Riverview Kitchen in County Durham

Me and my friends love Riverview, it's very quickly become our go to! The food never misses, the cafe is so cute and the service is fantastic. We were served by Charlotte today and she was so lovely, brilliant customer service and really made our visit x

This is a place not to be missed if you are passing through Durham. I go there to eat pancakes every time I visit the city. In addition to a soothing and pleasant setting, the cuisine is delicious. I particularly recommend their pancakes. The dough is extremely successful: the pancakes have a perfect texture. Although the portions are large, they are not difficult to finish. The toppings are also delicious. Go for it, you won't be disappointed!

Awesome pancakes, bigger than you'd imagine!

This place is efficient and the coffee is really good. The pancakes are massive, so 2 will do for most people. 2 large lattes, 1 teacake, and 1 order of pancakes was almost 24 quid. It was a bit expensive to visit often but as a treat its great - and dog friendly!

Visited with my son both had the full English! Amazing food!

Very busy on a Thursday but people were being served very quickly. Food was really nice and not too expensive. Nice location too 😊

The BEST burger I have ever had!!

Amazing breakfasts and a great view of the river. My kids (10, 8) were delighted but ultimately defeated by the thick American pancakes. The salmon, avocado and poached egg was extremely tasty and filling.

2nd time for breakfast. Very enjoyable, will definitely be back.

Great brunch spot overall with delicious pancakes. My favourite one is the banoffee pancakes but I'd recommend all the pancakes with fruit. Amazing views and dog-friendly as well so loads of dogs to boost your happiness. Can be quite crowded and queues are expected on weekends or sunny days but it moves very quickly so it's not a huge issue. Fair prices for the portions. No compulsory service charge which is a bonus.

Lovely little place with friendly service and lovely food.

I use this place religiously and it's glorious, normally 110%. Good food, quality ambience and just generally all around amazing. Today however fell way short of the mark. Arrived as usual on my own for breakfast, it appears there has been a slight reshuffle of layout. When showed to my table I politely asked if i could sit near the window, which is normal and there were many free spaces. I was flatly told no, because I'm alone and those tables are for more people. I wouldn't normally mind, but the place was scarcely half full. If it was rammed I would fully appreciate the declined request. Instead I was placed in what felt like a makeshift table cramped with customers in front and behind me , needlessly . I apologise if this feels a little extreme but I felt let down and needed to voice my concern

We go to the riverview kitchen quite often. Amazing foor for both Breakfast and Lunch. Service is second to none. Atmosphere today around 2 o'clock on a Saturday was buzzing which was great. Can't recommend this place enough!!!

We went for breakfast today 24/2/2024 at the Riverside Cafe . I have an allergy to Onions . I asked the waiting staff if there was any onions in the Pork Sausage . I was categorically told there wasn’t any onion in the sausage . I have now been bent double and extremely ill since lunchtime . I was clearly given an opinion and not fact as no checks were made . I will be speaking to Durham CC on Monday morning to take this matter further .

Food was lovely but it was so busy. It was chaotic and the most stressful eating out experience I have ever had. The staff were friendly but really keen we had literally just sat down and they were asking for our order we hadn't even had chance to pick the menu up. As soon as my knife and fork touched my plate after I had finished eating my plate was taken straight off the table. Everything felt really rushed. Such a shame as the food was worth another visit but I doubt I would return.

We were so happy with the views and the friendly welcome. Food arrived promptly and was beautiful.. I had a vegan breakfast and my husband had a traditional breakfast and we also shared some Pancakes with blueberries and syrup. Highly recommended great food and service will be back soon!

Amazing - gorgeous vegan breakfast and berry smoothie, both at a very reasonable price. My friend and I both enjoyed thoroughly. The staff were super helpful and we had a nice window seat too. Will definitely come back!!

Surprisingly, we had a great time in Durham, even with the rain. After we explored the cathedral up the hill, we stumbled upon this charming cafe along the river. Nestled by the window, we enjoyed a splendid view of the river - a truly relaxing and delightful experience. Plus, the food was absolutely banging.

Mâncarea a fost acceptabilă, bună, dar nu extraordinară. Chelnerii cam neatenți: nouă au uitat să ne ia comanda iar prietenii noștri au așteptat enorm după supă și meniurile de copii. Ca și ambianta a fost foarte gălăgios si frig. Mesele arată ok, dar scaunele sunt o gluma proasta. Ca și varietate veniți doar dacă căutați sandvișuri pentru ca mâncare adevărată, gătită sau grătar nu există. Deserturi mediocre și cafea acceptabilă. Noi sigur nu vom reveni.

