Rock Salt in Portsmouth

Normally get a great service however I ordered my food on line at 6.15 pm and after several phone calls it finally arrived at 8.40 pm, I appreciate that you get busy but I am not sure anyone can justify taking 2 hours and 30 minutes to deliver

Love being lied too about delivery .. rubbish delivery times lied and don’t trust them .. avoid avoid

Worst delivery time ever , it would be quicker to build your own fish and chip shop,. Catch the fish yourself and still eat the food before rock salt delivers

When our order arrived we had some things missing. The food quality tasted disgusting. Just tasted like cardboard. We much prefer the master fryer. Even the additional Mayo tasted horrible. It’s overpriced you can get better quality for the money your paying, elsewhere.

was empty when we walked in ... still took 20+ minutes for dinner due to them doing delivery orders . food quality was poor even though fresh cooked . prices were out of this world stupidly high .. 25 quid for 3 fish and chips sort it out !! staff friendly enough

Love this shop for fish and chips and the kids loved their sausage from here too always a great portion size plenty to go round! New owners very friendly and carrying on the great taste aswell

My family and I would never go anywhere else! Pedro is such a lovely friendly person and the food is amazing, stays hot for so long and the portions are absolutely huge! The food tastes great and is well worth every penny - would recommend to everyone!

Wednesday 4 March 2020 Dear Tripadvisor, I have visited Rock Salt several times recently, and I recommend the cod, I had some last week and it was divine, my cat Squawker wolfed it down. The roast chicken breast is really good too, and Squawker approved of that as well. What can I say? I was welcomed almost as family by the very friendly Pedro and his staff, the place is well run, clean, and situated right in the middle of town. Good food at good prices, good to see. We were recommended to try this and although there are only a few tables as it is mainly takeaway the fish and chips were absolutely delicious we live in Yorkshire but these were far superior. The batter was light and crisp the cod was excellent and the chips brilliant. Would go back

Advertised as doing gluten free on a Friday yet when I rang they were no longer doing it. Very disappointing. GF should be available all the time but if you say on a Friday there must be this option, otherwise say only on at selected times. Not cool! I will not be calling again.

Was visiting Portsmouth from Crawley and looked up where to get fish and chips that was close to where we’re we’re staying. Came across reviews for this place and decided to give it a go. Wasn’t disappointed!! Ordered a large cod, large chips and sausage between two of us and went back to our hotel room to enjoy them. Wow. The flavour and freshness of the chips alongside the crispness of the freshly battered cod was amazing... and HUGE portion!! Fantastic value dinner. We were stuffed. Definitely recommend giving this place a visit! Wish we lived closer.

Omg this is the best fish and chip shop around by far.. The chips r cooked to perfection the batter on the cod is just wow the chicken bites were out of this world the sausages were so tasty couldn’t recommend this chip shop enough best thing to do would be go try it for urself I promise u won’t be disappointed. The staff and manager are amazing too very friendly and welcoming. Only fish and chip shop I will ever use xx

I arrived to precisely 1 other person in the chip shop, which was great because obviously that meant not a long wait, right? WRONG. I stood at the till for a while and the guy frying the fish or whatever he was doing was looking around into thin air. The girl at the till almost took my order then didn't as another guy on the phone asked her to calculate the total on the order for him cause he had no idea how?! Then someone came in with her daughter. I'd still not been served. The lady at the table waiting had her food put together and gven to her by the lady at the till, i'd still not been asked my order. The lady behind me demanded she must have a fresh sausage because her daughter dropped hers. I am still not being served and the till girl takes another phonecall for the guy who is meant to be on the phone but this time the fry guy joins in to tally the total. The lady behind me loses patience, says she's going to miss her bus, hands money to the fry cook and asks for a sausage completely bypassing me!! At this point everyone has been rude, ive still not been served and no one cares. The chip shop itself is about as impressive as the staff. Really nothing exciting to think about. After 15-20 mins I decided to leave. It actually took me less time to go to the shop, buy my own potatoes and oil and go home to make my own than it felt like it took just for someone to take my order at Rock Salt. I won't be going there again. Shame as the first time I had chips there they were alright. That's the only reason they got 2 stars and not 1. And their loss, I was going to make a large order for 4.

