We had dinner when staying at the pub, and everything was first rate. The ambience is warm and inviting, the staff are welcoming and attentive, and the food is delicious. We both had the special, venison cottage pie, and it was just the right thing for a chilly, rainy evening. This is a proper pub!

Very last minute decision to pop out somewhere for a drive, it was such a glorious evening. We stopped off at the Rose and Crown for a drink and decided to stay for dinner. We had no reservation and the staff were very welcoming and accomodating. We both chose the 8oz Flat iron steak, chimichurri, skinny fries and house salad, which was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. This is a chef who clearly takes care and pride with his food. The plate of food was fresh, clean and beautifully presented. 10/10 for those chefs who can cook and present a simple meal as it should be. Outstanding and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you.

We ate dinner at the pub and stayed overnight. It is situated in the heart of a quiet, picturesque village with thatched cottages all around. Our room was a good size and good standard. Service was good. Breakfast was okay. Dinner was mixed. I had a steak pie that was very good but others in our group were not so happy, especially with the vegetable filo parcel which, for the price (indeed for any price) really was poor in terms of quality and quantity. The hotel had a good parking area and an outside area for eating and drinks.

We hadn’t visited for several years, but with fond memories of excellent food, we booked. We weren’t disappointed. Everything was just fantastic. Holly looked after us royally, despite being the only person there to serve drinks, take orders, serve orders, clear tables she stayed calm and cheerful, giving the appearance of having all the time in the world for whoever she was serving. Our food was perfectly cooked, (the pie, the fish, the lasagne and the chicken. Oh! And the treacle tart!) delicious and of more than ample quantity. We had a memorable lunchtime. Thank you.

When I entered this charming, quintessential English village Inn, bedecked in Christmas decorations, I thought that I was entering 'Pub paradise'. Although a large pub with several beautifully furnished, individual rooms, guests and regulars were barred from sitting in three-quarters of it, as there was a private party on that evening. The room I was given (number 7) was ice cold, and there was nothing to hang my clothes on. No wardrobe, no coat hangers, not even a hook on the door. There was no chair, so perhaps I was meant to throw them on the floor? The toilet cistern in my bathroom was leaking all over the floor, so they moved me, begrudgingly to a superior room (number 2). Again freezing cold. The heating did eventually come on, very sparsely at around 7.00 p.m. At least it had two comfortable chairs to sit upon and a wall rack on which to hang my clothes. I arose at 5.30 a.m. and had a shave in nice, hot water. By 6.00 a.m. the hot water tank had emptied and my shower was freezing cold. I had to boil a kettle and get washed in the sink, on what was - 4 degrees C outside. Again, no heating in my room. That came on at around 7.00 a.m. I complained to the manageress Holly. but no apology or discount off my bill was offered. Excellent breakfast. Most disappointed!

Aware that this restaurant was under new management we opted to book our lunch meal for a large group. Many of us have years of experience in the catering & hospitality and our thoughts were unanimous. The standard of food was A-MAZ-ING! Everything was perfect, the staff, fabric of the building (warm and cosy) the selection and range on offer. All 3 courses were fantastic, presentation, temperature, flavor, portion size, all served on beautiful crockery which complement the quality food perfectly. Having spoken briefly with the owner, she clearly has a winning formular with a brilliant team. Thank you again for a super lunch. We shall be back!

Thought we would try Sunday lunch as I had called in some weeks earlier whilst walking the Ridgeway. Staff friendly and attentive, but not too much. Roast was plentiful and enjoyable. One for chicken and one for beef, both nicely cooked. Only noticed once looking at the puddings menu that we hadn’t had any roast potatoes, very unobservant of us both but a minor flaw in our experience.

First and most important we enjoyed a nice meal. The starters, main course and drinks served was presented nicely. A Saturday evening and it was very busy and although some customers complained about the delayed service it was worth the wait.Sadly, we review our experience as average and the star rating only made it to 3/5 due to the food ... Our one night stay at the Rose & Crown was so sadly let down due to the following ...Guests staying presumed the bar closed at 11PM (as per opening times). Sadly the management ignored the fact they had paying guests staying and thought it was OK to have people in the bar shouting, laughing and socialising until 0100. It concluded when hotel guests complained. With no consideration given to Covid social distancing rules and no consideration for paying guests we left The Rose & Crown tired, sad and can only advise IF you consider the Rose & Crown, then maybe really think about alternative locations for a good nights sleep!

