Riverside Fish and Chips in Derbyshire Dales

We called in for fish n chips on a busy Saturday night. We needed to wait about 5mins for the fish but that was OK. It was my first time visiting, and was lucky enough to get a table on the busy night. Food was pipping hot and was very nice. The dining space could do with a bit of tlc.

Decidedly average. Fair price though. Busy evening with firework display, service prompt. Fish mediocre. There are other chippies.

Fish & chips was absolutely spot on! Customer service from the blonde lady was absolutely disgusting. F this and F that. Talking about her kids being taken by social services. Her mouth was appalling and made the whole atmosphere uncomfortable. Think the boss here needs to reshuffle his staff. I’m sure she’s a lovely person deep down but couldn’t care less about customers being present. I won’t be back based on her customer service skills

Service with a smile, absolutely not. My husband and I were greeted by the most pissed off woman we've ever had the misfortune to meet.

We visited for fish & chips during the school holidays after a tip to Gullivers Kingdom. Nothing wrong with the food & it was a nice evening so we sat outside. However the lady serving behind the counter (long dark hair) definitely does not enjoy her job! She was miserable, impatient & verging on rude. It wasn't busy, there was nobody else waiting to be served so she wasn't in a hurry or anything but she definitely put us off going back. Next time we'll try elsewhere.

We opted to sit inside for our fish and chips but the place definitely needs refurbishing. I opted for the haddock and chips which was okay but my husband and sister asked for cod which was freshly fried and far superior to my meal.

Not wanting a full meal, we asked if it would be OK to share a portion of Fish'n'Chips, we were assured that it would be fine by the ladies serving behind the counter, so we ordered our Fish'n'Chips, which were cooked fresh and enjoyed them at one of their inside tables. Good value for money and the Fish was lovely as were the chips, we would have no hesitation recommending this eatery.

Rude staff. Was rude because i asked for a coke after my order. Then slammed it on the counter 👍 some staff were polite but not that person, just learn to smile

Lovely location on the river in the centre of town. Nice outside terrace if the weather allows. Small pay n display car park nearby. Cool ice cream shop next door. Haddock chips n mushy peas Can't beat it

Picked this chipshop at random after arriving for a day trip and what a choice .. Great value and great staff who we're also very helpful, plenty of room to sit inside as well , will definitely re visit 😀

My partner and I and my two little grandsons went for lunch there today, weds 15th Feb, and we had the most delicious lunch! The haddock was the best I've ever tasted and everyone else enjoyed their fish fingers, battered sausage and chips! The manager and staff were really friendly and looked after us really well too so next time we visit Matlock we'll definitely be going to Riverside Fish & Chips again!

Walking along the front at Matlock Bath, going past fish and chip shops, smelling the food - but can't partake because my lovely wife can't eat gluten. She has a serious reaction to gluten, think Violet Beauregard. So as a loyal husband I've skipped fish and chip shops for a LONG time. Walking past the Riverside Fish Bar my wife notices a sign on the door that says "Fresh GF fish and chips served daily" - our curiosity piqued we went in. They totally get it! Separate fryer and prep for GF foods. So my wife and I had fish and chips for the first time in years. It was really good too. The batter was the right thickness, not greasy. The chips were really hot and just right. The service was very friendly and considerate. All the food and drinks came in recyclable or compostable containers. Fish and chips, heaven!

We were at first disappointed because in January most of the famous amount of Fish and Chip shops are closed. Not this one and it does the best fish and chips that are gluten free I have ever tasted. Everything is so fresh and crisp! Now, the other great thing are the staff. Andreas, Rachel and Chris were just the loveliest people. Friendly, professional and interested about their customers who came in. We both had the fish and chips with mushy peas and they were divine. So a recommendation to go 10/10 and a big thank you to you all at The Riverside.

There are a plethora of fish and chip shops in Matlock Bath, and Riverside Fish Bar is a perfectly reasonable choice amongst them. It is the only one of them on the opposite side to all the other amenities Matlock Bath has to offer, and that means it is the only one that offers outside seating that isn't literally on the main road side. It also means it is the only one that means you can eat your food on the banks of the Derwent, which is a very pleasant thing to do in the summer. Not quite so much in January... The food on offer here is perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with it, other than their idea of a 'large bag of chips' is actually a medium sized tray of chips. No matter though - the chips are decent and the cheeseburgers are surprisingly nice. Well worth a try. This is one of those places that charges 25p for sauces (at times of writing) because they sell them in those irritating plastic pots that are never quite big enough whilst also managing to be hopeless for the environment. They really maximise seating in here, so it can get quite tight when it is busy, however, like I say, there is outdoor seating, so there should always be somewhere to sit. Not a bad place at all. Worth visiting for sure.