Great good and atmosphere, I love the river view there, one of the best spot in town!! The food there is quite good, but not the top, it is more like a space for chatting and resting instead of for great food. Service is also great, welcoming and fast.

Delicious food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with wonderful views of the river. The pancakes are absolutely delicious 😋. Very impressed with the goats cheese toasty too as had plenty of cheese on it. We would highly recommend a visit and will certainly return.

Beautiful breakfast in a stunning location

Like taking visitors here as it’s a great spot for a glorious view of the Tyne . The chilli jam in the halloumi burger took it to a new level I must say. Just beware it gets extremely busy on weekends.

Second time at Riverview Kitchen, and their pancakes remain the top dessert choice! Tried a cake trey, only enjoyed the brownie as the others were overly sweet. Opted for two slices of chocolate and strawberry pancakes at £8, a bit steep for two slices, but honestly, they're the best I've had! Definitely worth the price. Plus, the added bonus of a great view ensures you'll thoroughly enjoy your time here!

Popped in for breakfast during a walk along the Riverside. Lovely place, beautiful position on the riverside and the scrambled eggs were VERY good. Definitely be back soon

Perfect date spot in Durham that is also dog friendly with a small dog menu!

Lovely café - atmospheric with a beautiful location. The only thing that lets it down for me is how uncomfortable the owner (tall, older guy) made me feel about being vegan. Upon asking if they had vegan pancakes, I was given a lecture on how it’s not a healthy diet and was suggested to just have the ‘normal’ ones. This was a while back but it really upset me - why cater to vegans with other options on your menu if you so think this way?

i had an amazing experience here at riverview kitchen for dessert. i came here to treat myself to the oreo brownie deluxe pancakes and they were so worth it. perfect amount of nutellla to coat pancakes in, pancakes were good but could have been lighter and fluffier. cream was light and not too sweet. presentation was amazing. as the name suggests, i was sat next to the river which just enhanced my experience. definitely worth £8!

Tasty and reasonably priced brunch with a river view! A large range of brunch items with a delicious cake counter too. I had an avocado smoothie with a scone but spoilt for choice. Inside and outside seating available. Go up to the till to pay.

Lovely breakfast, lovely location and super helpful staff.

Very busy Sunday afternoon. The entrance suffers from being close to riverbanks so after days of heavy rainfall it was quite muddy. Also down some dark scruffy steps so not looking great. Not sure the cafe is in control of that though. However, make the journey, it is worthwhile. Lovely views, warm interior, friendly staff and a great menu different to the usual panini/ toastie offerings in cafes. Dog friendly! Hard to find menu online but we did see some old photos, perhaps this could be rectified on the Facebook page with a pinned entry.

Great cafe, very lively and busy with a great selection of cakes, scones, sarnies and some nice looking burgers too! Staff were great and really helpful and friendly. Great place for lunch/ brunch.

What a little gem. We were staying in Durham and looking for a dog friendly breakfast. It’s great. Lovely menu choice and quality food. We got a table quickly despite the rain. Highly recommended.

Really good breakfast pancakes. Went 4 stack but the 2 stack would have also filled that 'hunger hole'. We got here early at 9:30am having looked at other reviews and we got a great table overlooking the river. It became much busier from 10am onwards. Great food, good coffee and clean facilities. After queuing for about 30 minutes we got a table. We had a bit of a wait to get a menu which was fine and then we ordered and the food and drinks came quickly. The first latte we had wasn’t warm but the second we ordered was ok. Think this place is a bit overrated to be honest. Staff were all friendly. Food wasn’t great, burnt bacon and overdone toast for the eggs benedict and the pancake stack was nice.

Amazing food and great service. Places like this could, and do just rely on their location to make money - but it's obvious The Riverview team strive for great service and food. Will be back.

Visited twice during our weekend break. Had breakfast & then lunch another day. All good excellent & service very good. Queued outside for a bit but moved quickly and staff good at managing this. Lovely location as well & reasonable priced.

Riverside dining off the busy high street, serving all day meals. Sat outside for lunch, multiple inside dining rooms, had the Panko coated chicken salad, the asian dressing though tasted balsamic vinegary was overpowering and would be better on the side. Glass of wine was served as a single small wine bottle. Friendly staff. Downhill incline walk to riverside.