Three of us booked after reading a local fb recommendation on an "Eat out to help out" evening. We were shown into their Dining Room but it was terribly hot with no windows open (just after a huge storm) so declined and sat in the bar. Someone took our drinks orders fairly quickly but then we were ignored. After 20+ minutes we asked if we could order. Menu is a lot more limited than their online sample (I was planning on salad in the heat but none on offer) Food arrived around an hour after we got there.Skate wing was lovely but plain boiled potatoes were too hard to eat. Son loved his venison but husband's steak was overcooked and not easy to eat with standard knives. The two young men serving were very friendly but way too busy to bother with small issues. Regarding deserts ... I have to say the fruit parfait was such a let down as it was just so tiny in comparison to the huge plate of crumble the others had, although delicious and accompanied by a chilli/mango side (that I can't eat).In summary - felt sorry for the two overworked staff who were trying their best with way too many bookings to be able to provide a good service plus a kitchen full of orders. Also felt food suffered because of it and had we been paying the usual price would have had to raise a few issues ...

My wife and myself visited the Rose and Crown after a recommendation from a friend, having been past its a nice looking pub in a lovely village setting. When we arrived we had a table booked and were able to order a drink at the bar and shown walked through a pub and shown through to a dinning area and this is where it went rapidly down hill. Apart from a family of 4 and us this part of the pub was very quite and does not share the atmosphere of the rest of the pub which was a bit of a downer but livable, well that was until you realise staff forget all about you. After a 30 minute wait we went and ordered direct from the bar our sharing starter and mains.25 mins later we were saved our baked camembert sharer, that's almost an hour after entering, To add to the service problem, even though I had finished my first drink I was not asked by the staff whether I wanted anything else even though they visited us twice in quick succession. it was only when I was server our mains whether we were asked if we wanted another drink and after seeing our mains we were disappointed and ultimately wanted to leave. Our mains were at best relatively basic, my £14 beef burger didn't look like it and my wife pan fried salmon and mussels had a lot to be desired, element of the garnish could not be cut with a knife and it was swimming in a watery sauce. Maye judging from the reviews this was just a bad case but against its rivals, it certainly costs more and the food is at best average.

A change of ownership earlier this year has disappointed. The food has been variable. Our last visit was the worst. My wife’s chicken and blue cheese was inedible, my fish and chips came with frozen peas as opposed to the mushy peas ordered, and the greens never turned up despite 2 requests. Service was poor with 20 minutes to get a bottle of wine, following 2 reminders. Likewise the sweet didn’t turn up and we said forget it and asked for the bill. That prompted a promise it would be 2 minutes. The bill then turned incorrect which had to be changed. Also the waiter slagged off a table of other guests who we knew!Shame, the previous tenants were very good.

This pub has been under new ownership since July 2019. We were frequent visitors before then when it was a lovely friendly atmospheric pub, especially at Christmas. Now - oh dear. It seems the new management haven't run a pub before maybe? Visited for lunch in July - we sat outside and the service and food were OK. Went back for Sunday lunch - never again. Maybe it's a staff issue? Mediocre (and expensive) food, just awful service (and we we prompted to tip twice - we didn't), chair seat fabric was filthy - not a nice experience.

I went here with a larger party from work. They were very accommodating and efficient at ensuring we only paid for what we had and we'd pre-ordered our food to save time. I was disappointed to see that the vegetarian option on the menu hadn't changed since I last visited a year or so ago (possibly more). Whilst nice, the falafel burger is a pretty 'boring' choice and there are lot more things possible with slight adaptations to the menu choices. It wasn't obvious to say that it was a homemade burger either, which would have made it a bit more special.

Came across this wonderful pub after a walk a few weeks ago when we had a drink. The pub was full for food and we then found out how popular it was and the food looked lovely. After leaving and being very happy with the friendly service and warmth of the place we decided to return today for Sunday lunch and as expected was not disappointed. Greeted by lovely staff and seated at our table 30 minutes early when arrived way before our time. A very nice starter each and a delicious Roast. Extremely lovely food, delightful staff and and all round happy place to visit. Shall definitely return many times. Highly recommend.

