Used to be excellent- no longer the case. Food was ok, the service was on a par with Basil Fawlty crossed with Julie Walters in the ‘2 Soups’ comedy sketch. We had booked a table for 4 on Saturday evening. We were taken to our table to find a different waitress had just taken 2 other people to it. They were told to move somewhere else by the guy showing us to the table. Everything was done properly with space between tables although the place was quite empty anyway. We placed our order with the waitress, who didn’t seem very competent. I questioned whether they had taken every order on the table. We checked and they said yes but then 15 minutes later came over to say they only had orders for 3 main courses. It took 3 attempts to get a wine list and 5 attempts to get some water. The waitress brought out the starters and said ‘I’m not sure what they are, but here you go’. A little training might be worthwhile. At some point a waitress brought us out 2 main courses of pork chops. We hadn’t ordered those so sent them away. The main course didn’t arrive for about an hour by which point they had apologised that they had forgotten us and offered free deserts on the house. After waiting ages for the plates to be cleared from the table and asking for the desert menu we gave up and went to the desk to pay as we thought it would take ages for them to bring it to the table. That in turn was eventful, they tried to give us the wrong bill for 2 different tables. In the end we just agreed to a bill that resembled some of the food we had eaten, paid and left. Total incompetence from start to finish, but well worth it if you want free table side entertainment.

We called on spec hoping to get a table for Sunday lunch. We walked through reception and the bar which were both deserted and into the large restaurant with masses of tables and about six diners. Eventually managed to find someone to speak to and asked if we could have a table for lunch. She was seemed very disinterested and unsure of what was going on but eventually said they were fully booked. Hope everyone turned up to fill the many empty tables, especially as we were turned away! Wouldn't return.

I would have to agree with many other reviews and agree the food is superb. Yet, I am sad to say that we shall not be returning in the immidiate future after the overall impression. I have never given any establishment a bad review And I have to say the food is lovely and I cannot complain one bit about that. Well done chef.Well done owners. But upon being witness to the information that the manager who must be nearing on 60 years of age to be in a relationship with a young girl in school that works for him. Maybe sixteen years of age at the most I find this highly unprofessional and somewhat disturbing. We looked forward to visiting after passing the place for many years and felt extremely uncomfortable. Do not ruin what could be a good thing with bad morals and behaviours that will lead to your local people being uncomfortable when eating at this great location. We do not like to put something so negative on what is a nice place. It made my husband very annoyed last week.An evening out and eating fabulous food should not leave that impression on its visitors. Poor taste

We visited our daughter in Abergavenny last Sunday and took her and our three Granchildren to lunch It was something very special. Excellent food The Roast Beef and Pork was exceptional. The children had roast chicken and all ate very large portions. Fresh Veg and proper Yorkshire Puddings was the icing on the cake Lovely views over the river and valley from the Dining room When we are next in Abergavenny this restaurant will be first on the list

My wife and I were intent on returning to this restaurant where we had enjoyed a wonderful evening meal to celebrate our engagement back in 2016. We had heard that it was under new ownership and wanted to discover if the ambience and quality had changed significantly as a result. We were pleasantly surprised. There are little or no alterations to the restaurant; the general layout has remained as it was in 2016. Through the small unmanned reception area you enter the lounge, with the bar ahead of you and a space filled with comfortable seating. You can usallly head straight into the dining area or, if you prefer, enjoy drinks in tbe relaxed atmosphere of the lounge. The real plus point at this venue is the unique design and position of the restaurant. The large propeller fans that dominate the ceiling area evokes whimsical associations- Humphrey Bogart next to his piano man in Casablanca for example. Then, there's the smashing view over the river Usk through the large windows that dominate one side of the room. The tables are well spaced out and the overall ambience is of a space more often found in a 5 star hotel. We chose the early bird menu (5-7 pm). This provides exceptional value, so if you can go earlier so much the better. We weren't hurried into ordering, which is always good.We opted for the three courses on offer, starting with the tasty soup of the day which was delivered quickly by a young lady with a delightful smile. In fact, all service was given with a pleasing comittment to positive customer engagement. The early bird menu gave 7 choices of mains with a reasonable degree of difference. Lizzie and I opted for the salmon and cod fish pie which was accompanied by gorgeous creamed leeks and herb salad. The presentation was good and the wait between courses timed just right. We felt rather full after the mains and asked for a slight delay before the desserts were served. This request was met with courtesy; genuine friendliness always augments the dining out experience. For pudding I had the pear frangipan tart and Lizzie the ice cream....there were 3 other choices. When one considers the modest outlay for the three courses, the quality and presentation were remarkable. Overall, a lovely and memorable dining experience.

