Excellent cafe, great selection of hot and cold food and cakes, great service . Added bonus is a great view of the bird feeder which attracts many different species. Unfortunately this cafe has not been open during covid, and is now closed for refurbishment so don't know when business will be resumed.

You may know this place as the Bird Cafe because of its bird tables outside the cafe windows. It’s on the road between Hathersage and Bamford. The cafe has reopened after lockdown Friday, Saturday and Sunday atm. By chance we were going past on a Friday. We had a good cup of tea and some great cake but according to the waitresses, we missed out on the sparrow hawk action.

An excellent place to not only eat and shop for both grocery and plants alike you can sit and watch the wild birds and squirrels feed from the feeder pots hung above the large bird table the other side of the cafe window overlooking the river and countryside .. Vegan options on menu delicious food....clean... reasonable prices and friendly staff We discovered this place about 6 years ago and over the years we have visited frequently taking both family and friends... affectionately know as the bird cafe amongst us all... I would highly recommend this outlet however this report might work to our detriment.... If it gets anymore popular than it is we might struggle to get a table when we next visit.... Lol..(which will be tomorrow 29/1/20 with friends) Whilst this place is a hours drive from our place of residence its well worth the journey for the experience.

After having gone past this lots of times over the years I thought I’d drop in and see if it’s any good. The answer is no. Food is overpriced. Expect to pay £6.50 for a sandwich and £8.50 for a pie. The pie does come with mash but it takes about half an hour to reheat somehow and the mash is lumpy and under seasoned. Nice to see the birds and the bird feeders but just as the squirrels were robbing the birds blind, this cafe will do a similar number on you.

This is a lovely little cafe and exciting shop. Try to get a table, if possible by the window which overlooks a huge bird table with several feeders hanging over it. There are dozens of birds coming and going, and the occasional gymnastic squirrel too. Bird books and binoculars on hand for information. Lovely scones and cakes and interesting lunches. The shop is ideal for foodie gifts and you just have to buy something for yourself. A Deli of unusual things. A chocolate counter too. A great outing.

We have always enjoyed visiting this place and have recommended it to others but something has happened. The young staff were pleasant but not efficient, too busy discussing their lives than making a hot cup of coffee as requested. The food was still of a good standard but took a while despite there being more staff than customers! We thought that something had changed when the car park was empty on a Saturday. We hope that the standards will be reinstated and our next visit will restore our confidence.

Visit the herb centre cafe a fair bit and have enjoyed the food their (only eat the Tuna Melt) not sure if regular staff are on holiday or have left but it wasn't quite as good this time , was too cold where cheese not melted enough and cheese was a lot sparser than normal portions .Parnters' lunch wasn't as good as normal either sadly. However is always great to sit and watch the birds so may go back at some point hopefully the regular cook/chef will be back at the helm :)

Service slow and not attentive, cake good, coffee average. Really hope they improve again - the shop has been poor too recently maybe just needs a bit of energy and inspiration when spring comes? Preferring Hathersage Deli or The Anglers for now.

This venue is on our way home and every two or three months we stop for some lunch. We are always greeted pleasantly, but sometimes it is very busy and you have to decide whether to queue and wait or simply ‘pass’. However, we usually have the same dishes, having tried a variety before, and have never been disappointed. Being able to watch the birds and squirrels feeding, if you are close enough to the windows, is an added bonus but sitting in other locations for us isn’t a ‘deal breaker’. I think that the food is a little on the pricey side, but not enough to stop us going and thoroughly enjoying our meal. We tend to just have a ‘main’ each and can’t comment on the desserts as we have never had one... yet! It would be nice if they could expand the size of the seating area, just a little, so that the atmosphere wasn’t changed but that people had a little more ‘elbow room’!

The amazing industrial bird feed station which has been built out side a huge picture window is what makes this little cafe. Birds & squirrels come to feed & it's fascinating to watch. The prices are very expensive, it's good food but over priced for a little cafe & so if you're looking for good food close by The Anglers offer great food at a very reasonable price. However, this place is worth a visit for the birdie cafe

Very very noisy with constant clattering of pots - either going into/coming out of dishwasher - which makes conversation almost impossible if you’re sitting close by. Tables extremely close. Prawn sandwich served on huge doorstep slices of 'artisan' (brown!) bread - far too much bread and left most of it. Seems a policy of quantity over quality. Didn’t have dessert but a range of diabetes inducing cakes on display.

We visit the cafe regularly as it is lovely to watch the birds over a coffee. Last week was my Mum's 99th birthday and Riverside was where she wanted to go for a coffee. The manageress had reserved us a table for 5 by the window and we all sang Happy Birthday whilst she blew her candles out. Then they gave her a personalised birthday card and all the staff came out to see her. Made for happy memories. Many thanks.

