Chaos today, long wait to be served then served the wrong drink, didn’t notice until I was back outside in the garden and wasn’t going to queue for ages again so gave it to my friend and I went without 2 Teenagers riding trial bikes through the pub garden onto the road outside back and forth twice, obviously should not have been driving on the road at all! Vomit on the paved area outside the patio door A bit of a disaster, first time we had been with the new owners in place Staff getting pretty stressed

We visited the Rose and Thistle a year after our previous trip when we felt unwelcome. What a change! We and every other visitor were welcomed by Mary and made to feel so special. The updated decor was fabulous and the food matched drastically improved atmosphere. We will certainly be returning and know that the welcome will be the same. Thank you Mary and Neil.

Wonderful. We've known this pub over 40 years and loved its character, history and charm. Not chocolate box prettiness, which would be so out of place in this remote valley, but an honest and sturdy presence. I had heard the main room had been "tarted up" and was filled with dread, fearing the walls would be draped in horse brasses, false books by the hundred on plastic shelves and the old photos and posters of many decades of THE show of the year gone. Whew! Yes, the tables are more numerous and smaller, but the fresh coat of paint, comfortable and appropriate seating, and THE VIEW! PERFECT! Oh, and the food? Absolutely brilliant; generous portions, tasty as could be, and exactly as described in the menu. THANKYOU.

The pub has just been refurbished but still retains its original character. Mary is a warm and welcoming host and Carl's food is fabulous. We ate there 4 times in the week we were on holiday in Alwinton and had takeaways also and all of the food was amazing. The views over the hills as you eat are spectacular and the outside patio and eating area is being refurbished too. Its dog friendly with a cute dog food menu which our dogs loved. It was lovely sitting in front of the log burner warming up after a long hill walk. We will definitely be back!! Thanks Mary and Carl, you are both doing a great job with the pub.

A fantastic pub in a beautiful area! We ate lunch here twice in the week that we were staying up at Kidlandlee, and the food was absolutely delicious on both occasions. The pub has recently changed hands and the new owners are so friendly and welcoming. Our children enjoyed the pool table, darts board, dominoes and games on a very wet afternoon, whilst we enjoyed the Pale Ale and ciders on offer. There is something for everyone, of any age, on the menu, and it is served beautifully. We will definitely come back when next in the area.

Enjoyed a really nice meal at The Rose & Thistle. The pub's just been take over. The menu on offer looks really good. The pub does need a refurb. and once that's done, it'll certainly be a top class restaurant/pub to and visit. In the meantime I'd urge people to go and try the restaurant because they won't be disappointed!

We were so looking forward to a lovely meal here after visiting last summer and loving it. Unfortunately ,we didn't know that it had changed hands. The previous owners ran it as a country pub with an eclectic mix of furnishings but great home coooked food. We hadn't booked as hadn't realised it was different but they did very kindly fit us in despite it being a Friday night. We are a family with a young child and unfortunately the new menu offers nothing for children at all. All that was suggested was ordering from the menu and they would ask chef for a smaller portion but the meals unfortunately weren't anything a child would typically eat. The meals were a bit more expensive than other pubs and very well presented and it's clear they are trying to turn it into a restaurant rather than a country pub but we felt if that was the case then they need a full renovation as the higgedly piggedly old creaky furnishings really don't tie in with the kind of food on offer. If you like fancy foods with a great view then this is great. If you are just looking for a cozy countryside pub, then this probably isn't the best choice.

Whilst on holiday in the next village we decided to eat there due to good reviews (ate there twice in the end) A good cross section of people ate there whilst we were, locals holiday tourists etc. Great views of the countryside, good beer and food and nice staff, Tamie who served us was a top notch young lad who came with a smile always. I had gammon the 1st night which was huge and my wife had steak pie, clean plates all round. The second visit i had medium rare steak which was slightly overdone but when there are so many people waiting for food that was a trivial thing, great tasting steak by the way, my wife had a burger which she really enjoyed, would be back here for sure if we visit the area again.