I purchased some fish and chips today from this restaurant and quite frankly it was shocking. I placed the order via deliveroo at 12:35, and was told it would arrive at 13:15. I waited until 13:30 and still no food. I then rang the restaurant who told me it was on its way, so I hung up and waited until 13:50, another 20 minutes, it still hadn’t arrived so I rang again. I was met with the response of ‘ you only rang 20 minutes ago’ and ‘we only received the order at 13:10’ and ‘I don’t know what we can do to help you’. This I found absolutely disgusting, if you are going to sell food, then make sure it’s efficient and you should be trying to do everything you can to help the customer, aka, deliver hot food. When I finally received the order it was cold and horrible. Never ordering from here again.

This is now my fave chippy their large portions of chips are huge (which means chippy night for the dogs too) great quality every time

Swapped our chippy for this one and first order was wrapped with 4 sheets of paper and we only live around the corner but the chips were cold when unwrapped. Didn't say anything then but we thought we'd try again today and advised that the chips last time were cold. After an apology he gave us a free curry sauce. Unwrapped these to discover hot chips but overcooked heavily battered fish which was thinner than a flat fish. Appreciate that some would enjoy overcooked over battered thin fish but not for us. Decided to go back to our old chippy but changed to promote local business.

Excellent service from the manager and hisstaff they are very polite and well mannered and the food is the best chippy in Portsmouth. Not greasy just perfect only chip shop i ever use would deof recommend too. Food is really really good...

We had our first order last night, the fish was amazing and the portions massive, although we didn’t receive a fish cake in our order. It arrives within 40 minutes of ordering. I will order again and would of given 5 stars had we had the fish cake

My brother and I go to Rock Salt every couple of weeks and avail of their OAP special price fish and chip meal. It is always cooked fresh, and Pedro always smiles, as do the rest of his staff. My son regularly orders from the takeaway service, he has the gluten free option due to having coeliac disease. I wouldn't choose to go anywhere else.

The service could not be better here, Pedro is always welcoming and even remembered my birthday a whole year later!!!! Excellent fish and chips, big portions and great value for money - absolutely couldn't fault it and wouldn't consider going anywhere else!!!!

We have used rock salt for eating in and home delivery. Cannot fault the food. Fish lovely along with the chips (and very generous portions ) Prices extremely reasonable. We live in southsea and always happy to deliver to us. Food arrives piping hot. We never go anywhere else !

Probably the best fried fish around this part of the coast. Not to oily, crisp and dry. Very good chips, not frozen ones. Very friendly staff. Had cod and chips, fantastic is all I can say. Keep up the good work.

TERRIBLE customer service. I was overcharged, I questioned it on delivery with the delivery driver & delivery driver told me he didn't know & to phone up if any problems, I don't see why he couldn't have just phoned up or checked or refunded me right then.

Female who serves here is extremely rude. Worst customer service i have experienced. Will not come back to this chip shop as plenty of other chip shops around that will treat you with respect.

I have just had the pleasure of having a takeaway from rock salt. As I unwrapped the paper my excitement grew and then BANG !!! A red sausage emerged. I then bit in to the most delicious saveloy I have ever tasted. Scampi were delicious and the chips were plentiful. Sides of mushy peas and gravy were the cherry on a delicious cake.

This has to be the best fish and chip shop anywhere , the portions are very large and also very cheap everything is cooked to perfection and they also deliver free wherelse can you get this service

We stopped for fish and chips on our way home to London from a couple of days in the Isle of Wight. We chose Rock Salt because of its good reviews. The place on the outside is a fairly standard take-out chip shop with three or four small tables, but the product from the kitchen was outstanding. We each ordered haddock and chips, and the portions were huge, the chips perfect, and the fish stunning - very fresh, delicious and beautifully battered. This was better F and C than we usually have in London, and for about a third of the price! Congratulations to the cook! The staff were friendly, polite, and helpful, and went out of their way to assist us. We almost felt like family by the time we left. I'm sorry we don't live closer so we could return.

Visiting my daughter in Portsmouth we walked the dogs along southsea seafront. We decided after the walk to take home a fish & chip supper. We chose five fish and chip shops which had good reviews. Three in southsea one in stamshaw and one in north end. My daughter is vegetarian bordering on vegan so asked me to make sure that the oil used is suitable for her and that both the fish and the chips do not have anything else cooked in with them. All five shops cook beefburgers in the same fryer along with the fish. Rock and Salt, North End, Portsmouth was the only place that said they would batter a piece of fish for my daughter using gluten free flour and would cook the fish in with the chips so that no meat juices would touch it. I couldn't believe that they would go to such lengths to please - hats off to the management. She loved her fish and chips and so did my husband and I.