Read all the reviews in Google.. u will see how bad. food poisoning worms in fish rude staff dirty toilets dirty hands touching food no lock on toilets under cooked food.. every thing u don't want in a resturant! my daughter qnd her boyfriend had parasites in her fish .... both bits of fish ! worms so big to. Refund given only for 2 x fish cos I'm guessing they expected them to eat the chips next to the worms Also next day felt unwell environmental health Derbyshire dales called. and said this is a quality fish issue... And I showed them all the reviews... case opened and on going..... I say no more because I hope they get closed down !!!

Nice chips and the boys loved the free sweets. However, could not rate higher as the owner came outside to where we were eating our chips to smoke. Really?! I don’t have an issue with the smoking, but not near customers, with young children and whilst eating. Poor form.

The food is lovely , they did a gluten free option which is very good and tasty and good value for money :)

Chips hot, battered sausage cold, virtually no batter, congealed beans, it was a case of one slice of beans or two. Not worth the cost

Perfect mini fish chips and mushy peas for £6 each. No waiting everything ready as soon as ordering despite this everything was hot. Sat on the benches between the takeaway and ice cream shop next door once we worked out how to get to them (you have to go round the back of the takeaway no access from the street)

Stopped by for a bit of lunch with family. It was a tasty meal and the curry sauce was nice, just felt the batter was a little greasy for my liking but the family enjoyed it. Good location too

My wife and I regularly eat fish and chips on our weekend trips around the country. This weekend we dropped in to the Riverside at Matlock Bath and really glad we did. Beautiful fresh haddock, perfectly cooked with lovely tasty batter, all served by a pleasant friendly staff and washed down with a nice cup of tea. Recommend wholeheartedly.

So many places for chippy tea but this is the only one with a view by the river. Superb fish and chips. Loved it! Fast and efficient, good food and cheesy chips options

Stopped here for some dinner after a family day trip to Gulliver's Kingdom. Matlock Bath is full of chippys and to be honest, we only stopped at this one because it was the closest when we decided to have something to eat before getting the train back home. The food was reasonably priced and offered the usual you'd expect from a chippy. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating (outdoor seating offering a rather scenic view over the river) and the place was very clean. We enjoyed our food. It wasn't anything spectacular (but I suppose everyone has their favourite local chippy that no other ever compares to) but it was enjoyable, tasted fresh and arrived to our table hot, the portions were also a decent size. We spent around £30 to feed and water two adults and two children and we were all full by the time we'd finished so decent value. If I were to visit Matlock Bath again I'd probably try one of the other various chippys to compare but I'd have no qualms with coming here again.

Went here as we had seen it was highly rated in the area. The food was well priced, but quite greasy. One of the staff made snidey comments about us littering napkins despite the fact it was the wind that had blown them from another table where people had finished eating.

We are both coeliac and haven't had fish and chips for 10+ years. So as we walked though Matlock Bath we were both despairing at the prospect of either an ice cream, or yet another baked potato or packet of crisps as our supper (often the only GF food on offer) I Then suddenly I noticed I sign saying GF Fish & Chips. I peeked in the window and saw an immaculately clean fish bar and asked the server if they were really able to do GF for us and he assured me that they could but it would be a 10 minute wait. No problem ... we sat overlooking the river and thoroughly enjoyed our meal (we had one portion between the two of us as it was so big). The fish was very fresh and the batter deliciously crispy. If you like fish and chips then it won’t get much better than this- all freshly cooked and served with a smile even when very busy and in good weather there is loads of seating next to the river.

Fantastic place for fish & chips. Been a few times, and again, my last visit was very good. Food great, staff even better. Recommended.

So my young friend has memories of visiting this place as a child and believes it is the best. It certainly is the cheapest and the portions are just right for a normal adult with a normal appetite. Coming from London where the price is double I was very happy with what I got and thought the fish was just grand. However I did not do any comparison with the pleathora of other fish shops in the street.

Excellent Fish and Chips, promptly served, polite staff and good value for money. Also caters for gluten free with gluten free fish and chips available.