We were staying in Harbottle and this pub is situated in the next village along, about a 5 minute drive away, as our owner of our cottage had recommended it to us and we were told it was dog friendly we decided to give it ago. The pub itself is split into 2 halves giving you the main bar area which was lovely and a small room on the left as you enter which houses a pool table and a dart board. The small room on the left is the area where you are allowed to take dogs and although the door was locked on our first visit my husband just popped into the main bar to ask if we could sit in there, this was no problem for the landlord who straight away came to unlock the door and allow us in. We immediately were made to feel welcome and he chatted to us as if we were locals which was great. We also decided to eat in here and they servelovely home cooked food, on the first occasion I had lasagne, chips and salad which was a nice sized portion and my husband had gammon, chips and peas with a fried egg. On our second occasion we both had the steak pie with potatoes and vegetables, this was lovely and the steak just melted in your mouth. Prices are very reasonable as well. Our dog was offered water and was given a treat which was a nice touch. This pub also offers accomodation and is due to star in the next episode of Vera just with a slight name change. Would definately return if we came back to the area and would definately recommend if you are passing or staying near by.

We were staying nearby and decided to pop in to try the food. This is a good pub with good service. There were plenty of what appeared to be locals in the bar which we always feel is a good sign. The place was busy and we got in before the rush of the food orders. My husband ordered the garlic bread as a starter and the sirloin as a main. I had the ham salad without the chips. It was the Easter week end and the place was clearly busy so there was a bit of a wait for the food. The garlic bread was very good and came with a salad. Very nice. Food arrived subsequently. The sirloin was very good and came with chips and peas. My husband ordered onion rings as well which were very crisp. Ham salad was delicious with good home cooked ham, salad and coleslaw. All very tasty. Host was very good. Would recommend.

Visited the pub in February when we stayed in the village and got snowed in! Didn't take the dog to the pub at that time. Had a reasonable welcome at that time. Average food. Due to the fact that we were snowed in and couldn't take advantage of the area we came back! Have just done a walk. Decided to go to the pub for a drink to put some money in to the village rather than go home to the cottage and drink our own!We walked into the pub and were told dogs were not allowed other than in the bar or the garden! We decided on the garden which was obviously not the right decision because as we walked through to the garden we heard the disgust of the landlord. We were obviously being watched as when we had almost finished our drink the landlord came out of the pub and pretended to be busy doing something. We were going to take the glasses back to the bar on our departure when the landlord jumped out from whatever he was pretending to do and said he would take the glasses and if we wanted to come again come into the garden by the side gate (not obvious and no signs!) I told him not to worry we would not be bothering!Such a shame. So helpful in February but made to feel like a leper in September!!!!All they had to do was refer us to the sign on the door!!!Won't be going back! Won't recommend.I accept we were in the wrong but if you wish to work in the hospitality business you need a personality to deal with people like usShame he has lost several pounds from his attitude to dog ownersHe merely had to point out we were in the wrong! No need for drama!

Visited on a lunchtime and when placing food order was told as there were about 18 other people that had just ordered there would be a wait of up to 40 minutes. This was not a problem for us but good of the owner to have told us this. Many places would have said nothing! The food itself was very good, I had the cheese ploughmans salad, my wife the steak pie with a lovely pie crust. The kids had sausage and fish fingers both served with chips and beans. With 2 pints of good beer and 5 soft drinks, total came to just over £40. Well worth it.

