Ronaq Restaurant - New Waverley in Edinburgh, City of

We have enjoyed many meals at the Ronaq both in Market Street and in Comely Bank, but I am afraid our experience on Sunday evening was terrible. My husband had the fish tikka and after eating we headed for the bus. On travelling back home he became really ill, burning and sickness. When we did manage to get home he was sick all night and most of Sunday. Don’t know what has happened to this restaurant but I definitely won’t return. I called the Manager on Monday to raise a complaint but it was as though he wasn’t interested. There are better places to eat in Edinburgh. Shocking.

Looking at previous reviews I was wondering if I was at the same restaurant 🤷‍♀️. Visited on Sunday night lady serving was very abrupt food Mmhh well starter was ok but you can’t go wrong with a onion bhaji can you? But the mains were awful my black lentil curry was too sweet and 2 of the party had little to no spice in it whatsoever and 1 of the party had far too much spice. I wouldn’t normally moan about a restaurant as we all have different tastes but it puts itself out there as a gourmet place and it definitely wasn’t!

A fantastic meal! The haddock tikka was exceptional and the Chicken Shaslick the best I have ever had. The chef is very talented. Wine list is varied and quite reasonable. The waiting staff are very attentive and hard working and will try hard to provide you with exactly what you want. A shout out specifically to Polly - one of the waitresses who was charming and so very helpful.

Such an amazing place - this is our 3 rd visit . We went for my daughter’s graduation this time a group of 7 adults. I took decorations and a cake the day before and they had it all ready for us arriving . Great service and lovely food . The staff are so friendly and attentive as 2 of us were gluten free and one peanut allergy .Thank you . I cannot wait to come back 😍 x

Good solid Indian food. It was a little quiet when we went but I have no idea why! Great little restaurant with all classic Indian fishers available. Good portions!

Lovely staff, attentive but not too intrusive. Food very nice and variety of drinks. Surroundings very pleasant and clean. Restaurant is on the 2nd floor so good for people and train watching as opposite the train station so very convenient if you’re catching a train or staying at the hotel next door. I would definitely recommend and will return again.

Great food and friendly, nice service. The starters and the main course, The chicken, the lamb, the side dishes: All very flavorful and delicious. Our waiters were very friendly, offering good suggestions and being very timely with their enquiries about our experience. 👍👍👍

Lots of vegetarian choices, which is important to me. Staff were lovely, from the start. Food was delicious, onion bhajis were the best I've had in a long time. The service was quick, and my vegetarian Rogan Josh was lovely and tasted really fresh. I've had some curries in other places that haven't been a patch on this standard of cooking. Nice portion sizes too...I wasn't overfaced. One complaint...no Ras Malai for pudding but I squashed a gulab jamun down!

I was getting some dinner to finish off my last night in edinburgh and I decided to give this place a try. At first I was excited and I placed my order, the waiter recommended a started and I said I didn’t know what it was and he said he would bring it for me to try I don’t know why I was under the impression that I wouldn’t be charged so seeing that on the bill was surprising since it was about 5£ but I’ll move on. I ordered the tikka masala which I’ve had many times at other indian restaurants and this time it tasted like coconut milk, no tomato or spice at all and when I asked if i could have something to make it a bit spicer the waiter just said “well tikka marsala is sweet” and shrugged me off. For the price the portion size was small. This was my most expensive meal in the city and it was by far the most disappointing as well.

Our first visit to this branch & what a warm welcome we received from every member of staff. The food was delicious, wine very reasonably priced & the service very attentive. We started with the king prawn butterfly & chicken pakora which were amazing, the meat & cheese kofte was a wee bit too different for our tastes. The chicken shashlick was superb & the sauce in the curry was very tasty but the chicken in the curry sauce was a wee bit tough. Shame as the shashlick chicken was so moist. Decor is very tasteful too. Would highly recommend.

We visited when staying in Edinburgh for a few days. A warm welcome, with attentive but not overwhelming service. Excellent choice of food with great spicing and good portion size. My lamb was melt in the mouth quality and the saag Dahl side fish really tasty.