We moved to the area over 8 months ago and have spent the odd Sunday trying to find some quality establishments for the great British roast, at least to our liking anyway. With the Rose & Crown you could say we probably don’t need to look or try anywhere else. The Sunday roast is outstanding and if you do need any other recommendation then the fact it appears in the Guardian’s Top 50 places for Sunday lunch (2017) should convince you.

We had a group of ten and the service was very good with excellent food. Nice size portions cooked to perfection. There was a good choice, with plenty of vegetables and for £30 for a great three course Xmas dinner it was fantastic value.

Een echte traditionele Engelse pub, met een daarbij horende inrichting, maar de keuken is echt zeer goed. Geen grote kaart, wel heerlijke gerechten.

Whilst working locally I stopped here for my evening meal and I am very glad I did. From the car park the pub looks very inviting and is well cared for. There's a good outside space that is no doubt very popular in better weather.

Really well done, staff very pleasant, not in your face but friendly. Made us feel like nothing was too much trouble. Food - delicious. Charcuterie sharing platter, nicely done, tasted fresh not tired. Steak - excellent, both had that, husbands stilton sauce was gorgeous. New York cheesecake - sublime. The creme brûlée (according to husband ) - truly outstanding. Really worth a visit.

Cracking Sunday roast which was served quickly and followed by the (usual) additional vegetables and really good cauliflower cheese!Nice "vibe" was clearly evident within the staff which readily (and nicely) overlapped into the customer experience.Looking forward to returning another time.

Called in on the spur of the moment for lunch on a sunday after visiting loacl country show Staff were very helpful especially with my wifes Gluten Free requirement the food arrived and was more than adequate Tasty and HOT the only downside was thateach time someone arrived there was a converstation about where to seat people and the staff kept saying that the kitchen staff would be "under pressure" but we heard this before our food arrived so this gave us doubts as to the standard of food but as i said it was very nice thank you oh i nearly forgot reasonably priced too glad i only had the Small Roast phew !!!

Lovely looking country pub. Inside it was split in two halves - one side was the bar felt almost like an old fashioned public bar and seemed to be full of mostly men watching football, the other half laid out with tables predominantly for dining. There is an extensive menu plus additional choices on blackboards on the walls. The servers, in the main young adults, were lacking enthusiasm and a smile in most cases sadly. The food was good. Large portion sizes. My friend had the pie which was served in its own dish with veg on the side also in its own dish and really chunky big chips. Another of our party though had the fish pie which seemed to be 20% fish to 80% potato. The servers left us to ourselves pretty much which was ok but we had to go to the bar to order more drinks. And when we were paying and were asked was everything alright, we told the server about the fish pie and he didn't really seem to know what to do with the information and I couldn't be sure he would've done anything. So lovely evening but shame about the fish pie and the service.

The atmosphere of the village pub is very much evident with a hardcore element of regular drinking locals. The dining experience is not great and needs revamping with regard to both selection of food available and English speaking staff serving it.

I both are here and stayed here. The restaurant was wonderful. 2 of us shared the baked Camembert with apples, pears and bread as a hearty afternoon snack. It was beautifully presented, plentiful and delicious. We also had dinner here and we were both pleased with our pies; steak and Guiness for me, vegetarian for my friend. Both came with large portions of perfectly cooked fresh broccoli, carrots and green beans. Again, delicious. My room was lovely and large with a handy power strip and a comfy armchair. The only negative was the bed was quite uncomfortable; a thin mattress on wooden slats that tilted to one side. The staff said they are refurbishing the rooms and hopefully new mattresses are in the plan. Other than that, I would stay here again.

Had a Sunday lunch for 2, my wife had previously been and rated this village pub part of the Greene King group. In a way the pub is traditional with a bar, restaurant layout but with a COVID canopy with booth style tables. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The draught beer on offer was a Greene King summer brew and a guest ale from Hardy & Hansons, Old Trip. Very reasonably priced at £4.80. We both had a roast, I had beef and my wife pork. My beef was plentiful but a little chewy but wife’s pork was good. The roast potatoes were very good and the vegetables were plentiful if a little soggy. There was a good sweet selection I had the apple pie with custard which was alright. I don’t know why there haven’t been any recent reviews but based on this visit I won’t be rushing back, sorry.