The gammon tasted like REAL food from my childhood, the chips were freshly made and delicious and the beef pie was out of this world. I wish this pub was not so remote and nearer my home ... because its remoteness makes it unlikely I shall be able to visit again. Set in Northumberland National Park we were bit disappointed that dogs were not allowed in - even in their small outdoor space. Some of our group left, with their dogs, to eat elsewhere but around 15 of us ate here on Thursday lunchtime. Pleasant pub, fairly simple menu but plenty of choice from sandwiches/toasties to home made pies etc. Food was nicely cooked and very well presented and all of our meals were served at the same time which was great. It wasn't expensive and the man serving was chatty and pleasant. A nice watering hole in stunning surroundings - just a shame dogs can't sit in garden. We decided to stop for Sunday lunch on our way up the valley on our snow hunt. Imagine my surprise when I walked through the door to find it wasn't just a small pub but quite a large restaurant out the back. This family run business has some of the best food in the area at very reasonable prices and is well worth a visit. I planned on stopping for lunch yesterday but unfortunately upon getting there found it wasn't doing food that afternoon and ended up going back over to Rothbury for lunch quite disappointed. However Id recommend that you stop here for food if in Upper Coquet valley and hungry as I can't believe Iv bypassed this lovely place with lovely views out the back so many times.

The Rose and Thistle is way back in the Cheviots, and this remoteness only adds to its rugged charm. The food and beer are excellent, good quality, generous portions, good cellar craft, good ambience with friendly staff and locals, no nonsense, good value. A good size family room with a separate tap room, both equiped with pool tables so a game is almost guaranteed if you want one. Well worth the extra miles. Food is available most nights even in the winter, when it is quieter, updated times are displayed on a large blackboard outside the door, but if travelling any distance it might be advisable to ring and check first; maybe food days in winter could be shown on the website.

First he, and another villager, tried to help me get into the car and when that failed he gave me shelter in the pub which wasn't open at that time and also not only a warm top to wear but a hot drink and packet of biscuits and wouldn't take any payment for them.He also gave me use of his phone. This is good old-fashioned hospitality and was much appreciated. The area around Alwinton is very nice and the pub itself is nice enough and pleasant after a day on then hills. The beer is well kept and the landlord and others seem friendly enough. The inside is more brightly lit than you find in most pubs, but probably reflects the slightly old fashoned feel of the place. The bar area is large with a mixture of tables, seating and wall decoration that doesn't seem to have been planned, but rather happened by accident.Main reason for writing this review is to let people know that food is only served on (seemingly) random days in the Winter - we were unlucky. It was a Sunday, but no food. I think food was server Tuesday then Thursday through Saturday (but best check beforehand if you are going to eat).

Thought it strange, however, that another visiting family had to leave with no food because they had just called in on the off chance. Surely it wouldn't have been too much trouble to at least offer them sandwiches? Nonetheless our experience was a positive one and we would certainly stay again.

what a great village pub, you could not wish for a more friendly place to visit after a day in the hills either just to grab a drink or eat generous portions of well prepared straightforward pub food

Attached to the B & B business the pub serves decent food at a keen price, the bar was generally filled with regulars, which due to the location is to be expected, all of whom were very friendly. The waiting time for the arrival of our orders was good and the food was always fresh and hot.

Had pre-booked a table for 9 for an evening meal following our hike up to Windy Gyle. The forecast had been terrible but we were untouched by the rain that we could see all around us for most of the day before it cleared away for a wonderful afternoon and evening.Checked in first things with final numbers and when we arrived at six our grand table was laid and ready. Staff very welcoming.Good beer (one real ale) and excellent pub fare. Good service and nice atmosphere in the large bar. Steak pie was extremely good and filling.Have eaten here before and will again for our forays into the Cheviots from Tyneside.

Had a great evening here as part of my boyfriends birthday weekend. Stayed in the nearby holiday cottages and thats where I heard about it. Only a short 5 minute walk away. Didnt expect a lot but was blown away by fantastic friendly staff and amazing homey food.

This was a quick lunch, found on a windy, snowy, sunny day, friendly guy behind the bar, and one of the best scampi and homemade chips I have evr had. Hopefully we can return in happier circumstances. The church at Alwinton is worth a visit.