Best chips in Portsmouth, the food here is always good and the staff are friendly. Their delivery rider is very polite and helpful. One of the few chip shops around here that do deliver! A lifesaver when we're on the go.

Terrible chips! This shop used to sell the best fish and chips but has gone way down hill over the past year! Most chips come out poor quality and all bruised. Very bad quality of potato. You will lose a lot of customers with the quality of food and service you provide. Sorry for being harsh but you really need to change something. Will not be returning again.

This chip shop is normally very good! Lately since having the new staff it's going down hill the girl that serves is rude and also touches fish and other food products as well as money without washing her hands and she's always on her phone behind the counter, on this visit the chips looked bad, like a bad bunch of potatoes won't be back in a hurry

It's a chippy, yes? It sells fish and chips, yes? One can 'eat in' as with so many other places. It doesn't claim to be a restaurant - it has no faffy airs and graces - just serviceable tables and chairs but just how many other chippy places cook fresh to order, have friendly chat and banter and then serve a WHOPPING GREAT portion (not swimming in grease) accompanied by a nice little side salad on the marvellously sized plate? Not many, but this brilliant lil shop does. And with aplomb. And a smile.

Our office orders lunch from here a few times and we get a mixture of food including fish and chips, pizza, sauces and fish cakes. We found the portions sizes were huge which is great value for money! Food is good quality which is what you expect from a chip shop. They deliver too which is a bonus. We would order from here again.

I ordered a takeaway from here which included a battered sausage, cheesy chips, normal chips a burger and gravy.

We travelled from Lancashire to Portsmouth for the ferry to France. Between the fog, thecongested M6 and poor services on the A34 we did not get to stop to eat. We found Rock Salt just a few minutes from the ferry port.

I have never visited this take away but had delivery from just eat and i have to say, the fish is good...huge..and the chips also good but beware be hungry or order a regular fried between 2, you really will be satisfied, there portions are generous which is wonderful and seemingly a thin g of the past

The chips are nice and crispy and the fish is amazing. Its based on London Road in Portsmouth more of a take away than a restaurant but its does have a few tables to sit and enjoy your lovely meal. I would defiantly recommend this to everyone.

The owner of this place has worked hard to build up his business. He has a passion for producing great quality food at a competitive price. Highly recommended!

Not located in the best part of Portsmouth and more a takeaway with three tables but the fish and chips are truly outstanding. We come from near Whitby in North Yorkshire known for its fish and chips but they don't beat Rock Salt .... Sorry Trenchers

At first we asked for 'take away' but then changed our mind and asked if we could 'sit in' instead - no problem. We had to wait a few minutes but all cooked fresh and served with a smile and even a little salad. The large cod and chips for £6 was superb - fish in crispy golden batter, very good size, thick and flaky, and chips piping hot and freshly cooked. We stopped off en-route to the ferry for Spain and hopefully will return soon.

This is a great fish and chip shop in North End portsmouth. We go almost every week. The fish is very good and a good size and a small chips is more than enough for two people. The owner is a fantastic bloke always happy and chearfull, and knows who you are and what your regular order is. The price is great value and it is always clean and tidy. I will continue to go here on a regular basis. well worth a visit.

Out searching for fish n chips on a bank holiday monday afternoon, Rock Salt was a welcome sight as every other chippy - including my usual - was closed. Was greeted by a warm welcome from the proprietor, who delivered a freshly cooked double cod & chips. Portion size was very generous indeed, and the quality was good. I was a few pennies short and so offered card payment, to which thereply was a cheerful 'not to worry, you can give it to me next time!'. Would certainly recommend as one of Portsmouth's best chippies!

Don't walk by this chippy pop in have a cup of tea and some chips and fish and talk to Pete who is so friendly and chatty, cheers your day right up, we regularly pop in once a week during our shopping trip in Northend my wife has fish cakes and a pickled egg and I will have chips with gravy, extremely generous portions and you will never leave ther hungry...

Amazeballs, no other word for it. You can tell the fish is fresh and unlike some restaurants in the area the oil is fresh too. Lovely staff, I'm quite fussy about my food but they couldn't do enough to help.

The food is just amazing! We stopped by for a fish and chips and the experience was really good! I go there every week! The fish is really fresh and juicy and the chips are really good and tasty! The staff is really nice and friendly! The prices are really good for the size of the meals you get. I would strongly recommend this place in Portsmouth!
