What a fabulous place this is. Accomodated us (a party of 10)with no problems. As it was a busy Mothering Sunday, Staff were very friendly and attentive. Nothing was a problem. Service was excellent!

I had the Rose Tree burger, bread bun dry, burger,chicken and bacon all over cooked and very dry. I did mention this and was offered a free sweet but refused it, I was there 2 weeks previous and it was lovely, different chef maybe? Husband had fish and chips which he enjoyed.

Food was lovely. Had a special off the board which contained pork & leek sausages, pork belly, Yorkshire puddings, black pudding, mash, red onion gravy 😋

Great service and decent pub grub. Will be back for sure.

5 stars across food, service and atmosphere, but a total rating of 4⭐️? Go figure OK so the food was lovely. Daughter had lasagne which was obviously scratch made. No frozen rectangular dish here, absolutely delicious. I had the steak ale pie, again scratch made. Beautiful pieces of meat, pastry just right, the ale taste coming out of the pie was awesome. Amazing. Decent prices, lovely pub. However. Dropping a star for...... The chips. Dropping a star for the chips? Absolutely I am. Because hopefully the chef, or the owners are good enough to receive a lill criticism and ask the question. Why has this customer dropped a point for our chips. Let's cook up some chips and see what's what. I've no doubt I'll be back in at some point in the future. Hopefully ticking the box that's got the 5th star in it

Called in by off chance for lunch. Couldn't fault the food, staff and their service. Will definitely be returning.

What's not to love, this classic pub delivers restaurant quality food and food beer. Warm friendly atmosphere, dogs get spoiled, cool staff, cannot recommend it enough 👍

Went for the two meals for £18.95. Both were inedible. Complete waste of money.

Had a Christmas doo there was 29 of us and the food and service was spot on. Will be back.

Great country pub with a decent sized car park and close to the centre of Durham. Food was decent, most of the group were happy. Chilli con carne with rice needs some work though, it was a let down and the lemon meringue pie and salted caramel cheesecake weren't great. The room to the right of the bar is a bit squashed and has quite a strong dog smell. Probably not noticeable if you're dog people though and it is a walking pub so not rating down for that. Staff were lovely, really attentive. There's a cool collection of old mobile phones adorning the edge of the room which is something interesting to see.

Stopped in for lunch on a walk along the river. We were actually heading for another pub nearby based on a friend's recommendation, but it was closed so we came here instead. And luckily we did - the food was amazing! Everything was freshly prepared, good value and delicious. Will definitely head back here on our next walk!

The food is excellent, Very tasty & well presented with good portions. there is an excelent range of choice on the menu. Nothing is a trouble to the staff who are very friendly & helpful. There is also a good range of beers at the bar & pricing for food & drinks is good value. Highly recomended.

Dog Friendly. good quality food, northern portions 🤣. A good wide range of menu options, a few specials, frankly was spoilt for choice. Service was friendly and not in your face which was perfect when catching up with family and friends. was quiet when we were in and not too busy (a thursday at 6.30pm).

Sunday lunch was really tasty and hot; well above average. I would have chosen lamb but as it wasn't on the menu had beef which was good. Really delicious roast potatoes and parsnips. We would recommend Sunday lunch here.

Passing by and popped in on off chance , got the last table , service was fantastic , great waitress , sunday dinner was amazing , parsnips and roasties best ive ever had , fantastic price , cant recommend highly enough

This is a lovely, small, and dog friendly pub in a beautiful part of Durham next to the river. The menu is fairly typical of most pubs and is well cooked and well presented. The fact that it also has a menu for dogs makes it stand out from the rest. However, we didn't find out about that until we were about to leave, which was a shame. My pooch would have loved the chicken breast. Unfortunately, she doesn't doesn't tolerate gluten well, so no sausages for her. Never mind, we will know for next time.

An excellent steak-and-ale pie at lunchtime in the dining room.

What can I say what a lovely dog friendly pub. If you want to eat in a pub where your dogs are made to feel as welcome as we were. Went for my sons birthday a party of 7 with 2 dogs. Booked the night before. Excellent table service which is a rarity these days. Food was lovely, drinks as you want them staff very attentive. Great find and will be back keep up the good work.

Honestly blown away with service and food. Chips were lush, im sure they were handcut. All our meals fishnchips/scampi+chips/classic burger meal were amazing. Thankyou Rose Tree for looking after us.

Quaint little pub we visited for Sunday dinner. The food was very tasty. Only criticism was it could have been hotter.. Still enjoyed it, though.