The staff make the visit as relaxed as possible, the food was good and the choice was a good range. Only down side was paying for red sauce

An entirely acceptable chippy that has the advantage of having seating by the river should you want a view. Chips were alright, fish was a bit meh, and some jalapeno bites were quite good. Prices seem comparable to everywhere else in the village.

Went to the fish and chips shop yesterday I never got my change back from them they tried denying it saying there till was down ( that says guilty to me ) I knew they was lying because they found it funny on the phone...

Had chips £2 each portion if you put the portions together it would have been small lots of people complaining round avoid this chip shop go to one of the others

We can't fault the service we received - we called in advance just to check they could cater for gluten free and they confirmed they had a separate fryer. Food all freshly prepared for us to ensure no cross-contamination, staff were polite and friendly, food...

Lazy people leave skin on fish, chips so greasy all stick together in one gooey blob, waiting time very short to be served. Had no cod so had to buy hadock.

Didn’t get as far as actually eating here. While in the queue to order I repeatedly watched the lady serving push a long strand of hair from her face - it reached around her face and was constantly falling into her face near her mouth....

Called in here as looked a lot of room, the best fish and chips I have had for a long time, if you can take own cutlery as plastic knife and fork not brilliant eating in, served in cartons. Pies were also tasty.

We were doing section 5 of the Derwent Valley Way from Matlock to Whatstandwell. We'd gone over Pic Torr and High Torr so it had taken us longer than usual to get to Matlock Bath.We'd brought sandwiches but we thought a coffee would be better than our cold squash. The latte turned out to be good.

Food was fresh and lovely and reasonable value for money , however the staff literally threw the food on the tray charged £0.25 for a sachet of Ketchup having spent £17 and could not have been more miserable if they tried

Very welcoming and open. Upon walking into the shop, my 3 year old decided to be very ill at the table (only been in the store 2 minutes) the staff were extremely helpful, offering to help us clean up the mess and even rushed out to get us a new pack of Baby Wipes. Customer service was outstanding at all opportunities. Mini fish was well priced and well sized.Kids meals were filling and well priced also. I would recommend. An all round great food experience for all 7 of our party... despite the ill child

I walked into the chippy with high hopes after looking at the professional exterior and the high prices I was expecting one of (if not the BEST) chip shop experiences of my life.

Ordered large meals and basically got kids version of 3 adult meals. Looking around at other meals the sizes differ

It was our last evening and it was absolutely pouring with rain but we wanted fish and chips and as Matlock Bath is described as the seaside town of the dales it had to be done. However we had a dog so we decided in the Riverside as it had a canopy which we snuggled underneath. Two lots of sausage and chips a mini fish and chips and a normal fish and chips they were all freshly cooked and delicious. Good way to end a great holiday

Visited here yesterday when In Matlock for illuminations - staff were friendly, place was clean but food wasn’t hot, more lukewarm and went cold really quickly. Was ok for the price but probs won’t visit again

So yummy we went twice! We visited Matlock Bath for the Illuminations and just wanted something quick to eat- the mini portions were enough for us & so tasty we went back the next night. Sat inside, the tables were clean and the staff efficient- would go ba k.

I didn’t think the portion size was great for what I had which was large sausage and chips . The small seating area was rather cold as the door was open for people eating outside to be served . All in all food was nice and can not fault it other than chips size that I got

We went here to just get something to eat i.e. not a romantic dinner, etc. It was fine. Well cooked food and somewhere to eat it. The later being clean but basic.

Cooked to perfection cheap and the staff were great, the purpled haired manager who served me was absolutely top notch and friendly. When on a day out make sure you visit here....

We choose this one over the others as it's got good seating and it's usually not too busy, it's always nice food. However more options could be given for meal deals and the children's meal deals are just a tad slightly over priced but given its enjoyable we will and have returned again.

As the title states we regularly visit this fish and chips shop.

Always go here when visiting Matlock and no where else as the fish is always tasty.nothing worse than a bad battered fish with no taste.good kids meals with drink.even better they let you take it across road to the pub or brink you drink over from there so you can enjoy a pint with your fish and chips.bliss

Requested lightly battered fish but our request was completely ignored. The fish did not look particularly fresh as they appeared slightly grey in appearance. The service was very poor and so was the value for money aspect. The premises appeared attractive from the outside but it was a different view on the inside. Some of the staff gave the appearance that this was their first evening working at this establishment.

