Claimed it closed at 6pm. Perfect, we thought, as we had a dinner booking next door at 6. We arrived at 5.40 and ordered 3 coffees. At 5.45 they unceremoniously threw us out as they were closing. No 5-minute warning, just LEAVE. Hadn't even been able to start the coffee as it was too hot. Other customers received the same treatment. If you close at 5.45, say you close at 5.45. Don't lie and say you close at 6.

I wanted a snack before the concert I had come to see, and ordered a ham hock and cheese toastie. I really wish I hadn't. It was made with the cheapest white bread there is - so glutinous that it stuck to my teeth. The toastie was barely half full, with dry shredded pieces of ham, and cheese I could barely taste. It cost £6, and I felt cheated that I had paid that much for what was effectively two slices of white toast. The tables were dirty, and full of other people's abandoned meals. I love the Royal Festival Hall, and often go to concerts there. But I won't ever eat again at the Riverside Cafe. Shame ... the cafe overlooks the river, and could be glorious. What a missed opportunity.

On family trip out to London we stopped for lunch, the food was good but the people serving were so unpleasant it spoilt experience. The lady that served me said about 2 words despite me having a question, she looked fed up and off putting, another lady was the same too. Shame, would not go back. :(

Up in town for a family day out we were looking for somewhere that wasn't till crowded. Came across the Riverside Terrace cafe and wished we hadn't. Stood in line and waited almost ten minute while the server made someone a coffee at snail's pace. Good choices were extremely limited, ie non-existent. There were a few small sandwiches and wraps, but one of our party complained that the bread was stale. The pizza slices looked interesting, but when I bit into mine I realised there was no pizza made, just bread, and it was stale. All that for a £6 slice! The two serving staff appeared not to have the benefit of the power of speech, which made the experience more unpleasant. I'd rather be ripped off at one of the tourist burger stalks than eat this muck again. Drinks are served from a kiosk out on the terrace. Much better and the ale was lovely, but not cheap.

The owners / HMG have just spent zillions refurbishing this landmark complex. What about this Cafe? Glorious position, so disappointing. After a long day walking the streets and enjoying Tate Modern it was a convenient place to collapse before dinner @ Brasserie Blanc. I queued for ages to be served despite at least 7 staff behind the counter / running the kitchen. The Pain au Raison was delicious and appeared to be fresh - at 3.00pm. But the Coffee, a Cortado, was really disappointing. Both served in cardboard - this isn't a roadside 'greasy spoon'. The coffee was far too hot - almost Tea temperature! Coffee made too hot ruins the flavour - irrespective of the quality of the beans you start off with. SOOOO crowded. I could not find a table so just managed a Chair by the window. Rummaged around for a second one when my wife joined me. Disappointing. Hayling Seagoon

I don't normally write reviews and if I make the effort it's usually because I want to leave positive comments, so this is a first for me. I was so pleased to be back at the Royal Festival Hall and looked forward to coffee and a snack pre concert. Sadly the cafe is not run by the same people from before the pandemic. My husband and I have been three or four times now and we have decided to just buy coffee from now on because the food was so awful. Last time I bought a Sliced Plum Crumble Slice. It wasn't quite cooked enough and it tasted terrible. I had one bite and threw the rest away. The staff are pleasant enough but the service is much slower than in the past and it's not obvious why because it's not always super busy when we have been there. What a disappointment.

Visited the cafe indoors and counted six staff but so, so slow. The managers must be losing money because I cannot be the only customer who just gave up. There are two tills and one staff member at each but that leaves just four staff to supply the orders. That would not matter if the staff had any sense of urgency. I thought, I am not going to commit money and then have to wait twenty minutes for a pizza slice to be picked and heated. At one point a staff member came out to explain the queuing system...why not have simple signage? Sadly there is no zero rating available

Some friends and I had some drinks at Riverside Terrace Cafe on a Tuesday evening. It was a sunny day so we were able to enjoy our drinks outside. The cafe was very busy but we managed to get a table, it's a lovely setting next to the river. There's a lot of indoor seating for when the weather isn't so nice as well. Prices were a bit expensive but perhaps you're paying for the location. Service was good.