Visited these premises last night and found the food to be outstanding and good value for money. The place had various different parties in the premises and it was a good, relaxing, chilled atmosphere. Took 2 elderly people along with us and found the premises good for frail people as its all on 1 level and spacious! This is exactly what a country pub should be, and a pub full off traditional character...Well done...:)

We called into the Rose and Thistle at opening time. We had a very nice reasonably priced meal and a couple of beers. It was excellent and the staff were really friendly. The view from the bar is stunning. I read Jill W's comments about no dogs and suggest it may be because of the chickens that roam around. They look like rare breeds. I can appreciate that it would be disappointing to find you couldn't stay there though.

Very disappointed as walked to this pub with our dog. Only to find a large sign at the entrance saying 'NO DOGS In PUB OR GARDEN' . I can understand no dogs in a pub serving food although there was two rooms but to not allow dogs in garden us just mean. We are used to almost all country pubs being very welcoming towards dogs and their owners.

Arrived filthy, sweaty and rather weary after a day walking across the Cheviots to be greeted by a warm, friendly welcome from the landlord and a bright sunny beer garden in a spectacular setting. Soon revived by an amazing power shower in our comfortable bedroom and then a delicious steak pie in a buzzing dining area. A hearty breakfast was spent chatting to two charming cyclists also staying there and then after helpful tips from the landlord about the next stage of our walk we left this little gem of a pub. Brilliant for walkers, cyclists and families alike. Thank you so much for making our stay so memorable. Sue & Penny

I understand why they have the menu they do, walkers will love it. But chips with most of the dishes, really. We were staying in Hoseden house next door, owned by the landlord and landlady , so had Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch both cooked really really well and very tasty but we would have gone more if had more choice and a few less chips. The girls serving and behind the bar were lovely and very attentive and the pub really is very nice.

Having had Sunday lunch at the rose and thistle about a year ago and raved to everyone about it we were a little disappointed this time we went ! The meat was as tender as could be and enough veg to feed an army BUT no homemade Yorkshire pudds !! What's going on there. ? A bit of a let down ! However all is forgiven as the welcome and atmosphere makes up for any minor gripes .A peaceful , home cooked lunch at a reasonable price in an ideal setting ! Yum

This is a little gem of a place situated in the cheviot hills. We were warmly greeted by the bar staff and the place was quite busy we were seated in a cosy corner of the dining room overlooking the garden and fields hubby had a pint of local real ale which he liked I opted for glass of sparkling rose the waitress arrived soon after and took our order there was lamb beef and chicken on the Sunday roast menu but you could have something from the bar menu if you preferred, we opted for beef it arrived shortly after with a good helping of veg and mash. The beef was succulent and plenty of it with lashings of nice thick gravy, we were well looked after and with home made raspberry trifle and sticky toffee pudding for dessert that were gorgeous we had coffee and the bar owner came and chatted to us about the history of the pub a very nice fellow. We would recommend here to anyone looking for a warm welcoming place without it being too pretentious we will be back soon.

Superb accommodation, friendly and welcoming owners, great food and atmosphere - what more could you ask for? Breakfast was at 7.30 am (our choice) on the Sunday morning and Gareth provided us with one of the best 'Full English' breakfasts I've had and still was cheerful, friendly and obliging despite the early hour. The fresh fruit salad was an unexpected bonus and set us up for a brilliant day of walking in the Cheviot hills. This Inn is situated in a truly beautiful part of Northumberland. I would recommend the Rose and Thistle in Alwinton to anyone who wants a comfortable bed, great food, splendid local beer (Tyneside Blonde) and a wonderful friendly atmosphere.

We were staying locally and ate here 4 times during the week trying something different each time. Each meal was home cooked and would leave the biggest eaters satisfied. The steak pie deserves a special mention.Meals were washed down with a decent pint of local real ale and the views from the garden or through the large windows is fantastic. We intend returning one day to say hello again to Gareth and his family.

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