So enjoyed lunch today in this proper ‘pub’. Good food, reasonably priced & nice service with kindness for my poorly but recuperating friend. Liver & Onions not often seen these days & my personal fave! VERY pooch friendly but separate restaurant if you’re dog-less!!!

For £12.45 I suppose I should blame myself, but there was always a chance this would be a hidden gem… Not to be. The service was pleasant and friendly, the surroundings are nice enough, but the food was atrocious. Frozen Farmfoods chicken, boiled into a white fibrous paste. ‘Roast’ potatoes, deep fried within an inch of their lives. A SLICE of stuffing, again fried until oily. Sad and tired looking vegetables, long past their best. Mash potato reminiscent of care home leftovers. A Yorkshire pudding, a mystifying mixture of both cremated and almost raw. We’ve been for drinks before a walk into Durham several times, and will probably continue to do so, but we’ll never again dare to pick up a menu - at least not while the cook (‘chef’ would be laughably generous) insists on playing practical jokes with his food.

This pub is really nice with a great atmosphere. You can always get a great pint from here. The food is nice also. I would recommend giving the Rose Tree Inn a visit if you are in the area.

Had a family Sunday dinner here today and it was OK. I opted for the Mince and Dumplings. Was very disappointed. Dumpling (singular) was rubbery and very small. I think it had been fried in advance and by the time it was served it was not good.

We are regular visitors to the Rose Tree eating here at least twice a month but mainly for Sunday lunch which I would highly recommend. Today we visited for a late lunch and we both decided on the cod and chips but my fish was a thin piece of cod that was over cooked making the fish very chewy. At £50 for 2 lots of fish and chips and 2 chardonnays, it was very poor value for money. In future we will stick to Sunday lunch. Very disappointing, should have had a burger. I was asked if the food was ok and they offered a new piece of fish but we were half way through our meal. My wife’s was ok but her piece of fish was twice the thickness and therefore didn’t get overcooked.

Lucky they could squeeze 2 in for Sunday lunch without a booking. The lunch was excellent and service was very good. Lovely ambiance so can recommend.

This was the first time back to this place in years I'm not giving it a bad review but I will not be returning. The food was very nice it had no atmosphere and lastly I have a allergy to everything in the allium family plus garlic and celery, when I asked what I could eat on the menu the reply from the chef was I can do you a salad. I didn't get a choice.

Great meals and very attentive staff.

We often pop to the beer garden for drinks with friends and the dogs but have never eaten here before. The whole experience tonight was amazing from the friendliness of the staff to the quality of the food. There were 6 of us for a birthday celebration, the menu has something for everyone and the portion sizes are well sized. The food came in good time and was piping hot, our waitress couldn’t do enough to make our visit enjoyable and they even accommodated a special request on the desert menu! Highly recommend.

I had a lovely meal in the Rose Tree today . The food was superb and I even had room for a home-made cheesecake. Service was exceptional.

The food was amazing. The mixed grill was beautiful. I asked for medium rare and the steak was more medium but still delicious. The other meats were perfectly cooked and the chips were amazing. The burger was also very tasty and juicy. Really wanted a dessert but we were too full! It is a little pricey but well worth it!

Early evening on a Wednesday so place was quiet. Food was excellent. Prices were competitive for a pint of staropramen as was the food. Excellent service by a young lady was chatty but not overbearing.

We were out for a walk and went into the outdoor area for a pint. Great crowd inside and outside having meals so says a lot about the food will try the next time I am in Shincliffe

Dog friendly with the dogs having their own little menu my two were really happy. The liver had leeks red and white onions and black pudding in the gravy and there was loads of it as well, creamy mash to go with it. Lovely staff it was a very busy Friday afternoon when we went food came out at a reasonable time very tasty. Too much food for me so dogs enjoyed a bit liver as well.

We visited the Rose Tree inn for drinks and lunch after a riverside walk. Two of us had the bacon cheese burger with chips and coleslaw and we were very very disappointed!! It was a double burger and they were really tough!! I think they were factory made burgers, nothing like a homemade burger. We definitely will not be having the burgers again!!

Stopped there while out on my bike, fancied a cold drink and a sandwich, had a shandy which was £4:90, didn't get sandwich cheapest on menu was £10:25 for fishfinger Sandwich, place is nice but way too expensive.

Had sunday roast here. June 11 2023. Really tasty and brilliant service. Inexpensive too.

For the severe lack of vegan options, this has to be 1 star. We need to be moving to a situation where all items on the menu in all restaurants are plant-based/vegan, so the effort of this pub is unfortunately woeful, albeit in a pleasant location with good potential.