Sorry to say that I did not enjoy the cold noodle salad (be warned; it’s full of raw onions) and the pizza slices were luke warm and rather overpriced. I’m also a bit despairing at the use of disposable containers and did not see where to recycle them. If you walk outside the building around the corner there are numerous and reasonably priced street food stalls - wish I’d done that first!

This South Bank Centre eaterie is the pits. The broccoli & cauliflower cheese dish was so bad I threw it away after one bite. Tasteless gunk which defies description. The usual offerings are stale, unnapetising and unchanging - tuna or cheese sandwiches, super expensive soft drinks, over - salted soups. The only light is the centre itself. Over looking the Thames - great location !

Perfect place really for a café. Right on the South Bank with views of the river. A decent cuppa, decent size (hard to find in London!) and nice food too. I've docked a star because all the drinks are served in disposable cups, which is fine I guess, but re-usable ones would be a bit more friendly to the environment.

. Having gone low Carb since my last visit the Free Range Chicken salad at £5.75 was exactly what I needed. Its presentation belied the contents which were good quality and surprisingly filling. Accompanied by a 330ml bottle of Diet Coke (£2.25) this was just what I needed for a quick pit stop. Perhaps unusually for October I could this time sit in the sun overlooking the Thames. What made this completely different was that built in to the Terrace Café was a live orchestra performing for BBC Radio 3. Brilliant. Where can one get such culture and lunch for a mere £8. Brilliant. I just wished I had left more than half an hour before racing off to Pall Mall for a meeting. I should not forget the excellent waiter/server who rushed off to find me ice for my coke. This continues to be a meeting point for a myriad of nationalities of all ages. This time I was not rushing as SW trains had delivered me to nearby Waterloo ahead of anticipated time. I found a window seat in prime position - despite being May there was a slightly sharp temperature that precluded the terrace option - next time. I consumed my usual sandwich as water taxis fought the Thames' tide, planes stacked overhead circling Heathrow and the Post Office Tower peeked between the older classic architecture. Refreshed it was on to a meeting across the stylish footbridge to Charing Cross. This place is still a great magnet in a perfect position.

Well, this WAS a pleasant surprise! Gone (apparently) is the old menu and grumpy staff who gave the impression they were doing you a whole favour to serve you - and in comes a much improved canteen style menu offering (what I had) a terrific vegetable and barley soup with a chunky piece of sourdough (and butter portion) at £4.50. This choice apparently varies and everything is much more reasonably priced. Compared to the awful offerings next door at the BFI, you're much better off opting for this place; possibly even more so than the concessions downstairs since you get that fabulous view! The previous caterring was 'ambitiously priced' and much less inspired than now! When (if?) the weather improves, you can sit outside and watch the river and people go by. Ideal for a lunch stop. I like the fact you can stay all day to chat with friends and/or family without any pressure from staff, except efficient clean-up service. So a whole London lunch for £6.75 - beat that! The sandwich was defined by the fresh bread which is baked every day. The plum chutney went perfectly with thr cheddar cheese. Had pulled pork burger and salad instead of fries. It was nice enough and the pulled pork was yummy, and had a nice warm kick to it, but don't bother ordering the salad in be hope you'll be eating more healthily, have the fries instead, because the salad comes in a weeny bowl, and is basically a few bits of rocket and other leaves - a real let down. Also, the coleslaw was pretty tasteless to be honest, more vinegary than creamy. My partner said his veggie beanburger was nice, and his fries were good. Service was all right, slow for the drinks, better for the food. The waiting staff seemed to either spend their time hanging around and chatting, but they were, paradoxically, over-attentive at times. My experience was that the place was too expensive for what we got, and okay but by no means great.