I had a cheese ploughman's with three cheeses, warn crusty bread and a selection of pickles and salad which was very good indeed. Staff - family - are very friendly and informative. Have been meaning to visit the café for the last couple of years. Managed a visit today. The café is off the main road to Castleton, mixture of café, shop and small garden shop selling mainly herbs and a few flowers. All the herbs/flowers looked healthy and a good price. The shop was selling food which was a little bit different. Had tea and scones which was nice and well presented. Staff pleasant. I was quite surprised at how small it was, I think I expected a bigger place. It was rather squashed and must get very busy at peak times. A little bit pricey but that's what you pay for the privilege of seeing all the lovely birds coming close to the window to feed. Brilliant.

Read about this place in the local paper so we thought we'd pay a visit. The site is made up of a small garden centre which specialises in herbs (reasonably priced), a shop, and cafe which is where you can view the birds feeding through large windows. It's in a lovely location, right by the river and as such there is a lot of bird life - there are many feeders set up by the windows so you get a great close up view of birds coming to feed. They are obviously very used to people as they are not at all scared of the human faces looking at them from just 4 feet away. Our young daughter had fun identifying the many species using the bird books provided at each table. Species we saw included great tit, coal tit, chaffinch, robin, siskin ...pigeons too unfortunately! The cafe sells a good selection of cakes and teas/coffees which are excellent. My slice of cake was too big to finish! The shop is worth a browse, they sell many items you wouldn't find in your average store. The stock of herbs for sale was low but this is probably due to it being late summer - I would expect there to be more in spring but what they did have was good quality and priced reasonably. There is a decent size car park but I would say that the entrance sign needs to be a little more noticeable! (we went straight past it and had to do a U-turn)It's definitely worth a visit, recommended and we would go again.

We found this place on TripAdvisor and weren't disappointed as it lived up to the good reviews that it had.The place is linked to the garden centre and has a small outdoor seating area and a larger indoor area which overlooks the river and has lots of birds visiting the feeders just outside the windows. It also has a decent sized farm type shop attached selling everything from artisan flour to handmade chocolates. There is a good choice of food on the menu from sandwiches to salads, to full blown meals, alongside the traditional coffees and homemade cakes. The lamb and mint pie was excellent and stuffed full of meat. The only downside was that the staff didn't appear to do any clearing of the tables, which left most people to do it themselves. Visited with my husband and 3 year old son after it was recommended to us. It is on the main road going out of Hathersage so easy to find. The front of the place is dedicated to a small selection on plants and herbs with a farm shop area inside then right at the back to the right hand corner is the cafe. It only has 12 tables and most of them only had two chairs at them so people tended to borrow extra chairs from unused tables making it very higgledy-piggledy at times and not really wheelchair friendly. At one point there was a table available but it had no chairs at it ! The food was obviously home made, cooked to order and well presented. The food is not cheap though £8.50 for a jacket potato !! I had the trio of pates and my husband had a Bacon brie and cranberry baguette both of which were delicious but at £6.50 each you would expect them to be. The main on the blackboard states "children's menu available on request" when I asked for one the young man told me we do smaller portions of that menu. Ok but I have never heard of a 3 year old wanting a ploughmans lunch or a smoked salmon and cream cheese baguette ? The big draw to the cafe is the view. If you are luckily enough to sit at one of only 4 window tables then you get a wonderful view of the different birds that come to visit the various bird tables and the river at the bottom of the valley. The cafe supplies both binoculars and birdwatching books at these tables which is a lovely touch. With a little money spending on it and a little bit of reorganisation etc this place could be so much more, the cafe almost seems like an afterthought, a small addition stuck in a corner which is such a shame.

