the moment you walk through the door until you pay the bill you are treated for a fantastic experience. Beautiful food, well presented with subtle flavours. Had a late booking at 2.45 pm on a Sunday, but there was never a feeling that one was being hurried. Quite expensive, but as they say: ‘You get what you pay for‘!

This place is quite nice. I went there for my birthday meal with my partner😊 we had steaks ,but first we had calamari for a starter. The service was very good. I really liked the inside of the place . They have very beautiful and original wall wine shelf. I loved it .

Harry’s is a gem of a restaurant within the city centre of Exeter. Interior design and atmosphere makes you feel at ease, whilst the service was friendly and attentive. My sister and I had 2 pork dishes from the Specials Menu. The slow cooked pork belly I had melts in your mouth, and has a great pork flavour as it’s seasoned perfectly. The jalapeño jelly adds a sharp and slightly spiced sweetness to the pork if you need it! Can’t fault the creamed corn, love the stuff. The T-Bone steak was very tender and cooked to perfection! The balance of fat and lean meat provides a very full and flavourful bite each time. The fries were tasty and light, which was superb as I thought potato would’ve been too rich. The slaw was a fresh little addition to the entirety of the dish. Highly recommend this place for anyone new to Exeter!

me and my boyfriend have a lovely date at harry’s a few weeks ago , lovely service food was amazing. we had 2 steaks one sirloin and one T-Bone everything was amazing except that we asked for medium rare on the T-Bone but basically received rare but it was a lovely place the atmosphere was amazing

Yet another absolutely superb meal with interesting tastes and showing the chef’s real flare for creating food that is a reason for eating out! Arancini balls with truffle, beef carpaccio, steaks, hake & green beans with a twist (almonds👏). Service with care & a smile too! Best food in Exeter! Harry’s has a relaxing atmosphere with great service. We both had a delicious meal and I ordered the crab tagliatelle as so many people had mentioned it on TripAdvisor and it was delicious! I don’t like too much chilli so the extra chilli oil was left out and it was perfect. We would definitely recommend!

I went to Harry’s with my friend and we both really enjoyed the whole experience. I cannot wait to return with my husband and try some other things from the excellent menu. My friend and I started with some cocktails which were expertly mixed. We had some excellent recommendations from the waiting staff. The food we had was delicious and well presented. I had the Crème Brûlée for dessert and I always think it is a good sign if that can be executed well. It did not disappoint. The restaurant atmosphere was perfect. Overall a perfect score for this restaurant.

Fantastic service from the hosts, The steak was one of the best steaks I have eaten. The only downside was it was a little bit loud with the crowds but not the fault of Harry's.

Friendly welcome but after that the service was incredibly slow and the food was disappointing - definitely gone downhill. Very noisy and expensive.

I arrived at Harry’s at 6:25 PM on a Wednesday, hoping to have dinner. The restaurant was about 80% empty, and there was no one seated outside. A friendly staff member greeted me and said she would look for a table for me, as I was dining alone. However, another staff member from the bar interrupted, stating that there were no tables available for a single diner and that everything was booked. When I questioned if it was possible that all the tables were reserved and mentioned that I would be quick, she insisted that everyone would be arriving in 15 minutes, by 6:45 PM. This seemed unlikely. I was not treated well and felt let down, especially since I had chosen this restaurant based on its high food ratings. This experience was disappointing.

We have been on a number of occasions & we travel from Bristol just to come to Harry’s for lunch. It is probably my favourite restaurant at the moment. I love everything about this place & I cannot recommend it enough. I’ll continue to make the trip to visit for the best lunch!

We celebrated graduation and had a fabulous night. Great ambience, superb food and always impressed with the service. Best steaks in Exeter. Can’t recommend enough!

Food was excellent and great value

We went to Harry’s on Tuesday 16 July for lunch following our daughter’s graduation. The decor and ambiance are lovely with subtle lighting. We had the most gorgeous waitress who we later found out to be the daughter of the owners. This was the key! The service, food and wine were all incredible quality and so beautifully presented. The wine list was very reasonable. We had the cheese soufflé which was just incredible! Melt in the mouth and so light followed by a chicken Caesar salad which was the absolute best I have e er tasted - soft chicken , bacon and anchovies in the most delicious dressing! The fillet steak was stunning. Creamed spinach and green beans alongside. The service was truly exceptional - I asked to try a cheaper wine and that was absolutely no problem at all and we then decided to opt for a bottle. There was no rush or cramming of courses and this was so welcome as it was a celebration. It happened also to be grad week when they could have packed it out over and over but we felt genuinely relaxed and able to sit until we were finished. Very good pricing for the most amazing food and so much better than the Ivy. Highly recommend. You will not be disappointed.

Great food, mostly friendly staff

Amazing experience we had the barbecue ribs and steak both were delicious cooked amazingly with plenty of sides. Really friendly wait staff, brilliantly attentive and all very well timed. Don’t forget to try the arancini!

Place was good & the food good, its just a bit over price for the place. Apart from that, everything excellent 👌.

Couldn't of picked a better venue for my sisters 70th birthday

Amy and the team were, once again, brilliant! The recommendations were spot on, and the food remarkable! There were 4 off us dining, and we all opted for various steak dishes, ALL of them were amazing!!

Attended for a booked leaving do, for a colleague, about 10 of us. Harry's had been provided with copies of each person's meal choice on Thursday for the meals on Friday, to be told the menu which we had downloaded to make our choices was an out of date menu, and their Internet site had not been updated yet, but they would do their best with what we had chosen, which they did. Service was exceptional, they dealt with our needs in a friendly and professional manner. The food was average for two of our colleagues, the ribeye steak was chewy and also the chicken was dry, the rest of my colleagues enjoyed their meals. Red wine is very very expensive about £29.00 a bottle.

