It started well with a good selection on the menu. When we came to order our breakfast sandwiches my friend asked how much it would be to add an egg to her bacon sandwich, at which point the waitress advised that the prices on the menu had increased so weren't correct & could only say they had gone up by about 50p. On asking for a sparkling water she advised that had also gone up by 20p maybe 30p, these increases were due to the cost of living increase. When we questioned why the menus hadn't been updated she advised there were new owners & it hadn't been done yet but that there was a sign on the wall inside the shop advising of the price increase, we were sat outside but to be honest anyone entering the shop wouldn't have seen it as it would have been behind them. She then brought out the A4 sign. She also tried to find an updated menu which she couldn't find. Firstly I am sure this must be illegal to advertise one price & charge another & secondly a hand written note could have been added to the menu or a copy of the price increase attached to the menu which everyone would have seen. Maybe the new owners should hold fire on the price increase until new menus are available as it may save their reputation. The breakfast sandwiches were very tasty, however the 'glass' that accompanied the sparkling water was in fact a jar with a thread for a screw top. Some might call it funky but not to everyone's taste. Needless to say it wasn't used. There are standards which have to be met & the clear advertising of correct pricing is one of them. We are all effected by the cost of living crisis & on occasions when we do our bit to support local businesses we might be watching the pennies too.

First time eating at this cafe and I have to say the breakfast I ordered was very good. I have had lots of breakfast's in many cafe's and this rated up there with the best. Inside the cafe is very compact and our table was stuck right in a corner so perhaps not the best spot. The lady who took our order was very friendly and polite. We had a fairly lengthy wait for the food but as we weren't in a hurry it didn't matter. My friend and I both ordered a Full English breakfast. 2 very nicely cooked eggs, two thick bacon slices, a home made cheesy hash brown. 1 good quality sausage, a pot of beans. The only disappointment was the advertised grilled tomatoes turned out to be tinned chopped ones . We also had a slice of toast included. The price of £6.80 each was we thought very reasonable. Not sure how much the cups of tea were but the total bill came to £19.00. All in all we enjoyed our experience here and would return when in the area.

I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk and when I got it I questioned whether it was; my friend ordered a latte and hers was frothier than mine. I explained that cappuccinos are usually a lot frothier and the waitress offered to add more froth ... her excuse was that the oat milk the boss buys doesn't froth well! Evidently he needs to purchase more appropriate ingredients. When it was returned, there was a bit more froth but it was ultimately still a milky coffee (not even a latte!) And had been spilled all over the saucer. I also ordered some toast with jam; on the menu it was £2.50. It also didn't mention butter. The toast arrived already buttered; luckily I'm lactose intolerant not allergic but certainly not as advertised. Then I go to pay the bill and I've been charged £4 for the toast! When questioned, the waitress just turned around and asked her boss to speak to me and he said they couldn't keep changing the menu with all the inflations. I stated that we should have been informed or at least a sign, at which point he pointed out an A4 piece of paper stuck on the wall inside with small print writing on. I'm not sure it would have been obvious even if we had sat inside, but we were sat outside so we definitely didn't see it! There was no apology given, and he repeatedly referred to me as "lovely" clearly in a condescending attempt to placate me. He then passed me off again to the waitress who charged me. I'm not one for making a scene, particularly in such a small space, and I wholeheartedly support local businesses but there's a line and they've crossed it. My friend enjoyed her latte and cake, so perhaps it is only the dietary restrictions and prices that are issues but I dont find it acceptable. In fact, the lack of clarity is quite possibly illegal. I shan't be returning.

Had to pop into town on Thursday (20/10/22) for a bit of shopping and has was still in town coming up to 3pm decided to have a bite to eat while waiting for my daughter to finish school. Right from the minute I picked up the menu I was made to feel welcome. The place was busy and the waitress was rushed but she still had time to have a joke and chat with the customers and made everyone feel very welcome. The food was simple but very well cooked. I had the veggie breakfast with hot chocolate and cream. It was well cooked and tasted delicious. While waiting for my food I was able to have a nice chat with the gentleman at the next table. I will definitely be going back as want to try their cakes as they did look yummy. This is how a place should be run even when busy and rush of your feet nothing is too much bother for the customer.