My boyfriend and I stopped here for a drink and cake after a lovely walk in the Peaks. There was a small selection of potted herb plants for sale outside, then a little deli and a cafe. The cafe has a lovely large window with a beautiful view and feeders outside with lots of birds feeding which was lovely to see. There were also bird books and binoculars to use which was a nice touch. The cafe wasn't particularly busy (there aren't too many tables and about a quarter of them were empty). I went to the counter to order and happily waited patiently while the staff were busy (too busy to even look up and say hello it seemed). Whilst waiting, I observed as the member of staff who appeared to be in charge prepared some tea for another table, then directed a young waitress to take it over to the table, before angrily shouting her back, tutting and rolling her eyes at the poor waitress. It turned out that the lady in charge hadn't poured the milk into the milk jug before sending it out, then realised when she had already sent it out, placing the blame on the young waitress who was clearly at no fault whatsoever. The waitress awkwardly tried to laugh it off, but was met with tuts and eye rolls. I thought this was an appalling way to treat a collegue. I then placed my order and returned to my table to enjoy the birds. The 'Mars bar slice' I had ordered (a chocolate Rice Krispie cake with Mars bar bits) was like eating cardboard, horribly stale and bland - the krispies were soft and there was no flavour at all. My boyfriend wasn't enthused with his treacle tart either. The only redeeming part was the (bottled) drink. Having observed the way the woman who appeared to be in charge spoke to her own collegue I didnt dare to send the food back or feedback on how stale and flavourless it was, not that anybody came over to ask how it was anyway. To summarise - The food was overpriced, poor quality and tasted like it had been sitting around for days, possibly even weeks. The staff ignored me and I then observed what I would go as far as calling workplace bullying. The birds on the other hand, were lovely!

There are herbs to buy, a deli with lots of jams, chutneys, chocolates, cheeses - I'm sure they'll be lovely but they are a bit pricey. The food and coffee is really good, a bit different and high quality. The staff are just lovely and chatty but very efficient too. Then there's the birds to watch through the window, and a great deli to browse around, excellent all round!

my daughter bought us a git voucher for here - before we have just driven past because it looks very unimpressive but I am so glad we have been inside. The man who was serving food couldn't have been more friendly or helpful if he tried. the menu was comprehensive and the shop so interesting. service wasn't quick but we weren't in a hurry and it gave us longer to watch the birds and squirrels feeding by the window

We visited here for the first time today and we're not disappointed. It is a hidden gem! We were lucky to get a table by the window and we're all enthralled by the birds. There was also a squirrel and some horses in the field opposite. I was delighted to see a goldcrest (I believe they're quite rare!) The food was reasonably priced and tasted wonderful. The staff couldn't do enough to help and we're really friendly. I was also impressed with the baby-changing facilities. They offer child-portions and have 2 highchairs. There is also a nice delicatessen. We will certainly return.

This was our third visit just us two this time but have taken the grandchildren before and they love being so close to the birds. Unlucky this time to get a window seat to sit very close to the window where you view all these birds and squirrels visiting the feeders put up by the owners. As not a large café it is always busy. Food and service excellent, not cheap but good homemade quality. Jolly atmosphere friendly and helpful staff. Interesting small shop attached with a lot of local produce. When we went in the summer lovely selection of herbs in pots to buy. Will be going again in the warmer weather to buy.

We arrived at lunch time ,with my son and grandson. We were very lucky to find a table next to the huge window.Where for the next hour ,my 14month old grandson ,just sat and watched the birds feeding, while we had our lunch. Now to review the cafe. From the outside it does not look ,up to much, but once inside, things change to a very nice place. The food is simple homemade cooked food.Quiches salads cakes are just a small part of the menu.Great coffee and very good service. It is a pity the eating area is not slighty larger, but then, the whole experience of dining with nature and good food would disappear.

After a day out walking in the Peak District we stopped here for a late lunch, and what a find. The staff were friendly and helpful, even though it had clearly been a long busy day. The food was very simple home cooked food with the most amazing sauces and preserves that you could wish for. If you are lucky enough to get a window seat, you can look out at the birds and squirrels feeding at the feeder (in the winter at least). The place is small so gets very busy. Also had a shop with lots of local produce - jams, honey, biscuits, chocolate, cheeses etc.

We love this cafe. Great coffee, food and service. Time your visit right to get a table by the window and you will be tempted to stay all day to watch the birds visit the feeders. Bread, salads, quiches, cakes all delicious. Definitely worth a visit (but please don't tell too many people as we like our table by the window). I noted some of the other reviews remarking on pricing - I don't think it is overpriced but you pay a little more for quality.

This is a lovely place to stop and have a meal or a snack and get lost in the wonderful world of nature. The views from the main window are stunning and the antics of the birds and squirrels most interesting and entertaining, especially for children. The food is of a high standard and the staff very friendly. My only slight gripe is the fact that everything is slightly overpriced in my opinion, so for a large family outing, it can be overly expensive.

We love this excellent place with its varied functions. Firstly, you will find some unusual herbs here in season and their plants are also good. Staff members are helpful if you're unsure of your needs. Secondly, in the Deli they always have some interesting bits and bobs for Christmas Stocking fillers from toiletries to fun chocolate treats. They sell award winning ice cream and gorgeous looking chocolates (sold individually) as well as interesting oils and vinegars. There is a selection of interesting bread flours and of cheeses and charcuterie.Thirdly, the café is excellent and although we only wanted tea, I've had lunch here before and it was very good. Freshly prepared and nicely served by the friendly and helpful staff. Just to warn you - they are now on winter hours and the café closes at 3.30 - the shop at 4.00.