Booked for 12.30 lunch for three of us and all had mixed thali plates. Food was very tasty but… one friend ordered a second beer about 1.45. Then 5 minutes later waiter says we close at 2 and we’ll give you 10 minutes to drink up. I had NO idea they closed at 2 - who on earth closes at 2 in town? 2.10 waitress appears with coat on and asks us to leave saying that closing time was on the website & we should have known. Well that ruined our lunch out and we will never be back or recommend. 😡

Came across this gem during a short stay in Edinburgh. Wonderful experience right from walking through the door. Warm welcome by genuinely friendly staff. Classy modern and clean restaurant. There's a bit of construction work going on in the area at the moment but if you let that put you off you are really going to miss out! Nice outlook from upstairs across to Calton Hill. Wide, varied choice of dishes on the menu including vegetarian and helpful advice from staff resulted in well prepared and well presented main courses and delicious sweets. Food was excellent and great value for money. We also had cocktails as a treat which were made superbly. All in all this was a great dining experience we would thoroughly recommend and definitely revisit next time we holiday in Edinburgh. Thank you all Ronaq staff. 5*

A little disappointed with the Lamb and Chicken Korma as the sauce seemed overly sweet and looked a little curdled.Papadum,Raita and Naan was nice. The staff were very attentive and friendly and may go again but to try a diiferent main course.

I had booked a table for 2 as it was hubbies birthday. When we walked in we were warmly greeted and shown to our table upstairs. (Please note there is a lift available). The chair was comfy and plenty of table room. The waiter brought our lunch menu and explained the dishes on offer. (Please note they have changed the lunch menu to that shown on their site). It now a choice of three complete menu dishes. We ordered the meat menu and it arrived on a sectioned stainless steel plate and we were not disappointed what was on it. One section for starter, three section holding chicken, lamb different curries, boiled rice and chapatti. Oh boy was it tasty and we cleared our plates. We washed it down with a J20 and Coke. The bill was £25.80 ( to which £5.90 was for the drinks). I would recommend this place and for one will definitely be going back.

Visited for a meal on New Years Eve. The decor of the restaurant is elegant and atmospheric. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. I would visit again.

Ordered food through Uber Eats from Ronaq. Both chicken dishes were tough, not fresh & unedible. The sauces that the chicken came with was great, so we ended up having sauce, rice & bread. On contacting Uber Eats with photos, their response was that they couldn't help & to reach out to the restaurant which is merely passing the buck as it is down to Uber Eats to rectify if ordered through them. Maybe just unlucky as have had Ronaq food before & was great.

We came with friends and on arrival we were Seated promptly to our table. We ordered a bottle of wine, various food off the menu so we could all share. The waiter was helpful and knowledgeable. Food arrived in a timely manner with hot plates. Food was great with lots of flavour. Only negative was one of the breads was overcooked. All in all would definitely recommend this restaurant. Service was great and waiter was honest removing a wrong item off our bill when we hadn’t even noticed. Thank you for a lovely meal.

We had a booking for 4 and on arrival we’re seated quickly. Our coats were taken to the cloak room for us and as it was winter, that was good as we all had big bulky overcoats on. The decor in the restaurant is beautiful & the seats are really comfortable. The waiter was very helpful and advised on certain menu questions. The food was delicious. The service was excellent and the cost was mid range. Definitely worth a visit. It is at the back of Waverley station, so only five minutes from getting on or off the train.

First time ever I have had to walk out of a restaurant. Waited 35 mins for our booked table, wasn’t offered a drink. Finally seated and left alone for 15 minutes until ‘the manager’ asked for our drinks, we said we were ready for food as we had been told 45 mins previous to look at the online menu. Starters eventually arrived and 1 was wrong, ate it anyway as had waited long enough. Food was nice.Waiter took our empty start plates away so quickly and clearly hadn’t noticed our empty glasses? Dinner arrived before we even seen another waiter to order a drink (probably 30 minutes).Another wrong course. Finally got the girls attention who first seated us, she argued with me that the tikka masala is yellow (not orange) and is sweet and contains chutney. I don’t think so...Gave up at this point, asked for them to remove the mains and get our bill ASAP, asked the girl for the manager and the original man waiter came up? Shocked if he was the manager and his lack of customer service/hospitality skills.To be fair he offered it on the house after that and a long discussion and agreement of how terrible the management is, but we decided to pay for our 2 drinks and 2 starters. Shouldn’t have bothered really.Don’t waste your time or money!Also very overcrowded. Without a ruler stick I would be certain that there was not 1m gap to our next table, although we had a good laugh with them about how bad the service was! (They waited 2hrs between courses).

Pathetic taste. Quality have significantly deteriorated over lockdown period of comely bank branch Edinburgh .i unfortunately order twice once in October and I thought less try again in December but to my disappointment both time worst ever smelly undercooked chicken and rotten rice I got.

