Established in 1871, The Rock and Sole Plaice is the oldest chippy (and most outrageous pun) in London. Our expectations were sufficiently high that we walked there in the rain from the British Museum. A table was available, no doubt because it was situated in front of the open door, and service was polite but perfunctory. There is a variety of fish, and cod was recommended—all of which are fried in peanut oil, the high smoke point allowing for a crisper batter. The oil can leave a subtle aftertaste, however, and I would have preferred a more neutral one. I’m not certain, in fact, but that fish and chips, when accompanied by several pints of cast-conditioned ale, are just as good (if not better) at a pub such as The Salisbury or The Eagle in Cambridge.

Nice food but massively overpriced. The place isn't anything special, neither is the food. A huge service charge was added and we were then asked if we would like any change? I can only assume that the staff don't get the service charge since they were so eager for more money. Given the level of service and lack of emotion on their behalf I imagine they won't make much in tips.

The price is a bit higher than other fish and chips places but the portions are hugee, you can pick between small and large, definitely get the smaller one. It says they are the oldest and best fish&chips and I believe them! Both the fish and chips and the chicken are very good, but I can say that the gravy sauce is especially excellent. You only go for gravy. The sausage is average, the potatoes are at fish&chips standard, and the chicken and fish are above standard. But, I didn't like the attitude of 1 staff member at all. When I couldn't hear what a person at the table was saying, I turned to the person next to him and asked "what is he saying?" It is not said. It's a shame, you can ask again or say you didn't hear it, such impatience, rudeness and disrespect is not nice at all, it was just one waiter who did this. If he reads it, he should know that I will give it one star just for him.

The highlight of the meal was the fish, which was cooked perfectly—tender, flavorful, and well-seasoned. The accompanying potatoes were also delicious, with a nice balance of crispness and seasoning. It is OK. Even though there were tables free we were refused to seat because we had only 3/5 of the people present. The other 2 were 15 minutes away coming towards the restaurant. After waiting 15 minutes and observing other groups pass in front of us, when our time came we had to wait a little bit more because the big tables were taken by smaller groups. That is fair, the restaurant want to squeeze the maximum number of guests in the lowest amount of time. The fishes were very good and if not by the price it could be a general recommendation. The chips were standard without any special qualities or deffects. We paid about 35 pounds each with some of us sharing the drinks or having tap water. The tip was automatically included without the option to remove it - which seems to be a new standard in London.

Rock & Sole Plaice is a true institution when it comes to fish and chips in London, and with a history dating back to 1871, it’s easy to see why this place is so revered. The moment you step inside, you can feel the weight of history, with its charming and authentic atmosphere that effortlessly transports you back to a time when fish and chips were a beloved staple of British cuisine. I had the classic fish and chips, opting for the cod loin, and I can confidently say it’s among the best I’ve ever tasted. The fish was cooked to absolute perfection—crispy on the outside, yet tender and flaky on the inside. Paired with a side of tartar sauce, the flavors were simply divine. The chips deserve special mention as well; they were clearly homemade or custom-made for the outlet, with a texture and taste that complemented the fish beautifully. It’s clear that Rock & Sole Plaice takes great pride in maintaining the quality and authenticity of their food, making for an exceptional dining experience. What further enhanced my visit was the impeccable service. Our server, Sushank, was a standout. Originally from India, he brought a warm and attentive energy to the dining experience, ensuring that every guest felt welcomed and well cared for. His courteous and friendly demeanor added a personal touch that made the meal all the more enjoyable. In summary, Rock & Sole Plaice is not just a place to grab a bite—it's a piece of culinary history. With its perfectly cooked fish and chips, rich legacy, and outstanding service, it offers a dining experience that’s both nostalgic and satisfying. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this is one spot that should be on your must-visit list for an authentic taste of London.

I haven't visited Mabel's Tavern for many years, possibly as long as a decade ago. However, seeing it was still a Shepherd Neame pub, I decided to chance it, being in the area; I wasn't disappointed. A typical corner-pub, Mabel's Tavern is set back a little from the hurly-burly of King's Cross. It has a well-maintained exterior, and the interior is spotless. There are some screens showing sport, but it doesn't have that dodgy feel of a 'big screen' pub. The cask ale range is Shepherd Neame with Spitfire, Masterbrew, Late Red and Whistable Bay all on. I sampled the first three, and all were in good condition; I also caught a glimpse of the manager sampling a new line after a cask change: always a good sign. The food is pricey (£17.50 for haddock and chips), but this is probably about par for the area. The staff are friendly, competent and knowledgeable. The pub started filling up towards the end of my visit, so it's obviously popular. It's well worth a visit, if you're waiting for a train, a devotee of Shepherd Neame beers, or simply want to enjoy a pleasnt drink with some friends.

Stopped in for lunch with my wife and thoroughly enjoyed it. Tasty beers, wonderful steak pie, and hot chips! Way to go!