I took my daughter and her boyfriend here recently because my daughter had heard about it and wanted to go, My daughter only had a cup of coffee, her boyfriend had a smoked salmon sandwich and a soft frink and I ordered a pot of tea and a slice of cake. The bill came to over £16 and I never got my tea until I finally went and asked about it and the waitress had disappeared and a man I asked had no record of my order. I got my tea in the end but was made to feel as if they were doing me a big favour in supplying it with no proof of purchase. The birds were lovely as ever and my daughter was charmed with the place. I was less so!

As you pull in to the car park there doesn't seem to be much reason to be here. But when you walk through the door it is a hidden treasure. Lovely goods displayed in the shop and even more lovely goodies in the cafe. I had sticky ginger cake which took me back to my mums. The prices are reasonable for an establishment such as this and we will return again for another pot of tea.

What a delightful place to meet up with friends for coffee or snack lunch. Excellent soups and salads, with a good selection of sandwiches and light meals, baked potatoes, cold meats and so on. Gorgeous cakes are also on offer. The woodland setting with strategically placed bird tables make this a perfect bird watching venue. Excellent value too. Will be back when visiting Derbyshire again.

Bit disappointing. Visited today with the family. It is a hidden gem of a place. But well over priced for the quality and quantity you receive. We payed on ordering only for the lady to follow us out to ask if we had payed. Think this could be an amazing place the just need to re think a few things.

The birds are lovely to look out at whilst having coffee but it's a bit cramped & tea is nearly as expensive as the coffee.

I called in here for afternoon cuppa on hot day. Had no idea it was such a unique place! The outside looked run down, but we went in to the extremely well run delicatessen shop and though to a cosy café with excellent menu, and wonderful staff, We were able to watch the birds feeding and there was constant action.

It's a bird watchers treat. Although the eating area is small it is well packed with tables. The food is well worth waiting for a table. There is such a selection of mugs on display to buy. Spend time to brouse the wide selection of deli and gift packaged goods.

Called in for a cup of tea and a bakewell slice. Tea was ok, tea bags in pots, nothing special, and the bakewell was pleasant. The little flyer we picked up on the counter while we were waiting to be served said we would be assured of a warm welcome. In fact we were ignored for about 2 minutes by all four staff. The place was full but it doesn't take a moment to say hello and let the customer know you'll be with them shortly.Three of the staff were young, the remaining one was I presume the same one referred to by a previous reviewer as she was still wearing long nails painted pillar box red. The previous reviewer was right that that's not acceptable for someone preparing food.We sat outside at some tables under a sort of permanent gazebo. Someone had abandoned a dishwasher and a set of sack trucks in the middle which was a bit odd.

Saw the herb centre when passing by so turned the car around to have a nosey inside. A fabulous deli was inside with all kinds of wonderful treats and chocolates, plus a great selection of cheeses and other goodies. Took a seat by the window to eat in the café just in front of all the bird feeders and took a lot of joy from watching and identifying the different visitors whilst waiting for bangers and mash. Great big portion of 4 sausages went down a treat. The service was excellent and the staff über friendly and efficient - a really positive vibe. Would recommend a visit!

I remember this place when it became run down as a herb centre and closed. I cannot believe how it has been transformed. It is home cooks dream and I only called in by chance to find some orange curd that I could not source in the shops I had earlier visited in Sheffield. Had I not been time-limited I could have spent a couple of hours browsing the shelves. Did have time for a quick pot of tea and I was left amazed at the wild birds feeding through the window. I could sit for hours watching them. Food looked tremendous so I will be back but I was in a rush, so will be returning very soon.

The title is our family's name for this lovely cafe which has long been a favourite. Good and plentiful food, and a lovely view of many bird feeders which attract lots of different bird species. The shop attached has some tasty treats too!

It would be easy to drive past without noticing so look out for this small herb and garden centre on the road from Hope to Hathersage . The star feature is the lovely little cafe/restaurant which overlooks the River Derwent and , just outside the panoramic window , a huge bird-feeding station so you can watch dozens of birds of several species feeding while you drink or dine . We had the cream tea : the tea is served in teapots whilst the large scones were almost too hot to touch - just the way they should be .

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!

Superb Al fresco breakfast in a lovely courtyard right in the heart of this ancient historic village. Quality of ingredients was superb, the tea was delicious and the environment was delightful. I would heartily recommend