Todas nuestras 4 comidas principales eran demasiado picantes y la salsa Tikka sabía más a salsa Korma. Lamentablemente no volvería.

Este restaurante estaba al lado del Premier Inn en el que nos estábamos quedando, así que reservamos una mesa para el martes por la noche, es un gran restaurante y la comida era excelente El restaurante en sí estaba impecable al igual que los baños, los espacios entre las mesas también eran buenos, debido a lo que ha estado sucediendo, todos están siendo extremadamente cuidadosos. A medida que pasamos una noche entre semana, también hubo una reducción en la factura que no sabíamos si recuerdo bien.Creo que fue un 50% de descuento en su pedido de comida, pero no sé cuánto tiempo ni cuándo termina esa oferta definitivamente vale la pena visitar este lugar.

Este lugar sucio me dio una intoxicación alimentaria, y en un viaje de 3 días me tomó una buena parte de mi tiempo. ¡Y para colmo, no me dieron un desierto por el que había pagado! ! La comida era insípida y poco atractiva, parecía algo que haría en casa. Ahórrese tiempo y dinero, vaya al Costa de al lado. Recomendaría ir a la hamburguesería artesanal co. y evita este lugar sucio! !

JUST EAT EDINBURGH DRIVER EATING FOOD, THEFT!!!!!Ordered food from Ronaq restaurant totalling to £60. The website said it would be delivered by 20:39. This time kept pressing on and on. I received a text from the Just Eat driver at 21:00 asking for our postcode, which I gave immediately. I then recieved yet another call saying he had no idea where it was. We had given the exact postcode and address, fully detailed. I then recieved yet another call with a then extremely rude angry male. We are not from Edinburgh, we do not know all of the street names, this is why we oreded a take away. As a delivery driver they should be familar with the roads and their names. But this driver treated me in such a rude disrespectful way as though it were my fault. By 21:49 and several phone calls later from the driver and from us to Just eat customer services we still had not received our food. I received a notification stating that the driver had 'successfully' delivered our food. But no food had arrived. We phoned the restaurant explaining the situation and they spoke to Just eat them selves, they also did not get any where. The phone was also put down on them and they were also treated with lack of respect. Eventually it resulted with our family left with no food, our diabetic child left with a hypoglycaemic episode due to the long wait and 2 of us having to go to the restaurant and paying yet another £60 for a new meal. TOTALLING TO £120. Absolutely disgraceful.

Excellent Indian restaurant. Service was very prompt and friendly without being over attentive.Food was very good and very good value. I had the bindi gosht with a veg curry side dish and both were delicious. Nothing was dripping in oil (an occasional risk with Indian restaurants). Rice was especially good. The house craft beer is recommended too.If I was picking holes I might say that the papadoms and pickle tray were no better than average.Only came here because I was staying at the hotel next door. But would certainly come back if I am in the area.

Very nice indian restaurant and good customer service. The food was very nice and quick as well. Would definitely go back

Good food and viewLocated just off the Royal Mile and ideal for Jurys Inn, the Premier Inn or Waverley Station, we had a very good meal here. The menu has a wide choice with all the usual favourites, good portion sizes and friendly service. The food was very good and the staff are very happy to recommend dishes or to offer advice on spicing. Wine by the glass or bottle, their own very decent craft beer and a surprisingly good view from the restaurant which is on the first floor. I would very happily return when next in Edinburgh which is the best recommendation I can give.

My wife and I visited Ronaq on a short trip to Edinburgh. We fancied a curry and couldn’t have booked a better place. The restaurant is set out in a clean modern style and very inviting. The best bit though was the quality of the food. Fantastic. We had curries that we had never tasted before which was a great. Hanged from the run of the mill curries you get in most Indian restaurants. We will return on our next visit to Edinburgh

Ronaq means gorgeous - but the food is not. It’s acceptable, but flavours are average and the seasoning inconsistent. We tried the Ronaq special, the fish Balti, couple of lamb dishes, chicken tikka and a dal dish. The clear winner was the dal dish, wouldn’t be surprised if the head chef was vegetarian. It’s very hard to present curries in any other way than rustic but the attempts to do so by the kitchen while commendable were in vain. Kirsch cherries on naan bread? Apple slivers and tomatoes atop a balti? Reasonable portions. Very conveniently located close to Waverley Station, Hollyrood, hotels (eg Premier Inn, Travelodge) and Royal Mile. Nice views of city lights. Contemporary decor, bright and warm interiors. Service is pleasant and efficient.