Food is really good, shame about the staff, violently rude. First didn’t give me any cutlery, then walked over and handed us the bill and asked if we could pay now and forced us out the door. Clearly not allowed to sit and enjoy the view at RiverVIEW kitchen. Also pretty steep prices, £10 for pancakes? Won’t be going back.

Been here a few times now and it’s always perfect. Even tho they’re always full, you never wait for food and drinks. Tables cleared immediately and great service. Food is first class, great quality produce. Perfect!

Down a little side street off Silver Street with a few tables outside this is a lovely café. We sat outside overlooking the river and felt like we were on holiday! We ordered a goats cheese and onion chutney toastie and sweet potato chips between us with tea for him and a gorgeous avo smoothie for me. Delicious 🤤Staff were friendly and meal arrived within minutes. Not the cheapest at around £25 with a discretionary 5%tip. Dog friendly too. Daz particularly liked his toilet see picture!!🤣

A lovely independent cafe in a pretty spot on the banks of the river in Durham. We only had tea and cake but they were excellent and the staff very friendly.

We love visiting Riverview Cafe - the staff are very friendly, the menu’s extensive, and the food and drinks are beautiful. I chose the vegetarian wrap and didn’t want the halloumi, so they happily substituted it for vegetarian sausage at no extra cost. The Biscoff shakes were also amazing. I can’t recommend it enough.

Staff were very friendly and helpful, however I have been regularly coming to Riverview for two years now and the price increase has been extortionate. £5 for a vanilla iced latte is more expensive than Starbucks, not to mention the milkshakes and smoothies costing even more! That being said, the Asian sticky chicken wrap was lovely, especially the pickled cucumber. I do agree with previous reviews about the crumbley pancakes.

Absolutely loved this place on our visit to Durham that we went there twice (once for breakfast and lunch). The staff were so lovely and attentive but the food was delicious and reasonably priced compared to other cafés.

Clearly a can of heinz minestrone in the microwave and a slice of hovis multi-grain. Not really what was pitched on the menu and at £7. Mentioned to the staff but got blanked which felt me feeling a little sad actually... Milkshake was alright. Lots of wasps inside too.

Apart from the amazing view of the river, this comfortable, friendly cafe serves wonderful, plentiful, fresh food and lovely drinks. The desserts looked incredible but we were all too full! Definitely one to revisit and work through more of the menu.

Unfortunately food was very disappointing, poached eggs were not freshly made. They had citrusy taste and they were unpleasant. Presentation of food and location 10 of 10, but as food sadly let it down.

When I went they made homemade pancakes and their cakes were also actually homemade. Had the berry pancakes, was excellent. Staff were nice also. Very nice place to go after a walk at the cathedral, with good atmosphere

Good view of the riverside. Food tastes good and the price are reasonable. Love the vibes. The biggest problem is the service, the waitress kept pushing us to place the order as soon as possible, asking if we are ready to order for about every 3mins and at least 4 times. Very annoying.

Location was nice and staff very lovely, but the food was overpriced and didn't meet our expectations. Our poached eggs were rubbery and overcooked and food was generally not very well seasoned. It's a shame because it was highly recommended.

Having lived near to Durham most of my life I'm sad that I have only just discovered this place. Popping to Durham yesterday we decided to go for a walk along the river and my children decided they were hungry just as we approached the Riverside Kitchen. We opted to sit outside as it was nice weather so cannot comment on the inside but the seating outside was comfortable and despite being busy we were seated straight away. The menu, breakfast due to the time, was varied. My daughter ordered the sausage stottie which had 3 large Sausages in, and a fruit smoothie which was fresh and very tasty. I ordered the breakfast stottie and a diet coke. The sandwich was very nice. My husband ordered the smoked salmon, Avocado and poached eggs on sourdough, he was very happy and get it a 9/10. A cappuccino also. My youngest ordered the vegitarian breakfast which was very substantial, she ate most of it and was helped with the parts she couldn't finish! She ordered a fentimens raspberry which she really enjoyed. Including the 10% tip we left the bill came to £62. Worth it for the quality of food. The staff were quick to take our order and very helpful After a walk, and a trip to the park when asked the children both said the brunch was their favorite part of the day. We will definitely be back.

Great spot and very varied menu. Not too busy when we called and promptly seated and table cleared and cleaned.

Excellent service and food overall. Hot drinks could have done with being hotter as they were only luke warm (even when we asked for a couple of them to be heated up). Also, pirti9n sizes of the full English breakfast were not as generous as they could have been, i.e only 1 rasher of bacon, 1 small piece of toast and 1 mushroom. Quality was good, but could have done with a little more of it!