Visiting friends nearby who recommended the Llanwenarth hotel and restaurant and brought us here over the weekend. The view from the restaurant was superb, as was the meal and service. Brilliant value too at £19.90 for 3 courses. What stood out for me was that after I ordered the salmon without the crayfish beurre blanc, the waitress came out to say that the kitchen had said that I could have the sauce if I wished because they could make it without the crayfish. A very nice example of attention to detail I thought, which I was very impressed by. The salmon itself was beautifully cooked, nice and flaky, with crispy skin. My girlfriend normally doesn't eat the skin, but even she loved it on this occasion. Would be happy to return here when next in the area.

We did not stay at the hotel: only visited the Riverside Restaurant, the views from which were lovely. The restaurant was light and airy with one side completely glass, overlooking the river Usk in the valley below and the hills of the Brecon Beacons beyond. The tables were well spaced with plenty of room between them. We were there early around 1730 and had a table in the window. There is an early bird menu served between 1700 - 1900 hours costing £13.95 for two courses and £15.95 for three courses - very good value. There were several varied starters and main courses to choose from - we did not make dessert! Portion size was good, the food hot and very tasty; the venison pate starter was particularly good. We were served by the owner who was friendly, helpful and chatty. The bar area, through which the restaurant is accessed was also very pleasant and welcoming.

Whilst staying at the llanwenarth hotel we chose the full cooked breakfast, which was plentiful and tastey, the owner chef cooks it well.only downside was for me no prunes or grapefruit, but enough fresh apples, bananas etc.they obviously cut down on staff as you are left to get your own coffee and make your tea in your cup,not a problem when you realise this. The views more than make up for it.toast would benefit from being on thicker bread and arranged in toast racks so it does not go soft

18 of us, plus 2 small children, for an early evening celebratory dinner. The food was excellent, particularly the lamb, and the atmosphere was friendly. The restaurant has lovely views as it sits up on the bank of the Usk within the Brecon Beacons National Park

The people here were very friendly and, on the whole, the place is not bad to eat in or the hotel to stay at. They are a bit fixed on when you can have dinner so we did not want to eat at 7pm on a Sunday so had to go out as there was no other alternative at the hotel. Lovely views across the river and good location.

Fabulous, tasty food - beautifully presented. The veal in mushroom sauce is delicious and malteser cheesecake is to die for. Fish is first class too. Friendly service and nothing is too much trouble for them. Costs very reasonable. This place is a hidden gem. One of those places you want to keep secret!

Very pleased with the fact as a veggie I was catered for last minute, and the meal itself was generous and extremely tasty. Yorkshire puds among the best I've tasted and the desserts were beautifully presented and equally as large.

I always come here with friends or family, and the food is always exceptional, and the staff very attentive. The a la carte menu is extensive with plenty of delicious options. The evening flyer menu is also great value for money, and offers plenty of choice, this is what I normally go for, as it is always different, and there's always something I fancy on offer. Will definitely come back again and again

Upon arrival we were greeted by what we assume to be the manageress, and we're made very welcome , we sat by a roaring fire while we had drinks and chose our order.a waitress then brought us through to the restaurant and placed us at our table with an amazing view of the river Usk, we were then given complimentary nachos and dip while our starters were being made,we were surprised at how quickly each course came out, although this did not effect the quality what so ever. The presentation and quality of the food was amazing for the price all in all we will definitely be back and would recommend anyone to try this restaurant.

Took my sales team here for lunch, 10 of us in total. The food is incredible and you certainly won’t go hungry. Everyone at the pub is friendly and can’t do enough for you. Feels like a good old fashioned boozer set in an amazing position on the Wye. Everyone only had good things to say about the place. Steak is a specialty here. No hesitation in recommending the Rose and Crown. Thanks all who looked after us that day.

Lovely Irish landlady was extremely accommodating to me & my two boys.. Service was how service used to be before the big pub chains took over everything… Food was brilliant.. Had to have the bread pudding as haven’t had it since I was a kid.. took me right back! Definitely recommend and will return 👌🏼