My wife and I had early breakfasts at Rose Budson Wednesday 14.09.22 - after an early start from home in Northants. We had seen very good recommendations on TripAdvisor - and our expectations were VERY well met! The welcome we received was warm and sincere. It took us no time at all both to opt for the "full English traditional" breakfast and 2 x coffees. The breakfasts were excellent: lovely sausages, great bacon, 2 x fried eggs, baked beans, cheese topped hash browns and granary toast - delicious! The fresh coffees were excellent, too :-) ! We were also very impressed by how our "host" [Terry] really looked after the couple on the table next to us, the lady of whom was already 7 months pregnant. Nothing was too much trouble as she was enabled to select anything she wanted individually.... and Terry even checked how well cooked she'd like the scrambled eggs.. ... such a really personal service! Overall, my wife and I really enjoyed our experience right from first saying "Hello". It was like popping into a friend's house! Our breakfasts were excellent, the value for money was very good indeed.... and I can't wait for my next work visit to Hitchin.... no guesses as to where we'll be headed! Thanks very much Terry (.... and Alison and I hope that the unfortunate burn on your hand recovers very quickly). We are both very happy customers.

I rarely get to visit my family's home town of Hitchin, but when I do a visit to Rose Buds is a must. It is not just about the quality of service and food, which is always first rate, it is the immediate feeling of being welcomed that only the independents can genuinely offer. Sitting in a old world arcade it makes a change to sit and relax away from the bustle of everyday life.

I am shocked to see the other reviews as we had a horrendous experience here. 1. Service - Decent service. The lady serving us was nice, nothing of her fault. 9 out of 10 2. Waiting time - because they had 6 people behind the counter and the place is small, we waited way too long for a simple breakfast. 3 out of 10 3. Food quality - bad. Very bad food quality. Some items came out cold. I don’t enjoy saying this but most of the items seem to come from a cheap supermarket pack on sale. The tea is advertised as loose leaf tea, wherein in reality, they use teabags. The bacon and the sausages were not enjoyable whatsoever. The beans were cold and they taste like cheap canned beans. The only decent and enjoyable it seems to have been the halloumi. 2 out of 10 4. Ambiance - we’ve been upstairs. There are 3 tables squeezed between 2 fridges and a loo dor. I get that they want to be eclectic or whatnot. But that place is not enjoyable, especially when people are in and out of the toilet right next to your table. There are so many things and stuff squeezed in there, both upstairs and downstairs, that is really a true fire hazard. 1 out of 10 5. Cleanliness - dirty! All I can say is the place is not clean. The plate was dirty. The coffee mug was dirty. There’s nothing I can say. They need a good scrub. 2 out of 10 6. Price - cheap. This place is truly a definition of “you get what you pay for”. Overall experience. This is not a personal review and I truly hope that the owners will learn from this. Is a shame that the place is run as it is because the location is great and it could be a nice quirky cafe.

We stopped in Hitchin for lunch on a long car journey. We tried Rose Buds because of its high TA rating. Big mistake unfortunately. 3 out of the 4 things we ordered were completely different to description on menu (eggs fried not scrambled, sausages when we asked for bacon etc) The worst being a combo of cheese toastie, with sweet onion chutney a bad fried egg plonked on top and a spoon full of mustard on the side! I actually ordered the French toastie (ham & mustard) but figured they made me the wrong one and stuck the mustard on when they realised. All the food & drinks were well below average standard (instant coffee, cheap bread etc) and we really regret stopping here instead of some of the other lovely looking places in the village. The owner did send me another toastie even though I insisted I did not want one because I had eaten mine. And did discount our meal slightly. However instead of just apologising for the mistakes he blamed the poor boy taking the order, poor show.

My favourite cafe when shopping in Hitchin. The staff are really friendly and that helps to generate a good atmosphere. The home cooked food is fresh, beautifully prepared and the options cover all tastes. Lunches are especially good and it’s a good tip to get there early as there’s a limited amount of seating inside and it has become a popular destination for both visitors and those who work in town. When the weather is friendly, there’s also seating outside, in the arcade.

Just popped in here for a quick lunch, it’s quite a big airy place on a very busy road. But it’s obviously popular with the locals as we had the last available table. There’s a small area for children with a few toys to keep them occupied.we both ordered a chibutta roll warmed up, and 2 coffees. We waited a while, then a young man came to our table to say they’d run out of sausages, so my husband had a bacon one. When they came they were well presented and warm. All served on a mixture of China (different). Reasonably priced.