The food I love the burger it is thick and tastes of angus beef and nothing else, comes with fries. There are some good vegatarian options. For a starter try the pint of sausage rolls or cream cheese with chives. For desert, if you have room, both the house cheesecake and the ice cream and chocolate chunks are to be recommended. My wife claims the chocolate chunks are to die for. Coffee is good and there are a selection of wines at very resonable prices (for London). Service is fast and friendly and the place is very clean. Teas, coffees and cakes on the South Bank. This used to feel a bit special because of the good coffee, cakes and sandwiches, but over the last decade (or maybe more) it's become a bit me-too; outlets like Starbucks do all this and more. Service is friendly (although it's self-service so I haven't given them a big rating because they have no scope to gain more) and the coffee still good but in that setting, at one of London's leading cultural centres, you'd hope for a bit more adventure. Nothing actually wrong with it and there's plenty of seating inside and out, but drinks from paper cups in a venue like this (as other commentators have pointed out) are a bit same-old same-old.

Stopped here today and thankfully queue was not too long. The 'stew' I had tasted fab- lemongrass and chicken but really it was more of a soup and served as such with a chunk of bread so I am not sure why they term it a stew. For a quick sandwich or soup/ stew thing this is as good as you will find in London but I did baulk at paying £2.50 for a brownie. That is trying it on.I guess they try to make up for decent prices on the basics by ratcheting up the sweet things. That said, if you want a tea or coffee while on the way to somewhere else this is a good place to stop, especially if you have kids. Surely in one of the capital's great concert venues we could be served with decent crockery and utensils with our food and beverages. We did enjoy a snack of tuna mayo, crisps and green and breakfast tea but this was in spite of the paper crockery. Also the queuing system is a little strange whereby apparently a customer is to take sandwiches from refrigerated racks either side of the till and then queue to pay and ask for further items such as hot drinks and soup.

After a walk along the River the very large cafe, restaurant and wine bar is a good find, there is plenty of seating inside and out. They make a selection of cocktails as well as the usual coffees, teas and soft drinks as well as various cakes.

I was looking for a cheap lunch when going on to a concert on the South Bank. This area is full of chains and I wanted something cheap and a bit original so tried the Riverside Cafe in the Royal Festival Hall. The menu for hot food was short - two soups, a hot sandwich and a stew but the food was fantastic. A roast pork sandwich with little "crisps" of port crackling, potato and sorrel soup, a lamb curry for the stew. The soup and stew served with a chunk of delicious brown bread. It was wholesome and original and really good value. You can take to food up to one of the balconies overlooking the thames and have that wonderful view over the Thames.

The Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank has a couple of different restaurants and cafe's. The Riverside Terrace Cafe is on the main level. They do sandwiches, soups and stews. Often they have deals on such as a bowl of stew, bread and a drink for £5. It is self service and everything is served in disposable containers so it is not a fancy place but it is is good for a quick lunch.

What a shame , a great little bar tucked away by Waterloo station . I’ve been coming here for years , but the service has absolutely nosedived. It’s service with a grudge. I stood in the little bar at the front waiting to be served, the male server was clearly unhappy I didn’t walk into the other room to be served , it was 2.55 on a Saturday and he was unhappy as he has to close down the bar for 5.00pm - welcome to the hole in the wall. If you don’t serve in that bar - put a sign up. Lots of people walked in , waited and left. He had time to retire to the kitchen to chat and play on his phone. Really sad to write a review like this because it should be a welcoming and hidden gem

Have been a regular at the tankard for years as an IWM employee. Awful experience this evening, having booked a space for 20 weeks ago (and confirmed) to be told on arrival we had just a small table. The area we were shoved out of then occupied by dinner guests who caused a huge fuss by us being ‘in the way’ and upset several of our party. Manager (?) couldn’t care less and referred me to ‘bookings office in Scotland’! Dreadful treatment for long time paying patrons. Will be taking our business elsewhere.