The food was of fine quality for a chippie, but the service was laughable. Firstly, we were brought the wrong order and when we informed the young lad serving us he told us in the most disinterested tone, 'I just do what I'm told' and headed back inside. My friend had to carry the second table's order over to them that was wrongly placed with us and tried to rectify the situation. The other table were clearly unhappy with the terrible service they had received as we heard them loudly complain to the same member of staff who was ridiculously apathetic. Our order was still wrong with one person receiving the wrong type of pie (they ate it anyway as there was already so much going wrong) and my friend not receiving one of his sides. When we told a different member of staff we were missing part of our order they said they would bring it out. Twenty minutes later and we had finished our food and the missing item was nowhere to be seen. We just left because it was only 90p and we had already endured enough of a farce.

Excellent Fish and Chip Restaurant, with a great view the river Derwent . The Fish and Chips are to die for well worth visiting . We had Haddock Chips and Mushy Peas

Visited today , 2 lg fish and chips with sides and a mini and 3 drinks approx £24 . We thought it was really good value and the fish was absolutely beautiful. Clean premises

These have to be the best fish and chips in Bakewell, always freshly cooked, great fish and lovely chips, hot and great value for money all served with a smile.

Came a run out on the bike with the sun being out. Tried most restaurants apart from this one until now. Was absolutely delicious. Pies are exceptional and the chips just perfect. Excellent views / scenery etc.

Didn’t enjoy this experience. The place didn’t seem clean and there was hair found in two of our meals!

Decided to eat here as we had read good reviews. However on this occasion we could have been fooled into thinking the reviewer's were describing a different place altogether! My fish, although freshly cooked to order, was opaque and undercooked and the mushy peas were luke warm. I can appreciate it was nearing their closing time but I still expected better and as the restaurant still had lots of diners ordering I began to expect that this is as good as it gets. Astonishingly, while everyone was eating a member of staff started mopping the restaurant floor and the overwhelming smell of very strong disinfectant put me off altogether. I left without finishing my meal and will not be returning.

Great chippy. We come here every time we visit Matlock Bath. Portions are a great size and the food is always tasty. Do begrudge paying 10p for a small sachet of sauce though! Apart from that we love it here.

Visited matlock on 5th of Nov and it was quite a lovely UK country side with breath taking sceneries and tourist attractions.

Went here on a busy Saturday prior the illumination and boats. Coped very well with numerous customers and the food was good quality. Helpful staff

As a family of 5 we went to the riverside before watching illuminations all having mini fish not one of us enjoyed it or ate it all, mine was watery & slimey like it wasn't cooked had no taste they must use the cheapest fish going we had to ask for plates as it came on poly trays if i had wanted that i could have ate them in the street not in the restaurant i spent £25 felt totally ripped off & the toilets were filthy.

Doesn't deserve a 5 Hygiene award! After ordering and paying saw an employee using a dirty looking dry cloth and just swept any leftover food onto the floor! No sign of hygiene spray to wipe the table. The fish fryer went from the frying to take orders, handled the money, and then went back to picking up fish with his fingers to put them in the fryer without washing his hands! He also took food outside, held the door handle when he came in and then went straight back to picking up fish. No hand washing! A pity because the food was lovely! You might think I am being picky but my husband who was with me has Leukaemia and a low immune system and can easily catch diseases from lack of hygiene. I haven't told him!!!

We went and had fish & chips which we thoroughly enjoyed and were amazed how busy all the fish & chips were they were nice and hot and warmed you before going out to watch the boats and fireworks

Shocking service. Ordered a haddock and chips. Was presented with a piece of fish that was cremated as cooked twice to reheat it. Couldn't eat it as it was like trying to eat a piece of leather!

Matlock Bath in Derbyshire has one fish and chip shop every 20 yards. However, on a trawl of chip shops, at lunch time, to find just one that might serve a gluten free night, day or even regularly, I was despaired to get negative answers, until one shop suggested the Riverside Fish and Chip shop, close to the Tourist Information Office in Matlock Bath.

Food was okay, overpriced compared to others in the area. Very rude staff - walked up to the counter to order and was greeted with a “what?” One girl was on her phone visibly not doing anything with two or three people waiting to order, which is a bit rude. The real shock is a boy working behind the counter being handed two pints by his mate and handing over cash for them, then drinking them in full view of customers whilst wrapping up chips! Will definitely not be going here again.