I had their homemade Coronation Chicken sandwich which was fantastic (just a little kick, really really nice) a small orange chocolate bundt cake and a nice strong cup of tea. Everything is served on nice bone china too. Wasn't too expensive either - sandwich and a cup of tea will set you back about £6. The staff seemed very stressed and one lady in particular was quite rude to a table next to us who asked for crisps with her sandwich which the menu said it should come with! Visiting family nearby and decided to have breakfast in Hitchin. Found Rose Buds and was not disappointed. Lovely staff. Tea & coffee served with a heart shaped biscuit while deciding on what breakfast to have. It was our Anniversary so the biscuit seemed perfect. Breakfast was great. Sausage and bacon so tasty. All the food looked lovely. If you're in Hitchin you've got to visit Rose Buds. Can't wait for our next visit.

4 of us visited the new rose bud cafe that has recently opened in Shefford, we all ordered the drake breakfast which was 6.90, when it was brought out to us firstly it was cold and secondly they messed up on one of the orders so We had to wait for them to sort this which made the breakfast stone cold!! The staff where not very welcoming and friendly and seemed they didn't no what they where doing. We had to wait a while for someone to come over to take our order which wasn't a good start. They also let dogs come in the cafe which I think is bad, especially when they serve food!! We was really disappointed because we had been looking forward for it open and was hoping to make it a weekly visit but this definitely won't be the case.

High expectations due to reviews on here, but underwhelmed. Very cramped and dangerous stairs. Quite honestly I'd go to one of the other cafes nearby again.

We visited this tea room for the first time and were very impressed. Delicious sandwiches, freshly made including the egg mayo. Fabulous coleslaw. And very friendly people. Highly recommended.

Situated in The Arcade and despite the snugness of the interior there are several tables outside under cover which are ideal unless it is bitterly cold. I have used the cafe on various occasions over the years and have always received efficient and polite service. I wouldn't say the portions are huge but that suits me fine as I would much rather have quality over quantity. This is not to say they are small plates but the breakfast consists of a good variety of items nicely cooked and not just filled with beans or chips. Definitely one of my cafes of choice in Hitchin.

Come here with my 4 year old. Always a warm welcome upon entering no matter how busy they are. Great selection of vegetarian options and a decent children's menu. Can't wait to come back!

Been here several times and never been disappointed. By far one of the best places to eat in hitchin. Reasonable prices and fresh quality food made to order. Try it for yourselves.

My first morning in the UK called for a good English breakfast - bacon sandwiches and a strong cup of tea in China cups! Just the job!!

Found this place by chance and what a fantastic find. Not large but just so good. A good menu but i would recommend the breakfast sandwiches. My partner had a bacon sandwich and i had the breakfast triple decker. Both were made fresh and we had an excellent cup of tea to wash it down.Staff were really nice - friendly and happy to help. Would nost definitely recommend this place.

Went here with my friend for lunch last weekend for the first time. What a great find! We sat upstairs and the decor inside was vintage mismatch and cosy. We were pleasantly surprised at the low prices on the menu and the food was really tasty too! Didn't try the cakes but they looked delicious, go and visit if you can.

I'm vegetarian. And walk past this place very often. There's a strong smell of bacon from outside as you walk by. My friend suggested we shared lunch there and we went upstairs. It was BRILLIANT!! Super food, great veggie options I had the most delicious home made soup. Massive hot pot of tea too. I'm coming back the rest of the menu and cakes looked fab. Thank you fir such a friendly welcome.

A very welcoming experience thanks to the excellent heritage centre guides who knew their stuff and pointed us in the right direction. The Centre is a must visit not just for aged train spotters but for every one. The line has a new future with East West Rail which needs all our support to get locals back on trains. Great coffee and cake made the day.

I stopped in here on the way home, with my daughter and two friends and we felt welcomed immediately… The facilities were clean and checked regularly… The service was quick and we were greeted with a friendly smile. The atmosphere was welcoming and accommodating to someone with a young child. The food was lovely and the staff are friendly, & even made me laugh. Will be stopping in again soon.