Good food, well presented in good quantities. Service was excellent. Paying for sides is always an issue for me - why charge £3-4 for 6 potatoes?

Evening dinner taken us to Harry’s restaurant after reading reviews online. A late dinner for us table booked at 9pm, we arrived 10minutes early and we were accommodated without fuss! Big plus point! Very nice decor and restaurant was spacey yet felt quite warm and inviting. Staff were excellent with us. Ordered starters of arancini and dusted calamari, the arancini was served with a truffle mayo and dusting of Parmesan cheese, these were delicious creamy, crunchy, cheesey, freshly made and you could tell. The rice was not dry and fillings kept within the arancini, I really enjoyed them! Great light bite! The calamari there was no lack of it! Plenty of the plate for 2 to share, and nice touch of serving the squid heads also not just the body! I rate that use it all! The tentacles always taste great! Calamari was lightly battered crispy but not overpowering the actually flavour of the squid. I ordered a rump steak as a main and let’s start with best bit the meat!! - they source locally provided meat and say it’s farm to fork and it shows, I ordered my rump medium it arrived with a nice char across the beef and fats rendered down nicely that is how you do it! Sliced into beef and it melted like butter it was so smooth and delicate if you closed your eyes that could have been a filet steak! Seasoned well and good size steak, I was impressed I would say it wasn’t medium, more of a rare steak and could have been rested a touch longer as there was blood juices on my plate, but I’m ok with that. The fries dint sadly hit the same they crunchy outside but not a soft fluffy inner and no seasoning but fries are fries and when dipped in a classic béarnaise sauce you’re not complaining! That sauce was so fresh buttery, missed that acidity from vinegar but it was still very creamy and nice! I personally had no room for dessert but someone tipped them off it was my birthday and they give me a FOC warm brownie with creme and that went down lovely! In general I liked this place it had a bit of everything, not a huge menu but a solid menu, which we all know means the dishes have a higher standard! If you’re looking for a classy lunch or dinner get youreself down here you would be disappointed imo. Side note - my partner had the Harry’s classic beef burger, and it dint quite live up to the steak dish, bun was over cooked and patty lacked seasoning and was dry. The dish became hard to eat and resulted to knife and fork for a burger!! But saved it with a creme brûlée, that was amazing and put smile on her face! Overall rating for Harry’s - 8.5/10 solid score, some great food, clearly care about produce and what they serve and it shows! Some really good bits to those dishes and certainly nothing bad.

My son loved his huge TBone. He couldn’t finish it and took some home in a doggy box. Would’ve preferred the gremolata on the side of my tuna, as tuna taste was smothered for me. Similarly I would’ve preferred my green salad W no dressing, the vinegrette was very strong and overpowered the salad. Less would’ve been more for me. Note to self... remember to ask for sauce/dressing on the side :). The decor and staff were lovely. Felt like a nice treat.

First visit to Harry's Restaurant. Ist class food and service. We tried the calamari and smoke Mackrell pate for starters followed by rump steak and tuna steak mains. Cooked to perfection. Thank you Harry's for making our visit so enjoyable.

Real Buzz of an atmosphere. Friendly and attentive staff. Incredibly delicious food. Had calamari for starters, Fillet Steak for mains with Mac n Cheese on side. The suggested Malbec wine was so smooth and perfectly accompanied the meal. Will certainly be coming back

Such a shame to write such a report after waiting so long for the booking. In short, a £32 fillet steak has to be spot on, my wife’s was but you could immediately see that mine wasn’t. End piece, big piece of inedible gristle inside it and it was the main event for me! Then, a vanilla and white chocky bread and butter pudding…..yum…except there was neither any taste of vanilla nor white chocky. Just a (nicely textured) plain lump of B&B pud wallowing in poured on double cream. Couldn’t even find any sultanas! It’s way way way too expensive for the quality of food. At these prices, EVERYTHING needs to be absolutely spot on and leave you saying WOW in every course.

They don’t have parking. Very nice and kind stuff. Clean place., Very tasty burger. We really enjoyed the lunch Thank you. 🤩

Without doubt this is the best restaurant we have been to in Exeter. All the staff are friendly and professional from the moment you enter Harry’s until you leave. However, the stars of the show are the amazing cocktails and the delicious food. Absolutely exceptional!

Harry's never disappoints. We really enjoyed our dinner here, ambiance is great, seating is nice, staff is lovely. Wine and food were both good. We really enjoyed the sourdough bread and calamari as a starter! Prices aren't cheap but definitely appropriate for the quality. Also big plus for the quality, we loved seeing that things were locally sourced from Darts Farm. Can't wait to go back for another occasion.

Having owned the iconic premises now Harry's Restaurant this was for me a nostalgic occasion. Trust to tell, it would be difficult to find even a smidgen of criticism for Harrys. It is utterly brilliant. The staff are well trained, young, and enthusiastic, but even they are surpassed by the sheer brilliance of the kitchen. My scallops were glorious, fat and rich and followed by Cod so perfectly cooked and presented that Michelin should be falling over themselves to give this place a very high star rating. Needless to say the wines live up to the high standard to the whole presentation. Of the very many restaurants I have dined in over recent itimes this rates as the very best. This is an iconic restaurant for a reason, it’s family run and they understand the value of customer experience. One of my regrets is that I don’t eat here more often ( it’s always full) and in future I aim to rectify that. A delightful evening and we were looked after by Chloe who was charm personified.