Another visit to the Pear tree a year on from our last visit and still an excellent experience with friendly welcome and a tremendous Sunday dinner with doggy menu so all was catered for We’ll be having a return visit and would recommend to anyone visiting this area

Food lovely if a little expensive but you pay for quality

Got a table no problem, the staff were lovely. Food is fresh and good quality. If I could give any advice, I’d say skip the starter and just go for a main because the portions are super generous!

Really enjoyed our visit to the Rose Tree Inn. We were welcomed really warmly as we entered the building and taken to the table of our choice next to the window. The service throughout was friendly, and it only took about 10 minutes for our meals to arrive after we had ordered. We both had the steak and onion with melted cheese in a caibatta ( which was probably the nicest one I have had, and the cheese was melted into the gravy).

Had a lovely meal here with the family this evening. Cosy pub, friendly staff and the food was delicious. The sausages and mash was not only tasty but a generous portion that left no room for dessert! The kids meals were also a good size. The batter on the fish fingers was light and crisp. Would definitely come again

Food was very homely. Good varied menu. Some homely dishes such as mince and dumplings and liver and onions but the wine was appalling. Need to improve the wine to complement the food.

Myself had roast beef Sunday lunch my wife had mince and dumplings both very nice gravy was lovely, nice friendly atmosphere lots of people were eating so speaks for its self. We will return.

Used this little pub for lunch before a riverside walk into Durham. Good ales, good pub-grub. Attentive staff and pleasant atmosphere. Plenty of parking.

Love this place, food is excellent, Sunday lunches especially, but also weekdays. Service is very good, staff are always welcoming and friendly and dogs are welcome in the bar..

This a a very friendly pub, with excellent food and drink in a nice location next to the River Wear. We were a party of four, with 2 dogs. One of our party is disabled, so we were able to use a convenient disabled parking space, and make our way into the pub using the ramps for the wheelchair. It is very dog friendly and even includes a doggy menu, although we did not take advantage of this. The food and service was excellent, and the pub also boasts a good selection of ales. The portion sizes were very generous and we were able to get a doggy bag to take the remaining portions back home with us. It's nice to enjoy such a nice establishment like this.

We try and visit the Rose tree when we visit our son and daughter in law either for lunch or dinner. We went on a Friday evening and ate in the bar as we have our sons dog with us. We didn't order starters as we usually find we fill up on them and then we can't finish our main meal. We had the 12oz steak, beef fajitas, Penang chicken curry and gammon and egg. All of the meals were absolutely delicious and it was clean plates all round. The thing we all love is that the chips are homemade, not frozen. I have said before that we have eaten in a lot of places in Durham, some very expensive one's and the Rose tree takes a lot of beating for quality of food and value. Staff are friendly and the service is great. We are not locals but have always been made very welcome.

Always good food and good service

My husband and I went for an evening meal on New years Eve. I ordered the 12oz rump steak with chips and mushrooms/red onion. The chips were burnt and I was told they weren't and it was because of the high sugar content!! The steak was like rubber and possibly the worst I have ever had. My husband had peppered chicken which was pretty bland however the vegetables were eadable. We got a discount of £7.24 off our bill ! If the chef had been bothered he would of come to speak to us. We will definitely not be returning anytime soon . What a very disappointing night and went we home hungry !

Ordered peppered chicken with potatoes and veg. Only decent thing about the meal was the veg. Peppered sauce very runny chicken was like rubber. Very disappointing as have been a couple times over past couple years but won't be going back as wifes meal of stake and chips was also terrible. Wouldn't recommend to anyone..

Table booked for 4 friends for our Christmas get together. We had pre ordered our food so we're shown to our table drinks bought and asked if we were ready to have our meals served. 2 beef 1 turkey and 1 fish dish. Beautifully presented but more importantly tasted good. I don't normally rave about vegetables but I have never had such a tasty parsnip!! Other veg cooked perfectly. After our first course we were asked would we like to wait a while before our dessert. Sticky toffee pudding was amazing. Thank you to the pleasant staff. Great dining experience.

Went in today for a meal for my husbands birthday, the staff are so friendly and lovely to talk too. Our dog blu was so welcomed and loved his doggie meal. Our food was absolutely amazing and will definitely be coming again on our own and with family and friends. Thank you to you all

We went here for a big Christmas dinner with 16 of us. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. The food was good quality, good value for money and delicious. We had a lovely evening!

I organised for my friends and I to have our annual Christmas dinner here. We were very impressed by the level of service and how nicely they had decorated the pub. The food was amazing, especially the sticky toffee pudding. We will definitely be returning. Thank you so much for a really lovely evening.
